As another convert (Mexican background), it is refreshing to see people from some different backgrounds discuss Islam. It is also very true, a lot of people don't have a specific reason or dramatic story for becoming Muslim. This isn't surprising as this is the religion of human nature دين الفطرة Also I used to live in China. The Muslims there are very nice and the culture is very interesting. They have halal restaurants everywhere that serve Lanzhou cuisine (Hui Chinese food)
Indeed our sisters and brothers in China are giving a good picture of Islam to the people who come in contact with them. I lived in Japan some 20 years ago and I remember very vividly meeting a young Japanese man in the city of Sendai. He came to the city's small prayer hall because there was no mosque in the city of Fokushima in the neighbouring prefecture. He was so happy to show the certificate of conversion from the islamic centre in Tokyo. That young man was fascinated by chinese muslims when he visited the country and ended up becoming Muslim..MashAllah.

I am a born Muslim from a majority Muslim country living in a Dutch city with a LARGE Islamic presence. I am having lunch in a Turkish restaurant while listening to this. And I can relate because the reason I am listening to this while eating is because I am sitting at a table for one. So don't be sad if you're the only Muslim in your community. Born Muslim or living in a Muslim community doesn't automatically translate into a Muslim family. welcome brother, Canton was one of the first region in China that has a huge Muslim community since 1000 years ago and if i'm not mistaken one of the oldest mosque in China was in Canton. SO cantonese Muslim is our earliest brothers! But during the Song dynasty there was a conflict with the emperor and the Muslim community there because the chinese nobles are jealous of the prosperity of the Muslim merchants over there so 800 000 Muslim were killed and a lot of them fled to South East Asia and married locals here. Im not sure the Mosque is still there or not. But Arabs used to call Canton as Zaitun.

As a Chinese Muslim, it's good to see a Japanese Muslim mentioned our shared history bounds from a Islamic perspective, which I currently am incapable to share out of many reasons, and what always wonders me is that why Chinese Islam didn't reach to Korea and Japan like Chinese Buddhism did during Tang dynasty and later. And why Korea and Japan didn't really have that much Islamic history like China have.
Maybe because of politics....from my understanding Chinese Muslims never become a part of ruling division...Every ruler in Chinese dynasties is non muslim (please correct me if im wrong)
@@ezzwizz5219 Chinese rulers are not so interested in religions, though some of them are Buddhists or Taoists, they are unlikely to send a group of Buddhist missionaries to Japan and Korea to preach. And even if we Chinese Muslims were never really the ruling classes of the whole nation, we did helped preaching Islam to Malaysia and Indonesia during 14---15 century, I just don't know why it didn't take place in Korea and Japan

I have many Chinese friends in Australia and lived with them for a couple of years. I completely agree with Dr. Naoki that somehow any non-East Asian way of dawah and articulation of Islam somehow doesn't penetrate. Most of them agree logically with everything Islam offers. However, there is still an invisible barrier, which as a non-Chinese, I don't think I'll ever be able to overcome. We need to sow the seed to cultivate indigenous East Asian scholars speaking to their community in their own language within their context. May Allah reward you brother Paul for bringing such intriguing guests. I love your work and the way you conduct these sessions.
I believe the name of the Professor that he contacted was Prof Hasan Ko Nakata. I met him and became his interpreter when he gave a lecture in our university.

I’ve always had a deep seated belief that the importance of honor, cleanliness, and excellence would make the Japanese naturally attracted to Islam if it was presented appropriately. Islam is indeed the quality control that removes what is harmful and promotes what is good in every culture, while allowing the uniqueness and beauty to thrive. When I read the Tao Te Ching, I see Islam in almost every line.

What a wonderful guess. He so unique in his perscpective. His point about Nationalism dividing the Ummah is valid and it is also true that there is a problem in communication with those out side a certain fath tradition and how the local language and culture can misinterpret words and rituals causing push back undeccessarily. There are great japanese scholars on Islam and myself enjoyed islamic books written by japanese scholars, unlike those written by orientalists. I pray that Allah swt give hidayah of Islam to the Japanese, koreans, taiwanese, latin Americans and Europe.

Just coming across this video and very happy i did. This speaks to my experience of my journey to Islam. Dr. Yamaoto's commentary is very important for Muslims from other geographic locations to understand that Islam melds into the people/culture it joins, not that an "Arabized" culture should represent Islam as a faith or culture alone. I became Muslim in China through Hui Muslims, his family had been Muslim for more than 1350 years, while a language student at Beijing University over 40 years ago. When I spent time as a language student and expat in the Middle East a decade later, I am so glad I was introduced to Islam outside of the Middle East...an understanding of Islam that was more kind, inclusive, and inculcating a softness toward others from Far Eastern philosophies--and not flagellation from an "Islam is superior-ity" complex that is not obvious to many Muslims bound to traditional thinking. Just take a look at the knee-jerk reactions of most Muslims in traditional Muslim states...form over substance.

One of the most thought provoking conversations surrounding the topic. The dialouge really highlights the fact that in some way, every single pre-islamic human civilisation had divine elements found in its roots. Evidently, it's understood that there has been hundreds of thousands of prophets before nabi Muhammed (pbuh) sent to these different cultures. Theories around Plato and other prominent historical figures that played a role in formulating a societal practice potentialy are interesting examples of this. Islam's arrival truly revolved around brining all of these accumulated diviations of faith back to its initial core beliefs. Really something grand and amazing to think about.
I am from padang, Indonesia, at the 80s when I was at elementary school, we studied read quran at surau (madrasah), we wear peci (malay traditional hat) and baju koko or baju gunting cina (Chinese cut clothes). That how Chinese culture influence and mix with our malay (minangkabau) tradition.
I don't know if Br. Paul did this on purpose, but having the guy tell his story first makes it a lot better than start with the history of Islam in China. If it was done on purpose, kudos Paul.

59:55 the Professor stated it very well that Islam was able to accommodate both Hellenistic and Confucius philosophies and it did so without there being any theological fractures within the Islamic civilization. This truly shows Islam’s universality.

Zheng He is a Persian muslim. As we known he was taken as slave during Ming Dynasty era.
Malaysian here. My great grandmother from maternal side was a Chinese convert to Islam. Long story short a lot of my rakyat(people) and friends thought i was a chinese even today. Little did they know i'm actually a Malay-Chinese Muslim and i can't even speak chinese lol
Both gentlemen reverted few years back. I am born muslim in a generations back Muslims family and I am here to learn about Islam and I actually learnt .

Dr. Naoki Yamamoto does a good job of pointing out how much our identities are embedded in ethno-centrism and nationalities. He thinks ahead in the future when there would be a thriving Muslim community in Japan too. May God help him in his endeavors.
I am a born Muslim from a majority Muslim country living in a Dutch city with a LARGE Islamic presence. I am having lunch in a Turkish restaurant while listening to this.
And I can relate because the reason I am listening to this while eating is because I am sitting at a table for one.
So don't be sad if you're the only Muslim in your community.
Born Muslim or living in a Muslim community doesn't automatically translate into a Muslim family.
So just be proud and grateful that Allah choose you and your religion isn't just your culture

welcome brother, Canton was one of the first region in China that has a huge Muslim community since 1000 years ago and if i'm not mistaken one of the oldest mosque in China was in Canton. SO cantonese Muslim is our earliest brothers! But during the Song dynasty there was a conflict with the emperor and the Muslim community there because the chinese nobles are jealous of the prosperity of the Muslim merchants over there so 800 000 Muslim were killed and a lot of them fled to South East Asia and married locals here. Im not sure the Mosque is still there or not. But Arabs used to call Canton as Zaitun.

As a Chinese Muslim, it's good to see a Japanese Muslim mentioned our shared history bounds from a Islamic perspective, which I currently am incapable to share out of many reasons, and what always wonders me is that why Chinese Islam didn't reach to Korea and Japan like Chinese Buddhism did during Tang dynasty and later. And why Korea and Japan didn't really have that much Islamic history like China have.
Maybe because of politics....from my understanding Chinese Muslims never become a part of ruling division...Every ruler in Chinese dynasties is non muslim (please correct me if im wrong)
@@ezzwizz5219 Chinese rulers are not so interested in religions, though some of them are Buddhists or Taoists, they are unlikely to send a group of Buddhist missionaries to Japan and Korea to preach. And even if we Chinese Muslims were never really the ruling classes of the whole nation, we did helped preaching Islam to Malaysia and Indonesia during 14---15 century, I just don't know why it didn't take place in Korea and Japan

@@ezzwizz5219 I don't quite familiar with early history of Islam in Malaysia but I do know that trades is the key element, and Muslim citizens in Hokkien province of China helped spreading Islam in Malaysia and Indonesia with other Muslims, I was surprised when I first knowing it.

I have many Chinese friends in Australia and lived with them for a couple of years. I completely agree with Dr. Naoki that somehow any non-East Asian way of dawah and articulation of Islam somehow doesn't penetrate. Most of them agree logically with everything Islam offers. However, there is still an invisible barrier, which as a non-Chinese, I don't think I'll ever be able to overcome. We need to sow the seed to cultivate indigenous East Asian scholars speaking to their community in their own language within their context.
May Allah reward you brother Paul for bringing such intriguing guests. I love your work and the way you conduct these sessions.

I’ve always had a deep seated belief that the importance of honor, cleanliness, and excellence would make the Japanese naturally attracted to Islam if it was presented appropriately. Islam is indeed the quality control that removes what is harmful and promotes what is good in every culture, while allowing the uniqueness and beauty to thrive. When I read the Tao Te Ching, I see Islam in almost every line.

It was quite an interesting lecture. If I were to summarize it I'd say islam surpass the boundaries of national identities since every muslim is a part of this united ummah.

What a wonderful guess. He so unique in his perscpective. His point about Nationalism dividing the Ummah is valid and it is also true that there is a problem in communication with those out side a certain fath tradition and how the local language and culture can misinterpret words and rituals causing push back undeccessarily. There are great japanese scholars on Islam and myself enjoyed islamic books written by japanese scholars, unlike those written by orientalists. I pray that Allah swt give hidayah of Islam to the Japanese, koreans, taiwanese, latin Americans and Europe.

Just coming across this video and very happy i did. This speaks to my experience of my journey to Islam. Dr. Yamaoto's commentary is very important for Muslims from other geographic locations to understand that Islam melds into the people/culture it joins, not that an "Arabized" culture should represent Islam as a faith or culture alone. I became Muslim in China through Hui Muslims, his family had been Muslim for more than 1350 years, while a language student at Beijing University over 40 years ago. When I spent time as a language student and expat in the Middle East a decade later, I am so glad I was introduced to Islam outside of the Middle East...an understanding of Islam that was more kind, inclusive, and inculcating a softness toward others from Far Eastern philosophies--and not flagellation from an "Islam is superior-ity" complex that is not obvious to many Muslims bound to traditional thinking. Just take a look at the knee-jerk reactions of most Muslims in traditional Muslim states...form over substance.
Japanese from Turkey 🇹🇷 speaks English talks about Chinese 🇨🇳 along with British in American platform, respect from San Francisco ❤ alhamdulila Islam is the only solution for all the problems in the world 🌎

One of the most thought provoking conversations surrounding the topic.
The dialouge really highlights the fact that in some way, every single pre-islamic human civilisation had divine elements found in its roots.
Evidently, it's understood that there has been hundreds of thousands of prophets before nabi Muhammed (pbuh) sent to these different cultures.
Theories around Plato and other prominent historical figures that played a role in formulating a societal practice potentialy are interesting examples of this.
Islam's arrival truly revolved around brining all of these accumulated diviations of faith back to its initial core beliefs.
Really something grand and amazing to think about.
I am from padang, Indonesia, at the 80s when I was at elementary school, we studied read quran at surau (madrasah), we wear peci (malay traditional hat) and baju koko or baju gunting cina (Chinese cut clothes). That how Chinese culture influence and mix with our malay (minangkabau) tradition.

59:55 the Professor stated it very well that Islam was able to accommodate both Hellenistic and Confucius philosophies and it did so without there being any theological fractures within the Islamic civilization. This truly shows Islam’s universality.
