    Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
The Cure - The Head on the Door
The Smiths - Meat is Murder
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Husker Du - Flip Your Wig
    The Replacements - Tim
The Cult - Love (I'm surprsed no one mentioned this one)
Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair
The Pogues - Run, Sodomy & the Lash
    Prefab Strout - Steve McQueen
    Killing Joke - Nightime
Waterboys - This is the Sea
The Style Council - Our Favorite Shop
A lot of non-metal and hard rock albums that I'm sure no one on the show likes but 1985 had a lot of great stuff

I fully agree with you on The Cure, The Smiths, The Pogues...and of course the genius of Hounds of Love album by Kate..they're all classic brilliant albums! I just separate genres for this show.

its always weird for me when i watch these panels because i was a complete Thrash guy in high school, but when i graduated in 90 i was losing interest in all the disappointing new releases of the last couple of years. then once grunge and 90s alt rock blew up i completely lost interest in new music and started investigating the previous 40 years of music i never really knew and a lot of my favorite music is new wave and goth and post punk of the early and mid 80s.

I used to have really bad headaches when I was fourteen, I went across the street to my friends to give him a tape of recorded punk stuff , I didn’t feel good, my head was throbbing so I knocked on the door, and he took the tape. In exchange he gave me a real cassette of hell awaits. I got it home, put it in and, wouldn’t you know, by the time the first side was over,I was okay. So there’s the beginning of my love of slayer.

Pete, the Hudson Valley Squares is more a heavy metal/thrash/ black/doom metal thing of late. I love watching it mainly for the personalities. I like a bit of thrash but don't go more intense than that. (Recently attended the Anthrax gig in London) Iwould love to see maybe a different show like you do with the prog stuff but just on the less heavy stuff. I unashamedly liked hair metal back in 87, I like Southern rock, 70's Glam Rock, some of the bands I know you don't like I do (GnR, Motley Crue, even Pearl Jam) but I still would enjoy seeing them being talked about. I would love to see an alternate show where you might talk about the Doobie Brothers, Great White, Sammy Hagar, Triumph, Thunder, the Scorpions, Journey. All these bands you guys do discuss but I think some of the HV squares are more into the extreme stuff. I grew up on a good diet of Led Zep, ACDC and the Doors. Soft rock, rock, hard rock, starting to get heavy but not going into the extreme.

For those who don't know. The Johansson brothers, that played on Malmsteens -85 album, had a father named Jan Johansson who was a famous jazz pianist. Died in a car crash in 1968 when the brothers were very young. He was very popular at the time of his death. His album "Jazz på svenska" (Jazz in swedish) where he combines old swedish folk music with jazz is still very popular and still sells pretty good.

Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (huge fan of the Fish era)
Yngwie - Marching Out (loved this album…guitars and vocals are killer)
HM: Anthrax - Spreading the Disease

Ratt - Invasion of your Privacy (saw them on this tour at Irvine Meadows. Had a power outage halfway through the show. They got it going again eventually)

When I first heard the album Seven Churches, it was on Montreal's CHUM FM metal show on Friday's nights at 11 pm. The host introduced the album like this: "Louder than Venom, faster than Slayer, here's Seven Churches by Possessed." Then, you could hear the theme song from "The Exorcist"... (the host always played the first two songs from each side.) I always think of that quote when I listen to that awesome album (which I bought the next day at 'Rock en Stock').

Do any of you know where the term "7 Churches" comes from? The Book of Revelation, the last book of the New Testament, chapters 2&3. These chapters contain the letters that were dictated to the Apostle John while he was exiled on Patmos. They were to be sent to 7 specific churches in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) and prophesy the future of the Christian Church, each letter referring to a different era. They lead into a discussion of the Apocalypse. You probably don't care, but I thought it might be interesting to some.

wow! how can one pick JUST 3 greatest metal/punk albums/releases from '85 or for someone like myself with my eclectic taste picking a top 3 albums of all time from this years is like asking me to make world peace AND stop world hunger, i mean, THERE IS SOO MUCH great music from '85, and then there's the in what order, again IMPOSSIBLE with TOO many of them, but i got to give it you for being able to just pick 3 albums, even spending some time with it, like a week?, it took me 30 years to putting together my top 10 thrash albums of all time, goddammit, and being a phenomenon for me as a genre, and with hindsight, like you talked about, i don't have Frost on that list as Frost HAD thrash elements they ARE/WERE a black/death metal band, and Morbid Tales was a full-length, hence the US/Canadian release, which is the reason i own the Metal Blade press, and luckily Banzai released the CORRECT version of the Emperor's Return EP, namely as a 3 track EP, and speak of the devil, yes Karen Slayer sounded different as like one of my closest friends Gylve (who's insane with numbers, after all he is an amazing drummer, and you wouldn't know how good he actually is, cause he COULD play Rush or Watchtower, the latter being one of his fave bands, but in Darkthrone he still plays REALLY TIGHT and ON TIME, as his motto is after all, as is written on their new album, the metronome should be able to follow YOU as the drummer, AND HE MEANS IT, and he DOES IT, now being a thrash AND old death metal maniac like myself, alot of the early thrash bands, specially the non US bands were HARDLY thrash, a term that after all came from the H/C scene, but Hell Awaits has about 30% thrash riffs, the rest is death metal, fact, and yes Seven Churches IS THEE first DM album, Scream Bloody Gore was the first DM album MARKETED as SUCH , and too many forget Necrophagia's; Season Of the Dead released in '87 too, and another thing concerning Darkthrone, as Gylve is a big fan of Stryper's debut full-length, i myself only like the first mini, and the opening track on Soldiers.., and the Writings on the Wall from In God We Trust, VERY metal song, spcially the ending, but how many of you did hear the Stryper reference on DT's, Old Star? NO? thought so, and i don't blame you and he actually got very disappointed by that no one heard it, but i tried to explain to him a few things like, it's really NOT that obvious, it HAS TO DO WITH THE GUITAR SOUND on a particular track, i don't even remember which track off of Old Star it was anyways, but fun fact there, huh? 🙂) and many shout out's, like both Karen AND Ryan, who's the one of you i hve the most in common with at the end of the day, and Ralph, and even Karen, Land Of Mystery, didn't see that coming, CUDOS, though it WOULD not make my top 3, and CUDOS to Ryan for the MIGHTY English Dogs, just don't EVER mention Manowar when speaking of English Dogs again, don't get fooled by the epic metal album cover 🙂 and no i'm not a Manowar fan, a bit too over the top and well, i'll give them the fact that they were an influential and unique band, and have many die hard's, specially die hard's, i feel Ross The Boss made some good points in Rock Fantasy's special featuring him, as what he and i don't stomach that well with their outlook and well, boys club so to speak, as Metallica were the reason for them transitioning to metal punk on Forward... and coming full circle Epic Thrash on ala Metallica but ALL THEIR OWN, with their mighty and final album; Where Legend Began, now i have not only a love affair with thrash but with all things BRITISH in terms of H/C metal punk, thrash, crust(like the MIGHTY Sacrilege's ULTIMATE debut album; Behind The Realms Of Madness, PURE metallic Crust
