  • Hello! Welcome back - thank you for clicking the link and joining us virtually for another jewellery making tutorial video? Like we’ve shared before - YOU decide what these videos are to you. We just show up and share.
    Today’s video is a bit of a follow-up video on platinum, how to make a simple platinum ring. It’s got a brushed hammered finish with two polished edges or ‘side bands’.
    Are you thinking of getting into platinum work? It’s well worth it but you know I’m being biased. But actually… it is worth exploring for more reason than one. 😊
    If you are just starting your journey into goldsmithing, or if you’re established and looking to explore platinum work - this one is for YOU.
    Thank you for tuning in and supporting this channel! Can’t wait to share with you what we have for next week!

      They're coming! Thanks for the comment. We're also thinking about doing a course to be able to really delve into it and have all the right shots / planning behind it to have the biggest impact as there as mostly shot and recorded as things come into the workshop.

    Absolutely love this. I am a goldsmith as well who specializes in platinum. I find that the more people I listen to explaining what they do and what their experience is, the more I learn and the more I understand the metals as a whole. Keep making these videos! I love it!

    Lovely looking ring. I've avoided platinum due to the cost of the stuff! Probably have to re-mortgage the house to buy it. I wish sterling silver would fuse like that, it can be done but not as easily as that. I do a lot of textured stuff too, I just love the effect it gives. Great video as always.

      Cheers Paul - platinum is a bit pricey but cheaper than gold right now. Mind you with the interest rate right now, platinum is a way better investment 😂

    oh man i keep wanting to work with platinum soo badly, and you keep making content about it aaa! the idea of working with a torch that hot absolutely freaks me out, we use weaker ones that can only handle gold and silver. you mentioned that you bought the exact amount of metal that you needed for the piece. have you got any tips for how to estimate how much metal one would need for a project? gold or silver, for example. while silver is inexpensive enough to get extra and have leftovers, gold and platinum make it scarier, and estimating based on previously done pieces seems to meh.
    on another note, thank you so much for that signet video! i made my latest signet using your technique of mostly hammering the metal into shape, rather than filing it down to shape it, and i ended up with waay less leftovers, and the silver ended up packed down enough for me to be less scared while inlaying it with gold, woohoo! it's also super therapeutic to hammer shit :D

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  Рік тому

      Brilliant- I’m glad to hear that you tried the hammering thing. It’s so primal. I am trying to include the starting weights and lengths to my videos lately. I will be bringing it in as a standard in all my videos soon 👍🏻 that way you can see how much to buy. The best place to be is to buy a float of day 40 to 50 grams and just to top it up. But that’s another video all together 😂

    Good sir, I really like your videos, I don't miss them, I would like to know if you have ever prepared gray gold in 22k, the alloy of gold and iron and how it is prepared, regards 👍

      @@jacothejeweller I also work in jewelry, I was wondering why I read it for some time now in a book that has already deteriorated over time and from what I could understand more or less about the preparation, you have to liquefy the two metals each in separate crucibles and then mix, when each one is liquid, I don't do it either and I want to prepare it. I was asking if you could correct me on the information that I have, regards

    This video was incredible!!!! I have a question how would you go about adding a “frosted” look to a ring? The material would be sterling silver.

    • @jacothejeweller
      @jacothejeweller  Рік тому +1

      I would use a bead blaster for sure. I left mine in South Africa and still kicking myself over that. It’ll give you a finish on silver that looks like mother of pearl.

    Very helpful video - thanks! Can you list what you used to make the indented bars on the ends of the ring? I tried to make this in silver but I don’t think I used the right attachments. Was that a cutting disc you used after filing?

    I'm looking at the metal sales website and see that .999 platinum is less than half the price of gold and still less than 14k gold.
