I think one of my favorite things that Halo 2 Uncut restored is the Banshees fighting infected Pelicans. That would’ve done a great job of explaining how fast the Flood infected the city. Same goes for the cut dialogue where Cortana said that spores compromised High Charity’s life support systems. If we got the Warthog run it would’ve been cool if we got to see some more instances of Flood Pelicans being chased by Banshees. Also, in the storyboards High Charity had a clear dome. This might’ve been better because then we could’ve actually seen the fleet destroying itself, instead of a brief glimpse at the end and a line where Cortana says it’s a civil war.
"Flood-controlled dropships are touching down all over the city." --Cortana, just after Chief a flood-controlled dropship lands right in front of Chief. I think it's adequately explained in vanilla. Having them visibly fighting in the air is a cool detail though.
I’m aware of that. It would be a lot better if we got to see more examples of that instead of just a few instances and Cortana telling us. They also should’ve included Cortana’s line about how Flood spores compromised High Charity’s life support systems.
If you stand and look towards the dreadnought when the opening cutscene ends, you can see pelicans flying towards the city. None of them are heading quite in the same direction though, and appear to be targeting different parts of the city on all sides of the dreadnought. I think seeing banshees going toe-to-toe with pelicans all the way at the end of the mission is a bit much though. In Amber Clad was a frigate after all, one of the smallest classifications of ship in both fiction and in real life. I can't imagine it would hold so many pelicans that by the end of the mission you would still see them flying around. But that said, for the sake of including something like this - I think banshees and phantoms dogfighting each other at the end would work better. Are they still Loyalists and Separatists duking it out? Or has the Flood gotten their hands on these Covenant ships, forcing the Loyalists and Separatists to work together again against a common enemy? Or has it escalated into an even more chaotic free-for all? You wouldn't be able to tell, and most of them probably wouldn't either.
Even though its extra content… i still feel like the OG is still much more badass. A hog run feels kind of anticlimactic for the middle installment of the trilogy. Maybe if done better it would have been cooler. But for the chief to throw himself on that beam of energy shooting himself into the forerunner ship and slide landing in it was dope as fuck
To me, it always felt the other way around, the run was the one thing this mission was missing, a good way to end Chief's Campaign in Halo 2 before moving onto the final mission with Arby.
As cool as the concept is, it's missing 5 of the things that made the original warthog run so epic: 1. The countdown on the corner of the screen. So you *know* you have to make it to the end before a certain time. 2. Random explosions going off that could slow, or even kill you if you aren't careful. 3. The fakeout rescue/Foehammer death scene. 4. There's the "gap in the trench" that you have to jump at top-speed. Even when you make it, the game tries to trick you into thinking you missed the jump. 5. Right at the end, you have to ditch the warthog and make the last leg of the run on foot. I'm not saying the exact same formula would have needed to be applied again, but it all made the original experience unforgettable. That said, the countdown, the explosions, a similar top-speed jump, and a final stretch on foot could have been made to work. At the end of the day though, the game was plenty of fun without a warthog run.
As cool as this seems, I can see why it was cut, aside from saving time. It is just a straight line, vehicles don't make sense for the level (taking place both on a tower and the rest of the level being so close-quarters), and there's fears that Bungie would be repeating themselves. That said, it would have been cool to have a dedicated warthog run level through the streets of High-Charity on the way to the ship. Would have been cool to see actual living areas you know?
I agree, but knowing this was built into the game code still, suggest this was left in on accident but doesn't confirm this was a fully flushed out idea. Maybe this was a proof of concept that's data snuck into the final build after they cut and rebuilt the game from scratch after E3. The idea of seeing the entire city is a very rad concept. We'll never know for sure, but I do know that this is a killer part of video history!
@@silentwillgames Oh yeah totally. I love learning about cut content, but also seeing why it was cut. Like, my GF is a massive LOTR fan and made me watch the extended editions and was surprised that aside from Two Towers, I preferred the theatrical cuts. @@grahamhill676the space elevator fell later on a couple of hours after Regret left Earth. We see it ourselves in the nearby Uplift Nature Reserve in ODST. Sure, Bungie may not have thought of that when Halo 2 was made but still.
It will be cool to see what Ruby does with this in his mod. I hope he restores those big spinning things that were in the original H2 Warthog run mod. One thing I’m most excited for with his mod is having enemy humans as the Arbiter. The lack of human enemies is perhaps one of Halo’s biggest missed opportunities. It would’ve added some much needed enemy variety to his repetitive sections, since they radically alter the way the game is played it would’ve been a great way to make Halo 2 more dualistic by showing you what it’s like to fight on the other side of the Human Covenant War, and it would’ve made the eventual human Elite alliance feel far more shaky and like one of desperation. One thing I like about the previous version of Ruby’s mod is how the guy had Sentinels and humans fighting together, which would’ve been a good way to for foreshadow the human Forerunner connection. I’m assuming since in one of his streams he said the entirety of the Covenant are going to be throwing everything they have to get the Index he’ll also add allied Brutes. That’s another thing that would’ve enhanced Halo. If the Brutes were actively involved in various operations it would’ve done wonders to making them feel like a proper member of the Covenant, as opposed to just kind of being there until the plot needed them to be enemies. It would’ve been a great way to show the player what those things are capable of before they turn on you. And if we got to see Brutes and Elites fighting and dying alongside each other it would’ve made their eventual betrayal so much more impactful. It’s a shame that Bungie didn’t give us either of those. Thankfully, mods can fix that.
I don't really think having human enemies would radically change the way the game is played, and saying as much feels a bit... like overexaggerating? Marines just don't really have much mobility and always came across to me as if they were designed to die off quickly. Having such bumbling enemies with no specialties (no shields, no point defense, no health buff, etc.) would be no more different than plopping a handful of grunts in a level. So other than swapping out a Flood room with much easier to kill Marines, the difference that will make is just... well, it doesn't sound astronomical. I guess you could make some "variants"? Like, give ODSTs more health...? But if you do something like that, it just comes across as copying already existing enemy types. Eventually you go from "Oh hey SICK! Fightable ODSTs!!!" to viewing them as just "Oh okay ODSTs are just the Brutes of the UNSC", in other words, no more than a simple model swap. If you want a taste of human enemies, just plop yourself into any Halo game and get the Marines to turn on you. I'm sure most people will find that type of combat highly unsatisfying. They're just too easy to kill. It's probably for the best that we never got human enemies.
Originally supposed to have a Warthog run at the end here. Now it makes sense with the chapter title of "Once More, with feelings" In a way to basically do the same thing they did in Halo 1, but this time with conviction to stop the destruction of all life. As opposed to Halo 1's version of they did it. Now just need to bail out. But then again. I doubt it wouldve been very good execution with Xbox at the time. Halo 1 Xbox warthog run was alr a good execution but it really pushed the engine to performance issue and capped by hardware unlike Halo 1 PC where ppl modded the engine to its fullest Them waiting on Halo 3 and with Xbox 360 was a good decision there. Albeit due to time crunch and huge ambition that caused the circumstances to drop few levels and the run, id say it was a well worth trade off. Although there are bits of story elements of the cut levels that wouldve been cool to make it in story wise, gameplay wise...probably not so great
Seems kind of lackluster tbh. In the Halo CE Warthog Run, you're racing against the clock while navigating the obstacle-laden corridors of the Autumn. In the Halo 3 Warthog run, you have to deal with the fact that the unfinished Halo is disintegrating all around you, resulting in sections of the path falling away and possibly sending you careening to your death.
