When I let Joel film with my Z4MR at the start of the year, I got a chance to sit down and chat with his dad for a bit. Seriously one of the nicest guys I've ever spoken to. The guys also had some really interesting cars in his life, so was having an awesome chat about some of the cars we'v both owned in the past!

Great vlogs Joel. I have watched a few and you have gained a subscriber. Cars bring out the best in people especially if you are a car lover. I have a few supercars but the Z4 is just a basic timeless beauty that's so much fun. My search is for black on black like yours with hopefully an M package. If you can do a review on that it would be welcomed. As I said before you are a natural at vloging, and you have so much fun at it. Joel just something I noticed in your video of your dad's car,the roof went up really slow when he closed it with the key,might be worth checking the hydrolic fluid in the roof motor,should be going up a lot quicker than that.
Thanks David, he did have his motor refurbed and relocated to the boot, although his roof has always been quite slow!

Dan Allnatt haha, why would you want to do that..? ;) I don’t think you can do this, although don’t know for sure!
If you get a remap done the limiter will be removed and a higher redline
@Thunderous One A remap on a standard M like mine, would not make any real power gains, as BMW really did get the Z4M tuned to the safe limits that the S54 can manage. From talking with a good number of Z4M owners, the only way to get more power out of the S54 is to go with forced induction, typically a supercharger. The average figure quoted to me, was around 500bhp , with standard internals. While the car has 343bhp , it's only got 269lb ft which is the cars biggest weakness.
The only power gains I could make NA, would be by installing the CSL style air box, but then it's only around a 10-15bhp improvement, which is too small for me to even feel (typically you need around 10% or more change before you can really feel it). The one big plus with going forced induction, is the torque figures and profile, are improved. The S54 needs to be revved so much to get it going, which if the engine is not properly warm, can lead to excessive wear and if not looked after, cause it to let go.
Before I owned my Z4M, I had an Impreza P1, which I had spent a lot of money on, as I blew the original engine and got my hands on effectively a 500bhp race engine, that I had detuned to 323bhp 330lb ft. When you hit boost, it really gave a sense of speed, as it would push you back into the seat. With my Z4M, the power delivery is so smooth, that it is so easy to be well over the speed limit and not realise. The one main area the Alpina Roadster trumps the M, is in the torque. The 3.4 Alpina engine has it's peak torque much lower down and is about 300lb ft , which is the perfect amount for an E85's chassis (the E86 Coupe can handle way more due to just how stiff it's shell is).
From asking around on the two main Z4/Z car UK forums, a full remap that unlocks the extra 500rpm and removes the limiter, costs around £1000+ , depending on the quality of the tuner. Here in Oxford, the cost would be on the higher end, as we're not in an area known for it's support.enjoyment of fun sports cars, so there are few places I could go. Bar performance improvements, there has been Z4M owners, who have been able to take lines of code from the E46 M3 car control unit and place them on the Z4M's (even though the Z4M basically has E46 M3 CSL parts, the units are different models) and get cool features that allow a track mode with the stability control, as it's either on or off in the Z4M. The "ON" mode is pretty much the lowest setting with an E46 M3's, as I am able to get the rear end to step out, even with ESP and TC still fully on.
Since Joel filmed with my Z4M at the start of the year, I now have a better grasp on the real world MPG figures with my car. On longer motorway runs, going around 70mph, I am able to get over 30MPG, without having to try that hard. On average I am getting about 24-28mpg in my car, which I am happy with. One of my tyres has a small leak in it and when I noticed and fixed the problem, suddenly I went from 16MPG up to 28MPG, which just shows how big an effect correct tyre pressures can have.
After owning my Z4M-Roadster for 6 months now, there is very little I want to change about the outright performance. It would be nice if I could have a more dramatic overrun with the exhausts and possibly getting cruse control retro fitted. I just wish it was a bit more dramatic with the acceleration, so you got pushed back into the seat, like my Impreza P1 did. I would like the Sport button to actually change more than just the throttle response (mind you, the sharper throttle really turns the car into a savage beast), if it would change the weight of the steering and make more crackles come out the pipes, I would be happy.
@@itsjoel I would love to try doing a V-Max run in Germany or at Bruntingthorpe on their main runway. As mentioned by others, having the extra 500RPM would be a cool addition, but as things are now, if I redline in 2nd gear, I am already going over 80mph!

Interesting tool! I purchased an ‘03 Z4 last summer and it runs beautifully. I do have a question regarding the Carly reader as there seems to be very mixed reviews on it. To program some of the features you describe is it required to purchase the upgraded unit and a yearly plan? It seems that once you have put in the new features, how many more can there be?

How fast would you say your roof or your dad's roof goes up or down?
I got a module installed to have one touch roof up and down so I don't have to hold the button down. It also allows for remote roof controls.
One thing I don't like about carly is the annual subscription. I got an Obdeleven device (for my a4) and they offer pay per coding "app" and they offer free credits too. No annual subscriptions. But actual line coding cost 30 bucks, one time payment though.

Can you code the car to default to Sport mode on?
Be nice if you could set Sport to default on. Steering is horrible with it off. Won't be buying Carly though, not now they charge annually for it :-(

Joel, can you explain a little further the auto vs intermittent wipers? Thought I just had the rain sensing and adjustability of the sensitivity. Were you saying I also have non rain sensing intermittent function? Thanks!
If you have rain sensing wipers (standard on uk cars I think) then you're correct, the switch on the stalk just changes the sensitivity - this does kind of alter the interval though, as the more sensitive the more wipes. Top tip however, if you DISABLE the rain sensor in Carly, the wipers become standard intermittent and the stalk does just change the wiping interval! (my rain sensor sticky pad is all gooey, so the sensor doesn't work - standard intermittent wipers are far better anyway)

How hard is it to make a manual top an electric top? The roadster I want comes with all the bells and whistles but for some dumb reason BMW thought it was better to put a manual top 🤦🏾♀️

@@itsjoel Just found your channel after searching for a new car and deciding on a Z4. It's good content for someone who as not owned one before. I just need to know the bad things, and if I can fix them before I decide if it's right for me, and the Z4 seems like a generally solid car with a few things to check before buying. Downside is there are not many close to where I live, so I'm gonna have to be patient for the right one to appear.
Does anybody know if the code will still work even with my convertible handle attached? Or do I have to remove handle. I’m not too sure

It's Joel Hi Joel, I meant the latch handle under the convertible (located in between top central interior light pit) to manually put the top down

Yes, it can be restored and reset at any point

m m No since Aux is when you plug in a aux cord or cable in to the car the only way to get that is if the car comes with it or you install it. Now if you mean Bluetooth where it wirelessly connects to your phone you’d need a radio that has Bluetooth connectivity if your current radio doesn’t have that you can easily replace it with one that does.
