- New nurse time management tips and advice: I will discuss some new nurse tips and tricks for time management you can use as a new nurse. Many new nurses struggle with time management issues during the first six months on the job. The reason is because most new nurse graduates are trying to develop a nursing routine that works for them while trying to learn how to be a nurse.

It can be overwhelming for the new nurse and they may find themselves feeling like you don't have enough time to get their job done. Some signs and symptoms of time management issues can include: rushing to get everything done at the end of the shift, forgetting to complete tasks, clocking out late all the time, never getting breaks, always needing help, and feeling so overwhelmed with the job that you want to quit. Some tips to help you become better with time management include: asking the right questions in report, creating a sheet to help you keep track of your day, set goals of when things should be completed, try to streamline medication administration times, take it hour-by-hour and don't think about it all at once, and know that experience helps with time management. I have ocd and it is hard to time manage. Any suggestions you are my role model
I'm about a month in to my first nursing job and the last three shifts have made me seriously question whether or not I can do this. Hour by hour is a good way to look at things though, thanks for all the help :)
Teared up watching this! I’ve been working at a nursing home for a month now, and honestly it’s been so incredibly difficult. I have literally every single one of those signs of poor time management. It’s horrible. I often have to switch roles (med giving, charge nurse) because of poor staffing which makes an 8 hour shift a 12 hour one quite easily. I’m literally known as the nurse who takes forever. It sucks, especially because I have very little experience and try to tend to patient’s needs which aren’t always emergent (and I’ve learned the hard way). Everything takes me forever. Some one always needs to speak to me. I want to give up every day but watching this have me a spark of hope. Being a new nurse is no joke. This has been so far the most difficult, depressing month of my life. But... 🤷🏽♀️
Just starting my new job as a nurse in a nursing home. Very hard and challenging. I have asked for help with a knowledgeable nurse and nice person, who had helped me in a better way than my own assigned trainer. Find a person in your work who you can learn from and this will help you to learn more time management. It doesn’t matter if you take more time than others, do it right and speed will come with every day practice. Good luck to you. You got this.

I Definitely can relate. It is very stressful, especially when you don't want your patients waiting for someone to help them to the bathroom, when you are already behind. I hate for patients to hold their pee, so I'm always helping them, if my CNA is busy, but then they leave on time, and then I'm eat struggling to finish my tasks, and always the LAST nurse to finish.
This is me, one month into my first job and I say to myself, how did i get myself into this??? I really am sorry for myself. Cos what??
Working as a CNA during school has helped me tremendously throughout school to get better with time management as a student and become comfortable with my role. It also helps with communication (with patient and team)! I am graduating in May and just got offered my first full time job as an RN :) will be using these tips as i transition from student to nurse! Thank you
take hour by hour thats the key. you should set very short term goals each shift until its all muscle memory...😁 great tips mam.

Im an agency nurse and as such am often working in a new ward every day. Its hard. My time management is a real challenge for me. If you aren't familiar with the ward it really adds to the problem.
How it's going with you now? Still an agency nurse?
I am also an agency nurse who just started a new assignment and it is a struggle to keep up. Also, there is no organization and the nurses there are not that friendly. It would be nice if the other nurses would offer more but I suppose I have to deal with this mess. Hopefully, it will get better soon.

I love watching your videos. I must admit that I have never seen this one before it was assigned to me as part of a supplemental assignment to achieve our preceptorship hours we do not get due to the COVID-19 outbreak starting the week our preceptorships started. We are still on track to graduate in May and begin working this summer. This is a great video...I struggle with time management as a student, I can't even imagine how much harder it is as a baby nurse.
That's what I did, I worked as a nurse assistant for a year, and it helped me a lot.
This video was extremely helpful as a senior level nursing student in clinical. Tech responsibilities are one thing,, but adding in charting and administering meds + everything else has been a game changer! I struggle some days just keeping up with just 2 patients if something unexpected happens and I know something has to change with my rourine. Glad I came across this!❤️
Thank you so much for making this video for us, and for letting me know it was posted. "Hour by hour" is a new perspective for me, which makes so much sense. Also, tackling surprises during report (lightbulb moment) 🤔. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way about being too scared to speak up because sometimes you don't get the best shift report (aka surprises all day = falling behind on tasks). As a new nurse resident, I tend to forget that I'm no longer in the student role and that I'm among colleagues that's going to take some getting used to... but the more comfortable I feel the more confident I become to ask questions...I also thank you for the encouragement that things will get better and that we're not fighting a hopeless battle.

I am usually an organized person; however, now that I am on the nursing student side of things..I am learing as an ER Tech to do the most important task that the nurse's ask of me. New nurse here, currently struggling with this. I'm 2 months in and have been told I need to do my tasks faster. I feel like i'm moving fast but certain things take me longer not to mention abnormal bp's, high sugars, and other things I have to address in between. How long do you take to do your assessments? and med pass? I work nights and by the time report is done it's 7:30 then I have to do assessments, plan of care, and meds, this is the usual goal unless I have earlier meds before 10 or a new admission or discharge. I would appreciate any feedback! Thank you

Thank you so much for this helpful video! Im a new medical-surgical nurse and currently on my 5th month. Im guilty of clocking out late; sometimes i extend for 2 hours to complete the paperworks that really take time even though we handle 6-8 patients per nurse.
My colleagues tell me that im slow at performing bedside skills and it takes a lot of my time. Is it normal that im still adjusting with time management? Also, i got sad when a colleague told me that im not improving in time management and prioritization. But looking back at the day I started, i think i am gradually improving. Considering that this is my first job, im still adjusting and learning to handle constructive criticisms gracefully. I have realized that i just need to focus on my work and strengths:)

Sometimes i ask myself if this is really for me; but i committed myself to nursing!❤ seeing my patients happy and contented with my service compensates for the criticisms i receive and my perceived weakness.
Hello Sabrina :) Thank you so much for sharing your experience as a new nurse because I know others on here will definitely relate with what you are going through, and it will make them feel better to know other new nurses are struggling with this as well.
It is VERY NORMAL to be experiencing time management issues at 5 months. You are still learning the ropes and 6-8 patients are a lot of to take care of as a new nurse, especially when you consider paperwork, medication passes, following out doctors orders, admissions, discharges, and doing the normal nursing routines that you are not totally familiar with (which is why it takes you more time to complete at this time point). It seems like 12 hours would be enough time but really you use every minute to get your job done.
After time goes by you will be faster and improve on how you juggle 6-8 patients. Please don't get discouraged because with time you are going to get better with time management. Sometimes colleagues forget how hard it was to be a new nurse, so try to brush off their criticism. Now, if you are still struggling with time management at a year, then you may want to really analyze what the problem is...it may not be you but the unit you are working on...is it understaffed a lot? do you have help? are the patient assignments fair...in that you have a variety of patients rather than all contact isolations, total cares etc. Sometimes shift leaders fail to assess patient needs and assign nurses really heavy loads, when "hard" patient assignment can be broken up so everyone receives an equal load. So, always look at those things before you question if nursing is for you. If you love your patients and find satisfaction with helping others, you are made to be a nurse. Hang in there...it will get better. I hope that helps :) I hope you have a Happy New Year!

Not me having all of the issues listed in the beginning 😂. Just got off orientation and it’s tough.
Been working 2 and 1/2 yrs in private duty and STILL struggling with my charting! I have so much difficulty with getting back on task after being interrupted, and when you're in someone's house with their grandbaby (it's always the grandmas, lol), they see you pull out the tablet to chart and suddenly they have questions about things or maybe they just want to talk. But I can't talk and write at the same time. Plus it feels like I'm doing something wrong if I'm staring at a screen while my patient's abuela is talking to me.
