I really appreciate these straightforward tips. I'm returning to Fairbanks, Alaska, where winter daylight is scarce, and homes typically have older features like small windows, chinked log walls, and strange ceiling angles for enhanced insulation. Most Fairbanks homes were constructed before 1979, and new construction is rare due to the high costs associated with shipping materials and labor. Affording anything beyond a hovel isn't feasible with our fairly average income. So, I'm a huge fan of practical interior design advice for cost-effective renovations. Essentially, we aim to make things look less depressing without breaking the bank. If we can't do it ourselves, it doesn't happen. The saying “If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and if it is broke, break out the duct tape.” is really taken to heart up there, and unfortunately, most people's homes reflect this mindset.
I thought white would be a great choice for my bathroom until I painted a poster board white and saw it in there. It was so bright--and it was at the end of December! The skylight, the shiny white tile, and the location (sunny Denver) made the room too bright for white. I painted it a medium shade of lavender and it was perfect.
The lower furniture trick is a gem & works well in rooms with 7'-9' celings. Just be sure guests can get up & off of sofas & chairs comfortably. (Choosing seating with arms is ideal.)
You and your delivery are so funny. Great reminders and great anticipation built for next week's dark and moody. I'd also love to see you cover good design in a finished basement (like, basements in post-war basements in more modest homes rather than giant McMansion basements).🏡
Thank you Nick for filling us in on the more technical and the more intuitive ways to improve our homes! I'd also really love to know more about sustainable interior design choices. There's so much green washing that it can be a bit tricky to tell what's genuinely beneficial vs just advertising.
Yess! I fully agree, I have a really hard time telling what is a good investments and what is a waste in that area. I've been watching for a while now and I'm always hoping he'll do a video on that at some point.
My friend invested in pretty cat furniture. It does exist but good looking "cat trees" may be more accessible diy. It's possible but a lot of work. Cats do need 1. Surfaces to scratch; but these can be replaced often so they don't look ratty 2. Vertical space ; this can be floating shelves with a few books or other unbreakables on it that they can navigate to other parts of the room. Part of it should start in front of a window they can look out of, if you have an upholstered chair that to a cat is perfection. Then something not far away they can jump to like a floating shelf or cabinet or desk, then the top of a Billy bookcase can be the end point.
I feel very privileged that my kitty overlords are willing to share their space with me so I am not at all averse to putting in a cat tree, paying the rent, buying the food and cleaning up after them. But, yeah, it would be nice if there were prettier cat trees. Not that they would stay that way for long but yeah. You should do a video about home decor ideas that work for catification (check out Jackson Galaxy) and don't look like you live in a cat cafe. In other words, please help me, I belong to three very active cats who won't use a litter box in a cabinet. Just a heads up, Jackson knows cats but not decorating. Please don't tell him I said that. I’ve seen nice cat trees. Someone needs to make an affordable(affordable being the operative word) cat tree. One that doesn’t look like it came from a 1970s Dr. Seuss nightmare
This is EXACTLY the video I needed. My fiance and I have ended up with a lot of antique furniture in dark mahogany and walnut. Between that, our small townhouse, having few windows, and gravitating towards green as a fabric color of choice, I've been feeling so stuffy recently at home. I've been trying to salvage it, and now I think I finally know where to start to make the space seem brighter and give it some overall more clarity.
This is why we chose a darker paint, Urbane Bronze, for our living space. We have 3 full walls of large windows with vaulted ceilings so it was crazy bright in there. lol
I did our powder room in a blue-black paint to complement the existing dark wood cabinets and black granite counter. I don’t know how much space a room needs for strong contrast to work, but our tiny powder room looks much better in luxe, moody, low contrast colors/finishes.

We painted the livingroom in b.moores cottonwhite. We also have stucco moldings on the ceiling, painted in clear white like the celling, in our east and west-window room. I think, this decisions makes our livingroom the most light and bright.(sorry for my english).
You mentioned, at the end, that low furniture impacts accessibility-can you do a video on affordable and accessible fixtures (e.g., ikea bosjon), furniture, layouts, etc?
Great video, I love light and bright, I’m having a new bathroom installed just now and I’ve chosen light floor and wall coverings as it’s a very small room ❤
Favorite general color is Behr Studio Taupe. I was surprised to see that its lrv is only 34. I had it in a north facing LR and DR (east facing). Large windows. Light wood floors. I loved it. I hate hot weather and it made it feel cooler but not cold.
I had stippled ceiling in a 1980s home I bought. Sanded everything off in the whole house and honestly it makes the home look so much brighter. It was as if there were so many shadows on the ceiling making all the rooms look so dark.
Nick, my flat has lots of light and I balance it with colors like BM Gentlemen Gray and Grey dove with a cream colored sofa and a gray print rug and accents of black wood for shelves and coffee table. decor like faux plants (I have no green fingers😢) and mirrors provide a calm and serene place. 😊 My kitchen is painted in dark color with light grey cabinets and white dining table set…creates a modern look. The bedroom is painted in greige color with khaki curtains, natural wood bed and wardrobe and dressing table in white…I use lighting to create the environment for sleep. Thanks to many of your videos, I could create cohesive look for my home. ❤
OK, you took the cork out of the genie bottle. How about a video on living with cats without having that as a dominant decorating theme? Less catification, more coexistence?
I would add that allowing air/light to move AROUND and UNDER things also creates lightness. Ex: floating vanity in the bathroom, sheer curtains, light fixtures that allow light to pass through, windows that open, sliding wall panels, furniture with thinner legs, getting things up off the floor and allow the eye to sweep across that surface without interuption (this only works with lovely and clean floors), mouting curtains high and wide, or shades above the window so none of the window is blocked by the window treatments when they are open, positioning furniture to not block the windows, opening the windows and doors to allow fresh air and light in, if desigining from scratch, position windows and doors such that you have a line of sight out a window when entering a room, or between rooms. Consider door swings carefully so there is egress space that is functional and not clunky. Mount tilt/turn windows on the interior wall (so the windowsill is on the exterior of the home), so the window can swing around and lay against the interior wall instead of opening perpendicular to thew wall and blocking egress internally. Consider pocket doors, transom windows, and stairs without risers to allow air and light to bounce and play around the space.
I have a ton of south facing windows. My house is painted BM Cloud Cover, a warm off-white, LRV 80. It’s great! It’s bright but warm and cozy and not too bright with all this light. I agree with you Nick - a lot of whites would have been way too much with all this light.
I never use white paint, but prefer cozier colors. Pale, but more like light linen or cotton. I love mirrors. But I cover east in the morning and west in the afternoon in my high desert summer... lowers temps inside 10 degrees or more. The opposite in winter gives me passive solat heat 10 hours per day. I admit this is the only place I lived where I chased sun this way. The sun is harsh here.
Thank you for enlightening me about LRV! I did not know that is listed with the paint colors! I just recently had 2 rooms of my apartment painted and it was very difficult to pare down, I’m still working on it because everything loose had to be moved out into other rooms and it was quite a jenga. I was thinking of light and bright, and my paint choice is 83 LRV, I have lots of windows and I’m happy with the color. I’m glad you spoke about color in the furnishings, because light and bright is not just white or neutrals. I think from my experience of the last few weeks of doing this, the most crucial part is curating the decor. Very hard for me as an avid thrifter and loving seasonal decor. There just has to be less to achieve light and bright. Thank you for all your insights!
The way my house is situated, my living areas- despite having three windows and sliding doors that lead out into the garden, are quite dark most of the time. But I love a light and bright impression- so thank you for this Nick
I'm really loving your videos, especially since I'm getting into art for interior decorating. Considering style limiting color palette to coordinate and taking into consideration trends that may react off the current ones.
Omg Nick!!!! I was think of you this morning. We just bought a new house. Please help me choose between November rain, morning dew, French canvas, and pale oak for the primary bedroom (which is large and has a lot of natural light) Pretty please and thank you ❤❤❤
Get big samples from samplize and move them around the room and see if you still like them all. If you’ve narrowed it down, see which samples you can buy accessories to blend with/match for your space. If you have a huge duvet and the duvet covers only come in brown and white (to pick a random example which clearly has nothing at all to do with my bedroom), make sure the color you pick works with that. Also, make sure it blends with colors you are using in other rooms.
And if you still need help, Google “picker wheel” and let fate decide for you!😂 you can input each color, click the spin button and see what it chooses for you. I find it super helpful when I have trouble making decisions.
Cat trees! I avoided this for years because the esthetic didn’t work for me. My solution was to get a nicer quality one with jute rope around the posts (instead of carpet), and I doubled it as a nice, multi tiered plant stand. It has a little hammock to the side that swivels which is where kitty wants to be most of the time on it. Kitty can still access to levels if he wants to look out the window. I think he actually enjoys the cute potted plants too.
If someone would create a really attractive ironing board, my house would never look cluttered. Actually, even with the ironing board out, my house doesn't look cluttered, just ugly! Surely the Scandinavians must have solved this problem. I also like a nice glass table to lighten up a room. You might have mentioned that when I was obsessing over my ironing board!

We painted the livingroom in b.moores cottonwhite. We also have stucco moldings on the ceiling, painted in clear white like the celling, in our east and west-window room. I think, this decisions makes our livingroom the most light and bright.(sorry for my english).
I'm excited for dark and moody! Light and airy for my living space and dark for the bedroom and ensuite!
You mentioned, at the end, that low furniture impacts accessibility-can you do a video on affordable and accessible fixtures (e.g., ikea bosjon), furniture, layouts, etc?
Wow This is the first time I caught your video early. I’m always a few days late.😂
Great video, I love light and bright, I’m having a new bathroom installed just now and I’ve chosen light floor and wall coverings as it’s a very small room ❤
Once again a very entertaining video about interior spaces. . Always refreshing to watch. 😊
Excellent/Helpful review of Tints/Tones/Shades/LRV...and exploration of the MOODY Vibe. One of your BEST. THX.
I like the most your point about visual lightness of objects in the room.
Dusting helps big time. Even if the dust isn't readily visible, l can feel it. The room feels so much lighter when dusting is done.
I completely agree to this. I can always feel the dusts lol
I was thinking of light and bright, and my paint choice is 83 LRV, I have lots of windows and I’m
happy with the color.
Considering style limiting color palette to coordinate and taking into consideration trends that may react off the current ones.
looking forward to the dark and moody version now :)
I like the color balance of the left room at 13:23.
Omg Nick!!!! I was think of you this morning. We just bought a new house. Please help me choose between November rain, morning dew, French canvas, and pale oak for the primary bedroom (which is large and has a lot of natural light)
Pretty please and thank you ❤❤❤
Get big samples from samplize and move them around the room and see if you still like them all.
Also, furniture sitting on legs or feet lifts the item off the floor and allows air and light to travel through, creating a lighter and airy space.
I watch for decor tips but mainly for your sense of humor!!! 😂
I just added to my ugly cat tree with wooden cartons, it's double the fun and double the ugly bahahaha, love u Nick!!
I like the black cat climbing up the side of the over stuffed bookshelf 😂😂😂😂. Don't get rid of the cat! Even if they leave fur on EVERYTHING!❤
I could listen to you for hours. As always your information is real. Thanks Nick.
Also people, open furniture in general. For example a big tv cabinet is going to feel a lot heavier than a decorative table with legs.
My favorite “white” is Maui mist it’s so fresh because I think it has some blue in it..
I live in Southern California
I feel like I knew these tips but it was so nice to hear and see it. Thanks, Nick!
Highly recommend SW High Reflective White (reflective value: 93). Used it for our 3rd floor sloping ceiling and paired it with SW Moody Blue.
Great info with a sense of humor! 😆
Do an aesthetic pet furniture video please and thank you :)
I love this guy
🤣🤣🤣Clean come on …declutter🤣🤣🤣… got me giggling ✨
I enjoy Nick! Love his sense of humor. I find myself laughing which is the best! Thanks Nick!😂
😂 clean
i LOVE you!!! "hopefully you have some windows...(under your breath) you're not living in a prison cell" I (emphatically) LOVE you xoxo😂😂😂🤣xoxo from a (young) old-time subber from the upper east side of manhattan
