I always found those silent beams kinda eerie, like the silent sentinel on guards.

Fresnel lens could always be converted to work as a pyrheliophor lens and project concentrated sunlight as a heat ray to burn ships or even sailors skin. Maybe this was the function of ancient lighthouses such as the one at Alexandria or the Colossus?
