- Franco Bonisolli (May 25, 1938 -- October 30, 2003) was an Italian operatic tenor, particularly associated with the Italian repertory, notably as Manrico and Calaf.
Bonisolli was born in Rovereto, Italy. He studied with Alfredo Lattaro, and, after winning an international voice contest, he made his debut in Spoleto, as Ruggero, in 1962. He quickly established himself throughout Italy, appearing first in lyric roles such as, Nemorino, Duca di Mantua, Alfredo, Rodolfo, des Grieux, Hoffmann, etc.
He took part in revivals of neglected opera such as La donna del lago, opposite Montserrat Caballé, and Le siège de Corinthe, opposite Beverly Sills, and took part in the creation of new works, such as La lampada di Alidino by Rota, and Luisilla by Mannino.
He began an international career in the early 1970s, with debut at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Paris Opéra, the Metropolitan Opera, etc., and began expanding his repertory to include more dramatic roles, notably Arnold, Don Jose, Manrico, Radames, Otello, Cavaradossi, Calaf, etc.
Bonisolli was a highly gifted and exciting[neutrality is disputed]singer with a ringing upper register, but as the years went by his singing became increasingly undisciplined. His eccentric behaviour and his onstage antics earned him the nickname "Il Pazzo" (The Madman), and made him a difficult colleague to work with.[citation needed]
He can be heard on several recordings, notably Rigoletto, Il trovatore, La traviata, which were all soundtrack of German TV productions. He also appeared in 1968, in a film version of La traviata, opposite Anna Moffo and Gino Bechi. In 1976, he recorded Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, opposite Galina Vishnevskaya.
He died suddenly, in Vienna, at the age of 65.
Franco Bonisolli died one day after Franco Corelli died.
In just 2 days the opera world lost 2 of the greatest.
This guy is MARVELOUS!!!
You get the 3 tenors together and you ll see who is the winer.
To play and joke the way he did with such a difficult aria is not for everyone.
Truly one of a kind.
This was the San Francisco Opera "Fol de Rol" benefit. I believe it was 1983. I was performing with the SFO from 1982 through 1985. I attended this performance and remember how Bonisolli was an animal when it came to this aria. Terry McEwen was right, he could arise from sleeping and sing Di Quella Pira at his breakfast. There are more stories about his Aida with Leontyne Price but I will save that for another day. Suffice it to say that Bonisolli was "pazzo" and a wonderful talent.
A combination of a great singer and an artist.
This guy deserved all the enjoyment he seems to have derived from his "work". I wish all opera singers had as much fun as he seems to have had!
Jonas Kaufmann should see this video to know how great tenor can sing, this is a real dramatic spinto tenor.
I am sure he did and requested to erase Bonisolli's videos from the channel thereafter.....
Kaufman nervously smokes in the corner...😂
Kaufmann (the German woodcutter) should pay us each time his team post anything on Yt!
I'm so glad that this was posted.
I'm surprised he is not more well known x
Not just how to sing, but how to jump! 😂
@adrianogentili100 ::
This video does not show Bonisolli as a great artist. It is an ego trip ! It is an example of a tenor who sacrificed his beautiful voice of the Duke to sing his voice into the ground of Di quella pira.
Amazing performance XXX
An entertainer as well as a great tenor.
Viva Bonisolli
He is enjoying himself! I wouldn’t call him subtle but what high notes!!!!
Well done! Refreshing to see a tenor going all out and easing up the stiffness predominant in classical music performances.
Bravo Franco. Riposa in pace il suo bel cuore.
He is amazing
Fantastic, crazy, unbelievable, what a tenor, RIP!
Franco approached his craft like an olympic athlete. As a young tenor (21), I had the joy of listening to him at close quarters, backstage in 8 performances of this role, and I was just in awe as he sang the offstage cabaletta to harp accompaniment. To this day, he is one of my greatest inspirations, but I would never attempt to imitate him.
Outstanding tenor
He certainly has more voice and personality than any of the three tenors-you know the ones I mean.
sven sundquist !Totally agree!
hahahahahahaah, that's true
YES!
Bonisolli himself in one interview, talks about the three tenors and says he's way much better than them and starts joking about.
Il pazzo è il migliore!
@@MaxPower-cp5qi Corelli was the opposite of this man. This man has no nerves. Corelli was a bundle of them lmao
other singers are light years away this is the finest recording I have heard or ever likely to
A vocal God!!!!!
Un fiume in piena, devastante.
Thank you for posting 😊 Maestro Bonisolli is in great form here .

Best comment ever 😂
Bravissimo this is a Greater tenor
Grande Bonisolli
absoluement incroyable! danke sehr
This guy was crazy !!! But he sang so well !!! Bravoooooo !
He was just free in expression and joy, what many of us don't allow ourselves to be.
Totally undisciplined musician (and I guess a bit crazy as well), but his top notes are unrivalled in freedom, ease and beauty!
André Cardinaux verissimo....voce inarrivabile...l'eccezionale
Corelli was better
@@toivonencresto why is it necessary to say who was better? Both of them were different and their singing was great
Franco Corelli's Di quella pira is on a higher level, more of an art, Bonisolli's is strong but not refined.
@@ioancoca6712 agree, that's not correct. Agree with you!
Unbeatable❤😂
Prachtig!!!!!
Impressionante
Respect!
Ineguagliabile ..sopra pavarotti
Alfieromandosi.
To sing the last aria from Il Trivatore is not an easy thing to do. However, more difficult than that would be to sing the entire opera & at the very end finish it with Di quella pira without any cracks and with the high C at the very end. Would have liked to have seen that very much! But, overall a very good dramatic voice. With that voice, Franco Bonisolli might have been able to sing Othello unquestionably !!!
He is a Big Lyric tenor with a dark voice ...NOT DRAMATIC....
He did sing Otello and very successfully. Listen to his Dio mi potevi in his concert in Japan. He is lyrico-spinto who was suited very well to sing dramatic roles.
Nobody else could do that!! Not Del Monaco, not Corelli, not Tucker
Agreed ! and Franco would have buried The Three Tenors..Dom,Pav and Car. If Franco had sung with them i doubt we would have heard them . Bonisolli was the most under-rated Tenor of all time and that was just wrong, The other Franco got all the accolades but Bonisolli would have out sung Corelli anytime. It's oddly strange that both Tenors Bonisolli and Corelli died the same year, same month and same day.
Please... Corelli and Del Monaco are a class on their own.
Well Bonisolli was very underated but he is without doubt one of the best tenors ever, along with Corelli and Del Monaco
@@toivonencresto They are both superior to Bonisolli. The two are true artists and Bonisolli, yes he had an enormous voice, is more like a pop-artist. No comparison with Franco Corelli and his "di quella pira" , Corelli's is high art.
@@judithbereczky4114 My vocal teacher in the mid 80's was a bel canto tenor of the 50's who possessed an easily produced high F above high C. He was extremely insistent upon my learning the bel canto technique, rather than the modern version. His personal favourite of that 80's era was Bonisolli. Not Pavarotti, Corelli, Domingo etc. When I asked him why, since Bonisolli diverged so much from the bel canto technique, he replied that though he was technically flawed, he was so much more exciting than anyone else of the time. His voice was bigger than Corelli's, & vastly more secure at the top than Del Monaco. This is self evident, not opinion. Bonisolli's primary flaw was that he was an eccentric extrovert showman, who was a spendthrift of voice, & often sang beyond his resources. This isn't good for vocal consistency & reliability, but when in voice, for an audience is tremendously exciting.
Simply great and not apreciated enough! Tenors should be crazy to afford their roles. If they sing at their limit this is thrillig and some error has to be forgotten. Singers who sing in "safe mode" are just annoying!
Absolutely
Yes.
Mein gutes leute oder Freund, yes, Mario del Monaco undoubtedly had a magnificent voice. However, do not believe he was a golden tenor or sang German opera. Only in recent memory did Placido Domingo sing Wagnerian opera. But, I believe is not best at that genre!
Who can sing like that these days? Wonderful Franco, thank you.
Also in that times, there was few tenors of this volume.
How old is he there?
may be a victim of his own success his voice and technique we're so good that he met every challenge easily perhaps he got rather bored
what is the reason to assume he was bored?
TheTuber357 - yes, Pertile had one hell of a voice. However, Del Monaco & perhaps Corelli also had voices that would rival anyone and would sing the whole opera from start to finish & not just the last aria like Di quella pira as seen here with Bonisolli, though he too had a great voice as displayed. One other mention, Placido Domingo sang Othello but must recall he started as a baritone originally. I do not believe Domingo’s voice had the brilliance of these others mentioned. However, Domingo is certainly the most complete musician - singer ever in the history of classical music !!! And finally, I have heard Jose Carreras sing before he succumbed to leukemia and that voice would have rivaled any including Pertile & so forth. But, unfortunately, he was never to have the same brilliant voice after receiving treatment with chemo drugs; I believe the chemo treatments permanently damaged his “Golden” voice. Don’t believe me, listen to it for yourselves please. He was really that good !!! Would have been the all times great, no doubt !!!!!!!
Mario Lanza or Antonio Cocozza (real name) was never that great. However, did starred in “The Great Caruso” & many other Hollywood films in the 1950’s & 60’s & had his own television show as well. But, he never sang opera just arias & American Classical Music from Brodsky & Cahn and many other great American composers such as Cole Porter. Lanza really did a big favor in showcasing American Classical music, like none other. God rest his soul. His stage name was derived or borrowed from his mother whose maiden name was Maria Lanza, the masculinization of her name.
@@osmarmayoral3996 the real name is "Alfred Arnold Cocozza".....
antes de Todos!
Salvatore Fisichella cantou melhor haha
This is not a particularly good performance.
Yep. This is great!!!
