      @@joaquimsartoridesouzacampo301 NOPE. WHY would he spend 52?????? He has magic mirror and could see you have ZERO bid. He just needs to bid 1 GEM!
      And why does this riddle presume that Gordon will match you at the second BID? If he's gonna let you win the 2nd gold anyway he just needs to go ZERO bid and block your 3rd bid by 1 more gem. He knows he have the gem advantage and will enter the silver bids and win EASILY with his gem advantage.
      Gordon could spend 0 gem and you 24 gem at round 2. That means gordon HAS 99 GEMS at round 3 and you 51. EVEN IF you spend all 51 at round 3 he just needs to counter with 52 and he still has 47 left and you 0 for the silvers.
      This riddle is fail.

      By the way, on the serious side, are you sure you guys will not get into trouble with copyright issues? Even though efforts were made to avoid mentioning the copyrighted names, every Legend of Zelda fan will know the video was referring to that Nintendo series. Also, the protagonist also looks very similar to Link.
      But I hope Nintendo takes a light touch on this, since you are an educational non-profit org. Cheers!

    So Dongle collected the golden hexagons just to hold ONE auction? That is such a small brained answer to his troubles. Why not use the hexagons to make it so he can hold an auction whenever he wants, regardless of circumstance? That would be the best way to make the most of the limitless power at his fingertips.

    Gordon's fatal flaw here is that he bid 0 instead of 24 on the first of the gold hexagons which forces him to use an extra gem to one up you, which results in a disadvantage going into the silver hexagon bids....What a shame. Also, did anyone else notice that our hero lost a finger between 1:31 and 3:57? Would like to hear what kind of trick Gordon had up his sleeve that removed his opponent's finger.

      That's not quite true. If he bid 24 in the first round, you could bid 25 in the 2nd round and still win.
      1. You bid 25 and he bids 0, in which case he still has to at least match you in the 3rd round. If you bid 50, that leaves you with a 50-49 advantage.
      2. You bid 25 and he matches you with 25, he wins rounds 2. But now he only has 74 to your 75, so you bid 0 on round 3 and then head into the silver rounds with the same advantage.

    One thing I noticed is that the rules never state that gordon knows how much you have, so if he lets you win the second gold auction you could technically bid any number and he would have to +1 or match. meaning that the three silver hexagons you need are easily bid for since he would no longer be able to match.

    You can also bid 25 for the second gold stone. The reasoning at 3:34 is based on the simplified worst case of losing all draws. If draws alternate then any 1 gem advantage (regardless of multiples of 3) is sufficient to ensure victory.

      - He bids 24. We're 2-0 up and have 50 left. Then we bid 50, "lose" and he has 48 left. The prio is still ours.
      - He bids 26. It's 1-1 and he has 73 left. Then we bid 0 until the second round, Worst case, 75 vs 73 and the prio is his.
      - He bids 25. We're 2-0 up and have 50 left. Then we bid 50, "lose" and he has 49 left. 50-49 with prio ours, or 50-48 with prio his.
      - 50-48, prio ours. We bid 16 (silver):
      - He bids 15. 34-48, 1-0, prio ours. Then we bid 17s.
      - He bids 16. 34-48, 1-0, prio his. Then we bid 17s.
      - He bids 17. 50-31, 0-1, prio ours. 16, then 17s.
      - 50-49, prio ours. We bid 16 (silver):
      - He bids 15. 34-49, 1-0, prio ours. Then we bid 17s.
      - He bids 16. 34-49, 1-0, prio his. Then we bid 17s.

Your possessing the first tiebreak is enough to win a 49-49 contest even though Gordon has the mirror, which turns out to be oddly weak. Your strategy is to bid 17 whenever you don't have the tiebreak and 16 whenever you do.

      I don't think he can still win even with a bid of 24 to get the advantage in case of a tie.
      We just have to bet 25 to guarantee a win
      Here is a breakdown:
      Scenario A : Gordon decides to let us have the second round.
      So it would be 50 vs 99 going into round 3 which would become 50 vs 49 in our favour going into the silver hexagons and we can adopt a similar strategy of betting 17(w) 17(w) 16(L) 16(L) 16(W). The best Gordon can do is 0(L) 0(L) 16(w) 17(W) 16(L). This is just an example but no matter what he does we win 3 to 2 even with him having the advantage on tiebreakers.
      Scenario B: Gordon decides to win the second round for golden hexagon
      So it would be 74 vs 75 going into round 3 as Gordon would bet 25 to match us and get the win because of him having the advantage in case of ties. Round 3 both will bet 0 as it doesn't matter who wins the 3rd coin. We will get the 3rd coin but lose the advantage over to Gordon.
      Now onto the silver hexagons we just need to bet 25 everytime. Gordon only has 74 so he can't win more than twice even with the advantage enabling us to win 3 silver coins

    So happy I solved this one. I went to the notes app to work this out and got the EXACT numbers from the example solution. I bet 24 on the next gold to get ahead no matter what and then bet a third of what I have left to win 3 silvers. Great mental puzzle!

    Have to admit I racked my brain a bit until I realized it's impossible to get all the gold with Ganon-I mean Gordon's tactics and waiting for silver will leave him with 24 more gems than us. So the only possible way is to use the gold to force NotGanon into wasting his gems before getting to the silver.

    Fun Facts: Gordon is lost on move 1. Even if Gordon goes for 25 in the 1st bid, he would still lose. Calling 24 in the 1st bid is such a sick move of you. In the sense that it's the only way for you to win by force (despite the obvious information disadvantage). Other than 24, Gordon's win is guaranteed.
    Analysis:
    First, note that with any gem advantage, entering 2nd stage is completely winning. If it's same on both sides, the guy with better tiebreaker wins. Also note that, Gordon can manipulate tiebreaker by bidding the same number on the bid that he does not intend to win anyway.
    Gordon's Alternative:
    Let's see why Gordon still lose when he calls 25 in the 1st bid.
    If Gordon goes for 25 in the 1st bid. You can bid 24 in the 2nd bid, forcing Gordon to spend 25, then win the 3rd bid with 49.
    Your Alternatives:
    Let's see how Gordon punish you for other possible 1st bids of you.
    If you bid 23, Gordon can bid 24, then 24, then 0 (counter your 24, 25) or 51 (counter your 0).
    If you bid 25, Gordon can bid 25 (changing the tiebreaker),
    then 0 (to counter x>=25) then 49 (using tiebreaker when x =25);
    or x+1 (to counter x

    • @realdealbradleybeal7856
      @realdealbradleybeal7856 3 роки тому +4

      Yes, even if Gordon matches the first bid with 24 and gets back the tiebreak advantage, this time you can bid 25 on the second round. If he lets you win you will bet all 50 remaining, he will have to match and you will be going to the silver rounds with a 50-49 gem advantage. if he matches with 25 you will just bid 0 and go to the silver rounds with a gem advantage once again.

Gordon literally has no "good" choice to make in this situation other than drawing. *In both scenarios, you are up by 2* , with your gems being at 75 or 50, and Gordon's gems being at 73 or 48. If you are at 50 and Gordon is at 48, you can simply bet 16 gems every time in order to win.

    Okay, either this was not explained well enough or it doesn't make any sense:
    Our hero has already spent 24 out of his 99 gems, leaving him with 75.
    Our hero has one gold already. The solution is to bid "X" amount (let's assume 0) on the second gold and Gordon does the same, tying the first time therefore our hero gets the second gold.
    Then the hint suggests that the hero bids everything which he has left, which would be 75 gems, therefore we go into the second round with nothing so Gordon would win by bidding just one gem each time. Am I missing something or was this poorly explained?

    • @Enaronia
      @Enaronia 2 роки тому

      Unless Gordon wants to allow you to claim the third gold and win outright, he'll have to bid at least 75 to win the third one to stop you. So he'll be the one that spends that money, not you.
      Except if you only bid zero for the second one, he'll bid one and stop you there. You definitely lose doing that. You need to bid enough that he either spends some or lets you take it, letting you force his third bet. If he can easily win the second one then he wins.

      @@joshuapowers3270 No you missed the answer. If he doesn't spend gems on the 2nd auction, Gordon has 99 gems for the 3rd auction and you have only 51 gems. But you auction the 51 remaining gems for the 3rd auction and Gordon has no choice and has to pay at least 51 gems for the third auction.
      Therefor, you begin the auctions for silver stones with 51 gems and Gordon with maximum 49 gems...

    Am I missing something here? Since your rival knows what you'll bid he could just not bid if you bid on the second gold hexagon and then block you by bidding one more on the third and keep his gem advantage, and if you don't bid on the second gold he could just bid one and not bid on the third, in this case he'll go to the silvers with gem advantage and first draw being his.

      @67L48 3 роки тому +20

      Yes, you are missing something. If I bid 24 in round 2 and Gordon doesn't bid, then I win the 2nd gold for 24. I would have 75-24 = 51 gems left and Gordon has 99. For the 3rd gold, I would go all in, as winning the final gold ends the game immediately and silver doesn't even come into play. So, I bid 51. Per your strategy, Gordon blocks by bidding one more = 52. Gordon wins the 3rd gold for 52 and has 99 - 52 = 47 gems left. I still have my 51 gems. 51 > 47. So, no Gordon doesn't have an advantage heading into the silver round.
      Also, per your strategy there are no ties in the gold round, making your second conclusion is also wrong -- the first tie would still belong to me heading into silver.

      Well, no. Say you bid 20. If Gordon lets you take the 2nd one for that price, then you have 55 money left on round 3, forcing Gordon to buy the third one for 55. Then you've only spent 44 to his 55. If you low-ball the 2nd bid then Gordon should snap it up as a bargain to block you, if you high-ball it, then Gordon should let you take that one too, and can get away with a cheaper bid on round 3.

  • @johnschmidt1262
    @johnschmidt1262 3 роки тому +8

    25 should work as well. Because you win every other tie, so long as you have one more gem in the second round you can win. Split your gems as evenly as possible, make the lower bids first and the higher bids second. He Must spend as much as you do to get the first 2 gems, leaving you an extra gem to win the final auction.
    Winning the first tie is a decisive advantage, if you bid 24 on the first auction you should be able to win no matter what your opponent does.

      I think you are right about the fact that there is always a way to win by bidding 24 on the 1st auction but your explanation for the second round (I assume you speak about the silver stones) is not complete. Gordon can start the second round with the advantage on the following tie. He can decide wether he wins or looses the auction (with tie or not) regarding what you bid.
      Finally, I think there is way to win but the solution is not as simple as you described it.

    • @johnschmidt1262
      @johnschmidt1262 3 роки тому

      @@Peter-bv2ho I may not have explained it thoroughly, If you have even one more gem going into the silver round you should be able to win following my basic strategy. Yes Gordon can win ties but at the cost of passing priority to you. In other words he wins the 1st tie but then you win the 2nd, Then you pass priority back. I worked out for all 3 cases but long story short, you can control the amount Gordon is forced to bid and by the 5th bid he won't have the gems needed even to tie.

      Seriously give it a try, I will even tell you my bids in advance.
      24
      25 if I win, 24 if I lose.
      Everything I have if I have to 2 wins, The same number as you if you have 2 wins, 0 if we each have one win.
      Round 2, Divide is evenly as possible, Do higher bids later.

    • @Peter-bv2ho
      @Peter-bv2ho 3 роки тому

      @@johnschmidt1262 We saw in the riddle solution that if Gordon loses the first auction, he loses the game.
      Thus, he has to bid 25 at the first auction.
      Then you have to bid 24 and Gordon will bid 25 because otherwise he loses too.
      So you reach the 2nd round with 50 gems and Gordon with 49 gems (and the tie advantage).
      If you divide 50 in "even" parts, you'll get 16,17 and 17.
      I think that what you wanted to say is that you have to bid 16 until you finally win with 16 and only then, you bid 17... but it was not clear for me in your explanation.
      ... so we agree on the result from the beginning ;)
      Last question : When you say "25 should work as well" in your first comment, what do you mean ?

  • @Wildxmo

    Am I missing something?
    So 24 was bet first, then it was realized that the opponent was cheating. That's the setup. So now, according to the solution, you bet 24 on the second bid. Couldn't the opponent just let you win that one as well (bets 0). So now you have 51 and he still has 99. Then on the next bid, he bids one more than you do, no matter what. He'd be at a serious advantage going into the silvers.
