+joseph robinson haven't you read his sonnets? He didn't believe in the over the top declarations of love that were popular during that period, he was taking the piss out of exaggerated love stories.
+abookutopia Romeo and Juliet was actually intended to be a tragedy not a love story. Thats why they die at the end. But its a common missconseption. i didnt know until about 2 years ago
yeah but couldn't shakespeare have them talk for a little to get to know each other before they got married! Besides i don't believe in love at first sight which is something that happened WAAAY to fast.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR RANT ABOUT FIFTY SHADES OF GREY I mean I know some people like eroticas but this was just sexist and it advocated so many sexist, wrong things and just bleh but yes THANK YOU for that
Romeo and Juliet isn't a novel, it's a play. Shakespeare didn't write the play in order for it to be a realistic representation of love but, like his other works, is a thematic representation of numerous different conflicts within life. It actually serves as a moral critique on the pitfalls of love. I understand and accept personal opinions but if you are going to criticise a work of literature you need to have informed opinions and actually understand what the purpose of the text is.
Romeo and Juliet is a play , not a novel and its also not a romance , its a tradgic drama , so that is the point (sorry for any spelling mistakes i am portuguese )
OMI GOD!! Everyone in the comments, stop hating on Sasha about Romeo and Juliet! It's her personal opinion! Sure she said that it was a novel but you don't have to keep correcting her that it was a play and it had a good meaning and blah blah blah!! There is NO freaking point to arguing with her! She said at the very beginning of her video that she was sorry if she was hating on your favorite books and to please not take it offensively!! So listen to her! It doesn't affect your life that she honestly doesn't like Romeo and Juliet!!! Okay, rant over. Sasha, don't listen to the haters because you are a fantastic and wonderful person and you are my favorite booktuber of all time! You have influenced me so much and I love you for that. So people that absolutely LOOOOVVVEE the stupid story of Romeo and Juliet, shut up and stop hating on Sasha! GEEZ!!!!
No one is hating on Sasha by correcting her, though? It is a fact that Romeo and Juliet is a play and definetly not a novel, and I think one has to understand what they are reading in order to be able to critizise it. It's okay of you don't like it, as long as you know where it comes from. NOW. That doesn't mean we're hating on her by any means.
OMG finally found someone who hates Fifty Shades of Grey, like seriously i got so disgusted and felt like staying single for a long time haha ... no kidding :/
I know this video was made awhile ago, but I have to say something. Okay- Romeo and Juliet can be seen as a stupid, unrealistic love story, but it's not seen that way when you remember the main antagonist- FATE! Fate is doing this to them because it is trying to stop the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, and preventing the total inhalation of each other if it continued. It's a sappy love story that inspired the many of the books of today, and many on your shelf! It was also written to warn people to not do something be like the families or fall in love in a day, because something horrible would happen. Shakespeare's works teach a lessons to everyone, and it can be seen as revolutionary because many authors would not take the risk of killing a main character, let alone the protagonists. I can't see it as overhyped because without it, the books in your shelves would not be there. It's a piece of foundation for art. I just really felt the need to say that, even after 2 years.
+SHUBHANGI NEGI I'm not saying every romance or novel ever written wouldn't exist without it, but you can see many aspects of it in literature. I was just trying to say Romeo and Juliet inspired and brought things to many works of art. (though I did slip up and say every book). But I could also argue that Shakespeare has shaped more art forms from all of his works. But I was more focusing on the fact that they fell in love in a day because the antagonist, fate, was trying to fix/help the situation of the Capulets and Montagues.
Almost every romance book has an aspect of forbidden love. So yeah it did shape it. Although, Romeo and Juliet wasn't an original idea; there were books with the same plot before Shakespeare wrote it, and it is in fact based off the true story of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.
Breanna May Yeah totally. I just think the written and acted arts community knows of Shakespeare more than the others inspired by Cleopatra and Mark Anthony and even the two themselves. It's just more about perspective and what type of research for that backstory.
We should gather a whole lot of people who hate FSOG (like me) and start a huge bonfire just of those books and do it in front of people who love the book or who loves the movie
+SuperAmazingTaylor i dont like FSOG either but doing that is just disrespectful to the people who liked the book ( all three of them). im not trying to be rude but just think before you post.
Romeo & Juliet may not be a novel, but people seem to forget that we read most Shakespeare like books. It's gotten to a point now where it's more studied and read than it is performed. So, I think it counts.
I DON'T CAREHOW MUCH YOU HATE THE BOOK! EVEN THOUGH IVE NEVER READ IT AND WHAT YOU'VE SAID IS PRETTY CONVINCING! YOU DO NOT BURN A BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think that Romeo and Juliette was really a classic because it was that good of a book or that realistic. I think it's a classic because he was the first person to really write about forbidden love. That's the gist of a lot of books and movies and I think it's just that he was the first to come up with that idea of "forbidden love" which impacted literature immensely.
I saw the movie first... It was very well played out. It actually inspired me to get the book and I'm disappointed to hear that there are mixed feelings about it! I haven't read it yet tho...
No, not Romeo and Juliet ... I mean okay it's not realistic but it's not supposed to be...But I agree with a bunch of the other books you sacrificed. ^_^
Agreed with all, but Romeo and Juliet. I think William's intention wasn't to make it realistic or something... and I love that they both dei at the end, like, its not like other stories, that makes it interesting. Plus, it's not a novel, and you have to take in to account the year it was made in, and the author. Buttt anyway hehe
yeah... you have completely misunderstood the point of Romeo and Juliet. It's not a novel, it's a play. It's not a love story it's a cautionary tale about obsession and how it can be blown out of proportion in situations where people are too stubborn and stupid to let stuff go (the family feuds)
Romeo and Juliet was written in a completely different time period when girls didn't really hang out with boys like today. Also there was no social media and stuff to entertain and teach teenagers about life so they weren't as savvy as they are today, and much more likely to believe that a simple crush was true love. So I think it's entirely plausible that a cloistered teenage girl from that time believes herself to be in love with a guy she just met who happens to not only be handsome, but who also seems to share her feelings. And precisely because they didn't spend that much time with each other they didn't really get to know each others flaws. Also they were going against their parents wishes which can sometimes be a motivator for a teenager to go to extremes and which explains the urgency in their actions. Yeah, they were immature and stupid to do it, but I think the play does a good job portraying the tragedy of it. You also stated 'what's the point if they die in the end?', the point is that their families realized that their hate for each other was destroying their loved ones and that they had to stop feuding. Shakespeare was all about life lessons in his plays, he was making a point, also it's a TRAGEDY hence the over the top tragic events. Finally, it's a play not a book, so you can't expect to get the same sort of character development from it as you would in a book.
+Nicole Foster Check your facts, lady, it's most definitely a tragedy and NOT a satire! Candide is a satire, Don Quixote is a satire, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy.
Angie Lara It's a satire of teenage love? That's why he gives them no time to discuss anything and why it's so rushed. It's meant to satirize love stories.
I haven't read 50 shares but tbh the author was smart to write about something that is so controversial. So many powerful woman have spoken up since the book has been spoken about so often.
I personally think the worst two series in the world are delirium and twilight. Both Lena and Bella have so much potential to grow, but they whole time they where whiny bitches who depend on a boy for everything. Plus I absolutely hate love triangles. Which both of the series where based on ( at least part of them )
I absolutely agree! I haven't even read Twilight and I have no plans whatsoever on reading the series. And about the Delirium trilogy, ugh. I don't understand myself. I have finished the first book and now I'm on to Pandemonium but srsly, I didn't felt like it was worth the read. I've always hated love triangles.
I would say the exact same thing about 50 Shades of Grey and Romeo & Juliet. I felt like telling R&J to slow down! Those teen hormones are out of control!!! Great tag video!
And this is why Allegiant is such a terrible book... Tris and four fought for nearly 3 books to finally have there own world that they wanted and Tris dies in the end. seriously what was the point to all of it?
I love Shakespeare, but I don't like Romeo and Juliet. I appreciate it for the commentary it makes on hatred and holding grudges, but the romance...yeesh.
Jessica Anthony A 16-year-old person who's nearly an adult usually know better than killing themselves for their dead lover. I love that story but the logic is just...
The play was written in 1597. At this time in history, it was extremely common for women to be married off from the ages of 10 onwards, and therefore this story is entirely logical and fitting for its time period. It really really annoys me that people that supposedly like reading these days cannot understand the cultural significance and backdrop of the text. Only now, in this day and age, would such a story be odd... not for shakespeare who lived in the 16th century!
Hannahjqd You can't really reduce the events of the play to 'killing themselves for their dead lover'; Romeo was banished, plagued with guilt over Tybalt's death. Had he been found, he would have been killed anyway, probably. Juliet was being forced into marriage and the people around her turned on her. It was more complex than than the 'joint suicide for love'.
I didn't really like Romeo and Juliet too but it's a play and Shakespeare didn't create this play to be realistic! If you take the time into consideration then this was a common thing where 13 year olds get married and fall in love.
Just have to say: Romeo and Juliet is a play, not a novel, as you kept saying. It was originally written for the shakespeareian audience, and as a performance would have more aspects to it than just the reading. Juuuust saying.
A lot of people argue that Romeo and Juliet was so silly because it was a satire and that Shakespeare was kind of poking fun at the characters and the concept of love. :P
I know what you mean about Romeo and Juliet but I think you've got to look more at the historical context. It was written in the 1500's and people there lived up to (max) 40s/50s so they tended to marry young (boys 14, girls 12) and marry fast as possible. I also think that the fact that it's a play and not a novel excuses it and I think that there wouldn't have really been character development in 3 days but idk. I'm not really defending it cos I didn't enjoy it but I think people never take into consideration the background of R&J
Don't worry I agree with you when it came to Crossed. The book was so repetitive. Yes I get she was trying to find him! But when she did I expected a big Kyssia moment ya know? Like omg I just love there love story in Matched especially the end when he was taken, that part was heartbreaking, but in a good way. But Crossed was all "I am going to find you. Yay....." It was so boring. But I finished it anyway. Hoping that more interesting things might happen. But...yah know.... I read Reached and it wasn't as bad as Crossed, but it is the typical dystopian, revolution, third book thing. You get me? Everything was so expected. Plus there wasn't much Kyssia in Reached. ~ Sorry if I used the comments to rant about Crossed...
I'm assuming everyone's interpretation is going to be different, but when I was taught Romeo and Juliet in highschool we were told it is not actually a love story but instead it is a cautionary tale. The message of the story (at least what we were taught) is do not rush your actions and take your time when making decisions. You are supposed to feel that their relationship is underdeveloped. You are supposed to think that their relationship is rushed. Romeo and Juliet got married too quickly which lead to them having to keep their relationship a secret from their families which caused conflict. Juliet's father was too impatient in getting Juliet to marry Paris which lead to Juliet faking her death (another rushed decision). In reaction to Juliet's death, Romeo decided to kill himself. If he would have just waited a little while longer (key word is 'waited') Juliet would have awoken and told him that she was not dead. Also if Juliet was not so quick to kill herself after Romeo's death her family may have been able to intervene and less people would have died. Romeo and Juliet in my opinion is a pretty interesting story so long as you don't read it as a love story.
Romeo & Juliet is a play written in shakesperian time that was the norm and its written like that because most plays only show short time spans like thaat mamma mia was a timspan of 2 days
i never heard you talk about eragon... if you haven't read eragon YOU HAVE TO READ IT its one of the most interesting amazing fantasy book ever! i read the whole series in a week... yeah i'm obsessed so good
+daniela cohen oh my gosh, tell me about it! Some people hate it, but I love it. I am finishing the first book and am obviously gonna read the other ones too.
i really agree with you about the 2nd book in a series not being the best i feel its just there to know all the important stuff for the 3rd book and then a stupid story in between it takes me so much more time to read than any of the other books
I love your videos!! I agree with everything (especially Fifty shades) but its worth pointing out that Romeo and Juliet was a play- probs why development was lacking
I've never heard you swear so much! I was like, yeah tell it girl! Haha! Setting the book on fire was my favorite part. I've so wanted to do that. I haven't read Crossed, just Matched but everyone's reviews about it makes me nervous. I won't even read 50 shades. My friend recommended these UA-cam videos, called Emily reads 50 shades, where she's semi reading it but mostly making fun of it. It's the best way to get through it, she's hilarious
I love how they're releasing the 50 Shades of grey movie on Valentine's Day 2015. Cause when I think romantic movies, I think FIFTY FREAKING SHADES OF GREY :P
I totally agree with you about fifty shades of grey and Romeo and Juliet (I hated having to study that in school!) haven't heard of the other 2 but I'm sure I'd agree you on those too
Romeo and Juliet is a comedy, just putting it out there. At least, it was originally meant to be. Its not meant to be taken seriously, and frankly, I don't understand why teachers don't mention this enough when teaching it. I didn't enjoy it, truly, but people have to consider what it was trying to accomplish.
Romeo and Juliet is a satirical tragic play. It's purpose was to make fun of "insta-love" and the sheer impressionability of lust on teenagers. And they don't end up dead for a shock-factor plot-twist, but because they were selfish and thoughtless. Not liking the message of the story is one thing, but neglecting the message entirely is another.
digiterrible Sorry, but you're also incorrect. The point of R&J isn't to condemn the kids for their lust - they are just acting like kids, after all! The point of the story isn't the romance or that they die in the end - it's supposed to show the effect that these dueling families have on innocent children who have no part in this war! Romeo and Juliet could be considered selfish and thoughtless, but isn't it so much more selfish and thoughtless of the Capulets and Montagues to involve their children in a pointless feud that results in the deaths of four young people? "All are punished" says the prince at the end. He's saying that this battle is stupid and if the Capulets and Montagues had been able to let things go, Romeo and Juliet, plus Tybalt and Mercutio, would still be alive!
Well Romeo and Juliet was meant to be seen as a play during the 1500s which is meant to be fast-pacedand appeal a different audience from a different time period so...
agree with some of your choices but i think your opinion in romeo and Juliet...i mean yeah nowadays is not like that and people is used to other kind of love, but Shakespeare wrote it in the Victorian time xD when a play like that was amazing and passionate and fun. Sure now is not like that and seem like is fake and no reliable at all, but criticize it is pointless.
Thank you for saying that about 50 shades of gray I have never read them and dont intend to for the very reason you said it belittles women .dang I wanted to read crossed too ..
I have such a love/hate relationship with the 50 shades series. I know they're sexist and Christian Grey is a weirdo but they're my all time favourite guilty pleasures. I can't help it and I'm ashamed. 😂😂😂
I totally agree with you about Crossed bc Matched was an amazing novel, and crossed didn't live up to its potential. And your fourth scenario was actually a movie I watched in my science class!
you started to burn a book. She started to burn a book. GUYS, BOOKS WERE ALMOST BURNED. That's some serious book hatred right there.
As soon as you threw FSOG across the room, I started hugging my laptop.

You have to remember Romeo and Juliet was never supposed to be a book, just a play...
Doesn't make the story any less dumb.
+joseph robinson um... England back in the day was all about death? It was the craze...
+joseph robinson It was supposed to be dumb. It's a parody of romance
Reegan Kay No it is not. It was a serious play, Shakespeare doesn't do parody

Your right but its a play not a book so he needs to have the story move along faster then if it was a book.
+Nathalie Bisono The whole play is a satire. Hence him not giving them time "to get to know each other". It's not actually about their love.
Not to mention a political commentary. Shakespeare's works are filled with warnings.
***** So? Read it. Grow your mind. Just because Sasha did not understand the play does not mean you shouldn't try and understand it.

There are book versions of it though where its been re-written

I totally agree!
it's a classic, people didn't expect much back then
me too!
+rockstar13studios It's satire.
With all due respect, I don't think this girl understood what she was reading. For starters, Romeo and Juliet is not even a novel, it's a play.
Ha. For Romeo and Juliet you forgot the fact that they were both like twelve...
Romeo is 16 Juliet is 13.
well you know what I mean... ridiculously young for stuff like that
Jessica Anthony A 16-year-old person who's nearly an adult usually know better than killing themselves for their dead lover.
I feel like the only person in the world who liked the matched series
Nope I thought it was really good
Sharon Helms Haley Rhumm Same here but Crossed wasn't as good as Matched and Reached for me!
I liked it but it was so slow-going
No I loved the trilogy but crossed was very slow. Matched and Reached are better
I liked matched and reached, but crossed was too slow moving
"That's lust honey, that's lust." 😂 Oh my goodness- I'm dead.
Just have to say:
Romeo and Juliet is a play, not a novel, as you kept saying.
It was originally written for the shakespeareian audience, and as a performance would have more aspects to it than just the reading.
Juuuust saying.
Well they have made it into a book and I think in modern day writing now just saaaying XD (no hate)
jastrut ahahaha fair enough fair enough. But I think she had a copy in the original style so that's why I said it :-)
This was great! I loved your energy and opinions. Thanks for sharing =)
Totally agreed with your opinion of Crossed!!!! I did the exact same thing.
that is pure hatred right there. I've never seen someone burn a book which cost our blood, sweat, and tears to buy: (poor people problems)
Hahaha gosh I just love your energy :D You're so honest and I love that. Great tag
The Death Cure. After all I'd been through with The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials....ugh the ending was such a let down.
+India Moore i hate that book so much
I agree! For everything.
I COMPLETELY agree with you Sasha... with every book!
Romeo and Juliet was written 500 years ago, so you can't quite compare it with modern novels
Why do i love this girl so much?!
~
Sorry if I used the comments to rant about Crossed...
I love that you're sooo honest
I literally thought of crossed just before you said it, I totally agree with you
I completely agree with you for every book or series you said you didn't really care about, ESPECIALLY 50 shades😫
I agreed so much when you were talking about Crossed, it took so much in me too keep reading it
omg you actually burning that book at the end was so funny I actually laughed out loud.
OMG SHE BURNED IT YOU GO GIRL
3:09 THANK YOU!! Finally someone understands!!! Reached isn't any better..
1. The Fault In Our Stars 2. The Eye of minds 3. Pride And Prejudice (or any Jane Austin book) or Little Women 4. (And again) The Fault In Our Stars
For Matched, I agree. The first book is the best but I actually ended up really enjoying the last book Reached as well.
Romeo & Juliet is a play written in shakesperian time that was the norm and its written like that because most plays only show short time spans like thaat mamma mia was a timspan of 2 days
Oh my goodness!!! Sasha you are amazing!! Loved this video!!☺️💗☺️💗
i never heard you talk about eragon...
if you haven't read eragon YOU HAVE TO READ IT its one of the most interesting amazing fantasy book ever!
i read the whole series in a week... yeah i'm obsessed so good
+daniela cohen oh my gosh, tell me about it! Some people hate it, but I love it. I am finishing the first book and am obviously gonna read the other ones too.
Instant thumbs up for shading 50 Shades of Grey
I feel like I'm the only person who loves Romeo & Juliet
I love everything Shakespeare has written :D
i really agree with you about the 2nd book in a series not being the best
i feel its just there to know all the important stuff for the 3rd book and then a stupid story in between
it takes me so much more time to read than any of the other books
I love your videos!! I agree with everything (especially Fifty shades) but its worth pointing out that Romeo and Juliet was a play- probs why development was lacking
I absolutely love this tag! It's so fun to watch it
Completely agree with you about Crossed and Heart Beat.
The Matched series disappointed me tremendously :(
I completely agree with Fifty Shades of Grey and Crossed. Didn't even bother finishing them.
100% agree about Fifty Shades of Grey. I would throw that to the zombies without a thought.
I love what you said about 50 Shades of Grey!
oh i love romeo and juliet, shakespeare wrote it as a satire of young love
1) Twilight
2) Insurgent
3) To Kill a Mockingbird
4) The Kill Order
I totally agree with you about fifty shades of grey and Romeo and Juliet (I hated having to study that in school!) haven't heard of the other 2 but I'm sure I'd agree you on those too
Romeo and Juliet is a comedy, just putting it out there. At least, it was originally meant to be. Its not meant to be taken seriously, and frankly, I don't understand why teachers don't mention this enough when teaching it. I didn't enjoy it, truly, but people have to consider what it was trying to accomplish.
I can't believe you've pick Romeo and Juliet! I did enjoy that book hahahaha 100% agree with the others :)
Romeo and Juliet was written as a play and the play can only last a few hours so they had to make the story with a certain time period
You are hilarious. Lol
I loved the Fifty Shades Of Grey Trilogy..
LOL Shakespeare was the tudor times mister
sookierory haha wtf?
You're literally my favorite person.
Isn't Romeo and Juliet a play and not a novel?
bruh there both a novel and play, we all book readers know that.👌🏻
It's a play. There are novel adaptions, but Shakespeare only ever wrote it as a play.
Romeo and Juliet's a play
Thank you for saying that about 50 shades of gray I have never read them and dont intend to for the very reason you said it belittles women .dang I wanted to read crossed too ..
William Shakespeare R&J = Stupid plot? (raises eyebrow). Jesus, that hurt my soul.
OMG I agree. This is a classic story (but it's also not a book ahaha it's a play)
Romeo and Juliet is a play, not a novel, but I agree with your argument.
Finally someone who shares my opinions on 50 Shades. I got through 4 chapters before I literally threw it across the room.
