Hey just built a bulldozer die myself. I watched this video must have been a dozen times by now. The only thing I was lacking was a milling machine. Just got one for a song and a dance, and man it's opened so many doors, I got so much to learn on it. Thanks for the sweet videos.
One of my favorite parts of your videos is the progression of sweet tools you have acquired. I also have that “problem” and it drives my wife crazy. My latest is a 1986 cnc Bridgeport that i retrofit with a new control system
I just want to compliment you on your camera work. The variety of camera angles, close-ups and the shear number of shots and edits are impressive. Makes your videos interesting to watch. Keep up the good work.
Finally, a YT guy that knows enough about heat treating to teach his followers. A common file can get you by, a set of hardness testing files is better, but a Rockwell tester is best. And,,, paying the price and floor space tells us West Weld is committed to quality. I haven't looked, but I bet used Rockwell testers are cheap and plentiful. Get one!
Thanks for taking the time to film and share. I learn a lot from your videos. You have a very nice setup in your shop and back it up with veteran knowledge. I like the why's and the how's. I like the straight forward approach and some hints of humor. Keep'em coming.
Thanks......get yourself a 3/4" indexable endmill from shars with apkt inserts I find I reach for it the most. its great for bringing parts to size and if your learning burning up inserts is better than expensive endmills.

Awesome filming, editing and machining. Criminal that you don't have 10x as many subscribers. Looking forward to seeing more about the hossfeld bender. That oven looks sweet too.
Nice. Amazing what a couple million in machinery and tools can do. If my shop was that clean and organized, well, it wouldn't be for long. Great skills and knowledge.
Thanks man.....I wish it was a couple million worth......you can get the machine tools for pretty cheap at auctions like a few hundred dollars cheap but usually have to travel a little
@@westweld Just because you bought em cheap, doesn't mean they aren't worth more. I have no less than a quarter million in my business equipment, with depreciation, way lower. But.... to replace stuff, if I have to get right back to work, it's usually new, or close to new. One big item would put a hurting on the finances, everything has gone up so much.
I saw you from your reddit post of you demonstrating this. I LOVE your video editing of this! Very clear, enjoyable to watch, and definitely up there with all the other favorite youtubers that I love to watch. I have subscribed and hope to see more videos from you! Thank you for the great content!
Pre CWR, rail is homogeneous and it’s the type you want for machining. Continuous Welded Rail has a much, much tougher ball (Top) with more carbon, molybdenum and vanadium in it. The web and foot is more akin to mild steel to be a bit more forgiving under load and wild temperature fluctuations. Remember, these are 7 to 15 mile long pieces of continuous rail and both side are never the same length. Why do I know this? I’ve been running trains on it for 20 years now.
Wow! I am really delighted that I found your channel! Like so many others here I watch a large number of machining channels, but missed yours until now. You really offered something for everyone here and your video/editing is excellent. Thanks very much for the effort you put into sharing your work and expertise. I hope your channel grows quickly. Oh thanks so much for making my UA-cam videos look like complete amateur rubbish. I thought the beginning of your video was an ad and then near shit myself laughing when you showed what you were doing and dropped the camera 😂. Like Charles Plowman below I have just picked up my first milling machine, a BP clone, and realise how much I have to learn. Videos like yours really help to show what and how things can be done and what a skilled operator can achieve. It’s so much better than anything you can get from reading books. Thanks so much. I tried to do this exact thing but they got all the track near my place nailed down. It's nailed down good, too. I even went to some fields like you showed and looked for some loose track, but no luck.
Engraving machines, lathes, mills, hell, even drill presses can break the bank on accessories. Nice to keep 500 bucks in your jeans on that setup. Kudos on the worlds cleanest heat treat oven. ✌

I love machining railroad tracks. It is hard - yes, but after i changed to the right tools, i can make som heavy cuts on it. I have produced alot of anvils and hammers out of the material. On my mill i can easily make a 4mm cut with a 80mm cutter. I have also had some that i putt in the 4-jaw on the lathe, and then turned the head on the hammer round. No problem with the right tools. But wonderfull movie you have made here. You just got another subscriber here :-)
Pretty cool man, Ive found railroad track to be around 1070 steel with added manganese, which helps with hardening a little bit. You want to take it a little above non magnetic tho, otherwise you wont get full hardness out of it. I usually let it soak 10-15 seconds more past the non magnetic temp, then quench it in oil. I know you can quench that stuff in water also, but I dont need the stuff that hard usually, lol.
Thanks Chirpy......I didnt show on camera but I tried heat treating that thing like 4 times at different Temps I just couldn't get it above 45 but honestly I'm pretty happy with that.....makes it relatively useful, super tough too. Im gonna look up 1070 and see what the difference is.
I am making dues for a power hammer . Mine did not mill so nicely but my mill is a mill drill. I am going to anneal the track snd try again. Mine was a bear to drill and tap.
Mine was hard to tap also......I noticed when machining it was really inconsistent it would be going good then I'd hit a hard spot so unfortunately I couldn't use powerfeed
