The evil wizard MoldeVort has been trying to kill you for years, and today it looks like he’s going to succeed. But your friends are on their way, and if you can survive until they arrive, they should be able to help stop him. Can you keep MoldeVort trapped long enough for help to arrive? Dan Finkel shows how.

Guess im a wizard
It annoys me sometimes how Rowling retcons her own statements. Deathly Hallows reveals that Ravenclaws have to answer a riddle to access their tower, so no Ravenclaw would have been stopped by Snape's logic puzzle.
Come to think of it, the defenses around the Philosopher's Stone were all kinda bad, since three first-years were able to get past all of them.
@@Shadohime Well, Hermione says a lot, not every wizard on Earth. Obviously that's the plainfield of Ravenclaws, who perhaps would have never reached it because the other defense were too though.
And yes, it's true, three first years passed them, well, technically only one did, but I'd say they were exceptional.

Ted-ed "Can you solve a riddle?" Me "Can you tell me a riddle?" Ted-ed "Nope, here's some math."
Gregory Blood these are riddles because you need to figure out WHAT maths to do YOURSELF. If it tells you to do an equation, that’s maths. If they tell you to figure out a strategy that involves math s but still involves logic, it could be considered a riddle.
Well it's basic math
@Mighel do PUBG We do what we must, because we can!
Sorry but the way the rules are stated makes it look the “distance” is measured in number of squares, not actual distance using the side of the square as unit of measure, therefore it’s a little bit of a trap
I fully agree. By that logic, if he can't just move diagonal or vertical...you can just move him forward or backwards on the same number
Using number of squares still makes the answer correct
0:52
If you're talking about 1:26 only, i guess you're right.
They gave you the clue that it was Pythagoras’ chessboard and they showed the unit to you using a circle. You just needed to know the math which is the point.

Ted Ed: Moldevort
Me: Sythagoras of Pamos
Rip Moldevort
Dribob you are first
Owowo it’s amazing
"Pythagoras" is definitely a clue here.
At first I thought you could only choose 1, 2, 3, and 4, since any other number wouldn't be reachable.
However, 5 is also an option, but if you choose it, you'll need to keep MoldeVort in a tight range.
You'll need to keep him out of the center 9 squares, as well as the direct edges (A3, C1, C5, E3).
You need to omit either 2 or 5, since if you choose both, 2 then 5 will kill you in just two moves.
Similarly, 4 means you'll need to keep him out of the center 9 squares so he can move edge to edge.
You need to pick at least one number of 4 and 5, since you can only omit one, so the center 9 squares are bad.
Omitting 5 would lead to the sequence 2, 3, 4, which forces you to move to C1, C4, then die, or A3, D3, then die.
This suggests omitting 2 is the way to go, leaving MoldeVort with choices of 1, 3, 4, and 5.
From here out, I'll refer to A1, A5, E1, and E5 as corners, and the remaining non-lethal squares as edges.
Everything is symmetrical, so only two distinct starting positions for MoldeVort exist: A1 (corner) and A2 (edge).
Imagine the board rotates and mirrors after every move to put MoldeVort in one of those spots if possible.
From A1, a pick of 1, 3, or 5 will let you pick an edge. (A2, A4, E4)
A pick of 4 will let you pick a corner. (E1)
From A2, a pick of 1, 3, or 5 will let you pick a corner. (A1, A5, E5)
A pick of 4 will let you pick an edge. (E2)
With that, you can trap him for as many moves as needed!

The first thing I learnt from this video is that The One Who Must Not Be Named (You Know Who) wasn't supposed be named because his name is copyrighted 😂
0:19 THEY *SHOULD* BE??
ugh, I need to read the rules more carefully, didnt realize diagonal moves counted.
Yea, felt cheated. Why dont we allow circles too, so he can run around like a madman.
To be fair it was called a Pythagorean’s cursed chess board, I didn’t realise either but it was foreshadowed/hinted at
They make a lot of emphasis on the word "center" and the example shows a circle, also the name Pythagorean gave a hint. To be honest I dindn't know it was possible and only realized after taking way too long drawing the board and circles all over the place.
Yeah I don't like this one. Might as well choose 50, and then say "oh it counts because you can go in a circle a bunch of times so you can't escape."
The problem with circles is the question says it has to be exact distance, which is impossible with only whole numbers.
Molde Vort : Haha! I’m in the middle nine squares! There’s nothing you can do!
Me : I’ll choose... uh...
**5 Minutes Later**

Person: “I need you to use the Pythagorean Theorum to save us!”
Me: “I failed geometry.”
At last I can use the pythogras theorem for saving my life
See, you do use Algebra in daily life!
Yeah because this will happen in real life
I didnt watch the video yet but i think the answer is:
its all about prioritizing spots on the chess board, looking for the chance to move to the corners of the chess board is the safest play, then the next safest play is to move along the edges of the board to maximize the potential distance from one side of the board to the one parallel to it. And obviously pick the lowest distinct whole numbers 1,2, 3, and 4
In summary: prioritize movements that let you get into corners and always try to move along the edges. Pick whole numbers 1,2,3,4. This should keep MoldeVort in the chessboard for as long as the person decides to stop, in which they would move diagonally.
I simulated this and no matter what whole number i chose, I never ran into the scenario that MoldeVort got outside the chessboard.
TED Ed: You have to pick 4 numbers
Me: * Don't take my turn until freinds show up*
Not only is TedEd blessing us with riddles in quarantine, but they are actually checking the comments
