It is extremely refreshing to see that other folks have "normal" looking living spaces. Like you, it does give me a huge sense of peace whenever things are organized. I fail more at this than I like. Life continues & we just do our best not to miss it as it happens My favorite part of this video is seeing you store up necessary things for long term/emergency situations. Not many in your age group recognize the importance of doing that. Of all the things needed in this life...wisdom is paramount. Well done, sweet sister 👏👏

Kelsey - use up your canned carrots by draining them and adding them to a blender with applesauce and ripe bananas to make fruit leathers. I like to add a vegetable to my fruit leathers and carrots or squash work well. My kids don't even notice.

What a job well done! It looks wonderful. Relief, huh?
I would put the less filled freeze dried jars in smaller jars. If you e got a 1/2 gallon jar a 1/3 full, I’d put into a pint jar with an OA and vac seal it. It’ll save space and stay “fresher”. I put my freeze dried stuff into the smallest jar that will work so the OA works better. Just a thought. 😊

Regarding your Harvest Right door and the streaks on it. Have you tried a brand new razor blade? I have a cleaning company and I use razor blades on those things all the time, of course use caution and be careful but usually that will take it off.

Have you tried freeze drying whole meals? For example, mac & cheese as you had some for a convenience. Someone I know will make 2 of a meal when cooking something that takes a while to prepare or cook and will freeze dry one in portions for a quick meal. Her husband likes peppers in his mac & cheese but her kids do not. She could freeze the leftovers for a future meal but it won't be a fast meal and they take up a lot of room in the freezer. She will freeze dry a portion and mark the outside of the mylar bag with how much boiling water to add along with what is inside. When her toddler is having a melt down and her daughter needs homework help while dad is working late she can grab mac & cheese for the kids and lasagna for herself and husband and dinner is both quick and easy and the ingredients are all of her own choosing. Have you tried acetone nail polish remover to remove whatever you wrote on your jar lid to reuse? Have you tried vinegar to clean the freeze dryer door? I think Becky at Acre Homestead used vinegar to clean hers when she went on vacation and came home to her freeze dryer covered in mold. YUCK!

My space looks the same way. But I have to replace my shelving. So it all has to be emptied, new shelving put in and refilled. So all of the things I have been doiing its just sitting all over the floor. It's been to warm to do it and I am so behind. I need to power wash our deck and stain first! Husband is 90 years old, and can't do it anymore. So i i's all falling on me.
It's very over whelming for sure.

I grew up in a home that used a coal furnace and to help with the coal dust on the canned goods we tacked up old sheets to the fronts and sides of the canning shelves and let them hang almost to the floor, overlapping the opening so we could easily access them and that helped. I grew up on a food stand farm, we canned everything, lol.

I’m pretty sure any home canner watching this video can relate to your comments about ‘shoving canned foods wherever you can find room, stacking them in corners, closets or shelves around the house’ in one way or another. The space turned out beautifully and how clever of you to repurpose the dvd shelves! I recently put our dvd’s and cd’s in books too and boy what a space saver. Our daughter came for a visit yesterday and she and my hubby harvested the potatoes while I worked on some other things in the garden. I’ve so enjoyed seeing the onions curing and now potatoes. How good to know you have food on the shelves to feed your family!
We purchased a used freeze dryer that we still do not have hooked up because I’m still not finished converting my home office into a pantry. It’s been a much larger job than I expected as we prepare other space to move the office into, plus garden, preserve food etc etc. Because I work in the home office, I have to maintain the ‘office’ for computer purposes so I can’t just empty it etc. It’s been so busy in the garden and trying to stay on top of the harvest etc., the new pantry space keeps getting less of my time 🤦‍♀️. Seeing your pantry filled with beautiful jars of food is a good encouragement for me to keep going. It will be a little longer though because my 83 yr old mom is having surgery to remove cancer from her lung on Monday. I will be with her (right where I want to be) for a week or so but will get back to business in the new pantry when I’m back home. My hubby and daughter who comes to help regularly will manage things in the garden while I’m gone. Thank you for your gentle sweet spirit and the joy you bring to your videos! You are a blessing 🤗

I love the tag idea. I bought chalk labels and am not sure how they will hold up when I have to wash.❤

How do you use your freeze-dry stuff in a normal routine?

    • @seedandsparrowhomestead
      @seedandsparrowhomestead  Рік тому

Well I guess I think of them the same way I think of any canned item or frozen ingredient, except I account for extra time needed to rehydrate or extra liquid needed in a recipe, like a soup for example if I’m just going to throw them in from the bag. I do reach for things preserved in ways that go from most shelf stable to least. Frozen first, then canned and finally freeze dried, unless of course I only used one method to preserve the food I’d like to use. Hope that answered your question! Blessings 🤍

I just started this project yesterday. I had also been putting it off for way too long. I have a good inventory list, and a clear idea of what where I went wrong last year. Now I need to figure out ways to use up the 23 pints of applesauce nobody eats 😂

LOL relatable. I’m looking at some things thinking “man, I thought I was doing good using that up” until I find 10 more hidden 😂

@@seedandsparrowhomestead pickles are my biggest problem. I don't know why I always make so many when I know we won't eat them all. I only planted 3 cucumber plants this year and vowed to make none. So far so good lol.

Is there a recipe for canned homemade ketchup? When you were talking about sauces, I realized I haven't seen anyone take about that.

There sure is! A few tested ones I believe. I personally don’t can it because I’ve found they don’t taste anything like what you buy at the store and my kids are picky 😂 it’s also pretty time consuming to cook it down to the right consistency and a bit much work for the amount you get! You can check out balls website... freshpreserving.com and the nchfps site for some ketchup recipe if you don’t have the Ball books ☺️

I think Becky from Acre Homestead made some home made / canned ketchup last year. It did take quite a long time to cook down into the right consistency, but she had some ideas for doing it a bit differently next time. She says it turned out very delicious.

Cleaning the door: Try in this order... vinegar, Everclear or similar high proof alcohol, and if those don't work order yourself some Novus 1 plastic polish (Novus 2 is a scratch repair, should you ever need it too), but then follow up the Novus with the vinegar and Everclear to remove any residue. Works like a charm! I use Novus on all my acrylic stuff, regardless of how thick. And I know you want to go through this elimination diet in the way it was set out for you, but Sue Becker of Bread Beckers would say that home milled breads will be what heals you. Her background is as a certified nutritionist, and she has a way of explaining the healing properties and components of whole, fresh milled grains that may encourage you to test the waters. You can always sprout the grains before milling if you are worried about the phytic acids. Before I forget, you can get stickers off Amazon that are disolvable and they fit canning lids perfectly (though you could stick it to the glass too)! I use them on lids that have previously been used for canning but are now being repurposed for storage or for my freeze dried foods we have out for snacking. I haven't gotten a good grip on my long term freeze dried foods yet, but I'm trying to pick up used filing cabinets as I saw in a FDing group online that an upright metal filing cabinet works great for foods in mylar. Right now mine are all in totes but there is no organization. Hubby wants them stored so that 3 days worth of food (protein, veggies, fruits, dairy) are in a tote together in case of emergencies (ours or someone we want to help). But I agree with you about sorting like things together for ease of finding them again! *sigh* Pros and cons to everything! It was motivating to watch you straighten this kind of stuff out as I need to revamp my canning stuff too. Wish I would have watched early in the morning instead of late at night!!! LOL
