You dont need to be a diesel mechanic to review the driveability of a truck. I was hoping more for a mechanical review, and what some of the pros and cons are of this newer design 3.0L diesel and how the LZ0 has improved over the LM2
I prefer the new shifter to the old one in my last Sierra. The column shifter would bounce around on rough roads. This is much better than the knob that Ram uses.

I think you should stick to reviewing 2000's loud obnoxious ford's. You contradicted yourself a couple times on torque and power. This engine is a solid option for everyone. It gives you power, fuel economy and towing capabilities. The turbo is not a regular turbo either hence no lag. It's a twin scroll turbo. 1 dollar per liter more (than gas) though where I live. I like the engine for sure, just this diesel situation in an oil exporting country is a bit ridiculous IMO.
Here where I live diesel is within $0.50 of regular 87 and I get at min 10mpg better then if my truck had the 6.2 gas which is the only other engine option that could be had in a Denali Ultimate. I average about 28mpg and best I have got is 37.5. I have never even got those numbers in a car before. If I had the 6.2 it would probably get on average around 18 I am assuming and best I would ever see is probably 23-25. Gas prices skyrocketed earlier this year and diesel prices stayed the same basically here too so diesel was almost the exact same price for a couple months as regular 87. It uses so little fuel its probably been a month since I even filled it up and I still have a half tank. I guess I have only drove about 300 miles in that month but I have a 2nd truck with the 5.3 mom has been driving and she fills it up every week or 2 lol.
@@nunyabusiness6919 That is pretty good. I guess you are buying it by the liter there which is what like 3.7 liters I think per gallon. Both 87 and diesel are just a little over $3 per gallon here. I am out of town though so that is what it was when I left. Where I am now prices are about $1 more each then back home down south. Diesel always used to be cheaper then gas but in the last 15 or so years diesel has been more expensive. Before I left town 87 was right around $3 and diesel was like $3.40 range. I know it varies some gas stations I saw as high as $4.99 for diesel which makes no sense since the gas station down the street its $1.50 cheaper lol. I like to buy at Costco but the Costco only has 87 and premium they don't sell diesel. They only sell top tier fuels though. Lot of gas stations here sell top tier but from what I can tell only the gas is top tier rated not the diesel.
I have 2 of these trucks with the 3.0L diesel. I have check engine lights on in both of them. Something to do with the NOX sensor......my dealer tells me GM currently does not have a fix for it. I have a 21 3.0 LM2 and I love the thing. I also agree with you about the noise, wish it was a hair louder. I daily drive a 2001 vw golf diesel and she def lets you know its a diesel LOL... As far as the 10 speed I like it. My guess as to why it behaves like you mentioned is pure fuel economy, pushing loads of boost means more fuel.
Nailed it on the head! I was thinking about that as I was edition this video. definitely a fuel thing. but as for driving the 10 speed shifted smooth and fast - no complaints.
I have a 21 gmc 4x4 3.0 and the transmission broke down at 53k i used it for hauling few times only, everything was really good until now... I don't know what to think about it😢
@@BrianKrahmer thank you for the info. I will be pulling a max of 6.5k. I believe the 3.23 should be more than enough and keep the fuel efficiency as a daily driver.
@@ptjr89 yes you are correct. The fuel consumption with the 3.73 gears is very minimal but way better for towing. Torque etc. They are harder to find but worth every penny. IMHO
2021 owner. My manual recommended the first 500 miles at 55mph and lower with varying speeds. If I remember that was in the diesel engine supplement not in the regular truck manual. I did a bit over 6000 miles towing a 7500 lb travel trailer this past summer. 13 mpg That’s about what I expected. At 55 - 60 mph not towing I’ll get between 26-30 mpg. Towing that tall trailer cuts my mpg almost exactly in half. It did close to that with the 5.3 gasser I previously owned. Unladen the 5.3 would get around 22 mpg. Put that trailer back there and 8-10 mpg was doing good. I could move that to 11 by driving at 55 mph in the 5.3. The diesel got the 13 running 65 mph with perhaps 1/4 of the drive at 70 mph.
Great review, from some of the comments it might be better to go with the 3:73 gears in my opinion. I'm waiting on the 2023 refresh with upped HP/TQ, should be interesting when I decide to bite the bullet. Hope you do a video on refreshed engine. Cheers
I like diesel the only problem is I’ve only worked on gas engines so I know nothing about disels and I know they run away if the seals go bad but hopefully the seals don’t go bad on these engines until at least 350k miles
since I have driven GM iron for years .... but it will fall apart in about 200K. Also the oil pump is driven with a rubber belt and you must remove the transmission to replace the rubber belt. Also.... why would I want to pay for a quiet diesel?
Next time try it in tow/haul mode to see if it holds the gears longer. Putting my '15 Sierra 6.2 in tow/haul makes it feel extra sporty. I don't really do it often because I'm more interested in fuel economy but it does seem to make a difference.
Your issues with the 10 speed is my issue with all modern automatic transmissions, they don't lug enough. They constantly want the downshift and then upshift as soon as you stop accelerating, makes for an annoying experience on hilly terrain and it dumps a shit ton of heat into the transmissions when towing.
I buy used simply because I can not afford or rationalize a truck worth over $100.0 new. After your first review of the engine and it's design I would question even buying used. Mainly because of the motor having such challenges in checking oil pump belt, and other components.
I have a 2021 with 30,000…….it has an issue starting since it had 270 miles on it… Dealers can’t fix it….using oil in 3000 miles….a couple other issues also…. I love the truck but don’t trust it…going to trade for a gasser! Gm needs to get these problems fixed…they have known about them since 2019
The LZO duramax is the best engine you can buy in the half ton segment! Only thing I don’t like is the shifter. It needs to go back to a column shifter.
I wonder if putting it in Tow Haul mode would provide the shifting you would like to have? It does change shifting but I cant say it would do what you wanted. I have a 2022 GMC with the 3.0 and love the thing. I'm so glad I went diesel and this truck/configuration in a 1/2 ton was what sold me.

2022 3.0 LM2 Silverado, the worst truck I’ve ever owned. 25k miles, crank seal leaking, long crank issue, engine sputtering, transmission clunking, even at lower speeds, fuel regulator malfunctioning, fuel pump malfunctioning, fuel filter replacement required also. Yes, all under warranty, but hell of an inconvenience and loss of income from work. I rather own a Ram now!!!
It sounds to me like he had a predetermined prejudiced against GM vehicle before he even started his review it was very negative if you listen to his remarks as he did his review
Ya rams are nice, I love a dial shifter so my truck sometimes won’t go in gear , and like my neighbors ram he sometimes can’t even back up out of his driveway or take off from a green light, POS truck but yeah the giant screen in cool.
i disagree. i have put 15k miles on my '21, and normally drive very conservatively. not only is this thing VERY eager to down-shift, but the cruise control is SUPER aggressive. go drive a 3.0 TDI Audi Q5 to feel how a really well-programmed transmission shifts, IMO.
How ridiculous to dwell on the lack of noise. The quieter the better. If you want it noisy then open the window and freeze. Who makes the engine? Is this one Isuzu too? And as someone who has a V8 Duramax, I sure hope it's a lot easier to change the injectors on this one.
People actually buy this truck? It’s not all that bad, but when you have a choice between the Duramax, the Power Stroke, or the Cummins, why settle for the one that finishes third? All the manufacturers have had problems, but not at the level of GM and the Duramax. Good luck and make sure you get the longest extended warranty that they offer.
I mean I wont disagree with you. But I think this engine has some potential. 3 years no the road and no major issues which is pretty damn good for a modern diesel. obviously if you have the money and are looking at a 2500. A cummins is the gold standard.
There is no Cummins available in a RAM 1500. From the 1500 diesel engine options, this 3.0 Duramax is closest in design to the Cummins being that it is an inline 6. The Ford and RAM 1500 diesels were V6 designs. Notice that I said "were" as they are no longer being offered so if you want a 1500 diesel, this is your only option and it is a fantastic engine.
a Duramax is not a Duramax! the 3.0 was designed mostly by the German division of GM, Opel. The 6.7 was a joint-engineering effort with Isuzu. So completely different engines with completely different missions. I wished there were efficient small diesel trucks for 15 years before they finally came out. I now have a '21 Sierra averaging about 32mpg running around, and i love it.
All this technology and still can’t make a manual transmission, they throw a 6 speed into it and I would prob go out and buy one but until then I’ll stick to my good old 7.3 idi 5 speed
For just shy of 105K you can buy a heavy duty diesel and have money left over. Nice truck though, but not at that price. Good review on this truck. 😎 👍👍👍👍👍
He has to be a Canadian. Huge difference in our money. That truck here is like $65k probably in USD. I have a Denali Ultimate the fanciest truck you can buy and it was only $83k so

Here in Edmonton 87 is $1.36.9, diesel is $1.30.9
@@nunyabusiness6919 That is pretty good.
@@nunyabusiness6919 Did you notice I posted that 7 months ago? Way to go.
I have 2 of these trucks with the 3.0L diesel. I have check engine lights on in both of them. Something to do with the NOX sensor......my dealer tells me GM currently does not have a fix for it. Doesn't seem to affect how the trucks run or perform at all however when your check engine light is on your remote start won't work. Up here it's not to start your truck ahead of time in the cold winters
Love your videos Frank
My dad and I both have SLT 3.0 Duramax. I ordered mine special with the max trailering package so mine has 3.73 rear axle while his has 3.23. Night and day difference in driving experience. Mine gets up and goes much faster.
I also have the Max Tow Package. Do you notice a difference in gas mileage?
My dad has same truck without max tow package and mine gets better fuel economy. His is a 2021 and mine is a 2022 refresh.
With all those gears it would be amazing with a 410. Like my 8.1
@@ronkirkham3410 3.73 gears are perfect for a tow/daily driving rig, in my humble opinion
I would have liked 3.73 but I have a Denali Ultimate and you can only get 3.23 with an Ultimate.
is this the same motor found in the yukon diesel?
Can you review the F250? And explain the 6.7 diesel in depth.
The shifter is great. The paddle shifter is great also
Agreed
I have had two the little diesel and I loved them
honestly great to drive
@@GettysGarage it drives great . It is the smoothest engine
How many miles would you be able to put on the LZ0
Yeah had a hard enough time going from the column to the dial shifter on my Ram but that rocker shifter on the GMC is is much less intuitive, plus I prefer having a bench seat to have more space.
I don't know what to think about it😢
You talked about having a good torque. Did the one you tested had the 3.23 Rear Axel or the 3.73? Thanks like always for all your input.
my '21 has the 3.23 I believe, and the torque is fantastic
@@BrianKrahmer thank you for the info. I will be pulling a max of 6.5k. I believe the 3.23 should be more than enough and keep the fuel efficiency as a daily driver.
I have a 3.73 axle and nothing is better in every aspect
@@Steve-kx6hd I will have to order then. I like the fact that I can go up to 13k with a 3.73. All the ones any dealer brings to their lot is the 3.23.
@@ptjr89 yes you are correct. The fuel consumption with the 3.73 gears is very minimal but way better for towing. Torque etc.
They are harder to find but worth every penny. IMHO
Is there any real break in procedure with these 3.0 engines ? Nothing in the owners manual, but a lot of opinions online.
there most likely is. personally I'm not sure but almost every engine has some kind of break-in.
@@joechandler8398 mine as well
Great review, from some of the comments it might be better to go with the 3:73 gears in my opinion. I'm waiting on the 2023 refresh with upped HP/TQ, should be interesting when I decide to bite the bullet. Hope you do a video on refreshed engine. Cheers
I have the 2.8L Duramax in the Colorado and I love it so far but there is lag in the throttle input unlike that 3L
totally different engine platform from the 3.0, btw
@@BrianKrahmer I know but it’s different I just wanted to put more information out there for people
Where in Ontario is your shop?
I don't really do it often because I'm more interested in fuel economy but it does seem to make a difference.
the towing mode in my '21 Sierra 10-sp has worked fantastically, having towed about 10k miles with it already
I have a 2021 with 30,000…….it has an issue starting since it had 270 miles on it…
Dealers can’t fix it….using oil in 3000 miles….a couple other issues also….
I love the truck but don’t trust it…going to trade for a gasser!
Gm needs to get these problems fixed…they have known about them since 2019
They should’ve put like a 4 or 5 liter in. 3 is small
Re Intercooler: Shorter plumbing makes for faster response, Mr. Mechanic.
Is this the Lm2 or the LZ0
The LZO duramax is the best engine you can buy in the half ton segment! Only thing I don’t like is the shifter. It needs to go back to a column shifter.
I have a GMC 2020 3.0, and I have the shifter on the column.
I bet it would impact it a little. I think it is probably for fuel economy. more boost usually results in more fuel burnt.
@@GettysGarage can you recommend that engine the 3.0 ? I want buy one but I keep truck for 14 years or 150k miles ... I have 2010 bougth brand new now has 110k and 13 years old I starer to look for new truck ... please give me you opinion on the 3.0 I am really good in maintenance
been nice to know what trim level you were driving geez
SLT I believe
Bummer you couldn’t find an LZ0! Doesn’t it drive amazing!!!! Jeez I love my 2022 Trail Boss! My Dmax tows my RV better than my 6.4 Hemi and also gets 5mpgs better while towing and 13mpgs better driving in the city!
Put it in sport mode it's a beast
You should try the latest version of the ecodiesel, 19 and up. It has throttle response like this duramax and it is actually difficult to pull away from a stop on wet pavement without spinning the tires. Very very different experience from the older versions.
Fair enough, I have not driven one of the newer ones yet!
The new 2023 3.0 duramax just got updated with more hp and torque. Try that one.
@@GettysGarage I am told the new 3rd Gen ecodiesel drives like a 40hp tuned 2nd Gen. Ecodiesel. I have a 3rd Gen. And a stage 1 software only 3rd Gen drives like a stage 2 deleted 2nd Gen.
But it’s obsolete in January
Who wants a v6 when you can get an in-line diesel.
I’m going drive one tomorrow. I’ll see this or the 5.3 🤷🏻♂️
Your power wagon looks awesome too. But needs bigger tires. Lots of space in wheels
Looks are 1 thing and I like bigger tires too, but maybe he's trying to salvage that insanely awesome fuel mileage he gets 😀.
It's on the to-do list lmao. probably going with 35's. nothing crazy but it'll fill the truck out better and give me an inch of ground clearance.
I'd love this in the at4x or the ZR2
I believe you can have one in the AT4?? not sure about the ZR2 though
At4 has it but the at4x and zr2 they can't fit the diesel in because of the added from clearance.
Good review
Thank you sir!
you didnt use the manual shift pads.
Lmao I honestly didn't even think to use them. there was just so much new stuff and I wanted to see how the truck drove on it's own.
Good video
2022 3.0 LM2 Silverado, the worst truck I’ve ever owned. 25k miles, crank seal leaking, long crank issue, engine sputtering, transmission clunking, even at lower speeds, fuel regulator malfunctioning, fuel pump malfunctioning, fuel filter replacement required also. Yes, all under warranty, but hell of an inconvenience and loss of income from work. I rather own a Ram now!!!
How much can it tow
maybe do the test again in tow/haul mode. takes longer to shift
what year is this???? you nee to place year in ur title!
Can the car work in hot areas?
It sounds to me like he had a predetermined prejudiced against GM vehicle before he even started his review it was very negative if you listen to his remarks as he did his review
I really need to know the type of transmission!!!
Ya rams are nice, I love a dial shifter so my truck sometimes won’t go in gear , and like my neighbors ram he sometimes can’t even back up out of his driveway or take off from a green light, POS truck but yeah the giant screen in cool.
Is it me, or is that shifter a waste of space?
Duramax all day
I wouldn't have that truck...oil pump situation is a deal killer!
A little bit louder and ditch the joy stick shifter. These are my two complaints also, but the pros far out number the cons.
Agreed! I had to pick on something to be fair in the this video but the pros are far far better then the cons!
Put it into sport mode it hangs in gear a lot longer.
As you drive it more and it learns your drive style, it will be less aggressive to downshift
fair enough! it was my first time driving it lol
i disagree. i have put 15k miles on my '21, and normally drive very conservatively. not only is this thing VERY eager to down-shift, but the cruise control is SUPER aggressive. go drive a 3.0 TDI Audi Q5 to feel how a really well-programmed transmission shifts, IMO.
No such word as ANYWAY(S) it is ANYWAY there is no S Great video!
me to man analog all the way with the bench seat in the front
How ridiculous to dwell on the lack of noise. The quieter the better. If you want it noisy then open the window and freeze.
Who makes the engine? Is this one Isuzu too? And as someone who has a V8 Duramax, I sure hope it's a lot easier to change the injectors on this one.
ok we see your preference
$93k for an SLT? That’s Canadian right?
16k kms never heard my turbo in my 22 🤷♂️
People actually buy this truck?
Dodge guy prefers a knob shifter 😂
I don't like either of them lmao what is so wrong with a normal gear lever lol
@@GettysGarage gm still offers a column shifter. Up to the slt trim with bench seat
Put a Banks PedalMonster on it if you want that oomph..
You don't like the shifter but you like that stupid dial Ram uses.
All this technology and still can’t make a manual transmission, they throw a 6 speed into it and I would prob go out and buy one but until then I’ll stick to my good old 7.3 idi 5 speed
The brakes feel so soft compared to a gasser
dude wtf?! that price is nuts!
For just shy of 105K you can buy a heavy duty diesel and have money left over. Nice truck though, but not at that price.
Good review on this truck.
😎
👍👍👍👍👍
He has to be a Canadian. Huge difference in our money. That truck here is like $65k probably in USD. I have a Denali Ultimate the fanciest truck you can buy and it was only $83k so
Where’s the tow video
Shifter reminds me of my son's Hyundai electric car.
lol It's a little too fancy for a pick up truck. that's all I'm saying! put a standard gear shifter in there and leave it alone.
Quite for a diesel is still way too loud. The ticking sounds terrible. That's a big NO for me. Sticking to gas.
I can't listen to guys that don't know how to say "Z".
Literally the only country on the planet that pronounces ZED as Zee.. whose really the outlier here?
Why do you continually review the Duramax Diesel while standing in front of your Dodge? If you didn’t have the Duramax there any longer, you could have simply had a non-vehicle background.
Seems louder then my 6.6
