why would they hire him? i mean its a valiant effort and he is quite the wise man, but he is just an electronics repair man, i dont see any reason for them to want to employ someone with the same or lesser skillset than the current staff at amd
why? i been repairing this shit for decades that doesnt help amd none actually pisses them off they want you to buy another card when you RMA a card you think you get a brand new back or the same you sent? lol all refurbished or a return of some kind anyways this was a simple repair the hardest repairs and time consuming is reworking the GPU or doing even harder in repairing pads/traces even into layers of the PCB ^the repairs i do and will cost you too due to skill level and time needed just fyi there are people who repair the gpu die on the package itself very expensive repair to have done lot of work taking underfill out and reballing those solder balls are like thick as your hair the balls under the whole chip you can see are much much bigger and some need microscopes to do those also if you were impressed with the CO2 trick dont be that has been done forever on electronics as in many many decades nothing new any repair guy who knows what he is doing has cans just to do that now really what all thse fuckers need is better heatsink designs i have a few they should hire me haha seriously im qualified been a competition overclocker for decades made many phasechange units heatsinks designs etc etc i actually was the 1 who cam up with the x360 cardboard mod to make it cool right not that dumb x claamp 12v fan mods people did and after you do my fix no matter what version you had fan never went 12v silent as can be 1st 360 i fix back then i figured that dumb design out was so stupid simple too just FYI blower style gpu heatsinks like r9 290x oem is the best for cooling air in and out and not blowing hot ram/gpu air onto the PCB and other components vrm etc etc only down side is the fan noise

I like your videos. I only wish you showed more of how you are diagnosing with close ups showing where and how you are doing this. It would have more meaning to those of us that are trying to learn! Just telling us that you are going to test the mosfets for proper operation does not tell some of us were to test and why.... how,where, why in close ups. You would not have to do this all the time, but it would be nice if you could do one very detailed work up on a mother board and maybe a video card that we could go back to, to see what you are talking about when you mention it in other videos. lol there are none for this its just simple knowing the problem and tracing back where experience comes in and researching and if still stuck or hit a wall you then decide if its even worth your time if running business now just for learning and or hobby different thing i did this for years then reselling got burnt out on them and consoles now im older i just like doing retro repairs and designing new stuff for them anyways reason why most cards fuck up is due to people trusting the oem fan profiles that run components too hot for sake of sound its simple the hotter your shit runs the less life it will have anyone running temps 80c and up are seriously killing the life of there card by years the GPU might run fine at 90c for x amount of time but that doesnt include everything else eg VRMS etc lol last gpu i repaired in a long time was my voodoo 3000 recently heat from many years use as i just bought it few months ago from ebay had warped the board till it popped the BGA pads and few balls had to reball it and was lucky the 4 pads were for AGP sideband signals and it was a PCI card i use it in my Amiga anyways thats 1 reason why you see the use a high temp epoxy either around the whole chip or in spots and it doesnt work yet they still do it eg 1080ti/2080
I learned by going to school that teaches electronics. You need first basic knowledge, then you can apply that basic knowledge to diagnosing things, buy cheap broken electronics and try diagnose and repair them.

Surely if the card doesn't work and you're SAVING the warranty sticker... That means the card is still in warranty and can be replaced? :P Also have you thought about maybe getting a PCI-E riser so that you can lay the card flat for doing measurements when plugged in? You should use alcohol to find components that are getting hot, far cheaper! Great video :)
Eli: Some of us cannot afford to purchase several hundred dollar graphic cards and that is why we try to repair or fix the cheap cards we have. Could you show working on some of the cheap cards out there which is more likely what we are trying to repair? I hope you will consider showing repairs on 1 gig or less cards. Even some of the parts on the more costly cards cannot be identified on the cheaper boards as there are cheaper parts on these lower cost boards! Even though this is a old video, I hope you will read this and consider helping those of us buying cheaper cards to try to learn how to do these repairs before we spend money on the more costly boards you are repairing here. Please consider the cheaper repairs. Thanks for the videos.

Hello Eli, I have exactly the same model of this card, on time 13:21 from your video lesson, I realized that we have 3 NCP5230 controllers, I have a question about the first one up there, which is closest to the BIOS switch , i found a short on PIN15 VCC, only on this pin, the other 2 NCP 5230 controllers are OK the measurements without any short, is the fault is only in this NCP5230 or the short comes from the 12V VCC line on pin 15? That means you don't have to sound extra bored, thinking this or that is nothing worth mentioning. On the opposite, if your intonation changes, the interest in what you say will rise proportionally. The exaggerated bored intonation is really a mood killer, sadly. Where is your passion? We know it's there, show it.

Hmm....Well, I'm going to give my card (Vega 56) a good look over...Hopefully it's something akin to this. I've own it since new, the card has never given me a problem, then suddenly my computer shut down a few days ago and the video card hasn't worked since. The computer is back up and running, but on a crummy GT 1030. Thanks for the video.
nice video, i wish i had skills and equipment like you. btw, i do have a sapphire radeon HD 7950 that kill all the system (no power, no etc, just dead) whenever i put it on a pci slot. system is back to normal when i dont plug those HD 9750 btw.

Very good job right there man. 3DapoBa, i know u're russian : ) Thing is, i like such a card, it looks very "clear" in comparison to RX 580 but still, i don't know why they are so long ....Anyways, just because it goes broken, it does not mean that cannot be repaired ! ok, but i do not thing a $700 video card or even more has to need a repair operation :( Even a GTX 1070 or similar card is very expensive to require a repair of any kind !
Do you repair cards submitted by fans? I repair some also, but your technical skill is very far above mine! You can do whatever you want with the card after the repair, send it back, keep it, sell it. I don't care. It is a GTX 970 and I'd love to see if it can be revived. I have a picture of the failure point. Unsure how it happened though.
Funny thing, I have a Asus Strix Vega 64 and I put a waterblock on it. Asus really spewed lots of thermal paste on it and I decided to leave it on resistors. After block was on, no signal. q-code b2 (no gpu detected) sometimes. Then washed away thermal paste with alcohol and distilled water. Now it works better and more stable than stock (used grizzly hydronaut paste). :D
It shouldn't be conductive. (I put thermal paste on the resistors and fill the entire area under the cooler for extreme sub-zero overclocking to prevent moisture and ice from forming). I don't know of a single company that uses conductive paste and every card I've taken apart has about 8x more paste than needed for air cooling, its always on the resistors, its not a problem. Sounds like you simply had a bad mount. Also that's an HBM card with interposers, and those are particularly hazardous and easy to damage. I would guess bad block mount the first time.
I live In Queensland Australia I have been fixing my own graphic cards up for while now I use to just replace them off of eBay for around about $200, but then when the miners started buying up massive amount of Graphic cards They started to become very expensive Tough there now a bit cheaper but last year graphic cards went from a few hundred up in to the thousands. It wasn't worth replacing them. But You tube has an amazing amount of information on DIY how to fix a graphic card Most of the time I found I would just get them fix, using a heat gun, but this would not work on ever one. Most of the ones this would not fix were cause by dead motifs But a M-meter across the 6-8 pin power supply told me I had blown a couple of motifs. measure the motifs from there gate I soon found it. You know I hardly ever found I had blown the GPU mostly it was the motifs. I take the card down to jar car they find the motifs I needed and from then it was an easy fix.

Wow, you're good. I've never seen that freeze trick to find shorts. Have you tried to diagnose ERROR43 on Radeon VII yet? Nobody has been able to figure out whats killing those cards! That error code 43 is costing people 1000's right now. Over $1800 a year if they are using them for mining coins...
Love your videos! You certainly know far more than I do! Any chance you could point an aspiring EE in the right direction on a card that gets the correct voltages everywhere but doesn't boot? Getting 12V, 900mV at all VRMs, 800mV PCIe, 1.8V on generator, 900mV / 1.2V on HBM, 5V rails are good... But she still won't boot :( Not sure where to go from there.

Get datasheet for every component in the boards and reverse the engineer, you will be like him.

nice video, i wish i had skills and equipment like you. btw, i do have a sapphire radeon HD 7950 that kill all the system (no power, no etc, just dead) whenever i put it on a pci slot. system is back to normal when i dont plug those HD 9750 btw.

Very good job right there man. 3DapoBa, i know u're russian : ) Thing is, i like such a card, it looks very "clear" in comparison to RX 580 but still, i don't know why they are so long ....Anyways, just because it goes broken, it does not mean that cannot be repaired ! ok, but i do not thing a $700 video card or even more has to need a repair operation :( Even a GTX 1070 or similar card is very expensive to require a repair of any kind !

Do you repair cards submitted by fans? I repair some also, but your technical skill is very far above mine! You can do whatever you want with the card after the repair, send it back, keep it, sell it. I don't care. It is a GTX 970 and I'd love to see if it can be revived. I have a picture of the failure point. Unsure how it happened though.

Funny thing, I have a Asus Strix Vega 64 and I put a waterblock on it. Asus really spewed lots of thermal paste on it and I decided to leave it on resistors.
After block was on, no signal. q-code b2 (no gpu detected) sometimes. Then washed away thermal paste with alcohol and distilled water. Now it works better and more stable than stock (used grizzly hydronaut paste). :D
It shouldn't be conductive. (I put thermal paste on the resistors and fill the entire area under the cooler for extreme sub-zero overclocking to prevent moisture and ice from forming). I don't know of a single company that uses conductive paste and every card I've taken apart has about 8x more paste than needed for air cooling, its always on the resistors, its not a problem.
Sounds like you simply had a bad mount. Also that's an HBM card with interposers, and those are particularly hazardous and easy to damage. I would guess bad block mount the first time.

I live In Queensland Australia I have been fixing my own graphic cards up for while now I use to just replace them off of eBay for around about $200, but then when the miners started buying up massive amount of Graphic cards They started to become very expensive Tough there now a bit cheaper but last year graphic cards went from a few hundred up in to the thousands. It wasn't worth replacing them. But You tube has an amazing amount of information on DIY how to fix a graphic card Most of the time I found I would just get them fix, using a heat gun, but this would not work on ever one. Most of the ones this would not fix were cause by dead motifs But a M-meter across the 6-8 pin power supply told me I had blown a couple of motifs. measure the motifs from there gate I soon found it. You know I hardly ever found I had blown the GPU mostly it was the motifs. I take the card down to jar car they find the motifs I needed and from then it was an easy fix.

Wow, you're good. I've never seen that freeze trick to find shorts. Have you tried to diagnose ERROR43 on Radeon VII yet?
Nobody has been able to figure out whats killing those cards! That error code 43 is costing people 1000's right now. Over $1800 a year if they are using them for mining coins...
Love your videos! You certainly know far more than I do! Any chance you could point an aspiring EE in the right direction on a card that gets the correct voltages everywhere but doesn't boot? Getting 12V, 900mV at all VRMs, 800mV PCIe, 1.8V on generator, 900mV / 1.2V on HBM, 5V rails are good... But she still won't boot :( Not sure where to go from there.
Can i use a 1.5v battery to chek where is the short instead of a power supply ? Thanks.
