  • A Brexit deal that threatens the union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland could lead to civil disorder by loyalists, the head of the Police Service of Northern Ireland has said.

Simon Byrne spoke to BBC Newsnight after Prime Minister Boris Johnson secured an agreement with the EU.
The proposed plan would see new checks on goods coming in to Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK.
The consequences were partly about identity and practicalities, he said.
Some unionists have concerns that the proposed Brexit plan, which essentially draws a new customs border in the Irish Sea, results in NI being treated differently than the UK's other regions

I really have no idea who is supposed to benefit from brexit. England's economy will take a big hit, eu will take an economic hit too but to a lesser extent. The English want to leave the eu, but they want the eu trade deals, no tariffs, free movement of services, products and they want to travel visa free to canary Islands or to France. Eu is mostly about these things, i have no idea why would they want to leave but also keep these things which are basically what the European union is. They want all the benefits, but they don't want to contribute financially, they want to travel to other eu countries but don't want other eu nationals to come to England, they want all the preferential tariffs and free trade, but they don't want to be in the eu single market so they can get all the benefits but if they feel like it they also want other rules and deals than everybody else. This leaving the eu thing is totally not actually about the factual benefits of leaving the eu, they are not willing to lose all the benefits and that's why they are extending the deadline. It's about "patriotism" and what the uk should stand for, not about trade or politics. People still want to feel as if England is this huge empire, they get everything they want and everybody is subservient to them. This is all about the emotions, because nobody actually knows what the eu does, some people think the eu is this evil organization which wants to destroy Europe and make every member lose its sovereignty. Eu is about having a common European trade policy, so we actually can compete with huge players like the us or China, none of our countries can compete by itself in the XXI century. Eu is about free trade and free movement, unifying countries with shared values. Also everyone in Ireland will be harmed by brexit, Northern Ireland and Ireland will not be as close as they are as of now, and when the border between the eu and the non eu country will be actually moved to the sea it will create a border between the uk countries. So both unionists and separatists will be unhappy, the situation will be worse for everybody. Kinda sad that people voted for this and during the height of the refugee crisis made such a drastic decision with only 52% voting to leave.

Loyalists, loyal to who. If those who live in the North wish to remain British, they should respect Britain and the democratic vote of the British people, all of the British people. The so called Irish Sea border is logical. We can’t have a land border because of the Good Friday agreement, apart from that we are basically the same people, except a few nuts on both sides.
If there is no border at all, what’s to stop EU goods coming into the UK without paying the due tariff, thereby enriching the EU to the cost of Britain.

The only reason there are so called British, Loyalists people in the north eastern part of the island of Ireland is because they were planted there in an undemocratic way. The native Irish had no choice but to accept this mass displacement of their people. Loyalists are a strange people- they are determined to maintain their Britishness but equally determined not to live in Britain! Everybody else has to dance to their tune, all the time. They are loyal to the queen but are seemingly aware that few on the mainland care about their overt displays of patriotism, and thus fear being sold out by the mainland British at any moment.
The GFA guarantees that NI will remain in the UK as long as the majority wants it, it introduced the consent principle and loyalist gunmen were released under that agreement, and are funded to go about their racketeering, drug dealing and other "community activities". Their paramilitary flags fly all year round, and they get to violate the law as much as they want round July to have their massive bonfires, parades and drink-fuelled displays.
They got a bribe to prop up the May administration and spoofed 500 million sterling on RHI payments that went mostly to Unionists.
They are endlessly indulged; if any of these things had been done by nationalists the calls to the Nolan Show would be lighting up all year long.
But I guess they have been endlessly indulged historically, so anything that brings about equality seems like a loss to them.

You know the DUP is in a power sharing government right now right? They have a say because they are the government in Westminster.
It still amazes me that as part of the good Friday agreement we released hundreds of violent criminals, murders, terrorists, bombers into the wild after serving next to no time in prison. What a deal

    • @TheLastAngryMan01
      @TheLastAngryMan01 4 роки тому

Bob Loblaw What powersharing arrangement? Stormont hasn’t sat in nearly three years at this point and the DUP campaigned against the GFA, and were in no hurry to resurrect it while the Confidence and Supply Agreement held. The DUP were externally supporting the Tories in government at Westminster but I wouldn’t categorize that as “power sharing”, especially now given that the DUP seems to have been thrown under the bus.
Personally, I’ve never agreed with the prisoner releases, but you can’t really suggest that CNRs have benefited it this exclusively, loyalist paramilitaries were also released under the GFA.
IMO everybody had to swallow some bitter pills under GFA but it has maintained a relative stability in a very unstable place.

  • @philipocarroll

The DUP have made an absolutely collossal mistake. They forced Westminster (and, by extension the rest of UK) to answer the question: When it comes down to brass tacks, do you really care whether NI is part of UK or not? Of course the answer they got is :"No, we support you in principle but in practice we don't care, please don't get violent. We'll just let outselves out by the backdoor."
This is devastating to Unionists, because although the answer is obvious in retrospect, up until now the Conservatives held the union as a core principle. They could point to Thatcher's rejection of the New Ireland Forum ("Out...out...out"). Now the fig leaf is gone and cannot be put back. They may care about the union of Scotland and England, but with NI? no, not so much. Unionists will have to resolve this contradiction. The country and crown they are loyal to, has no loyalty to them.
We have also seen a curious inversion of the usual logic, Labour and Lib Dem MPs suddenly crowing that "NI has been thrown under the bus". That's laughable for two reasons, firstly, majority of NI population are happy enough with this deal. Secondly, Corbyn et al are on record as being in favour of a United Ireland, so it's hypocrisy.
This fudge may square the Brexit circle but the way it came about (thanks DUP!) has greviously wounded Unionist identity. A people whose identity is under threat often react with violence.

If it wasn't for the flags and chants, few people would be able to tell our Northern Brothers apart.
Whatever their views, one group of fat middleaged skinheads or young men in tatty sportswear chucking bricks and starting fires, and screaming threats of violence and murder, are much like the other.
If you don't like something - go and Vote for whoever best reflects your views, and then leave them to democratically and peacefully represent you.
But the faces of the Loyalists - and Republicans, equally - who we see rioting just seem to LOVE the violence and mayhem, as well as having a free reign to attack the authorities, while the other 99+% of Loyalists (and Republicans) stay home, refusing to condone or support the violence.
It's all just a game up there, frankly. The politics have nothing to do with it - both sides just want to beat the other, often literally, mostly metaphorically. For shame...

These people have a lot to think about. “British” as an identity is ending. When Scotland secedes, and I believe they will, it will leave England and Wales. The Union Jack was almost certainly have to be retired. Who will then refer to themselves as British? The English will call themselves English and the Welsh will say they are Welsh. What needs to happen is the Unionists need a province in the north of Ireland for themselves, most likely counties Antrim and Down. Then they can be a semi autonomous province within a united ireland. They can call it Ulster.

There will be no trouble, first of all the loyalist this time will not have the backing of the British state so getting weapons to sustain an armed campaign will be impossible, but most importantly most people regardless of religion or nationality now just want to live in peace. A reunited Ireland has always been enivitable but it was the DUP and brexit who pushed it home.
