In stark contrast with today's male "stars," Mitchum combined an effortless raw masculinity with a sharp intelligence and rough, personal charm that made him irresistible to both men and women. There was no sense of phony macho or pretension on display; with Mitchum, what you saw is what you got, and cinema's all the richer for it!

Robert Mitchum was an interview with an absurd streak a mile wide with holes of varying diameter & depth thruout. The deadpan delivery locks it. If ever there was an actor who COULD have jammed with Firesign Theater, Mitchum was the one. He was wack, the best kind of wack.

Yeah I know what you mean...Letterman is no Frost or Cavett for sure. Mitchum is so interesting to listen to in a long interview but the best Letterman can do is keep it to a few sound bites. Its not his fault though. There is no real venue today for good solid interviews.

Letterman did a great job as interviewer that night.
The mood seemed relaxed and lighthearted.
But Mitchum’s continuous problems with booze wasn’t funny.
He could be mean and unpleasant when he was drunk.
But he was always worth listening to no matter who did the interview.
I became a fan in high school after reading the long article in Rolling Stone when “Friends of Eddie Coyle” was being filmed in Boston.
But I had already seen a few of his movies by then.
