I own the 212 and I think it is a great amp at a reasonable price. Probably a bit heavy compared to this 112, though. The Baxandall system makes it quite versatile; I read somewhere something about it having a technical configuration of some sort regarding the middle tones, but although I might be wrong, I do not think it really boost mids as such as it says in the video, but rather, the main particularity of the Baxandall eq is that it isolates the bands for bass, trebble and mids, unlike most other amps that do not fully separate them, so the tweaking of each knob does not interfere with the other ones' frecuencies, thus allowing you to extract more various and precise tones. The "clean" channel is really good, but the "dirty" one is even better with a great gain that can feel both classic and modern. The spring reverb is good, albeit a bit abrupt after a certain point. The 25/50 watts toggle comes in handy, but I find there is a slight variation in tone apart from the obvious difference in volume, but it might be due to the subjective "hearability" of certain frecuencies at different decibels. Overall a great and quite poeerful combo with quality sound, that sets you apart from the more common and obvious brands of choice, and also with good looks, I think, which is always a plus.
Same power yields same volume (that's basic physics although psychologically it seems like 2x12s should be louder that's not reality) and breakup point depends on the driver selection. Tighter bass also depends on the driver choice, and cabinet design, basically more cabinet = more bottom but jamming 2 drivers in the same size cabinet actually reduces the low end. 2x12 is heavier and bigger and more of a hassle for a gigging musician, I like my twin but rarely take it to gigs. Personal pref...
Great Clean Channel. Drive channel is fine for blues and classic rock. Nice to see tone controls that actually do something when they are adjusted and a boost that actually raises the volume rather than the gain too. If you don't play metal, then this is good alternative to the ubiquitous Fender HRDs, Blackstar HT40/60s, various Marshalls etc. Whether you can find a decent store that stocks them in the UK is another matter altogether though!
Tighter bass frequencies due to the extra speaker, and louder which gives you more clean headroom before it breaks up into slight grit. And volume is handy when I certain venue warrents it ;)
Dear Guitar World, I tend to agree with some that a more "mainstream" guitar should have been used....maybe a strat and LP divided out. However, to some who complained that it was just "solos" and no chords....did you even listen to the entire demo? I saw and heard plenty of chords....probably 50/50 with lead. Good demo, tweaking the knobs to give us a good sample of tone, and explanation. The cleans from this amp are gorgeous!
Great sounding amp, the 212 is a better long term investment than the 112 if you are a gigging musician. I prefer this amp over all the modern Marshall amps available, Had my 212 combo for 3 months now and dig it alot.
The Ampeg Gemini I's & II's from the 60's are the source of the most angelic, clean bell tones I've ever heard come out of a guitar amplifier still to this day. Everett Hull was a damn genius amp builder. While this doesn't quite capture the sound from those hand-wired, American made beauties Ampeg created in the 60's and 70's, it's still a damn fine guitar amp company to this day.
This guy def does some of the best demos on youtube. I agree that it would be nice if he swapped single coils & humbuckers, but at least he mixes rhythm and lead playing. Maybe a split screen that had a close up of the knobs so you could see the adjustments hes making would be cool. Looks like a great amp.
Nice Classic rock tones. Very Tasty. It's also nice to see they no longer have that cheesy Headbanger's Ball type set. Just a plain white background, nice and simple.
I get that people don't like that he doesn't play the same guitar as he/she does, but you can't please everyone. People with PRS-guitars are happy now and others with humbucker-guitars are slightly happy as well, but if he played another guitar, it could be all the way around. Best thing to know how an amplifier sounds eventually is to play it yourself. :)
I prefer to use a 1x12 due to the smaller, more portable size plus I carry my own p.a. so I can just turn it up in the house. That way my guitar doesn't walk all over the vocals. Just curious what your reasoning was. Thanks.
@Ekis86 im sure they have a max time they want the review to be but....come on us guys who are looking to buy another amp we dont need really think that longer review means better review, so ya plug a damn strat and prs in!!!!
How about using a standard Strat and LP for the demo so we can tell what is amp and what's the guitar. "During the 70s they were prevalent" - what about the 60s, google: What is the Manhattan Guitar Club?
Shouldn't really be using a NF3. It's too unique sounding. They should do all the reviews using either 'Strat' types or 'LP' types seeing as how they are the two most familiar guitar sounds. On the other hand that would be boring as SHIT XD!!!!
Nice guitar, that (relatively) nobody owns. Why not just play reviews with a Les Paul standard or standard Stratocaster so we can get a feel for how things sound. Since most guitarists are very very familiar with how both of those guitar sounds in relation to their own?
Too many notes, can't hear the amp. Kinda useless as an amp demo video. Hint, let a note ring. Show off the amp & the tone, not your "speed" or whatever you call it.
Why do you use that horrible guitar? This is a famous amp for crunchy tone and rock and roll like The Faces and Rolling Stones.... Bad choice, bad review
I don't like the sound of the guitar he uses. Bad choice for an amp demo, should have been Les Paul or Tele or something else that people know the sound of so they could then hear the amp.
I've had one for over a year. Absolutely a great amp.

man how cool would it be to review all sorts of guitars and amps for a living
Tighter bass frequencies due to the extra speaker, and louder which gives you more clean headroom before it breaks up into slight grit. And volume is handy when I certain venue warrents it ;)

The boost world with both channels. Very good
Nice review, & thanks for the demo. Heading off to try one later today.
some nice playing there
Great amp. Great guitar. Great tone. Great review. Great player. Peace.
@Ekis86 I agree. A PRS with mini-humbuckers is hardly representative of what the majority play.
Nice Classic rock tones. Very Tasty. It's also nice to see they no longer have that cheesy Headbanger's Ball type set. Just a plain white background, nice and simple.
I got the 212 for more volume! amazing tone that is unique to ampeg
@chickenshyt490 Its the settings those guitars are outstanding. -PK
always good reviews with good info !
?????
So paul youre great player

I wish they would do the reviews with both single coil and humbucker guitars.
Are these amps now discontinued??
I've got an ampeg vl-502 it sounds fucking amazing
Ben Dover me too I love that head! I've also got a ampeg vh-140c 212 combo as well! Also a killer amp
love the clean very good for rock n roll or blues kidna thing not the greatest metal amp but defiantly a great amp for clean and slight OD styles
I prefer to use a 1x12 due to the smaller, more portable size plus I carry my own p.a. so I can just turn it up in the house. That way my guitar doesn't walk all over the vocals. Just curious what your reasoning was. Thanks.
Why exactly do you think that the 2x12 is a better long term investment?
Lets review this amp........with a guitar no one owns or has played. I used to like these vids.
nice amp
How many loud is dis?
@ArielsSmartyPants theres already quite a few videos of him using the same Epi LP custom to demo pedals and amps
What guitar is that?
No pedals???
Or? 4minutes and 45 sec ca, you can hear the pedal boosting in
Or,,??
@Ekis86 im sure they have a max time they want the review to be but....come on us guys who are looking to buy another amp we dont need really think that longer review means better review, so ya plug a damn strat and prs in!!!!
Very Rush-like
How about using a standard Strat and LP for the demo so we can tell what is amp and what's the guitar.
"During the 70s they were prevalent" - what about the 60s, google: What is the Manhattan Guitar Club?
4:19 the gain is at 3 / 4:29 the gain is at 6 / 4:39 the gain is at 11. derp!!!
"Does your guitar hurt when you dump mud?"
@TheExopolitics It sound better with a lot of gain ! :)
All of amps, guitar is great, ?
@ArielsSmartyPants A lot of the times he plays an Epiphone Les Paul.
PALM MUTE! Need to hear if it can chug. Otherwise it looks good.
@Ekis86 Not everyone is PGS ;)
what kind of guitar does he have?
Paul Reed Smith PRS.
Prequel to the Silver Sky.
WTF?! That guy can and will make everything sound thin and bullshitty with treble at 10 at dimed gain. Come oooon, do it right, or don't do it at all!
Chords !! please Tele's Please Strats,
@MrBeatlesfreak72 Paul Reed Smith NF3
Shouldn't really be using a NF3. It's too unique sounding. They should do all the reviews using either 'Strat' types or 'LP' types seeing as how they are the two most familiar guitar sounds. On the other hand that would be boring as SHIT XD!!!!
I love this amp , take out the celetian 7080 and put in a canibis rex
Nice guitar, that (relatively) nobody owns. Why not just play reviews with a Les Paul standard or standard Stratocaster so we can get a feel for how things sound. Since most guitarists are very very familiar with how both of those guitar sounds in relation to their own?
Hate the driven sound......
mmm. gain always at 11.
Too many notes, can't hear the amp. Kinda useless as an amp demo video. Hint, let a note ring. Show off the amp & the tone, not your "speed" or whatever you call it.
someone buy GuitarWorld a new microphone. Their distorted tones always sound like shit? Why don't they learn!!!
Prs nice guitar butt big shit sound...not feeling
shit.
Why do you use that horrible guitar?
This is a famous amp for crunchy tone and rock and roll like The Faces and Rolling Stones....
Bad choice, bad review
