The bigger issue with ANBU in general is that they're the embodiment of what we originally suspected elite ninja to be. The ones who carry out ugly, and usually unethical work for their governments. Itachi... Kakashi.... Shisui.... these were prime candidates. We suspected them to be cloak and dagger assassins, each capable of unimaginable power. But no. The story took a different focus, around jinchuriki and the overall Akatsuki. As a result, there was less and less from for actual missions, the kind we always imagined we'd see from Part 1. Every mission after part 1 is based on Akatsuki or Sasuke, which while mostly cool, isn't exactly hospital to spying on other countries, having the cool masks and doing ANBU-like stuff. Root ANBU is almost worse because it takes the ANBU, a very very cool idea at first, and mangles it even further within the context of the story. This is why Naruto needed more real MISSIONS in other countries or lands that weren't solely based around finding Sasuke or watching out for the Akatsuki. It could've fleshed out the ANBU more and overall built the world better. This is also what makes Dygo's rewrite so cool, is that we've actually not seen that much of the Akatsuki so far. We've met some of their members, but they don't completely dominate the plot, which to me is a welcome deviation.
Didn't we have kakashi's entire background and stuff within the Anbu, same with itachi and shisui in the anbu. Essentially high ranked ninjas that did A-S rank missions. Just kinda wish there were more stuff, but maybe the itachi novel or kakashi novel goes more in depth, I'm not familiar with any of these novels I'm just assuming.
the anbu are weird, they're ninjas who actually are ninjas in Naruto and are considered the "elite" ninjas when we already had Jonin for that my headcanon is that anbu aren't really stronger, their status as elite is grossly exaggerated since they work directly for the village and Hokage while your Chunin and Jonin do "ninja work" for the rest of the Land of Fire and other countries that will pay tl;dr Jonin and Chunin are glorified mercenaries Anbu only work for the village so their status is boasted

Other issue with the ANBU is that they did not keep up with the massive increase in power scaling and threat. Especially when you consider the types of threats and their power in Shippuden. The ANBU outside of a few specific characters never really did any thing all that amazing in Part 1.
Tbh the reason Anbu doesn’t get many power upgrades is because Danzo always suspected his subordinates and never would allow them to get to powerful that he couldn’t control them
They’re very “tell, don’t show” with the ANBU. Sure Itachi and Shisui and Kakashi are great, but they had time to show their chops outside of ANBU operations and they all had the shared trait of having a Sharingan, which weirdly lessens the impact of the ANBU even more because not every one of the ANBU had a Sharingan, obviously. If they showed unnamed ANBU kicking ass, it’d make them more intimidating. I’d have loved for the ANBU to be something more like a diverse version of the Earth Kingdom Military Police from Avatar: the Last Airbender, ruthless and scary and efficient.
One of the main reasons I don’t like Danzo and the Root Anbu is because that they’re a convenient moral cop-out for the leaf village. Every bad or malicious action carried out by the Leaf Village wasn’t actually done by the leaf village; it was all Danzo. Ruining Kabuto’s life and driving him into the dark side, convinced Hanzo to betray Nagato and killed Yahiko to make him a villain, and forced Itachi to massacre his own clan. The hokage and leaf village did nothing wrong, it was all Danzo. Just get rid of him and it’ll all be rainbows and sunshine. It’s just too easy and only serves to keep the heroes squeaky clean so they don’t have to deal with or face any of the negative consequences of Konaha’s past. It was all Danzo and only Danzo.

Anbu failed to protect their Hokage twice, got ragdolled by Kabuto pre time skip. They're supposed to be masters of infiltration and assassination, but are stopped by the Sound Village Four, a group defeated by several Genin level ninja and a couple fresh Chunin level ninja. Anbu: In terms of feats, we have no feats.
as much as I love the Naruto story, I kinda wanted to see more of the world that Naruto lived in, as there was so much lore that we got to take part in.
THAT is a very interesting idea that expands on what we already know about Neji, and would highlight some core issues with not only Konaha's culture of systematic abuse under the guise of Clan Rule, and the politics of being a military state that allows said clans to carry out that abuse in exchange for power. So basically no way Kishimoto could follow through with it

Though with leanings into the benefits of the Anbu for individuals like Neji and Orochimaru with Neji essentially being free of the Hyuga and being able to further his own abilities without having restrictions from the main branch.

I would hesitate to say that the Root is *completely* useless and fodder when Torune managed to force Obito to amputate an arm. Fodder doesn't do that. Look at the effort needed by War Arc characters just to scratch a mask. If it wasn't the Hashirama Arm then it might have mattered more.
Obito just has hax, its always been like that. Kamui and Hashirama cells will do that. Torune would have beat Obito if he didn't have regen cells and then obito just sends Torune and Fu to the Kamui dimension instead of fighting them to the end. BS honestly He could just sneak up on anyone and send them to a dimension to be trapped or end them half way to instakill.
That wasn't due to competence on their part, Obito literally just decided to touch Torune for no reason despite knowing what his jutsu did. Their fighting style is no better than brawling, they use wide swings with a tipless tanto (which means no stabbing) and call it an assassination technique! Torune literally stumbled a good 3 feet into Fu despite knowing the guy they were fighting could turn intangible. Root's a mess.

Danzo and the Roots are just excuses to make Hiruzen look better and fix several loosing ends in Itachi and Hiruzen history, which ended up turning things more convoluted and made Hiruzen looks even more bad.
The Anbu (both regular and root) arent weak. They were just to underdeveloped It makes no sense these members would be “fodder”. But we are so use to comparing everyone to the strongest people we see that the story revolves around (Uchiha and their wee wee gans). Anbu arent gonna be weak lore wise. The best of the best and those with the right mentality will be in the Anbu. But again, they were underdeveloped.
but when the author only uses a character (or a group in this case) to show how some characters are specially powefull, nobody will respect them, it also happens with aldebaran from saint seiya
I like to believe the reason the Root where such a let down was because of Danzo himself with his training and the fact he thinks he knows best but ended up make more problems for the village.
Not hard to do since they are relevant characters into the story. That was the main problem with anbu it had no significant character as an anbu. There was kakashi's lover, The Girl with the purple hair I forgot her name, kishimoto forgot about her as well
I would of liked if the clans played a bigger role in ruling. That way Donzo could be trying to get rid of the clans by taking out smaller one's to spread the bigger ones thin then striking their cores while they were weak, and allowing him to slowly build up the Hokaga becoming a centralized government. This would allow more interactions with the clans as they actually have to govern things. Like the Uchihas being wiped out early really fucking Donzo as the power Vacuum cause a heavy load to suddenly hit the Hokga and anbu before they could handle exposing's all his resources and setting him back years.

I'm not that surprised. Outside of Sai, Fuu, and Torune, they didn't seem to do much. They're mostly operators working behind the scenes, not frontline soldiers. Put those guys up in the front lines and they'll snap like twigs.
Fuu and Torune are probably Asuma level I’d guess. Ultimately Obito claps them but they were still able to make him amputate an arm. Whereas frankly I don’t see Asuma doing a single thing to Obito even if he had support from another equivalently skilled ninja .
They could have been best used post mission where let's pretend Naruto saves a village and everyone cheers. We then see the hidden boss act tough and then get assassinated to bury the secret the leaf was taking money kickbacks Basically a have your cake and eat it too
I general i think Danzo was underused, like you said, even though they kind of had opportunities to do power plays. Imagine if the Danzo or the root were the ones to inform Jiraiya about the rain village and akatsuki, just to have him die and get there way with Naruto because national security. Also the root was the perfect place for another crazy scientist type of character someone who probably learned from Orochimaru in the day
I think I've said this on a different channel but what are you expecting these opponents to do against kage level opponents? Ninjas like kakashi are rare and it's stated as such multiple times throughout the series. Yes these ninjas are better than average but their real job is to be in the shadows handling top secret missions, not necessarily being the strongest. So when they run into a kage level opponent like the akatsuki, the 3 sanins, etc. What the hell are they supposed to do?!?!? They've all been shown to be pretty unique and have some fantastic justsus but the opponents they are facing are just that much better and OP. A good way to think of this is like bleach hax. If Ichigo, for example, were to face Renji, Renji doesn't have the right abilities to beat Ichigo because Ichigo is multiple times faster than he is and would simply speed blitz him. Or you could say Aizen's BS power which basically defeats anyone (I have no idea why he didn't use it against Ichigo that was a straight up plot hole). This is what happens to a lot of the anbu as well, what would they do against giant snakes? The giant dog that multiplies the more you attack it? Orochimaru? Sasuke when he went rogue? Naruto if he went on a rampage? Hell the other villages had top members die when their tailed beast jinjurikis went on a rampage too and kages even got injured. It's not really surprising that they can't beat the opponents the plot is forcing them to fight rather than showing them doing an actual mission to show how useful and cool they are. It's just bad story writing imo.
Eh...ignoring the meta reasons you can argue that Danzo didn't attack because Orochimaru has leverage. Danzo's ability to use that Sharigan arm was because of him. Because Danzo's entire existence hinges on a society that doesn't take too appropriately to what he does he let it go. That said after Hiruzen was killed it couldn't have been a better time but I'd like to think that because he knows Orochimaru was alive that it would all go poorly for him. Once it was discovered that Orochimaru was gone and there was NO candidate then and only then was it the proper time. Not only was he the right candidate from the inside but no one could expose his secrets
Maybe there should’ve been a flashback to part one. Like one where Danzo is essentially trying to do the same thing he does in shippuden saying “this a perfect time for me to become hokage. Stay put.” While Orochimaru is destroying the Leaf but then his plans get ruined when Itachi shows back up to the village basically threatening Danzo. After the flash back Danzo could say “now that he’s no longer in the picture this is my chance” or something like that. I think this would explain why Danzo didn’t strike the minute Hiruzen died and it would be a quick fix bc clearly Kishimoto just didn’t think about Danzo while he was writing part 1.
@10:00, Danzo didn't make any moves because Itachi showed up with almost no regard for his own safety and took down effectively the most competent jonin in the village (Kakashi) with no diff ease. Danzo makes a move for power and he is dealing with the generational goat on his doorstep with no one to put in front of him as a shield. So? Danzo doesn't make a move. You can call this a retcon or you can call it withheld information but at the end of the day it is what it is.
I think the problem is, in normally Shonen anime you see power ups step by steps by steps. In naruto it's safe to say its Academy --->Genin--->Chunin ----> Jounin ----> Hokage, then you have what I call "the secret ranking" which is "hokage canidates" which is jounin war heroes, who are strong canidates to become hokage one day. Your kakashis, your might gais, your jiriyas. Naruto kinda skipped show casing Chunin, since naruto bodied one by the end of the first episode, showing Chunin was basically just adult Genin and nothing special. and then we Saw Jounin for a little bit in the zabuza arch, but after that we went straight past where the Anbu would be, and straight into the Hokage tier level threat ninjas which was itachi and Jiriya. So in the part of the story where Anbu ninja would of been relevant they were basically skipped over. And this was because largely Naruto basically skipped being a Chunin, he show cased by the end of the first episode he could easily body a Chunin and we went straight into Jounin level threats, and than straight into hokage level threats on his first mission. Basically Naruto didn't really have a proper "climb the steps" style of show casing, cause he was so stupidly OP at the very start of the show.
it would have been interesting to see a root anbu group chasing down sasuke like mad men to avenge their comrades and leader. That would have been sick.
i recall in shippuden... the Root member slaughtered the entire clan that had planned to attack the Leaf, so probably most of their mission is covert and involves mass massacre which Kishimoto didnt show us in the Manga
Despite trying to protect the Leaf, danzo and root are doing more harm then good. He just goes against the best interests of the village. Wiping off the uchiha clan, severely weakening the village. Giving away classified info to orochimaru, again weakening the village and making it easier for the snake bastard to attack it. And who knows what other things he has done offscreen to compromise village security. He was not the root, feeding and nurturing the great tree. He was the termite that was intent on hollowing it out from the inside.
Again, just like with the Anbu Black Ops, the Root Anbu should have a powerful character who is still active as member (or passive, but makeup for it with likability and/or competence). However, there should be a plot revolving the Root Anbu where they proved to be a difficult, legitimate threat for the Main characters. The elite mooks that work as a quirky mini-boss squad for Naruto. Should there be feats for the Root Anbu as well?
To be fair a simple explanation as to why they never did anything is because they did, we just weren't shown what they do cause well that's their whole shtick
Danzo probably hesitated to do it. Because the one guy he respected died. It's shown to us very clearly danzo has a warped sense of justice. He still believes in it, and it's shown others believe it too time and again(sun and moon theme and all) so he probably had it planned out but couldn't get himself to do it.
To be fair in the Land of Rain, Danzo did do something wrong as he backed the wrong team to get the most for his own nation. Instead of what he did do he should have still set up the Akatsuki, but instead of going with Hanzo, he instead dips and then has his Anbu disguised as hidden rain rescue the Akatsuki. Thus you've forced the Akatsuki to actually wage a civil war since Hanzo would take what happened as the start of a civil war, which would help disrupt future peace talks. Mean while you've taken a group whose leaders are already predisposed to be sympathetic to the Hidden Leaf and left them indebted to you for "saving" them. Then the bonus that since the Akatsuki are younger than Hanzo, once they take over the Land of Rain you've got a favorable leader in charge for longer, or one that might consider making the Land of Rain part of the Land of FIre, which Hanzo wouldn't.
Could danzo have unlocked the rinnegan? IIRC the requirements to get it are to have a sharigan (idk if having a ms or ems is necessary) and senju blood.
That's what was said at 1st via obito to konan, but its later revealed that what's actually required is indras and ashuras chakra specifically to create Hagoromos chakra. Just senju and uchiha mix isn't enough.
They could have done a time skip avoiding the forced Naruto has a son who needs spectacular adventures too! And done a Root revival and a new ninja war, that slowly built from espionage to full blown conflict just as in Naruto and never ruined the Madara arch with incredibly lame and off theme villains.

So if you've read the Percy Jackson books you know going into the River Styx makes your skin and vulnerable but makes one portion the place where you can be killed.... There’s a high likely Danzo intentionally made them not as strong as a Jonin level Shinobi = So that they don’t turn against him / attempt to turn against him like Kakashi and Itachi. So he indoctrinate kids while they’re young, give them a curse seal on their tongue… they don’t get any real development. Theyre just there for loyalty. At least in terms of lore reasons.
The fact that Danzo and the Root just chilled around not doing anything should have pretty much put him out of commission politically, instead of empowering him. He should've waited until Konoha was softened, but not beaten *then* made a move, so he'd look like the cavalry coming in to save the day instead of outing himself as the craven coward that he was. In fact, there *should* have been a revolt against Danzo or at least some dissent within the ranks of root because he was literally doing the opposite of their holy mission statement. He talked a big game about caring about the village, but he always chose paths that fostered his own power, even when to the detriment of the village, such as the Uchiha Massacre
Never saw the Root as powerful from an individual standpoint, but more from the idea that these are brainwashed and indoctrinated soldiers who will easily run an ally through if it meant wounding an enemy on the other side.
Instead of giving us all the unwanted filler, what shonen should've done was had kishimoto or someone else use all those episodes to add more to the more to the worldbuilding and go further in depth about subjects and concepts about the naruto universe instead. Details like how hashirama got sage mode, root's dark past, how the sasori killed the 3rd kazekage, or us being given the answers to plotholes, rectons or for the episodes to answer other questions we might have.
in universe we're not exactly sure if people would have assumed he was pulling a ccoup or in some means responsible for hiruzen's death. I don't think the other elders are _that_ stupid, especially after how root was "disbanded" after the Uchiha massacre.

@@AliceBlackwood I was talking about Danzo. But others would also say Hiruzen (and Danzo) brought about peace in the village for years before a 4th Hokage was considered. Meaning things were great for almost 40+ years since Hiruzen's tenure. Things got out of hand when he had to fill in Minato's shoes as Hokage. By that time, he was past his prime in terms of leadership skills but still tried to use his experience to manage things.

I would hesitate to say that the Root is *completely* useless and fodder when Torune managed to force Obito to amputate an arm. Fodder doesn't do that. Look at the effort needed by War Arc characters just to scratch a mask. If it wasn't the Hashirama Arm then it might have mattered more.

That wasn't due to competence on their part, Obito literally just decided to touch Torune for no reason despite knowing what his jutsu did. Their fighting style is no better than brawling, they use wide swings with a tipless tanto (which means no stabbing) and call it an assassination technique! Torune literally stumbled a good 3 feet into Fu despite knowing the guy they were fighting could turn intangible. Root's a mess.

Danzo and the Roots are just excuses to make Hiruzen look better and fix several loosing ends in Itachi and Hiruzen history, which ended up turning things more convoluted and made Hiruzen looks even more bad.

I would of liked if the clans played a bigger role in ruling. That way Donzo could be trying to get rid of the clans by taking out smaller one's to spread the bigger ones thin then striking their cores while they were weak, and allowing him to slowly build up the Hokaga becoming a centralized government. This would allow more interactions with the clans as they actually have to govern things. Like the Uchihas being wiped out early really fucking Donzo as the power Vacuum cause a heavy load to suddenly hit the Hokga and anbu before they could handle exposing's all his resources and setting him back years.
This series killed itself by lightening its theme , the darkness of this series made naruto naive hopefullness acceptable

I'm not that surprised. Outside of Sai, Fuu, and Torune, they didn't seem to do much. They're mostly operators working behind the scenes, not frontline soldiers. Put those guys up in the front lines and they'll snap like twigs.

Fuu and Torune are probably Asuma level I’d guess. Ultimately Obito claps them but they were still able to make him amputate an arm. Whereas frankly I don’t see Asuma doing a single thing to Obito even if he had support from another equivalently skilled ninja .

I general i think Danzo was underused, like you said, even though they kind of had opportunities to do power plays. Imagine if the Danzo or the root were the ones to inform Jiraiya about the rain village and akatsuki, just to have him die and get there way with Naruto because national security. Also the root was the perfect place for another crazy scientist type of character someone who probably learned from Orochimaru in the day

I think I've said this on a different channel but what are you expecting these opponents to do against kage level opponents? Ninjas like kakashi are rare and it's stated as such multiple times throughout the series. Yes these ninjas are better than average but their real job is to be in the shadows handling top secret missions, not necessarily being the strongest. So when they run into a kage level opponent like the akatsuki, the 3 sanins, etc. What the hell are they supposed to do?!?!? They've all been shown to be pretty unique and have some fantastic justsus but the opponents they are facing are just that much better and OP.
A good way to think of this is like bleach hax. If Ichigo, for example, were to face Renji, Renji doesn't have the right abilities to beat Ichigo because Ichigo is multiple times faster than he is and would simply speed blitz him. Or you could say Aizen's BS power which basically defeats anyone (I have no idea why he didn't use it against Ichigo that was a straight up plot hole). This is what happens to a lot of the anbu as well, what would they do against giant snakes? The giant dog that multiplies the more you attack it? Orochimaru? Sasuke when he went rogue? Naruto if he went on a rampage? Hell the other villages had top members die when their tailed beast jinjurikis went on a rampage too and kages even got injured. It's not really surprising that they can't beat the opponents the plot is forcing them to fight rather than showing them doing an actual mission to show how useful and cool they are. It's just bad story writing imo.

Danzo's ability to use that Sharigan arm was because of him. Because Danzo's entire existence hinges on a society that doesn't take too appropriately to what he does he let it go. That said after Hiruzen was killed it couldn't have been a better time but I'd like to think that because he knows Orochimaru was alive that it would all go poorly for him.
Once it was discovered that Orochimaru was gone and there was NO candidate then and only then was it the proper time. Not only was he the right candidate from the inside but no one could expose his secrets

Maybe there should’ve been a flashback to part one. Like one where Danzo is essentially trying to do the same thing he does in shippuden saying “this a perfect time for me to become hokage. Stay put.” While Orochimaru is destroying the Leaf but then his plans get ruined when Itachi shows back up to the village basically threatening Danzo. After the flash back Danzo could say “now that he’s no longer in the picture this is my chance” or something like that. I think this would explain why Danzo didn’t strike the minute Hiruzen died and it would be a quick fix bc clearly Kishimoto just didn’t think about Danzo while he was writing part 1.
@10:00, Danzo didn't make any moves because Itachi showed up with almost no regard for his own safety and took down effectively the most competent jonin in the village (Kakashi) with no diff ease. Danzo makes a move for power and he is dealing with the generational goat on his doorstep with no one to put in front of him as a shield. So? Danzo doesn't make a move. You can call this a retcon or you can call it withheld information but at the end of the day it is what it is.
I think the problem is, in normally Shonen anime you see power ups step by steps by steps.
In naruto it's safe to say its Academy --->Genin--->Chunin ----> Jounin ----> Hokage, then you have what I call "the secret ranking" which is "hokage canidates" which is jounin war heroes, who are strong canidates to become hokage one day. Your kakashis, your might gais, your jiriyas.
Naruto kinda skipped show casing Chunin, since naruto bodied one by the end of the first episode, showing Chunin was basically just adult Genin and nothing special. and then we Saw Jounin for a little bit in the zabuza arch, but after that we went straight past where the Anbu would be, and straight into the Hokage tier level threat ninjas which was itachi and Jiriya. So in the part of the story where Anbu ninja would of been relevant they were basically skipped over. And this was because largely Naruto basically skipped being a Chunin, he show cased by the end of the first episode he could easily body a Chunin and we went straight into Jounin level threats, and than straight into hokage level threats on his first mission. Basically Naruto didn't really have a proper "climb the steps" style of show casing, cause he was so stupidly OP at the very start of the show.

Despite trying to protect the Leaf, danzo and root are doing more harm then good. He just goes against the best interests of the village. Wiping off the uchiha clan, severely weakening the village. Giving away classified info to orochimaru, again weakening the village and making it easier for the snake bastard to attack it. And who knows what other things he has done offscreen to compromise village security.
He was not the root, feeding and nurturing the great tree. He was the termite that was intent on hollowing it out from the inside.

Again, just like with the Anbu Black Ops, the Root Anbu should have a powerful character who is still active as member (or passive, but makeup for it with likability and/or competence). However, there should be a plot revolving the Root Anbu where they proved to be a difficult, legitimate threat for the Main characters. The elite mooks that work as a quirky mini-boss squad for Naruto. Should there be feats for the Root Anbu as well?

Danzo probably hesitated to do it. Because the one guy he respected died. It's shown to us very clearly danzo has a warped sense of justice. He still believes in it, and it's shown others believe it too time and again(sun and moon theme and all) so he probably had it planned out but couldn't get himself to do it.

To be fair in the Land of Rain, Danzo did do something wrong as he backed the wrong team to get the most for his own nation. Instead of what he did do he should have still set up the Akatsuki, but instead of going with Hanzo, he instead dips and then has his Anbu disguised as hidden rain rescue the Akatsuki. Thus you've forced the Akatsuki to actually wage a civil war since Hanzo would take what happened as the start of a civil war, which would help disrupt future peace talks. Mean while you've taken a group whose leaders are already predisposed to be sympathetic to the Hidden Leaf and left them indebted to you for "saving" them. Then the bonus that since the Akatsuki are younger than Hanzo, once they take over the Land of Rain you've got a favorable leader in charge for longer, or one that might consider making the Land of Rain part of the Land of FIre, which Hanzo wouldn't.

That's what was said at 1st via obito to konan, but its later revealed that what's actually required is indras and ashuras chakra specifically to create Hagoromos chakra. Just senju and uchiha mix isn't enough.

The fact that Danzo and the Root just chilled around not doing anything should have pretty much put him out of commission politically, instead of empowering him. He should've waited until Konoha was softened, but not beaten *then* made a move, so he'd look like the cavalry coming in to save the day instead of outing himself as the craven coward that he was.
In fact, there *should* have been a revolt against Danzo or at least some dissent within the ranks of root because he was literally doing the opposite of their holy mission statement. He talked a big game about caring about the village, but he always chose paths that fostered his own power, even when to the detriment of the village, such as the Uchiha Massacre

Never saw the Root as powerful from an individual standpoint, but more from the idea that these are brainwashed and indoctrinated soldiers who will easily run an ally through if it meant wounding an enemy on the other side.
Instead of giving us all the unwanted filler, what shonen should've done was had kishimoto or someone else use all those episodes to add more to the more to the worldbuilding and go further in depth about subjects and concepts about the naruto universe instead. Details like how hashirama got sage mode, root's dark past, how the sasori killed the 3rd kazekage, or us being given the answers to plotholes, rectons or for the episodes to answer other questions we might have.
in universe we're not exactly sure if people would have assumed he was pulling a ccoup or in some means responsible for hiruzen's death. I don't think the other elders are _that_ stupid, especially after how root was "disbanded" after the Uchiha massacre.

Meaning things were great for almost 40+ years since Hiruzen's tenure. Things got out of hand when he had to fill in Minato's shoes as Hokage. By that time, he was past his prime in terms of leadership skills but still tried to use his experience to manage things.
