If 4 thread serging is a durable stitch, why do people always sew a regular stitch, in addition to it, on the sewing machine, when seeing wovens? But then don't add that regular sewing machine stitch with knits?

4 thread stitches are both durable AND stretchy, which is good for knits since they also stretch, but not good for most wovens, which don't typically have stretch. So you might see someone using a 4 thread serge to finish the seams on a woven fabric, but the actual seam itself would be sewn with a regular straight stitch. If you sew a seam on a woven with a 4 thread serge, this type of thing can happen: www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/w80f97/overlockserge_seam_on_woven_fabric_why_is_the/
