I love thid video and i love the overmalled series! So many of our cities and even towns were over saturated with retail space, including my home town. There are two dead malls in my local town of Port Hardy canada. The dead malls here gave me my deep down love for dead malls❤
Hi Unicomm (productions) & Friends. Subject: JCPENNEY (Los Angeles location*S*) saturday dec 14, 2024 Wow. They're Already open at 9am (I know holiday hours). Normally even on Saturdays they would not open until 11am (and on Sundays 10am). Go JCPenney get those 💵 lol .
Gosh what a beauty. My heart sank when you told how badly it's doing. If I had the funds I would buy it and share it with all the awesome dead mall community! Wish I could get up to see it.
I was going to comment on your use of Phil Collins "Muzak" and I'm not complaining, I didn't think it was intentional until the end with all the references, and puns I would make :) That is a beautiful mall, the owners seem to be keeping it clean and maintained, it deserves to live.
It's funny; I really did hear both songs while I was there but because of copyright concerns I have to "tune them up" a little...but it was just too perfect to not recreate.
I grew up somewhat near this mall, visited lots of times. It used to have a very dark interior. I played in the play area full of these giant animals you could climb and sit on. (and…hi, Sal!)
I remember those days from my childhood as I also grew up somewhat near this mall as well. They did a nice job with the expansion and it's still holding up to this day. Sadly I do not think they will be able to rebound as most people go to KOP (King Of Prussia), unless they try to attract an anchor or two that are not already in the area. Almost forgot....HI SAL!!
Yes, the dinosaur play area was where the food court is today. There was a Time Out arcade there too as well as a Kay Bee Toys and the original Chick-fil-A nearby. The mall didn't have a traditional food court before the extensive renovations but there was a McDonald's on the lower level.
HI SAL!!! 😁 I love the ceiling/skylight. What a strange layout for a mall, building around an anchor store. "A comeback and this point is...against all odds." Nice one Kristin. 😉
Rouse co. also built Plymouth Meeting mall in 1966. Anchored by Strawbridges (turned Macys then Dicks Sportiing goods/Burlington) and Lit Brothers (turned Boscovs) with a 2 screen GCC Cinema. It had a very similar skylight overkill throughout.
What a beautiful mall! The sky lights and ceiling make the mall seem bright and have a cozy and warm atmosphere. I really like your videos. You have a beautiful voice and a steady hand while filming. As someone born in the late 70’s I never thought it would come to this; malls dying and closing. But with one stop stores and online shopping it makes sense 😢. Thank you for the video. I liked the small glimpse in the beginning of a small snippet of what it’s like to travel to film malls. I just watched Sal’s latest video in DC a few days ago.
Thank you, and this mall really is a stunner!! Mall trips are always zany road adventures whether I'm alone or with friends so I thought it would be fun to bring you all in on the shenanigans. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks again?
Thank you Kristin for another awesome video touring beautiful retail icons of the past. This is such an aesthetically beautiful mall. Well designed. So beautiful!! So glad you guys are documenting these relics of the past for future generations to see. They will miss out on those times we cherished spending them at our local malls. Thank you everyone at DMOD. Always look forward to your vids. PS, love how you used Phil Collins songs in reference to the status of the mall.
I love malls like this. I grew up in malls like Greenwood Park Mall and now North and South Park Mall. North Park Mall being my current favorite because it’s always busy and has my favorite bookstore (Barnes and Noble.)
I like the intro and format change! I hope in the future you make it to Florida as many of the medium and smaller malls are closing and being bulldozed into either Strip malls or vacant lots!
I grew up going to this mall! Thank you for the tour! I live in CA now so no chance of me getting there in the near future to see it. This is the closest thing! You did a great job. Question: is the background music playing in the mall or did you add that in? 😅
This is the mall where I spent many a hour when I was a teen in the 80's. I remember when they remodeled and I was so lost after knowing the mall like the back of my hand. Since Sears and Penny's closed the mall has been going down in tenants. I used to visit every couple of months because my daughter like one store that recently closed. It's sad because I much prefer indoor malls to the outdoor strip malls that have sprung up.
@@UniCommProductions In my case the strip malls definitely loose out on impulse purchases because if I was inside I would pop into many stores. But in the big strip mall up the street from Exton Square I will only go to the store I planned too, say the Barnes & Nobel's. I'm not walking around in the heat or the SNOW/COLD to just check out what in another store.
I went to school in Exton, at UTI back in 2010/2011. I'm not sure I remember it. I lived in Norristown, and drove past the King of Prussia mall and went there and that mall is insane. According to wiki, it's 62 percent occupied as of 2024. But in this video it doesn't even look close to half.
I think a lot of people expected that with the new redevelopment plans--with where Macy's is placed within the building it would be hard to move forward with any kind of changes with it being locked in the center of the property like that.
Ok… first song was Time Passages by Al Stewart slightly mixed in with something else? But it keeps going back to the baseline notes of Time Passages. Yes / no?
Presumably shopping elsewhere; there are very few stores in here and the mall is on its last legs. I don't expect it to be open any longer by this time next year unfortunately.
Honestly, it's so sad to see such a gorgeous mall so empty like this, from customers and shops. It breaks my heart seeing this. I wish more people would begin to visit malls more these days. But with many malls no longer having arcades or movie theaters inside the malls, it just feels like that's a big part of why malls are failing, along with not having shops that appeal to people these days. Perhaps more advertising would help.
I think a lot of it is that we don't really have time to spend an entire afternoon shopping anymore...back in the 80s it was still a little easier to get by on one, one and a half incomes in a household so there was a little bit more room for that. I know Exton was recently purchased by a company that wants to demolish part of it and build housing there...which, I mean, if you put coffee shops, a little convenience center or small grocery the apartments themselves would almost be able to support that.
@UniCommProductions I know. Demographics have changed greatly in the last 20 - 30 years, shopping tastes have also changed as well. The rise of online shopping in the last 20 years or so also has contributed greatly. I just miss the "good old days", ya know? Times have changed so much. Like how streaming has greatly reduced movie theater ticket sales, online gaming has virtually killed the arcades for the most part, and digital media has virtually killed off stores like Sam Goody and such for CD's, DVD's, and Blu-ray.
Agreed. We had the opportunity to put the brakes on this back in the 90s when they all started doubling and tripling in size, unfortunately. Hindsight is 20/20
@@UniCommProductions yup. I dislike how these malls affected small businesses and negatively impacted local economics. You get that temporary boost and then eat ten years of decline, or more
Third song I could not figure out. There’s a bit of Fleetwood Mac - Seven Wonders but I don’t think that’s it… Fourth song Phil Collins - against all odds and it again morphs into some other song and then comes back.
This is one of my favorite malls. It's huge and the vibe is just perfect. I'm glad that you pointed out the sun-bleached, dust covered fake plants.
Those plants might be my favorite thing in there.

You’re most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

Always love when you upload!!
So excited to see you posted a new video! Cant wait till tonight when i can sit down and enjoy it. Darn work and being a grown up. 🙄
Oh I get it...it's that darn work and adulting thing that keeps me from putting out videos more often!

A lovely tour of a lovely looking mall, thanks! 🙂

Take Me Home and Against All Odds were nice, if slightly modified, picks for this mall tour.

It was quite an era and I am honored for the opportunity to memorialize it.
Nice looking mall that's my age. The malls here near Tampa are so run down. Love your music choice too. Thanks for the great content.

I usually take a mall trip in the winter, so Florida is on the list.

Thank you for watching I love that I was able to help you virtually visit, the music was added in post.
EPIC VIDEO!!! FIRE CONTENT!! Maybe the mall would become a Kmart in the future.
Maybe. When they do maybe you should be the one to make a video about it.
HI SAL!!
I do kinda dig the off color of those "plants"
The color they've become is so 80's it hurts
Oh that outro (*chef's kiss*) 😀
Nice Phil Collins references. 🙂
I love this!❤ I love how airy it is. I know I’ve probably been here is a child. We lived in Bensalem and the Neshaminy Valley Mall was our local mall.
I need to get back out there for that one before it’s gone (and a few others). I just ran out of time on this trip.
Oh and Hi Sal 😂!
Is that Chick-Fl-A open? They usually don't hang out in dead malls.
I was a little surprised by that too.

Me too, and it confounds me they’re as popular as they are in places it SNOWS! I mean how is that an improvement at all?

@wendiseamus6143 Exactly. I feel like this business model hurts stores that don’t already have a lot of brand recognition.

Well, I sure am sorry filming 4 malls in one day lead to you being dead.😏🤪 As always, good video.
I got better though!!! 😂😂😂 as always thank you for watching 🦄
Second song easy.. Take Me Home by Phil Collins 🎉
Macy's is on the recent closing list that just came out today, along with my local. Pittsburgh Mills is surprisingly not on the list.
I think a lot of people expected that with the new redevelopment plans--with where Macy's is placed within the building it would be hard to move forward with any kind of changes with it being locked in the center of the property like that.
This is really a beautiful building. What a shame.
Ok… first song was Time Passages by Al Stewart slightly mixed in with something else? But it keeps going back to the baseline notes of Time Passages.
Yes / no?
First song was Juno by Sabrina Carpenter (obviously altered a bit by me)
Heartbreaking. 😪
Where are all the shoppers?
Presumably shopping elsewhere; there are very few stores in here and the mall is on its last legs. I don't expect it to be open any longer by this time next year unfortunately.

@IAmSladeKraven I especially do not enjoy buying clothes online. I want to touch and try it on.
@UniCommProductions I totally understand that. For me, I actually have to try on shoes and pants. Underwear and t-shirts I don't mind buying online.
Too many malls. They're all going empty while farmer's markets are doing pretty good.
Agreed. We had the opportunity to put the brakes on this back in the 90s when they all started doubling and tripling in size, unfortunately. Hindsight is 20/20
@@UniCommProductions yup. I dislike how these malls affected small businesses and negatively impacted local economics. You get that temporary boost and then eat ten years of decline, or more
No I don't mind.
7:23 and crappy sbarro pizza
Mall pizza sometimes crosses that line into so bad it’s good, but it’s not good enough odds I’ll try it 😂
LANDS END IHOP
Third song I could not figure out.
There’s a bit of Fleetwood Mac - Seven Wonders but I don’t think that’s it…

The 3rd one is licensed music from a service. It's not really a "known" one.
