I really wish this video could have some sort of impact to teachers and school staff members too...

In italy it's exactly the same. My (equivalent to) 10th grade english teacher even yelled at me really angry when I asked if she could speak some english while she explained things.
I wholeheartedly intend to stay in school, but Mr. Brown is right on a multitude of levels. I should not have panic attacks every time I think about how close I am to entering the real world and remembering that I don't know shit about it.

It is so sad that this is so true. They never see how much pain we are going through on the inside. One of my best friends has to live up to the expectations of all of the teachers of being the second best student in my class of 41 kids. She is in higher level classes, she has to devote all of her lunch period and all of her time at home doing homework, she barely gets any sleep, she is depressed, her girlfriend has anxiety and she feels the need that she needs to fix it because no one else will, and I have seen her get so stressed that she burst out crying in the bathroom. On top of that she is a lesbian that is not accepted by her parents because they are Christians and think that she will just "get over it". It is sad that the fact that my friends and I can talk about killing ourselves without even thinking about it because that is how we were raised and how bad our mental state is. Another one of my friends has thought about committing suicide because of her parents. She is so depressed I don't think that she even realizes it anymore. Her parents constantly berate her and tell her whenever anything goes wrong that it is all her fault. She has to pay for her own clothes and all the school trips we go on. The only time her parents ever spend money on her is through food. And she has child support coming in for her. They are taking that money and none of it is even going towards her. She didn't even know that she could leave her parent's house before she was eighteen and move in with a relative that can support her. I ended up looking the law up myself and that is the only reason she knows about it. This is crazy. They should start getting rid of the useless stuff and start teaching us laws and how to help us in these situations.
@@benelamay6427, I agree. In middle school alone I have had more than 10 mental breakdowns because I have to stay up all night because I have to study. And I haven't even mentioned high school! +J Carter you're just a hating son of a bitch who will only live in the rules, you are not a rebel, not a renegade, you are a bully that is dull and is spending more time commenting disgraceful words on a very meaningful song.
@Julio Cesar yeah, that's by far the most hardest drop of them all, almost like the chorus of this song. But to put it blunt, I have no idea why on earth schools insist on condom advice over actual childcare. I don't see any viable explanation as of why so many schools often prioritize this to be inside their school curriculum. p.s Agreed
@Julio Cesar Aye, schools are really vague about what's worth teaching the kids when it comes to these sensitive subjects. I'll be turning 15 soon and I had to watch some UA-cam videos just to learn how to use a condom. (Not that l'm actually sexually active, but as some just-in-case knowledge). The school's tactic of this "We have too many humans but teens aren't ready for decisions and explanations." Is pretty flawed. 90% of the people who graduate school will at least have families of their own, so it's only necessity to properly teach them how to become good parents. And getting kids can honestly happen to anybody regardless of wealth or job status. But If they're choosing to actually stick with that mentality. School's should've taught this in developing countries because that's where all the birth rates are rising in. Or fck it. If they want to slow population boom so badly then why not tell children to never have sex entirely.
@@benjaminparent4115 dude rly first of all he just said he liked a lyric of the song. Second of all get out of here u probably went to a private school to learn any of that cuz there's no way in the fresh hell u learned that in public school so get out of here rich and privileged. Third of all stop being a frackin karen. Get out of here with ur "education" bs
Don't get angry and spout insults that is the quickest way to shut down debate. I get where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. If you taught parental skills on a basic level it would help immensely. The state already has a monopoly on education. The only way to get it back, is to educate the population into understanding they have a vote and how to use it. We do not live in a dictatorship yet, you can go to every town hall meeting and discuss the curriculum and how you would like it to change. The state should be teaching personal responsibility. They should also be teaching the basic of child rearing. You do not need to teach people how to raise their children politically, only to communicate and how to do that. Changing diapers, what milestones and age they should be at, how to play with them to encourage development, how much you should be spending on average, the health benefits of breastfeeding, exc. I see absolutely no problems in teaching basic child rearing. If you're worried about tyrants having control over education, you should be worried about that when they first created public schooling. I think putting control of education into the hands of the student would only help with that. After all, right now all they learn is what the state dictates. They have very little control over what they learn, and if they do it would eat up all the free time they could spend on their Hobbies.
@@benjaminparent4115 Well, they could at least show the different psychological effects different parenting methods have on children. Those are facts, and they don’t actually tell you directly how to parent, just what to expect if you parent a certain way. You make a good point but there is still opportunities to make the system better
@@benjaminparent4115 I also don't agree that children aren't smart enough to realize what they will need for the future. Try to remember what it was like being at that age. There is nothing wrong with a basic education on child rearing. Majority of the population are parents, not necessarily good parents but parents nonetheless. It is a vital skill and one that needs to be taught. It is a very rare individual that does not want or cannot have kids. I'm not saying to force those people into a child care class I'm saying more options would be beneficial. Children should absolutely get to choose what they learn. they are not stupid. Forcing children into subjects that they do not enjoy will not force them to learn it will only force them to memorize and comply.
@@benjaminparent4115 how do you expect to teach critical thinking and self-sufficiency when they are not allowed to choose their courses? If you cannot trust them to go to the bathroom by themselves, how can they even be trusted to explore a career? There's nothing wrong with tunnel vision. It just means that you excel in a certain area. There is no point in forcing a student who has no interest in art to pursue it. It is a waste of their time. There is no point in telling students what they should learn. If they are not interested in a subject they will not absorb it. You can disagree that child rearing is not important all you want. The basic fact is if you do not teach children to parent, they will always be children. The quickest way to allow your children to grow up is to treat them like adults. It is extraordinarily patronizing to them when you tell them what to do. You imply that they have no agency or intelligence and that is insulting. Do you see how quickly the conversation with them breaks down when you are coming at a position above them? I understand talking down to a 3-year-old. That should stop by age 12. You're an absolutely no position above them after 12 years old. The teachers should stop acting like Lords and more like public servants. They should serve our children the knowledge that they want to have. There is no reason why children should not pursue what most interests them. Self-taught learning is a very real, and very effective method. Imagine if you could, a school system in which a student is allowed to take control of their learning. How much specialization would you see in the workforce? Everyone seems to want the same thing but they disagree about how to get there. You say you want more problem solving. You don't get that with a memorization curriculum. You get that by giving them problems to solve. They should face immense but controlled problems in the school system. How to manage a schedule. How to choose what courses are best for them. How to arrange their day in the way that benefits both social lives and their sleep. You say you want problem solvers, but the system that you promote only gives us drones. And they are pissed as they have every right to be because we have failed them on every level educationally. Why do you think homeschool children and private school children do so much better in society? Could it be because they actually have a bit of ownership over their learning? Could it be that they're not jammed into a dictatorship of teacher versus student? You want one thing, but support the thing that gives you the same results. Please reconsider.
Jakub Hampl Wow, and so does many people. Guess what, I actually promote human rights as well, does it make me entitled to steal your money or tell your what to do? (and lock you up if you don't do it) Can you even define theft? Tell me how you think it's different from taxation. And inb4 'muh democracy' - it isn't an answer here, why would i care if 'the majority' thinks i should go to school, not be able to own a gun, corss the road on the red light or give all my money away for free? Democracy is the only solution we have in some cases, but a strong constitution is what guarantees our right, not government, the 'majority' shouldn't have a say in many cases it has nowadays. State (hopefully a minimal, night-watchman one) may provide and guarantee some rights to its citizens, but none of those matters when the sole right of every man is being violated, that right is freedom.
@@titash3973 I would love for that to be a good idea but it would make children less unique because they would have been raised a certain way. Also a large part of parenting is teaching your child about the politics that you agree with and if you are taught how to parent by the schools they would also have to teach you politics (not just general politics they would be very one sided about their wing) which I am sure violates some right. I do agree with the rest of the song #DON'TSTAYINSCHOOL
@@georgedriff5156 there are ways to teach how to parent without teaching politics. Like, "good parenting" could be about stimulating you're kid so they can have critical thinking and find what they like to do and/or what they're good at (also learn how to be affective and still being able to put limits) . The problem with that is that if you wanna raise a kid like that, you have to have critical thinking or school should teach you how to have it but, how do you teach something you don't know?

Even if you want to learn about finances for your country there are courses for that in school. Yes, it's true that in high school you won't use 90% of what you're taught. But you'll use maybe 5-10%. And then someone else will use a different 10%. And all of the knowledge gets spread out through everyone who's going into different jobs and post secondary-schools. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean someone else isn't. So they teach everyone a general understanding of everything so it will be easier for people to specialize in one thing. If you want to learn about first aid or stocks or politics in high school than take the appropriate course. Or take a course outside of school. Or hire someone with a university degree in the subject. It's not hard.

The educational system is worth longer than a few words but this song is making good points, given you look at it right. I come from a different system not part of UK and now I'm studying uni in UK, I can say for myself I prefer this system as its more practical oriented but you have to keep in mind, different cultures have different learning systems and ofc there's worse and better
"All this advice about using a condom, but none for when you actually have a kid when you want one" This line hit so hard, as i just finished learning about contraception. I want a kid when i grow up, but all ive learned about is stopping it. One of my friends actually said that if someone wanted a kid they would do their own research. But isnt the point of school to prepare you for the future?!
The current education system also causes kids to despise learning and lose their curious appetite towards the world because they simply aren't going to concern themselves with issues that don't have an immediate impact upon their lives.
+Evan Urena =) Yea, and praising or neglecting students based upon their merits of subjects that the schools have deemed important is ridiculous. It sets students, who have an interest in other subjects outside of school, up for failure because they are labeled incompetent simply due to not adhering to conventional book-smarts. The schools neglect them as they are deemed failures in their eyes; the students emulate the labels given to them and become delinquents; and potential brilliant minds are lost because of the inefficiency of the school system.
+Frank Exactly, well said. Focusing on grades, exams, and rigid benchmarks rather than learning is a complete deficiency in education. The students are more focused on academic status to impress colleges rather than focusing on their own goals to be self-actualized about their futures. The government really does not know much about education as they mostly care about standardized protocols only relating to accolades of exams, grades, and rigid requirements rather than learning. They are more centered on authoritarian preconceived notions on what they think a child should know to be educated, when they themselves did not use a lot of the stuff they learned in school and fail to realize that kids are individuals just like they are. Obama says kids need algebra, yet an everyday person like himself barely ever uses it. I'm a math geek, so if i asked him a problem in a slightly advanced topic on algebra such as the properties and inverse relations of exponential and logarithmic functions, he would look at me in a clueless and oblivious manner? Why? Because he does not need algebra to do what is capable of doing in his daily job, so why does he assume that every high school kid needs algebra when each of them have different goals of wanting to survive in the real world. I have no hatred for Obama, but politicians like him always contradict themselves about the problems behind education reformation, because they are naive about it. Leave it to the democratic/progressive schools, education reformists/activists like Alfie Kohn, and professionals in various careers to fix the education system and help kids become more self-actualized about their futures, not a politician or corporate conglomerate who is so concerned with standardized test scores, letters, and numbers all because we want to rank higher than China.
+Frank well, because education is only third of it's goals. #1 is indoctrination ("socialization", they call it) into the current socio-political system. #2 is "daycare", so that adults can go work in a double-income family, where both of them are taxed of half the income, and children are left to the State for #1.
Most things are important based on what job you want when you grow up, plus if kids don’t learn this stuff, then the world will never get more innovative. But I do agree that some of the stuff you mentioned about being a basic adult should definitely be taught.
The stuff about being a basic adult is absolutely taught lmao. Most schools offer Home Economics and such. Also learning “useless” knowledge is still incredibly useful because it teaches you how to learn, which is a skill in and of itself. I wrote another reply to someone else that I’m going to paste her because it addresses a lot of this: “Same here. Then I grew up and realized he’s so wrong about everything lmao. Most schools do teach what he is complaining about, classes like Current Events and Home Economics are incredibly common. Financial Literacy is often taught as well, I learned it and I went to a small and underfunded public school. I was absolutely taught “what laws there are” as well. Not to mention that the main purpose of school isn’t the information that it gives you, like Boyinaband seems to think, it’s the experience, work ethic, self-application, socialization, routine, etcetera. School prepares you for real life in that way. Sure, will you really need the quadratic equation when you grow up? Probably not. But knowing how to learn a foreign and intangible concept is absolutely a skill you will use. Sorry for the rant, I just really hate when people have this specific complaint about the schooling system. It has its faults, but not this.”
I remember doing math test during my sophomore year of high school muttering "negative b plus of minus the square root of b squared minus 4 a c over 2 a, that's insane...."
Actually got a teacher in a small school who was inspired by this song and made a class based around it called "Life Skills". I think that that's pretty fucking awesome.
I don't know what the schools are like in your country, but I attended a university which actually provides life skills (financial advice, creating routines, understanding various concepts of modern life, cooking, emergency instincts, etc). The teachers at that uni even admitted that schools which teach traditional topics don't really help you develop as a person.
@@panda98624 Never said he was, just that that's the only part I recognized. Also I feel like even if the allegations are false, that he should have at least made a video explaining that they are false, and give evidence as to why. "AND INSIST THESE POINTLESS THINGS don't stay in school" is the line that I find 99% of people miss. They're not saying don't go to school, they're saying that schools teach too much abstract concepts and not enough real world lessons. School should be teaching stuff kids actually need. Like they literally say at the end: "If you can't explain why a subject is applicable to most people's lives, _that subject should _*_not_*_ be mandatory_ "
Also add a lining to Mandatory. They can and should stay in School, but in advanced classes focused on these things. If you only learn something like „mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell“ people would not care.
It's literally blasted all over the lyrics of the song yet people choose to take the one line out of context and trash the whole song because of it smh
The sad/scary part was that the stuff that the teachers do teach, i dont know about. Also i strongly agree abt the mental health thing. There was a girl in my class who was bipolar and suicidal. I could've been there for her, but i didnt even understand suicidal meant. I hope shes ok.
Same. I thought bipolar was a joke like how people use retarded, i only thought that because a "friend" said it was. And then i was calling a kid bipolar cuz i thought it was a joke and the next year he was making threats of self harming

They don’t really want you to know about those subjects… They don’t want you to know how money really works either. If they taught us the truth about it, we would be pissed!
This is correct. Id rather learn how to pay my bills or cook properly instead of math that i won't use at all outside of the classroom. Kids would like school more if they were actually educated
And how exactly do you intend to "pay your bills" which is a numbers-based-action if you can't even do basic math? Or do you still expect someone else to do all the math for you, and then the part you needed to learn was where to copy-paste those weird letters that you can't read or understand in?

Is the education where you guys live really that bad? Here where I live, we learned almost all the things he mentioned in the video. Another important factor at play here is that a lot of kids just don't give a shit and don't care what they learn, so even if you teach them the important stuff, they'll forget it.

Schools really need to teach about mental illness and basic emotional things bc dear god I’m tired of kids bullying each other and making fun of the mentally ill. It’s like being in a prison.
well, last week we had a social internship as part of the school curriculum where we went to places like a nursing home or children daycares for disabled children. We had to work with them, etc.
Luckily, schools (at least here in Australia) have started teaching about mental illnesses and how to spot and treat them, now the only problem is most of the kids not taking it seriously and thinking it’s one big joke
They dont. They need to teach basically all the things in this class (finances, first aid, and one that isnt included in the video: survival in the wild) classes like that can be electives.

Below is a link to the Document I have sumerised here. www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights So now you know what rights there are. I would encourage many of the people in the coments to pay particular attention to to numbers 10, 11 and 12 (just sayin)
Many of these "rights" sound insane quite frankly. You don't have the God given right to make other people work and pay for you. "25. You have the right to an adequate standard of living (food, Clean drinking water, shelter, healthcare, social security help and so on)" These people have lost their minds. That is in direct violation of other peoples rights "4. You have the right not to be enslaved in any form"
@@JasonBrossa Any two rights that are not the same are automatically at conflict which each other and you are reading into them too literally. The implication of those two are that to act morally a nation should take care of the less fortunate when reasonably possible. In the context of our world they make perfect sense and human rights are fundamentally a contract between states about the treatment of people. In our world we have states and they have power by the simple virtue of existing just as money has power. Human rights interfere in how that power shall be used. No slavery is required because humans inherently give power to states by their free will or by the nature of power dynamics whichever you want to believe.
All human beings are born not Free and some humans are more equal then others while the lower "Equals" Are Wage Slaves until Death or either Disabled. There I fixed it for you.

School is the leading cause of depression anxiety stress sleep deprivation and suicide wonder why

The moment after I read this line, that line played XD

Wow, and so does many people.
"Then if you taught the kids to parent that's the problem solved then..."
That hit hard.
It is also a poor idea.
@@georgedriff5156 why?
@@titash3973 I would love for that to be a good idea but it would make children less unique because they would have been raised a certain way. Also a large part of parenting is teaching your child about the politics that you agree with and if you are taught how to parent by the schools they would also have to teach you politics (not just general politics they would be very one sided about their wing) which I am sure violates some right.
I do agree with the rest of the song
#DON'TSTAYINSCHOOL
@@georgedriff5156 there are ways to teach how to parent without teaching politics. Like, "good parenting" could be about stimulating you're kid so they can have critical thinking and find what they like to do and/or what they're good at (also learn how to be affective and still being able to put limits) . Everything he just said is true. I'm not saying everything taught in school is useless. But why don't they teach us this stuff?
***** this is the problem the schools think oh duh the parents teach this but what if the parents don't have enough time to do that what if they don't know how to answer these queries and questions that's just where the problem begins

The current education system also causes kids to despise learning and lose their curious appetite towards the world because they simply aren't going to concern themselves with issues that don't have an immediate impact upon their lives.
+Frank I love you right now, no homo. You just perfectly summed up the biggest problem of the public education system in one sentence.
#2 is "daycare", so that adults can go work in a double-income family, where both of them are taxed of half the income, and children are left to the State for #1.
so true
Most things are important based on what job you want when you grow up, plus if kids don’t learn this stuff, then the world will never get more innovative. But I do agree that some of the stuff you mentioned about being a basic adult should definitely be taught.
The stuff about being a basic adult is absolutely taught lmao. Most schools offer Home Economics and such. Also learning “useless” knowledge is still incredibly useful because it teaches you how to learn, which is a skill in and of itself. I wrote another reply to someone else that I’m going to paste her because it addresses a lot of this:
“Same here.

"AND INSIST THESE POINTLESS THINGS don't stay in school" is the line that I find 99% of people miss. YOUR RIGHTS 30 HUMAN RIGHTS (you're welcome)
1. All human beings are born free and equal (right not to be discriminated against)
2. Everyone is entitled to these rights, regardless of factors beyond their control (sex, age, race etc. It's kind of like number 1, but specifically pertains to the document itself)
3. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person (you can't be imprisoned, assaulted, or killed without a damn good reason, like you commited a crime for instance.

9. No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. (verbatim, self explanitory)
10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him. (everyone is equal in law)
11. You have the right to be presume innocent until proven guilty in a court of law where you were given all aplicble defence. Also you cant be punished for a crime retroactively (in other words you can't be punished for commitiing a crime that wasn't a crime at the time you did it, and you can't be given a harsher sentence now, if the penalty was less at the time you commited the offence)
12. You have the right to privacy and not to be slandered or have your private corespondence messed interfeed with (right not to be bugged without a warrant, that sort of thing) and the right not to be slandered or defamed.

14. You have the right to asylum
15. You have the right to a nationality. nobody can be denied their nationality, or denied the right to change their nationality legaly
16. You have the right to a family and to marry whoevery you want, provided everyone is consenting and of legal age.
17. Everyone has the right to property, and to not be deprived of that property without a legal reson.
18. You're entitled to believe what you like and to be a member of any religion you want
19. You have the right to freedom of expression and opinion
20. You have the right to peaceful assembly and association, and the right not to be forced to be a member of any group you don't want to be a part of
21. You have the right to vote, and take part in the politics of your country regardless of sex, race etc
22. You have the right to social security
23. Everyone has the right to work and to not be forced to work, everyone has the right to be paid equally and fairly and the right to belong to a trade union
24. Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay. (verbatim)
25. You have the right to an adequate standard of living (food, Clean drinking water, shelter, healthcare, social security help and so on)
26. You have the right to education
27. Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits. Everyone has the right to the protection of the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author. (verbatim, but the two parts before and after are numbered and would fuck up my numbering here lol)
28. Everyone has the right to live in a society that observes these rights
29. Everyone has the right to live in a society where everyon has a duty to uphold these rights
30. nobody has the right to interpret any of these rights as permision to deprive you of your rights (basically lol)
I have summerised many of these for brevity (and because I honestly don't know how many characters you're allowed in these coments lol). If i have misinterpreted any of them please forgive me and of course feel free to correct me in the coments. Some juristictions have adional rights enshrined in law that apend to this, such as the american constitution, wherein the first amendment details the "bill of rights". Also the European human rights act both of which I encourage you to read. Below is a link to the Document I have sumerised here.
www.un.org/en/about-us/universal-declaration-of-human-rights
So now you know what rights there are. I would encourage many of the people in the coments to pay particular attention to to numbers 10, 11 and 12 (just sayin)
Human rights are a bit like money, they only have value as long as other humans believe in them.
31: Kids shouldn't be diddled.

Wikipedia have a lot of dates wrong about history
@@jmplayt5442 yeah but you can fact check most of it on other websites like Nat geo or encyclopedia websites. It's just more convenient to use Wikipedia because it's accurate like 98% of the time
I'm actually lucky that I have a fun history teacher who talks to the students for half the class so we can get to know more people and then the rest of the half he teaches, and he actually teaches well, he asks us to guess what words mean before he tells us and even asks for examples so he knows that we didn't just look it up, I got lucky with my history class, I might make a couple friends from there which is a big deal cause I can't make friends easily
@@PotatoSalad9900 yeah i have a great history teacher too. I just dislike the curiculum
Me too
Thanks to this I can remember the equation..
Alexis Bell quadratic?
Alexis Bell Me too, but I'm 39 and I have not needed to know that one day in my life.

Being a teen around halfway through Highschool coming back to this song. I know all of the school taught things and none of the stuff he said he didnt know. In 8 years nothing has changed :D.
Idk where you’re going to school cuz I know like everything he was talking about. And I’m also a teen halfway through highschool.
@@qwertyasdf4081 I don't know how to vote, I don't know first aid, school has taught me very little about mental health and I go to one of the best school in my state.
@@shlumpyslinky9554 what state do you live in??? Mississippi? I go to an average school in my state and have learned all of that and more.
Are you sure you didn’t just not pay attention during those lessons? It’s very boring to a lot of people. I know people who have had the same complaints that you have that go to my school, because they didn’t pay attention during those parts and don’t even remember them now.
i only know cpr (in school) and i am self learning a language but i gotta agree with you @@shlumpyslinky9554

School taught me what stress, bullying, anxiety, and depression was. Thanks :)

mr.kitloin I once told a teacher I was getting bullied and she looked at me for a split second a merely said ‘there are no bullies in this school’ and walked away
Anyone who can include the quadratic equation into a straight fire rap and actually make it sound good is one hell of a rapper. Keep it up, Boyinaband

My job resume: Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
My boss: You’re hired.
That’s how it’s done
Okay funny story, I added mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell to my resume once, and my boss asked me about it.
I showed her the vid, and all of the sudden she started crying and said "DAMMIT IVE WASTED SO MUCH TIME ON SCHOOL MY LIFE MEANS NOTHING"
