Catastrophe of Life~~~ Love it. It came out about 5? yrs ago. He has so many!!!! Love his writing. He is always about life...
Easily my favorite Mellencamp song.
This was my brother's favorite Mellencamp song. We lost him today to cancer so this must have been some kind of Providence that you reacted to this song today. It is one of John Mellencamp's best and I'm loving how much you love this song too. ✨❤️
😥💔🙏🙏❣️
May his memory be a blessing...💜
My sympathies 💞 life has a funny way of reaching us when we need it the most
Oh wow, deepest condolences to you and your family. May he sleep in eternal peace🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽❤️
So sorry for your loss!
Everything about John Mellencamp is amazing. Listen, I was born January 1970 so I was a pre-teen/teen in the 80s which by the way is the best time to be that! Anyway, John Mellencamp was big in my house because my mom was crazy about him so we listened to him a lot! The man is brilliant. By the way, I was 17 when they filmed this.
every day man singing about every day people... it just don't get no better.
Rain on the Scarecrow is another great song from JM.
That one always makes me cry
I love the fact that John enjoys it so much, continuous smile, dancing, FUN He would be a blast to see. AND John can dance!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh FYI his original name is Mellencamp but at the start of this career he used Cougar, most likely to be kinda a stage name, then went back to his original name, which I love. His first known hit, "I need a lover", is amazing. All uphill since then.
The "Cougar" thing was forced on him.....he hated it.
@@thorfinsky1427 Good. I can't see him liking that
Paper in Fire is my absolute favorite song of his. Ya gotta ch-ch-check IT out
I think this is my favourite of John's songs. That violin did it for me.
John Mellencamp wrote the best blue collar music ever written. His music really was a voice for the working class.. a voice for real American's who love their home and family.
There are tons of great John Mellencamp songs. He's a great songwriter and performer. I'd like to suggest a song from his later years, "Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)". No one ever mentions it but it is one of my favorites (of many favorites of his!).
BTW, he dropped the name "Cougar" (long story as to why he used it and subsequently dropped it). 😊
My favorite John Mellencamp song. When the violin breaks in, in the middle does it for me. The whole song is memorable. Thank you John
There are so many more you haven’t done. Lonely Ol Night, I need a lover, Ain’t even done with the night, Rain on the Scarecrow, Crumbling Down, Paper in fire are all amazing songs.
How could you NOT like JCM? He was one of my Idols back in the 90's and thought I went to heaven when I met him at a CD signing! Always LOVE his music and his Don't give a crap attitude, just being true to himself. Btw, do you know how much he supports the American farmers in this country? He has been a part of "Farm Aid" along with Willie Nelson, Neil Young and others for years! He was born in a small town, Seymour, Indiana, and still lives there........Never one for the Hollywood scene and is just a regular guy who supports the working class people....
One of my favorite songs ..especially from John Mellencamps Music Library's many tracks.
Thank you so much.
I think the best way to describe John Mellancamp is Heartland Rock. He's always been one of my favorites.
JCM - One of America's finest and a folk hero. Respect.
Will somebody please say the man can move!! What a performer on stage!!!
NEXT Mellencamp -- PAPER IN FIRE !!! Rocking harmonica all the way through!!
The man is the TRUTH. He sings it. He lives it. He expects it. It's just his life.
Love this song. Both John Mellenkamp and Bruce Springsteen have a knack for Americana
So you want more Mellencamp? How about a peppy pop/rock tune with a positive messages and it's a duet with India.Arie. A hidden gem in IMHO, something a little different than what you're used with the Coug'. The song is "Peaceful World", check it out!
BTW, loving you guys, great job!
Amber and Jay, I so appreciated your comments on “Check It Out”. I think it is Mellencamp’s masterpiece. Amber, you mentioning that you are in the gold, the best times of your life right now, brought tears to my eyes. God bless you and your family.
There's the old adage about how nobody on their deathbed ever says, "I should have spent more time at the office (or work in general)." Gotta take advantage of the time available with your kids now, since they grow up in a blink.
You will never get tired of John. He’s got an endless supply of songs like this. Still waiting for Crumbling Down, Rain on the Scarecrow, Authority Song and R.O.C.K in the USA. It’s so cool because I get nostalgic listening to his music because it just takes me back to the time these songs were constantly in the radio. You guys get nostalgic thinking about reminiscing in the future. That’s pretty heavy. It hasn’t even happened yet and you already feel it! Amber straight up had me tearing tonight. 😢❤
Minutes to Memories
Good picks. Also Rumbleseat.
@@brianmcmaster5112 YES!!!
Paper in Fire and so many more
Rain on the Scarecrow is his most poignant, but I can't listen to it without sobbing. My late Dad was a farm supplier during the crisis and my family lost almost everything at that time. God Bless the farmers. Thank you, John.
Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s while "honing an almost startlingly plainspoken writing style" that, starting in 1982, yielded a string of Top 10 singles, including "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.", "Paper in Fire", and "Cherry Bomb". He has amassed 22 Top 40 hits in the United States. In addition, he holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit number one on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, with seven. Mellencamp has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one. His latest album of original songs, Strictly a One-Eyed Jack, was released on January 21, 2022. Mellencamp has sold over 30 million albums in the US and over 60 million worldwide. - wikipedia
Can't get enough of John. His music will always stand the test of time. I am always transported back to the good ole days. So much feeling and depth !!
Yes yes and yes
"paper and fire", "scarecrow", and "R.O.C.K in the USA" are three songs you definitely need to hear. Some of his best in my opinion
they are 3 great ones, i would love to see them react too as well...also "When Jesus Left Birmingham" is great.
Minutes to Memories
Agreed! These three are a must, especially Paper and Fire!
I love the first line of this song: “A million young poets screaming out their words to a world full of people just living to be heard.” Oof. That is profound. Thanks for doing this one :)
At one point in his career he went by John Cougar Mellencamp. He now a days shares his life with actress Meg Ryan.
Check out Paper In Fire, Ain't Even Done With The Night and Wild Night that was also done by Van Morrison.
Probably my favorite Mellencamp song- the lyrics are amazing and the music really hooks you.
John Mellencamp seems like the guy you'd want as a next door neighbor.
I first heard this song when I was in my mid thirties raising our two children. Now I’m 71 and a grandpa. It is still a poignant reminder of how quickly life goes by. We have those core family moments. On Father’s Day my son called me and told me how he followed my example in a moment with his daughter. Check it out!
Adding Lisa Germano's talents to the band made his music even better, even the older songs before she joined, especially ones like Pink Houses.
I have seen mellencamp 4 times here in Australia dating back to the ‘lonesome jubilee’ album, he is the 2nd best live performer I have ever seen coming 2nd to our Australian legend jimmy barnes
Two quotes of his I like to use are: "An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind" (Minutes to Memories) and "Without hope, without love you've got nothin but pain, just makes a man not give a damn" (Empty Hands). So many good songs. I was going to start listing them but I'll just say, pick one, you can't wrong.
He is an amazing storyteller.
I was not only at this concert but I dated his cousin Paula. THIS WAS AWESOME!!!!
John Cougar - Crumblin Down - Hurts so Good - Authority Song
I heard someone say that a Violin sings and a Fiddle makes you dance.
Another great hit from the album “Lonesome Jubilee” along with “Cherry Bomb” which you previously reviewed. More wonderful memories of 1987-88 😀 My favorite is “The Authority Song”- you will love it!
Simply put - Just a great song...
A mellencamp hug for us all. Morning joy given. Ty amber n jay
He was my Moms favourite artist. I grew up listening to all his music. This is my favourite song. I’ve also seen him twice in concert, best concert I’ve ever been to. ❤
Mellencamp had some lesser known songs in the late 90s check out I’m not running anymore and Your Life is now
Mellencamp is under-appreciated and is one of the greatest songwriters of our time.
'Minutes to Memories'
'Key West Intermezzo'
'Save Some Time to Dream'
'Rain on the Scarecrow'
'Between a Laugh and a Tear'
'Grandview'
'Authority Song'
'Full Catastrophe of Life'
'I'm Not Running Anymore'
'A Ride Back Home'
Too many to list but that's a start.
Yes, yes a thousand times yes!!! My favorite John song...
Every Time You Go Away - PAUL YOUNG 1983 one of the most famous 80s pop romance songs that the moment it starts your in for something special one of the 80s greatest voices highly recommend it
He is one of my most favourite singer/songwriter/poet that God has given to all of us. Love this song. But I love so many of his little real life stories which flow through his songs!
So many good tunes! He does a great live performance, too. Saw him in Kansas City many years ago. They played through a thunderstorm in an outdoor venue to give the people what they wanted.
Amber, when you spoke “our core memories”, about the little, but vitally important, things in a person’s life, I was really touched.
One of the best reactions I've heard, and one of the best songs ever.
John reinvented himself at least 3 times 8ver the decades when it comes to his music.
I had such a crush on Lisa Germano, the violin player, back in the day. If you get a chance, watch some of Mellencamp's songs from MTV Unplugged. It's REALLY good.
He was live in Indianapolis Indiana, and he’s an Indiana boy!! He understands what’s really important in life!! ❤
The Lonesome Jubilee is Mellencamp's best work, in my opinion. Love the accordion and fiddle-driven sound that runs throughout the album.
Mine, too, Greg Fagan.
Scarecrow, lonesome jubilee, and my fave big daddy. The perfect trifecta
35 years later since this song was released on the "Lonesome Jubilee" album and we still don't have a better understanding. John Mellencamp is the best artist in my opinion at evoking emotion in an individual.
If you haven't, Paper In Fire is freakin great!!!
Never think your dreams are small, having someone who loves you, children who love you is extremely important. Thank God that you can have someone who loves you in this crazy world.
John started his career as a greasy haired rebel and progressed his music to being about Americana. Heartland rock if you will. He co-founded Farm Aid in 1985 with Willie Nelson and Neil Young to help struggling farmers. All around talented musician and great guy.
To me he’s just an all American singer, songs of a simpler life , love of country, and where he comes from. Jmo
PAPER AND FIRE is a great song, John is a very diverse person he also is a great painter
John is a true American Treasure. Wish we could all just live in the picture he paints with his voice.
All of John’s songs are about life!!
"Paper In Fire" is another fiddle-driven hit off the "Lonesome Jubilee" album that gave you Check It Out and Cherry Bomb. Mellencamp tells wonderful stories, and while it's not a hit single, "Minutes To Memories" is probably one of his most amazing songs.
You can't have a real Midwest rock group without a fiddle and an accordion. John hits my 'feels' hard with his lyrics. Mellencamp is among the greatest...
Don't forget the hammered dulcimer and his ability to use the word "escrow" in lyrics...awesomeness
One of John Mellencamp's songs you have to get to is 'Paper in Fire.' Check it out! 🙂
John Cougar Mellencamp is one of the best
My favourite Mellencamp song.
He does offer a darker take on the plight of farmers with his great song, "Rain on the Scarecrow." There's also "Crumblin' Down" or a song that might be a Sunday pump-up song since it represents defiance--"The Authority Song." All three would be great reactions to watch.
You need to listen to "Paper in Fire". I think both of you will love it.
You 2 are the future generations he is singing about having a better understanding.
So glad you reacted to this song as I haven't heard it in years and always loved it. I love the fiddle parts -- to me it has an Irish vibe in this song. I also love the accordion and guitar. This song is truly a masterpiece from beginning to end. I saw John perform in 1983 when he was the opening act for Heart. I sat on the aisle and at one point he went into the audience right by me. I have never forgotten how absolutely striking his blue eyes are. I saw him a second time in the late 90s with a good friend. We used to drive around playing his music and singing along. Good times.
That one line was actually.."You can't tell your best buddy that you love him".
Tongue and cheek statement about foolish pride.. when it comes to expressing love.
LOL..... Just wait until you get those grandkids will start those memories and feelings all over again. Life is good!!!
I’m still waiting for “Authority Song”…. 🙏😊
CORE MEMORIES??? - OK - you said it! You MUST do Alan Jackson's song "REMEMBER WHEN" - guaranteed tears but amazingly beautiful!!
john did the music thing begrudgingly. He's an intensely private guy. He spends most of his time in his art studio and he is truly a very talented artist. He has one of my favorite quotes. He said "I have but only so many moons left, and I intend not to spend them getting old."
I had dubbed this song to my Skydiving video, when playing back the video there was some accidental timing issues between the video and music. When he sang ,” I got to say hello to my neighbor “ a bird flew past me in the skydiving video, and yes I questioned my behavior when I jumped out of perfectly good aircraft. Every time I hear this song, I think of that video and my youth , when I thought I was immortal! Now a senior citizen,Where did the time go??
I know you two love story songs and Mellencamp does them great. I highly suggest that you react to his song "Minutes to Memories". Its about a young man on a long bus trip with an old man he meets that tells him about his life and times. Great song.
"Minutes to Memories".....great song, great story.
"Days turn to minutes and minutes to memories,
Life sweeps away the dreams that we had planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up, and tough it out, and be the best you can."
Everlasting Love - HOWARD JONES 1989 this song is awesome it's got some beautiful sounds that just go very well with the singers romantic and emotional pop voices great song of the last decade of the 80s
Thank you!!!
I was there!! Two rows to the right of the stage!!!
Always amazing!!👏👏
That’s awesome. I saw him at Giants Stadium in NJ on this tour. So great!
@@petercourtien4581 I have seen him 8 times, most of them in the old Market Square Arena. Being from a small town 20 minutes south of Indy his music really hit home!
I was at this concert. What a great show! Grew up 30 miles from him - good ol' Hoosier boy.
I was too
My favorite♥I love John Mellencamp.
Along with Willie Nelson and Neil Young organized the First Farm Aid in 1985
Back in the mid eighties (probably early ‘86), my Bryan Adams cassette got ruined (you know😅). Instead of buying it again, I decided to buy Scarecrow, and then I got Lonesome jubilee (released in’87) and then went to the concert in LA. Great songs.
Just feel good music! They don't make music like this anymore it's sad.
Mellencamp is a true legend and the best thing is you’ve barely scratched the surface
1987 is peak JM and I would listen to Paper In Fire or Cherry Bomb.
You guys are on a roll!! LOVE Mellencamp. Aside from this one, I'd have to say Minutes to Memories; Rain on the Scarecrow, What if I came knockin'; and rumbleseat are my faves, but they are ALL good. Hurt So Good came out when I was in middle school, and I saved my allowance and went out and bought the album. That was back when he was called John Cougar.
Stuff like this and Seger are known as heartland rock.
I just said if you like story songs,do Minutes to Memories
My very favorite mellencamp song! Listen to the studio version, there's no difference live!
The older I get, the more I love this song. I am 34 but have listened to him as long I can remember. Always loved his stuff but now that I really listen to the lyrics, it makes his songs even better.
I think you guys hit the nail on the head...life, is found within those "core memories". It's not about how big your house is, what kind of job you have, or the car you drive. None of those matter. Life is seeing your children grow, learn, laugh. Its from their first steps, to the steps they take, as you walk them down the aisle. Letting them go, knowing you did all you could, to give them the best life possible, and to carry on your teachings and wisdom. To continue the legacy of life.
*Alan Jackson has a song that describes it perfectly. It's called "Remember When". If you react to this, trust me, you'll "both" need to keep the tissues nearby! 😊❤
This is my favorite Mellencamp song of all time, bar none. That long note on the fiddle that breaks the pause.... chills, every time.
Mine too!
Got to see this tour live. No pyro, no flashing lights, no lasers. Just the man, his band, and their songs. I'll never forget it.
This is actually a very deep song lyrically. He is telling how we are missing the deeper things in relationships due to the our fears and busyness. “You CAN’T tell your best buddy that you love him.” “Sleeping with our backs to the ones we love.”
“ future generations…I hope they have a better understanding..”
Authority song is a banger by him
The violin player is my cousin. she also plays the harp. John always Want it to end racism. You are the best music reactors on. I also want to say that back in them days. The country loved black musicians like Earth wins fire and heat wave.
"Tell ourselves we're still the young lions," one of my favorite lyrics ever.
Top notch rock and roll. John has got the it that only the great ones have!
That's those down-home values nurtured in the heartland we so love about John Mellencamp.
