Kenya is the international hub for Africa so you’ll find UDV has an office in Africa where they target the wider African market from Nairobi due to its natural location as a continental hub. East African Breweries Limited EABL. Is where the gin is packaged or distilled.
Viceroy is actually from South Africa - the Van Rijn company (the one you said you don’t know where it is from) is in South Africa. Viceroy is sort of their entry level brand. Their premium brandies (also called Van Rijn) are extremely good. Better than most cognacs.
It's because UDV & EABL are local subsidiaries of Diageo (Majority shareholder (about 51%) and government and citizens own 49%), a multinational with the the products rights. Diageo is the 3rd largest alcoholic beverage company worldwide
Yeah the alcohol effect is huge not just the heat but it's massive effect on mouthfeel it becomes more textured. I was once trying alcohol free wine and just buy adding a little bit of vodka it ended up tasting substantially better, it still had weird flavours because to account for the lack of alcohol they added blackcurrant juice to increase the tartness.
As per market share UDV is the spirit wing for EABL which is the national liquor manufacturer in Kenya DEAGIO portfolio in EABLE could explain why most of the brands are made in Nairobi Kenya. As a Kenyan that could be my take. Bk the Bartender
These types of videos are some of my favorite content among both Educated Barfly and Freepour. I enjoy learning of new exotic spirits from all all aorund the world fermented and flavored with things I've never heard of. I would be interested to see some cocktail videos (on Educated Barfly) with spirits like Feni, Mastiha, Tispouro, Slivovitz, or anything that's never been done before. (Feni would be the most interesting to me personally).
I Totally agree with you Leo!! The Alcohol burn makes the Drink!! It Changes it lots, imagine trying out a Zombie with no Alcohol.. it just doesnt cut it! It changes the experience and texture & when it's not there, you can most definitely tell the difference in my opinion.
I know what you mean about that alcohol burn, but I'm not a particular fan of it and wouldn't really miss it. What I would miss is the mouthfeel of alcohol. It adds a really nice texture, and that varies based on alcohol type.
I have never thought about the burn in that way before. I definitely want to taste the alcohol in my drink and a little burn is nice. But still getting used to whiskey burn since it is a relatively new spirit to me
Regarding the burn: it should have a bite, but not a gnaw. Im not sure what is up with some drinks( beefeater london dry, cheap (w)odka, cheap gin, some types of brandy and whiskey), but in them its a bit too much. For instance, most rums, tequila and some types of brandy and whiskey DONT have that same burn... Compare...idk, garlic and onion burn to raw ginger and horse radish and hot pepper. Id prefer the garlic soft burn...
What ABV is the Kenyan Gilbey's? The British made stuff available around here is only 37,5 % alcohol and hence would probably be a bad choice for replicating historical cocktails for that reason, I'm afraid.
Doesn't Luxardo Maraschino and Tanqueray also have the same plastic cap you complained about here and the previous Kenyan booze video? Or maybe it's just not what I think it is. Haven't seen it anywhere else though.
@@freepour Doesn't it? I had a bottle years and years ago which I remember having one, but it seems like my memory served me wrong on this one. I've no problem with your complaint though, the cap is pretty lame.
Id recommend Procera Exquisite premium Gin brewed in Kenya, check out their youtube and website, it has won several global awards Like San Francisco World Spirits Competition Gold Medal 2019, 2020 International Wine and Spirits Awards London Gold Medal 2020 - 96 points Michelangelo Awards 2019 Gin Trophy #1 out of 124 Entries
To say a producer puts neutral grain spirit into malt whiskey because it has too much flavor is giving way too much credit to the maker. :D The only purpose neutral grain has is to cut down the cost. A producer actually concerned about flavor will put actual grain whiskey instead. ;)
Am a Kenyan and i cant take this cheap poisons..i once had Gilbeys and i thought i was going die of some pathetic illness!! and that was like 3 shots. However please try Kenyan Original Gins and we can have a conversation, am planning to try that.

Was anyone else concerned at 13:50 when part of Leandro's head phase shifted into the 5th dimension?
😂
I felt sad for him. I alredy knew the bottle. Its EVIL! We avoid it in Kenya.
Hi Leandro, Kenyan here. EABL is actually just Diageo. I do agree about Gilbeys as well, I've always found it to be a "boring" Gin.
True! The alcohol burn is totally add to the experience or the mouth feel. I think that’s why some people prefer higher abv whisky or spirits.

Great idea! I like the idea of doing tastings and cocktail tutorials on Borge Freepour and Educated Barfly
"I'm sort of scared to try this, but fantastically curious" 🤣🤣
I swore off gin for a good 8 years or so thanks to Gilbey's.
When you first said "UDV" I thought you were pronouncing "Eau-de-vie" with the most American accent ever lol
Try MURATINA, a traditional Kikuyu drink
I thought the buzz was part of the pleasure😅
Cool stuff guys. My conclusion at the end is that if I want to know how a bathtub gin taste in a drink, I will grab this one. Hahaha
LOL. It’s better than Bathtub Gin!

Nice video.
I think that I was the only one who said that Amarula is the best.

Tanqueray doesn’t and luxardo does. The complaint stands though LOL

Also, you're 100% right about Hunters. It's absolutely dreadful!

I hate hunter's choice with passion...
Horrible not even close to a whiskey. I don't even know much about whiskeys.
@@marcooos9874 It's just flavored vodka. Not real whiskey
As soon as I learn that it is African made it becomes cheap in terms of quality. But that's just me, I don't know what's wrong with me. 🤣
