i used windows until very recently. i think all the years i used windows i might have purchased a copy only once. in my lifetime i have used windows 3.1 and 3.11, windows 95, windows 98, windows 2000 pro, windows XP, windows ME (a very short period of time, it was junk), windows 7, windows vista, and windows 10. i gave microsoft very little of my money for windows, i think i bought more copies of Microsoft flight simulator LOL. im now running fedora 40 and KDE desktop on my AMD ryzen 5 3500 and 16 GB of ram. it runs fantastic
WSL n WSL2 could work against windows too. It could draw more windows users to try out Linux, and later onto the real thing, the real Linux environment.
As a developer point of view, i think this does not devalue Linux being on the Microsoft store but rather shows how powerful linux can be. It can run on basically anything and is there another operating system this flexible? I dont think so. And how sad it is for Microsoft not being able to get rid of Linux even though they want it so bad. They had to put Linux into their shell to be able to keep developers from going away. Also it does not make sense for non developers to use it just for trying Linux out. A lot of features that come with a real linux is not included.
so they just run linux kernel along their own kernel?how does it work & do they want to port linux only apps to windows?why would bin-dows do such a hypocrisy
@@dinozaurpickupline4221 The WSL kernel is located in the Windows folder (somewhere in SXS I believe). It is then going to be started using HyperV. That's why WSL can start up so fast - it doesn't have a boot loader and (normally) no init system. Recent updates on Win11 actually contain systemd but that's a completely different point. What I'm saying is, a normal Linux VM would start the BIOS, then the boot loader, then the kernel (which is located in the VM disk), then the init system. A WSL VM starts the BIOS (or whatever HyperV has), then loads the kernel from the Windows drive, then drops you right into the default shell (mostly bash). So it's skipping boot loader + init system (again, before recent updates - you have to enable systemd manually anyway so my point is still relevant). It uses a HyperV network device, too, so networking doesn't need drivers or services either.
Anytime Microsoft partners with a company, you should panic. Former employees who worked for Microsoft in the 90s have admitted that the only reason they partnered with Sega was to get as much R&D from them as they could and sabotage their marketshare. Compare the Dreamcast controller to the OG Duke Xbox controller. There's almost no differences outside of the vmu slot being replaced with a giant xbox logo.
Wow. That sounds about right. From making the software for the Sega Dreamcast to taking Sega's place in the console wars... Microshaft was a cancer in the 1990s.
Well no, there is no such thing as "looking too much" into something, as long as you keep focused and objective, you SHOULD look as far as you can. The work you do is priceless, and we are very grateful for it.
Linux videos like this are doing more harm to Linux than Microsoft ever could, instead of constantly bashing Microsoft concentrate on promoting Linux as it just comes across as annoying and petty!!
WSL 1 and 2 were ALWAYS aimed at developers. That's why you either have to enter "wsl --install" in PowerShell with Admin privileges or enable specific Windows features in a specific order, or use DISM for that. They don't present WSL as a feature for day to day Windows users. You actually HAVE TO KNOW that it's there and how to install it. Maybe the Microsoft Store does present it as a feature, but who the hell uses that anyways? But I digress. Either way, as a software engineer who has to use Windows at work, WSL is a heaven sent for me to develop on. WSL will NEVER "destroy" native Linux, it simply can't because it's a frikken HyperV VM (rather optimized nonetheless). No HyperV stuff EVER "destroyed" anything yet. WSL is a "Windows Subsystem" - it will only be relevant to Windows and native Linux won't get a single scratch from it. It might, however, increase interest in Linux native for all that I can see... Please stop spreading BS! It's not "evil", it's not "destroying" anything, it's JUST a special little something that's hidden from "normal" PC use and PRIMARILY AIMED AT DEVELOPERS. Has always been. Will always be. Period.
I develop a cross platform embedded library and I use WSL2 to be able to run the unit tests on Linux, with GCC and Clang. It's a hell of a lot easier than running a Linux VM under VMWare or VirtualBox, and especially dual booting. I do my main development with Visual Studio on Windows. It's only relatively recently that mainstream embedded development tools have started to be ported to Linux, so most places will stick with what they, and the developers, are familiar with. I use WSL to ensure compatibility between Windows and Linux development platforms.
i’m going to have to defend WSL here, i’m only 23 so bare that in mind. about 2 years ago I wasn’t really into Linux until at university i was introduced to WSL and man i loved the development experience on Linux which has now got me into making Linux my primary OS. the initial barrier of entry of dual booting was enough to push me away previously. so making Linux this accessible is a positive in my experience.
I remember micro-shaft doing their app's back from windows 8. Of course they said it's easier to find app's in one place, they were optimized to run better, and they were safe from viruses. I tried their version of VLC media player, it seemed like a light version and would constantly freeze up on me. The tracking issues are ridiculous.
I mean, Microsoft had such a monopoly that there was a parody FMV game called Microshaft Winblows 98. Instead of the tag line "where do you want to go today?", it was "where do you want it today?" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Sounds about right for a company that had a monopoly until Steve Jobs saved Apple and later by his death, also had a near monopoly on the smartphone industry (until Android shook things up). Though neither Microsoft nor Apple are good companies.
It is not... I tested my java development workflow using intellij with heavy docker usage (multiple microservices) in wsl2, ubuntu vm (vmware workstation) in windows and bare metal linux. Fastest descending: 1st) bare-metal linux 2nd) ubuntu vm 3rd) wsl2. Even the vm running in windows was faster than wsl2 and if you add all the annoyances that wsl2 brings compared to pure linux... It is so inferior OS for any modern backend/frontend developer, it is not even funny!!!!!
To be fair, for a long time; one of the selling points for Linux has been the software repos. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung etc. are all trying to create a robust software store (aka repo). Well curated software isn't a bad thing. All of these operating systems still support side loading. Most users are not tech savvy enough or are not in the know about every malware or exploit and these companies take action to protect the users and avoid expensive lawsuits by removing the attack vector as quickly as possible. Linux is great for the savvy command line heroes, but it can be a point of contention for less technical users.
WSL is just one tile of the strategy Microsoft started 10 years ago with supporting Linux on Azure. MS was "contributing" Hypervisor kernel drivers to allow Linux to run and integrate with Azure cloud management system. WSL is using the same drivers on your PC.
I have been distro hopping for about a week now trying to find one that I want to use. I wanted to put windows back on my laptop for a little while. Windows will no longer recognize either of my nvme m.2’s now. I totally planned on going to Linux but I have been having problems with wine to run some of my games that I played all the time. That is why I wanted to put windows back on one drive and Linux on my other but now I can not. I can not find any support other than buying another drive. So now I am telling Microsoft to piss off and now I am going to start the trouble shooting of Linux to get my stuff to work. Another slightly off topic People need to realize that with Microsoft, Apple, and Google taking freedoms slowly is the same thing that the government is doing. Great information, thank you.
They are taking some really big steps lately. For one, they censor everything and drown us in Corporatocracy Empire propaganda. The facts are very hard to get to and understand. Journalists get banned, imprisoned or disappeared. Heard of James Gordon Meek for instance?
Hell, wine is terrible to run common apps because I don't know why is missing. Not everyone wants to torment themselves because they have better things to do in life. People need to admit that.
The WSL images have configuration that is exclusive to Microsoft (warning) and it also requires to have paravirtualization enabled, so in my case, stucked with a corporate Windows PC, I directly use hyper-v to get a GNU/Linux VM with encrypted LVM, and another Windows system without the corporate policies, to be able to do my work.
This for developers. They could easily run Linux in a virtual machine, they are just making it more convenient. The reason why it is in the same list as minecraft is because the Microsoft store is shit.
Virtual Machines like QEMU are far more powerful for developers. You can sandbox not only the machine but its virtual network so you can have it virtually connected to another instance and if you want nothing else not even the host, making it far easier to debug server code as the instances can't see the host even on the network.
@@Psy500 Developers might be intelligent enough to sort through all that. But not everyone wants to waste time setting it up to work right. Convenience trumps all until downsides start being too much. And MS is smart enough to not go overboard with that.
Microsoft destroyed my SSD in 3 months. Brand new Samsung pro 2tb drive and had MS on for 3 months. Completely used up all reserve storage and in 3 months, turned the drive into useless, making it read only by wearing all reserve. I no longer run windows bare metal anymore.
I am a software developer. 2 weeks ago a had enough of windows💩I switched to Ubuntu. First I couldn't boot. I needed to change booting setup to boot Linux. After 2 week my working tools setup so mutch better then before. I really love Ubuntu.
There is a joke about M$ which goes like this - Q. How many M$ engineers does it take to replace a light bulb? A. None. They will declare ** Darkness as Industry Standard **. That's what M$ is all about.!
I really disagree with the argument that having WSL "bastardizes what Linux is all about". How can one claim that Linux should be free and open for everyone to use, and when one agent takes this philosophy and uses it you get all "oh no, it should be use freely, but not THAT freely...". So, should it be free for everyone, or shouldn't it? You can't get both ways, you have to choose. If you defend the freedom and "open sourceness" of Linux, you have to agree that both minor and major players will be able to use it. WSL was meh, WSL2 is awesome. This video just hates windows.
WSL is the best thing since sliced bread. I've always wanted to learn Linux and WSL gives me the chance to do that within windows on 1 machine. I need Windows for work and learn Linux at the same time and totally hassle free. It's allowing millions of windows users to have hands on Linux. Isn't it just like using Linux in VM? Linux learning curve is very high for the average person. I'm semi retired and learning Linux to exercise my memory remembering CLI commands
I know I'm late as hell but I searched stuff about WSL cuz it's now randomly on my pc and I don't know if it's safe to delete or not cuz when it popped up randomly I thought I downloaded malware or a virus.
I agree on the fact that Wsl2 is a sh#t show. Migrating from wsl1 to Wsl2 broke for me. Reported the issue to Ms team with no response. And I disagree with the statement that Microsoft will destroy Linux, 😂 atleast they lost one user, me, when no workaround worked for wsl I switched to Linux distro, never really used Linux as daily driver. But once I grabbed what powers it brings into the table I can never go back to windows or Mac, happy arch user since 2018.
I believe everyone can refer to Richard Stallman the founder of FSF regarding free software and his opinion about why most Linux distros are not really free either.
RE: Pluton (@37 minutes in) - THAT is why I flat-out will neither buy nor recommend Zen 3 laptops (because they ALL have it). Note, this doesn't apply to desktop models.
I totally agree with you. I use Linux and Windows 10 on different computers and this afternoon both will have Linux on them. Not playing ball with Microsoft ever again. Linux needs to be taken out of their store.
Could you show examples of Microsoft's spying that aren't able to be turned off in the settings? I've heard it thrown around a lot, but no one cites code or network traffic or anything other than "turn these settings off" and I kinda just want to know what one can't avoid before I fully buy into that Windows is tracking _everything you do_ which is a BIG claim that no one has cited evidence of.
are you mad what about the microsoft account thy try every way possible to get u to sign up with them. even when the computer belongs to you cus uve paid for it so then you cant use it unless you set up an account. thy tried stop the local acount and thts because these are not online accounts. ask youre self why the want to stop local accounts because thy cant spy on you because thy are not online accounts thats why thy try and force u to set up a ms account cus thy are online and thy can spy on every thing u do no matter how many seetings you turn off cus youre account belongs to them on there server. come on man wake up.
@@adamsnumber1 I do not like the Microsoft account thing yeah. I'm asking for info on what MS is collecting outside of known stuff like account stuff and the privacy settings. I just want to see where these claims came from before I make them. Also I just realized you can figure it out by checking network traffic, pretty sure if they did something absolutely horrible someone would have caught on and seen the traffic, it's been 7 going on 8 years since Windows 10
i will throw a small stone in the ocean with my name on it i bet you can find it since the ocean is wide open to everyone what ? no ? well systemD is so long whereas every vulnerability could possibly exist in it
This may be a little bit of topic, but I tried turning my surface tablet into an android tablet, but it failed, because of it having a lock along with the windows logo, I think. Somebody told me that it had windows, and a lock. I think it is a lock boot loader.
More of the same from Microsoft. Those who neither know or care stayed when MS Windows 10 launched, proving that people are easily taken advantage of. Some of us have zero use for WSL/WSL2 because we pay attention - just as you do. A second SSD is a pretty cheap investment, and some Linux distributions make setting up a dual-boot system easy. Unfortunately, some people will believe anything Apple or Microsoft tells them. Do you recall the line from P. T. Barnum? Personally I won't touch a Chromebook, or Cloud apps/storage. Otherwise, one can be a happy GNU Linux user without being a fool or an evangelical "Fan Boy" - I'd call you helpful.
@@dreaper5813 Actually, I was referring to the line: There's a new fool born every minute. As applied to the ones who got wise to the carnival tricks.

I see you and microsoft have a very different mindset. The way microsoft think about this is: User is the hub, technology have to bend to fit to that hub. That's why they make almost all of their products available for other platforms. But the way you think is: Linux is the hub, user have to bend to fit to Linux. You know it not gonna work. If people are on windows, let they be there and do their shit, you provide them a tool to help them out, thank you. OS or application, it doesn't matter, it just tools. As long as it help, that's awesome.
Isn't it itself risky from security and 'freedom' point of view that Ubuntu can on the first hand also phone back to Canonical which is in partnership with Snapcraft and Flatpak, not just Microsoft?
You are correct, because I use wsl2 doesn't excuse the fact that Windows are doing so many ill things that benefits them. I use a laptop that isn't fully mine, and I am gradually weaning myself off it. Also, it's pretty low on SSD space, and I can't have a dual-boot and still run WSL and WSA. In my opinion, those software are great, but it's the things that go on behind the scenes and all that telemetry shenanigans that trouble me. WSL is pretty nifty, as it makes you use both OSes in one place, but I wouldn't mind switching to a dual boot when I have a 32 GB ram laptop with about 2 TB of SSD. With such resources, I can enjoy the bare metal experience of my beloved Linux mint and run as many instances of Virtual box as I need to on both Linux and windows (especially Kali Linux). I feel blessed to have the knowledge of dual booting and Linux. Linux is definitely a safe haven. I will remember to stay clear of that pluton processor you talked about. Software development on Linux is the best feeling ever, and I'd only need a Mac to build IOS apps. My Ideal setup is having a dual-booted PC and an M1 Mac just for the apple specific things. Windows is fine, Mac is cool, but true power comes with Linux, everyone else can argue with their keyboards. Thanks for the time put into making this video.
I do use m$ - some of the software I use is Windows only. I plan on loading Linux on two of my older laptops after Win10 support ends. At some time I may upgrade my newer laptop to W11. For the future, I think I'm going to have to do some digging to verify if any new pc I want to buy can boot Linux (thanks for all your research).
When people call you a conspiracy theorist, it's not a good plan to then go "well if they're calling me one despite telling the truth then I guess I'm just a conspiracy theorist!" I know you're trying to be facetious, but bad plan, just say they are wrong.
The thing i dislike about WSL is that it cant be completely removed if anything goes wrong, it leaves linux crap/icons all through the start menu that no longer run its a mess. Far better off installing a distro on a seperate drive
thing I like to point out. I don't mind all the different security controls that companies can use to protect their systems and infrastructure. I really don't. So I will give Microsoft credit for that. Corporations have an extra burden. Even for my work computer, I'll happily accept all of these protective controls. But for personal machines, I want choices. Microsoft should not be allowed to be that restrictive. There's no need for it.
Some pc's have had issues with Linux and the TPM, you just have to try it and see if it works, if it doesn't come back and let me know and please include the hardware.
Yeah I'm NOT installing Win11 on ANY of my computers(or my wife's PC) and I'm already running Linux(EndeavourOS) on my PCs and as soon as thy pull support for win10 I'm installing Linux on my wife's Computer.
@@eBuzzCentral will you talk about systemD which is the cancer for linux ? because guess what poettering did not go to MS for no reason... millions lines of code
Hey Troy, excellent video. With regard to Microsoft, Its not just about running Linux on Windows that gets me riled up. It's more about running what I consider to be a robust, mature, stable and secure Linux operating system next to an inferior, security inept, bloated malware of an OS that is Windows that absolutely does not make any type of sense to me. If anything you should be running Windows under Linux instead of the other way around but Microsoft thinks so highly of themselves that they think they have the superior OS of which I beg to differ.
Microsoft and Canonical did not "partner", they FARTNERED. Bad choice on Canonical's part. (I caught it. The more I listened, I caught that you were using the same word, Troy. My bad.) Good Vid!!!
Wsl is slow… and can’t do some very normal stuff, you have crack you head to get it. And I agree with you on the privacy part. Locked boot is quite devil.
But i actually want to (/need to) use both, and wsl made that a lot more seamless. Don't look at wsl as linux alternative, it's tool on windows, allowing users to seamlessly integrate their workflow. It's extremely convenient for people who need to use both OS, many times in a single project.
See I was caught between a rock and a hard place when I used WSL - I needed Windows for audio and music work but wanted the convenience of the command line and the ability to run some utilities from Linux. Always loved Linux and always wanted to switch - it just wasn't ready for me so I had to go hybrid. Now I'm not bothered as I've been able to switch full-time Linux for 2 months so far and I've never been happier. It feels fun again and it feels like my computer. I've also had my eyes opened more to the shady dealings of the big companies, MS included. Your video brings up valid points, but there are some people that don't really have the choice. If you're someone who just uses it to browse the internet and look at emails, power to you, it's been ready for a very long time for you. Regarding MS using WSL to try and do some damage to Linux - I don't really see that. I think it's more that they're realising how powerful Linux is. Also from their standpoint, developing .NET Core and other open source projects, they would probably need some dual functionality between the two from their own development standpoint and compiling to a Linux target as well as Windows (not sure if this is possible - I'm assuming so). Just my feeling on this.
I don't understand the argument? It's a VM for Windows, it's like saying don't put your code in GitHub bc it's Microsoft. Those are Microsoft services eula users agreement.
And sometimes it's tempting to bring children into equation: what would you feed to your offsprings? Like, I don't blame you if you have to use it or can't go out of comfort zone just yet, but come on... they need better treatment. Leaving possible abandonment and other abuse out of the picture, limiting them to Windows after hearing all these arguments is the worst one can do.
About MS told people they need to verify code running on one's computer. That's true, but who should verify this? MS? Really? And who verify Windows and verification process?
not only is it usefull for developers, but it really helps those people stuck with the windows only mission critical app who don't have to dual boot anymore. most of the rest of the rant appears to be about microsoft peering inside its virtual machine, which you don't provide any evidendence for and the fact that the microsoft sore has a rubbish ui as regards finding stuff. would you oppose being able to install vm's on linux from the package manager?
Some of your points are valid but its not all black and white. I’m a Linux user but the some corporations suck the windows tit so hard developers like myself can’t use Linux and have to have MS everything WSL actually makes it easier than using Virtualbox. Yes comparing it to other apps is looking too far into it. It’s still a virtual machine at the end of the day, On my own personal computers I use Linux. Although I do have a laptop running windows with dual boot for certain things.
I'm not sure how I feel about the whole situation. I mean I'm agree with your points and I know MS is in it for profit. But here's what I envision as a result of this partnership: Canonical will be bought out by MS and slowly fade away. Not what I want to happen though. And there is a real danger of Linux and the opensouce community being diminished , if not in total ruin by MS.
I can see how using linux subsystems as applications can be useful but like I never really liked windows 10 except their powershell since its underrated. I always used either QubesOS, Arch Linux or sometimes Kali Linux here and there but that is just for me doing that on my phone to do some so called "hacking stuff". for Kali Linux. Windows use for me is just gaming, that's it. But only for games that are not compatible for linux. So like COD or whatever it may be
Windows hater much? really bias opinion but can't see the other side. I have a powerful windows mini pc. I can run linux on the side if I wanted to. Too much all at once. At least with WSL I can get my foot in the door and learn the syntax and navigation first. I am in the middle of building two websites from scratch. coding it all and learning as I go. Let windows users get their foot in the door and if they like it enough, they will unlock the full power.
Keep doing the good work your are doing..we all know the evils of Microsoft but chose to give a blind eye. The truth is we are so comfortable with Microsoft products coz that's how they were designed, to keep us glued and going nowhere but now we know better thanks to your good work. Be blessed brother
11:00 I used wsl because I needed to manage a PGP email encryption key and I didn't see any way to add a 2nd email to the key w/o Linux, so it came in handy.
Some things Windows does aren’t bad but most are questionable.VBS is a thing that would be a nice feature on Linux…… advanced kernel protection an integrity checking wouldn’t be bad for Linux security I wouldn’t hate if I could use the full security suite on intel 12 gen. On Fedora anyway so no worries.
I would love to run Linux on an separate install from windows but God damn it make it easy to use duo boot The ones that I've been trying to use you have to go into your bios and change settings that could fuck everything up if you don't know what you're doing install a duboot program done it should be that simple.
I can't think of a use case scenario for Windows now, unless your business needs the legacy software dating back to Windows '95, or you're already an addicted gamer that "needs" the latest Windows games. The business people have paid, over and over again, for that software and it simply must work for them. It's the business attitude that says "anything free can't be any good". People must remember Microsoft is what it is. A hyper commercial OS with ads. A free Linux philosophy is simply inappropriate and unwelcome in a corporate setting. If this is not you, then use Linux and enjoy it to the fullest.

Microsoft is gonna Microsoft. Here we some of that "Embrace" they're known for. Hopefully all it does is help people get more curious about Linux itself.
WSL e WSLG are tool for developers. There are several developers that have to use windows because companies policies. A lot of them would like using a Linux distro for their works but they can't. Really in large companies there is a great windows legacy and rules that deny you to install Linux on hardware that it's not yours. IMHO... Welcome WSL
Linux isn't only used by people seeking privacy and freedom, its also good for development, thats what a lot of people use it for Also as a developer I'm already uploading my code to Microsoft github so. But I take your point on privacy but Linux is too much of a hassel to use lol I don't see how this hurts Linux people can still use Linux on its own., it doesnt lock you into an ecosystem I mean iy sort of teaches you practice with Linux/unix so its easier to switch Also if windows ever screws me over I'll just switch then. Though it is still a threat since I'll be used to windows so they would have a little control over me I'd be biased against going against them. But realistically I wasn't going to anyway I mean I allegedly pirate stuff and they let me so what would they get me for anyway. Public pressure would stop them from a lot of things. Although if people thought more like that in general then less tooling would be developed for linux then for windows and then windows would be better, and then Microsoft will have more control, so you definitely have somewhat of a point. But wsl doesn't have that much to do with it
It doesn't hurt them at all, this whole video is just angry neckbeard ranting. Nobody is taking native linux away, so WSL is merely "more options" and this guy can't handle the idea of it because he hasn't gone outside in 30 years. He's also incapable of understanding that different people have different use-cases and needs from their computing, and instead seems to think that because he PERSONALLY doesn't have a need for it, then nobody should be allowed to use it and it shouldn't be allowed to exist. I don't think he's fun at parties. Don't get me wrong, the TPM stuff is valid enough, but the ranting about WSL is asinine.
All of M$ is crap. Period. I have been using M$ technologies for software development and I can't even begin to explain the weird things I have had to do to get the code working. It's horrible. There is no innovation there and yet they manage to take all credit for innovation someone else did. Take for example the virtual desktops - They have existed on Linux since Linux was born and they are a thing in Windows only now yet people are going gaga over it - oh Wow! they have virtual desktops. That's great. I don't know how they do it but it is very wrong.
Seems like an overly dramatic reaction on many fronts. It’s just software. Get yourself an Apple II or a nice little GS, maybe an IBM 5150, and don’t connect to other machines. This should help reduce the paranoia of the “phone home”. The idea that proprietary is evil is flawed and misguided. Fun fact- your ISP and all the parties from A to Z can see everything you’re doing too, no matter what the OS is. While I don’t embrace our data being mined and sold, I’m also aware that total abstinence from the internet your only true positive control method.
While I do nearly all of my development on a native Linux OS machine, sometimes there are windows only tools I have to integrate with and I have no choice but to use a windows machine for testing and debugging. WSL has made it much easier for me to do that. For people interested in moving to Linux but feeling intimidated by it, I'd recommend Mint Cinnamon. It's very similar in look and feel to Windows and makes the transition easier in my experience. I don't recommend using windows virtualization in linux, however. Even with other distros like Arch, it's sluggish and nasty.
Geez that was a long intro and self promotion. About 1:00 to skip. I also set the sponsorblock segment for it. Btw I don't mind WSL, I use it as a way to run linux stuff without switching because I _can't_ switch. Stop trying to convert people to linux if they don't want to use it. You can turn off the tracking in windows with oosu10 or w10privacy anyways. I just want something that works, I don't want to have to go through all the time to learn linux just to use some things that are exclusive to it. And no, I'm not a blind windows fanboy either. I put in effort to disable Microsoft's shit, i dont agree with what they're doing. At the same time, I don't have the time to fully learn linux. I run linux mint on an old laptop even since it works just well enough to browse the internet and watch movies on the go too.
i don't agree with u. first of all, Linux has 10000 distribution, and not even 1 single good distro. full of bugs, issues with audio drivers and a lot of more drivers, small applications need wine to run some windows app bcs no alternative for linux, themes that work good with gnome, or kde but u need tweaks and etc etc. Windows + Ubuntu subsystem is very good. maube instead of 10000 distros, maybe 1 with lot of themes... but 1 that work... without errors and visual bugs and etc
lol I don't have issues with linux since...10 years ago? Zorin, Fedora or Debian are really stable nowadays. Even Arch - rolling release distro - is more stable than windows updates. I take that you are talking about a specific Desktop Environment (DE) - KDE - that sometimes still has some visual bugs, but not all linux DEs present such bugs. Even KDE is more polished now thanks to Valve support. Exceptions may happen with windows too. If you like gaming and have an AMD GPU you don't have to worry about drivers at all, it's pre installed. If you need coding, terminal proficiency may help you to the point where you won't even need vscode. You can automate your own routine with cron, easily backup your preferences/configs to your own cloud/github, etc.

WSL is still trash in 2024. It hardly ever works. You try to install thins from CLI and it just hangs up, but it won't crash or even report an error. I kid you not, I tried to install neofetch through Ubuntu WSL, and let it run overnight and it was still in the same spot after 8 hours of sleep. WSL is NOT a suitable way of running any Linux system. Granted, many will say "Just run real linux" but that doesn't work for all of us. There are things that you cannot run in WINE, Bottles, Lutris, etc. For that, I feel like the only logical option is to have VMs that run the distribution you need for your purpose. It's a shame that Microsoft has become so horrific, and I wish that they didn't have a monopoly on so many things, but, it's not like our politicians will ever do something to protect us from big business. Anyways. This was a great video. I just felt like I had to rant in your comment section.

I have to admit I didn't like the idea of running linux on windows. Like you said I run linux to get away from windows. I prefer having windows running inside a virtual machine inside linux for anything that needs windows and does not work with Wine which is getting to be less and less these days.

I absolutely doubt it because Windows is practically malware with everything that Microsoft wants to have in terms of data

I use WSL to ensure compatibility between Windows and Linux development platforms.
regarding "Microsoft Is Destroying Linux ", for a linux purist, has wsl really changed linux?
i’m going to have to defend WSL here, i’m only 23 so bare that in mind. about 2 years ago I wasn’t really into Linux until at university i was introduced to WSL and man i loved the development experience on Linux which has now got me into making Linux my primary OS. the initial barrier of entry of dual booting was enough to push me away previously. so making Linux this accessible is a positive in my experience.
WSL1 is like Wine, it will never be stable!!
Instead of the tag line "where do you want to go today?", it was "where do you want it today?"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Sounds about right for a company that had a monopoly until Steve Jobs saved Apple and later by his death, also had a near monopoly on the smartphone industry (until Android shook things up).
Linux is great for the savvy command line heroes, but it can be a point of contention for less technical users.
if you can't defeat them, just join them. excellent move Microsoft.
WSL is great. I love it.

People need to realize that with Microsoft, Apple, and Google taking freedoms slowly is the same thing that the government is doing.

What do you think of OpenIndiana project?
More convenient if you work as a DevOps engineer and when you have to use windows on you work laptop 💻. Use Alma wsl
the ubuntu over windows 10 does not work. i tryed and it failed. errors all the time. same programs, same konsole, native linux works just fine.

I've had countless problems with wsl IT'S NOT A FULL UBUNTU EXPERIENCE but I am bound to use windows by my company
Years ago there was the mks toolkit which had many unix command line tools, so if that’s what you wanted, there is no need to run a whole Subsystem.
Those are vm machine they are running in hyper-v, so that statement that they are apps
Yea sure, I really wona make windows a dependency for my Linux 😂😂
Conspiracy theorist means that your view will be proven true within 6 months.😎
Hey eBuzz Central can you please do a Video talking about Chrome OS which I really Hate Chrome OS do you HATE Chrome OS? So Microsoft are not the only bad guys but they seem to be your favorite to call out but let's not let Microsoft have all the spotlight can you please make a video about hating on Chrome OS or make a Video about Android or Chrome OS giving your thoughts to Google Spyware.
I recall when MS destroyed Netscape. I also know when/how MS started, by stealing the other developers work in the same garage, way back when...
Have a nice weekend and I really appreciate your work despite I first saw you on Invidious a few weeks ago. This is short and educational. Have a nice weekend and I really appreciate your work despite I first saw you on Invidious a few weeks ago ✌ ua-cam.com/video/jb9l_thEOeU/v-deo.html
IMHO... Welcome WSL
Very good point! WSL/2/g target a very small subset of users and for them it is really useful.
Linux isn't only used by people seeking privacy and freedom, its also good for development, thats what a lot of people use it for
Also as a developer I'm already uploading my code to Microsoft github so. But I take your point on privacy but Linux is too much of a hassel to use lol
I don't see how this hurts Linux people can still use Linux on its own., it doesnt lock you into an ecosystem I mean iy sort of teaches you practice with Linux/unix so its easier to switch
Also if windows ever screws me over I'll just switch then.
Even with other distros like Arch, it's sluggish and nasty.
hahaha, not to that extend for me, creativity are welcome
wsl / wsl2 , docker in windows os is like virtual machine :) not real the power of gnu linux os :)
can we block Microsoft from including Linux as subsystems? Is there a way?
Microsoft is trying to be like Apple.
The Linux devs are doing it themselves
We can all go to the Epstein Island in the Matrix?
Microsoft bad... **Standing ovation**
i don't agree with u. first of all, Linux has 10000 distribution, and not even 1 single good distro. full of bugs, issues with audio drivers and a lot of more drivers, small applications need wine to run some windows app bcs no alternative for linux, themes that work good with gnome, or kde but u need tweaks and etc etc. Windows + Ubuntu subsystem is very good. maube instead of 10000 distros, maybe 1 with lot of themes... but 1 that work... without errors and visual bugs and etc
lol
I don't have issues with linux since...10 years ago?
@@luiz8755 i use both windows and linux, and Ubuntu keep reseting my audo options after every restart, Ubuntu becoming slow, 2 messages of crashing app every boot time. i use intel with integrated gpu. Windows is more stable. Windows + subsystem is the best for me.
agree with you....
I'm pretty sure the Balmer ideology regarding Linux left with him...
Meh, personally i think m$ shouldnt dictate what you should use and lock devices to using windows, i will always avoid a locked device to a single os, unless we come to a state where there wont be any choices.. As for wsl, podman on windows for as much negative it sounds to linux, i think they still are needed tools, my cpp program teacher uses podman and to me as a (mostly) linux user that helps out, so yeah i became aware isn't for everyone obviously, i heard about them and even experienced them, though not goin to change from it, and if m$ attemps any funny shit like uefi lockdown best we can do is to go find unlocked hw, once it happens even then i don't see much else that we could do, most ppl dont really care, so i just hope i does not happen atleast anytime soon
I have to admit I didn't like the idea of running linux on windows. Like you said I run linux to get away from windows. I prefer having windows running inside a virtual machine inside linux for anything that needs windows and does not work with Wine which is getting to be less and less these days.
