I like what you say here because I think it's generally true. Musical preference is subjective of course but Abba's music will definitely appeal to most people whether they admit it or not. Very nice melodies, often with a hint of melancholy that seems to flip a "sounds good" switch in the brain. The thing is, it also flips the "cheesey af" switch and they look like members of a creepy 70s suicide cult. So it's kind of f*@king with your brain on a deep level.
Oh would have liked to have been on this one! First ones that come to mind: 1) Paul WIlliams (Solo) 2) Bread 3) Air Supply 4) Partridge Family 5) Cowsills
My guilty pleasure are Pop/Electronic music acts. Portishead, Dido, Purity Ring. I've always been into Metal, Punk, Alternative & Artsy rockers (ie Bowie) i'm guessing my "gate-way" bands were Electro-Industrial bands like Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly.
Hats off to Dan for not only mentioning ABBA (my top guilty pleasure), but also for wearing what looks like a Heather Thomas shirt! I will add The Cardigans, Garbage, Olivia Newton-John and Blackmore's Night to complete my top 5. Cheers!
I have an old record guide from the '80s somewhere that gives all the Abba records one star and describes the music as "every song a smiley smash prone to promote cavities". They also gave AC/DC one star or no stars and said "they seem to be trying to offend everyone within eyesight or earshot". I love both bands. 🤓👍
Two guilty pleasure songs off the top of my head: “Cannonball” by Menudo from the Cannonball II soundtrack. Yes, that Menudo. Absolute ear worm, and it’s fantastic! “They won’t get me” from the Superman III soundtrack by the late great Roger Miller and the amazing Giorgio Moroder. A mash up that absolutely kills!
I have three (not) guilty pleasures. 1) Herb Alpert - whether it is the Tijuana Brass or solo, Herb Alpert's music always brings a smile. 2) Trout Fishing In America - a folk duo who have put out a few "children's records" which are really for parents. Great songs, great messages in the songs and clearly they relate to the fun part of being a kid. 3) This is the ultimate guilty presage - Richard Harris - A Tramp Shining featuring MacArthur Park. I LOVE MacArthur Park with or without cake.
Although it's not a guilty pleasure for me. The wonderful jazz folk singer Kenny Rankin started in the late 60s. I first saw him on Johnny Carson in around 1971 or 72. It was completely out of character for my 11 12 year old self. My other favorite was through my parents starting a life long love for Latin music. I still love Brazil 66. I will save my most guilty of pleasures for last. I still love the first four Kenny Loggans albums. I love his first live album. Him and his band are on fire. All of my friends think that I am nuts. Probably most contrarian audience probably do to.. I will throw in a Christian Hard/ rock metal band from the late 70s and 80s called The Resurrection Band, they were far ahead of their time. Believe it or not, they had outstanding musicianship and songwriting.not to preachy.
I love ABBA! No 'guilt' whatsover. I think The Visitors and ABBA: The Album are brilliant records, and Arrival, Super Trouper and Voulez-Vous are pretty darn good also. Favorite songs: "Eagle" (the long/album version), "The Visitors", "Soldiers", "The Piper", "I Let the Music Speak", "My Mama Said", "If It Wasn't for the Nights", "The Name of the Game", "When I Kissed the Teacher", "Me and I", "The Day Before You Came"... (Somewhat tired of the megahits.)
I love sharing The Visitors song for those who only know ABBA for their radio hits. The haunting psychedelic/new wave paranoid sound, Frida's great weird vocals, the outstanding chorus. It's a pulsating masterpiece and my favorite ABBA song.
The good thing about ABBA is, all their albums are like greatest hits I don't think they truly had a bad song they could've put out any song as a single and it'd been a hit. It's one of those bands where a best of album is not always enough.
My guilty pleasures are a great handful of the 80s radio airplay staples by the likes of Howard Jones, Rick Springfield, Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians, Cyndi Lauper, Dexy Midnight Runners and Men At Work.
I have always been a metal/hard rock and prog fan but my top5 guilty pleasures. 1. Tori Amos 2. Kate Bush 3. Bjork 4. Janis Joplin 5. Lana Del Rey Yes, I love the ladies.
My ABBA story. Back in the late 1999's or early 2000's I had music class in school and got the classic lesson of "Bring us a song/album by a band you love then talk about them". For some reason I didn't really understand the concept. I eventually asked my mom what band I should talk about since I didn't really have ONE favorite band. She said ABBA. I knew about them offcourse and it was easy to find information so I choose them for the lesson. Just to get rid of the homework. Bringing ABBA as a guy when you are about 14 years isn't the wisest choice. Can't say I really listen to ABBA by choice but it is good pop music. I rather listen to ABBA than plenty other stuff out there.
Hopefully it won you some female admirers at least! My daughter's friends (late 20s) all like ABBA so I think they have been reappraised by that generation.
@@DarkSideOfTheMoule Maybe! Nobody really said anything in that fashion but I guess a guy who say show up ABBA could get an edge over those listening Eminem, Limp Bizkit, Alice Deejay or whatever was popular at the time :)
I like Abba but even more I like The Partridge Family. They were huge for a few years, doing terrific pop, and David Cassidy did some great more rock oriented music when he went solo
I think a lot of The Partridge Family songs were great. "I Think I Love You" is a great song. The two opening theme songs were great. It's not "Dark Side Of The Moon" obviously but nobody says that if you like fine wine you can't like a good cold can of cola. I still listen to Partridge Family songs on UA-cam.
Just a bunch; ABBA, The Carpenters, Bucks Fizz, Les Humphries Singers, Barry Manilow, Jack Jones, Boney M, Kim Wilde, Madness, Kool and the Gang, Tiny Tim, Rondo Veneziano, Sheena Easton, Olivia Newton-John.
I like 60 Abba songs and I also like 60 Venom songs,no guilt...I may listen to Arcade Fire, DRI and Waylon Jennings within the same weekend,it's just different genres but if it resonates I'll listen.
I literally hide my Chas and Dave, Demis Roussos, Bread and Kenny Rogers CDs from visitors because I don't want to be judged (while all my Post Punk and Krautrock CDs are prominently displayed). I agree with Dan about Rachel from S-Club. I even got to see them live because my daughter was a fan! I saw the Sugarbabes live at the Hammersmith Apollo too but I kept that quiet from my mates when we went to see Killing Joke later at the same venue.
S Club7 were like the British Monkees. Made for TV. Pop music made a come back between 1998-2003 (Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Take That) The members didn't write any music or lyrics until the 3rd album along with a dozen middle aged unknown songwriters.
I know it's discussed both in the video and comments, but I'm also one of those 'there are no guilty pleasures,' but I do know exactly what folks mean. I often view it as 'popcorn music,' stuff that's fun and easy to consume, but not that filling. For me, I'm a sucker for pop music like Carly Rae Jepsen and a lot of the nu-disco movement, as well as the cheesy power metal acts that we see today that are virtually indistinguishable from each other.
Would the Partridge Family count? LOLOL Loved the tv show as a kid.. True story...30 years ago my apartment was broken into and all my CDs were stolen...but they left the Partridge Family behind !
I'm surprised no one on the panel is familiar with the great French singer Joe Dassin. He had a very successful career in Europe in the 70's. He sold over 50 million records worldwide. How could you never hear of him?! In Soviet Union where I'm from people went crazy on his records, my parents' generation worshiped him like a saint!
Electric Six was a great choice Jeff. The video to Gaybar is hilarious but Grant should make sure children and adults of a fragile disposition are out of the room when he checks the album out just in case.
OK, so the show wasn't about ABBA particularly; they're just a poster child for 'uncool' music. 😀 (Fair enough!) Too old to give a damn about feeling embarrassed regarding my preferences, but some acts I like that are probably not considered very cool: 1. Carpenters (just listened to them yesterday... once more) 2. KC and the Sunshine Band (disco does not suck!) 3. Glen Campbell (hmmm, does anyone think that "By the Time I Get to Phoenix, "Wichita Lineman", "Southern Nights" and the like are not good songs though?) 4. '50s/'60s crooners à la Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole 5. No particular artists or bands, but since childhood, I've had a certain affection for '70s Finnish schlager/disco music and I own a few CD/LP collections (Finnhits etc). Much of it is original material, but also a lot of covers, especially from Italy. So I guess I have a taste for schmalzy Italian schlager too!
Joe Dassin is a great singer Dan. My French ex girlfriend introduced me to his music. Jardin De Luxembourg is a good original album to start with. If you like him, you'll probably like Claude Nougaro too.
Bolan,Bowie,Eno clothes were not better than the Abba ones...a disco band?...well less than 10 ''disco'' song in a repertoire of 100 + songs filled with nordic folk melancholia...so if I listen ...well only with my ears....euh...what do i hear?...simply two of the best pop songwriters of all time+two of the best female singers...to me it's the same level of craft as the most respected and loved ones...Brian Wilson,Paul McCartney etc...they belong to that League in my humble opinion...and when I think about the quality of the recordings...I sometimes think they're the best ever...
If I listened to all the Beatles,Purple,Floyd and Abba songs ever recorded (which might take a month lol) I'd likely conclude that Abba were on par with the others creatively and musically and I actually like Frida's vocals more than Gillan, McCarthy , Gilmour so I wouldn't get burnt out as much from an Abba marathon.
I’m a hard rock fan by far, but The Greatest hits packages of Abba, Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Tony Orlando & Dawn as well as The Knack - Get the Knack would be on my list. lol
“Guilty pleasure” is on of those meaningless expressions used by guys like ____ to fill up a month’s worth of content. It’s like “forgotten favorite” - it means whatever you want it to mean.
There's nothing wrong with ABBA. I own every album. The Visitors is my favorite. I love The Monkees & Bee Gees. Great songs. My choice would be Gene Autry. I'm not a country music guy but I love Gene Autry. Back in the Saddle Again, all his Christmas songs. So good. I finally was able to see his 1950's TV show recently and realized it was very well made. I enjoy Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass. Not sure about this one as a guilty pleasure but I love 10,000 Maniacs, the Natalie Merchant years.
Well I listened to 38 Special,Oak Ridge Boys and Death last weekend testing new speakers, all from the south but not exactly similar yet I love all 3 somewhat equally.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Yes those 2 are eternal,it also has Helen,So Long, Waiting For You,etc ..They had a great streak of albums + non album singles...I also liked Frida's solo albums.
These are "guilty" pleasures because I shouldn't like them but I do: Jana Kramer Luke Bryan Jason Aldean Garth Brooks All-American Rejects Safety Orange The Weeknd Selena Gomez Issues BABYMETAL Limp Bizkit Muse Shania Twain Joey Bada$$ Rick Ross Black Eyed Peas Peter, Paul and Mary Jennifer Lopez Destiny's Child Skillet Saliva Guano Apes Usually I only like one or two CD's by these artists, sometimes more. If you saw my CD collection, you would get a feel of what I generally love and it ain't any of this stuff, normally. 😅
Unless you are just a die hard metal guy or jazz guy etc, I don't really get the concept. I have one...and only one thing I would consider a guilty pleasure over the years. Barbie Girl by Aqua. Don't like the band, love the song for whatever reason. Probably because all of the moments that song made itself part of my life every day when it was still fresh. I would never drive around in my car jamming that at full volume... I guess that makes it my guilty pleasure. The f"{ks I give about what anyone else thinks for the most part I guess. And I totally jam the Bee Gees when I'm feeling it. Don't feel like I shouldn't be doing it. Sorry for a bit of a rant I guess.. lol.
I have tried and tried for many years to like ABBA, but I just can’t. They sound like a cult or something strange and the music is just too over the top. I wish I could be cool and get on the ABBA train, but I’m gonna take the bus on this one.
Call them camp, call them kawai; the Japanese girl Duo Petty Booka deserves to be on this list! I can definitely see why someone would like Abba and I can definitely see why they might wear a disguise when buying their records. Taste is subjective of course but I think a lot of their music is quite beautiful but at the same time there is a huge cheese factor there. Very catchy and moving melodies on the one hand but often godawful lyrics and a creepy sort of Lawrenceville Welk vibe. Abba also kimd of looked like cult members. When I was as kid I entered my brother's room one day to find him listening to a walkman and when I asked what he was listening to his reaction was very strange. He got very nervous and was blathering incoherently as though I had caught him smoking crack and he tried to conceal the walkman from me. That was a mistake; he should have just said "Aerosmith" or some such. Now of course I _had_ to see what he was so embarrassed to be seen listening to and after a brief struggle I seized the walkman and sure enough, he was listening to Abba; Dancing Queen specifically. Obviously it was very much a guilty pleasure for him. I told him I think it's actually a good song albeit very cheesy. Nothing to struggle to conceal as though you were caught with an ounce of cocainr or a Wayne Newton album or some such.
Ill chime in about the KC and sunshine band, I have 3 albums and 2 of them are different greatest hits album and the third album i have is the debut, KC is a national treasure and please don't go was a huge huge hit at the time , boogie shoes 👟 and So many others , even the deep tracks have traction

ARBA? In my neck of the woods they’re called ABBA.
Abba was a great band
I’m a hard rock fan by far, but The Greatest hits packages of Abba, Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Tony Orlando & Dawn as well as The Knack - Get the Knack would be on my list. lol
There is so much wonderful music in the world..why limit yourself !
@@ericrobertson2024Until this day when Elvira comes on the radio I blast it and sing along. It's a fun song. 😀
ABBA (1975) is still my #1 album of theirs, it's so special and has two of the best pop songs ever on it; Mamma Mia, S.O.S.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Yes those 2 are eternal,it also has Helen,So Long, Waiting For You,etc
..They had a great streak of albums + non album singles...I also liked Frida's solo albums.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 It's their most rock oriented album too. Couple of glam songs, one prog song. Mama Mia has some pop rock with the bridge.
Never mentioned: The Roches.
S Club 7. Yikes 😳 I don’t think ABBA and The Bee Gees should be on guilty pleasure lists. The are legit bands.
Yup, S Club7 were like the British Monkees. Made for TV.
These are "guilty" pleasures because I shouldn't like them but I do:
Jana Kramer
Luke Bryan
Jason Aldean
Garth Brooks
All-American Rejects
Safety Orange
The Weeknd
Selena Gomez
Issues
BABYMETAL
Limp Bizkit
Muse
Shania Twain
Joey Bada$$
Rick Ross
Black Eyed Peas
Peter, Paul and Mary
Jennifer Lopez
Destiny's Child
Skillet
Saliva
Guano Apes
Usually I only like one or two CD's by these artists, sometimes more. If you saw my CD collection, you would get a feel of what I generally love and it ain't any of this stuff, normally. 😅
Abba and X are the only bands I know of whose names were palindromes.
Prog Rock band KAYAK
Elaine by Abba is a super heavy song if u play along to it on guitar and the lyrics are brutal!
I'm A Marionette is Sabbathy and Get On The Carousel is early Raven...
When I like a departure from my normal rotation I pick:
Die Verbannten Kinder Evas
John Prine
Natacha Atlas
Billie Holiday
The Manhattan Transfer
Me David Cassidy and Partridge Family
When I hear Desmond Child, I repel. That guy has written some of the worst songs ever recorded, if not THE worst songs ever recorded.
The play covers; mostly Rock and Pop Standards in a distinctly Hawaiian or C&W Style:

Hootie had great songs.... but he sounds to me like he is always singing flat, and it grates on me.
