Gentlemen, thank you for this episode and its topic. I have been searching for the words to explain why the common good within our country seems to be so distorted and lacking in meeting the needs of all people. Thank you.
In addition, if Word on Fire has or knows of books one can read about this episode on the Catholic understanding of the common good, please let us know what they are. Or would Word on Fire will be able to assemble the knowledge and write a text whether book or paper about what was discussed in this episode.
As a new convert to Catholicism who has drawn much insight and inspiration from you, I've noticed that you seem to be a little obsessed with 'Wokeism.' Wokeism is a belief that discrimination against marginalized people is systemic - which is true. And while the attempt to level the playing field may sometimes go too far, why do you constantly take swipes at Wokeism and the Left but never - ever - critique the hypocrisy, social and economic cruelty, and even neo-fascism on the Right? It wasn't the Left who stormed the Capitol on January 6th or elected a serial sexual abuser, degenerate pathological liar, crude malignant narcissist, and adjudicated insurrectionist to the land's highest office. The Left doesn't vilify immigrants, intentionally sabotage necessary border protections for political gain, or engage in power-grabbing gerrymandering or voter suppression tactics (i.e., political cheating). In fact, while the Left was instrumental in trying to expand basic healthcare for the entire population, relieve college students of massive educational debt, and enact laws to protect and care for our planet (as I believe St. Francis would have done), the Right was busy trying to pass laws degrading the planet for corporate gain and cutting taxes for billionaires, all the while working to gut healthcare for millions, stop student debt relief, and shutting down any discussion on raising the minimum wage above a 'starvation wage.' The Right cares nothing for the poor, marginalized, and oppressed - as Jesus did, and almost seems to take pride in actively hurting and exploiting them. But in all of this, you say... nothing. Instead, you and the Right fixate on Wokeism, expressing moral outrage about the few who may want to change the pronouns in front of their names or go through the tragic process of transgendering - all incredibly personal decisions and a tiny segment of the population - while remaining silent about the massive social and economic evils perpetrated by the Right. Why is that? Why, Bishop, instead of aligning yourself with those on the Left who are attempting to care for God's creation and promote social and economic justice (while unabashedly and unreservedly expressing whatever moral reservations you hold), you so readily hobnob with the likes of Jordan Peterson, a Trump sycophant who traveled to Mar-a-Lago to bend the knee to an anti-Christ and kiss his ring, and Ben Shapiro, a pro-genocide liar and grifter? Why, Bishop? Why?
The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago
As catholic I come here seeking for wisdom because I’m confused about how our church discerns and speak about our civil issues in America. I hear clearly an argument against the extreme WOKE movement in terms of individualism and self-centered interpretation of moral principles but I don’t hear an argument against extreme right and their racism, discrimination and promotion of hate. I hear the church speaking about abortion and euthanasia but don’t hear anything about gun controls and mass shooting. I hear the church talking about market economy but don’t hear anything about how CEO’s make 1000% more money then the lower positions in their business and how through lobby companies influence policy for their own good. I don’t hear anything about systemic issues that still today affect those that are disenfranchised and marginalized. I say this from my own privileged position and with curiosity about how as Catholics we can be more honest and active towards these issues. Thanks and God bless.
Oh, Divine Jesus, our Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. 🕯🌼
Fair point. I think some preliminary research will show that the Church has condemned these intrinsic evils, such as racism and whatnot. I don’t think Bishop not mentioning these U.S. far-right evils takes away his point though, if that is what you meant. I think combatting evils, on either side of the political spectrum, comes from letting Jesus change us, working to become disciplined in virtue, building a habitual spiritual life, and evangelization through how we live, and through explicit proclamation of the Gospel. If we conform ourselves to the Gospel, through the teachings of the Church, we will change culture in our community.
Sadly you won't hear much about those topics from Bishop Barron, he's a brilliant academic and theologian but is more and more comfortably conservative beating on an anti-woke drum. In that he has his good points but it's become just repetitive and one-eyed.
@ definitely very bad, without the basic common ground that we should strive for ”the common good” somehow in some way, there cannot be democracy at all. We will end up in either anarchy or dictatorship
@ Common good is a basic christian concept that fortunately have penetrated the minds of many non-christians - like the level that makes bread rise or the salt that gives taste. Consider cultures and leadership that do not foster this idea: the Hamas regime in Gaza would be such a recent example
IMO, the problem is that the state has assumed authority to re-define "good" as it pleases. This usurpation of ecclesiastic authority undermines the separation of Church and state.
8:21 tbh, one of the things that drew me to Catholicism was it's ardent opposition to Marxism... Wokism is a manifestation of Western Marxism...so Bishop Barron is correct, at least for me.
Building opportunities for people is important. I agree. I only see red flags when job service offices close down, because Mass job loss is directly behind that and then homeless shelters and hospitals fill up.
Funny enough, I’ve been praying for the common good to prevail, On another note, “wokeism” does not carry a negative connotation for me, it’s the setting up those conditions which make for the full flourishing of individuals in society- acceptance of individual human dignity, as a part of the collective.
“How do we measure the greatest good?” / well, some believe the answer is so simple , by a tape measure! ( to measure which «Open Range» is the largest tract in their Landscape for as many as possible to just keep grazing happily & «hopping in all directions as one herd with no Shepherd » until, well _ for them too _ « unto the end of the world »! ) // btw, I personally recommend the Fatmax brand , it would be quite suited to the fat grazers!
Bishop Barron, would you please cite the magisterial Church document that defines capital punishment as "intrinsically evil"? That would be very helpful & much appreciated. Thank you.
Google Pope Francis on the death penalty... He did a speech at the capital in DC... It's still in the catechism but the church is saying it's no longer required
It doesn’t and it can’t. God instructed Israel to implement capital punishment. Obviously God isn’t instructed Israel to commit intrinsically evil acts. The ordinary Magisterium has always taught the principle permissibility of capital punishment. What Pope Francis is doing is making a prudential judgement that in modern society it is “inadmissible”. Nowhere is it called “intrinsically evil” which would contradict Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the ordinary Magisterium.
He who becomes wise seeks to serve his Most High Creator, Eternal Present. He who becomes wise, seeks the Truth, seeks it, and finds it, treasures it in his soul, understands it, and offers it to all his brothers, because he understands that we are all brothers, creatures of the Most High Creator, Father of God Christ. , and Father of every creature shown worthy of HIM. There is no greater Honor for us, souls briefly housed in matter, in a trial to be born or die, than to serve even from here, the Son of the Most High, who grants much more than what is given to Him. God Christ teaches us to live from this trial as children of His Most High Father, our Creator. God the Creator grants us the Glory of all Glories: to serve His Son, our Savior. May our Assemblies, in which we invoke the sacred name of the Son of the Most High, and He is present to us in Body and Spirit, be more respectful, in order to be much more beautiful. Let us carry the Gold accumulated in our soul, earned in the bloody daily decision, in which we are born into worthy servants of our Most High Redeemer, our King promised by God the Creator.
Around the 15:00 mark, that is the same conclusion I reached with the cult of intersectionality a while back (and I’m not even “conservative”). It’s like an anti-religion. It sort of combines Hindu castes and western Christian concepts of original guilt with no chance of salvation (unless you find yourself in a more oppressed tier at some point).
Thank you for the recognition that a government has the right and responsibility to determine who may enter the country. The border laws serve to protect the citizens of the country. The immigration laws are to be observed and followed. Care for the poor and persecuted from other countries can and should be taken but not by the indiscriminate open borders which have allowed drug and gang infiltration; criminals; human trafficking, and all kinds of repeat offenders of our legal system. 🙏🏻🕊✝️🕊🙏🏻
@@ceciliadreger6319I meant to ask: What natural burial options are Catholics permitted to use? I wanted to know because I used to work in an embalming room and I know that they do work on you, even if it is a closed casket funeral. I also know that natural burial has many options, such as: Being wrapped in a cotton shroud and buried, being buried under a tree, consumed by mycelium, human composting, etc. I just wasn't sure what natural burial methods were permitted by the Catholic church.
@JosefWeinzierl-h9c Isaiah 66:15-16 👌 "For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind, to render his anger in fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire." It warns against an overly materialistic approach to worshiping God. This is a reminder for all of us to take sin seriously and to live in reverence for God's holiness. Isn't that perfect? Please, pray for all the people in the Golden State and Gold Rush. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
@JosefWeinzierl-h9c God said for those persons, that is, voluntarily offered themselves to God for the salvation of their neighbor (see Col 1:24; 2 Cor 4:12). This explains their close union with the Savior and others. And those "active" souls, who always promote the devotion of The Divine Mercy and exercise with it all to other works that lend themselves to the spiritual and material uplifting of their brethren. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
Here in Washington, DC, outside Catholic U, the moment you try to work left-leaning people through the day AFTER the achievement of political perfection, they dive for the woodwork. If you suggest that envy, greed, sloth, or lust in individuals will upset the delicate balance, they ask you why you assume people are evil, with the implication that it's because YOU are evil. Good people, in their mind, assume everyone is good (and hate has no home there). In brief, these are delusional people - God bless them - who maybe confuse the stories they heard in their liberal arts college curricula with the real life they may not have had much connection with elsewhere but suppose must be as beautiful, clean, and rational as what they were taught. BTW, Bishop Barron, thank you for the common sense and also legally informed opinion on immigration; I'm not aware that Catholicism objects to nationhood, and without borders there are no nations.
I am a left leaning believer practicing Catholic spent 20 years in youth ministry. Calling all left leaning people if somehow being hostile to Catholic social teaching is just wrong. Most of my deeply Republican friends hate our social teachings and believe in mass deportation. This isn’t going to solve our problems republicans businesses are responsible for bringing illegal immigration’s here for cheap labor. Left Keanu g people have in many ways made our society better for reminding more conservatives how we are our brothers keepers. No one says we shouldn’t have borders and immigration laws. It is how we treat all people made in the image of God
Uhhhh... I am 'left-leaning,' and I don't fit the caricature you're spouting. It is the right wing that hates the poor, marginalized, and oppressed, that stormed the Capitol, that elected a criminal, insurrectionist, and degenerate human being as president. Be careful what you say.
Your hypocrisy is touching. Clearly our right leaning brethren embrace dictators, rapists, narcissists. Our common good has become as dead as the American eagle.
Mandatory abortion of immigrants fetus. Will stop the concern of anchor babies. Liquidation of immigrants will end the concern of the borders. The good bishop can easily embrace defeat of "woke ism" Ayn Rand would have also supported this.
There is no place in schools for propaganda of any ideology. This is crucial and the most important thing, IMO. And we, as catholic parents and educators, have a responsibility to speak out.
Not possible. You will always teach a certain way of thinking and doing things favourably, compared to other ways. Just make sure it’s grounded in what’s good, true and beautiful.
Appreciate at least there is some discussion. Sister Cabrini had it right . Men could not do what those Nuns did and Accomplished . Plus spreading it al through other countries. There still a breakdown, and xou have to know that .....

22:25 “Capital punishment, the church maintains, is intrinsically evil” This is NOT the position of the church. 1) God commanded the Death penalty in the old covenant, what God demands cannot be evil. Capital punishment might be circumstantially evil in particular cases but it is absolutely not intrinsically evil. The church has ALWAYS maintained the death penalty as being just in principle before the current pontiff inserted his personal opinion into the catechism. The church had used the death penalty itself! The papal state had an executioner for Pete’s sake!
Old testament law doesn't dictate anything. Jesus did not teach that at all. He very explicitly spoke against the death penalty in John 8 and spoke AGAINST the Pharisees, the very church you're touting as example.
@@drockopotamus1 Old Covenant law is no longer in effect and so we no longer are REQUIRED to use the death penalty as punishment for the crimes as directed in the OT. But the very fact that God ever demanded its use proved unequivocally that it is NOT intrinsically immoral, God does not command us to do evil. John 8 does not say the capital punishment is wrong in all cases, it was Christ showing in a particular circumstance that mercy was preferable to justice. But Jesus was not saying the death penalty was evil, for that would be to say God commanded evil. This is what the church has ALWAYS taught.
@@folofus4815 you are right. Bishop Barron made a mistake there. He was trying to think of a third "intrinsic evil",and his brain put forward something that is not intrinsically evil, but is prudentially evil at this time.
@@drockopotamus1Old Testament civil law doesn't tell us what we should do, but it still limits what we can declare intrinsically immoral. Catholics believe in a God whose commands reflect His goodness. As such, God cannot command that which is intrinsically immoral (ie ordering capital punishment), even if He can allow for temporarily imperfect laws (ie allowing divorce for the hardness of men's hearts). That's not to say that we're commanded to continue carrying out capital punishment; mercy is not only a live option but the preferred one in the Christian dispensation. But there's a big difference between the implications of seeing the unrepentant murderer as deserving death but granting him mercy and the implications of seeing the death penalty as an assault on his human dignity. The latter quickly leads to the question of why Hell shouldn't be understood as a similar assault on human dignity, which tends to end in either Divine Command Theory (which is not a viable option for Catholics) or flat out rebellion against God's justice. I suspect that the confusion that has arisen around the death penalty ultimately comes down to this -- we must desire the good of even the worst criminal, and some in the Church have started to believe that it is impossible to will the good of a criminal who one is executing. That's the assumption that needs to be questioned. There are few cases where death is the only way to prevent even a hardened criminal from digging himself further and further into Hell. But I don't think it's obvious that there are none, and when the evils of such a person cannot be contained without taking his life, removing the option of executing him would not conduce to the good of anyone.
Now try understanding what Pope Francis is teaching. It doesn’t look like you have taken the Catholic requirement in trying to understand his point. Jesus said, “Let he who is without sin throw the first stone.” He said that in context of a law their society had at that time. There isn’t one verse that says the death penalty must exist. Slavery was also allowed. Something being allowed isn’t something that must exist. When is the last time someone on death row escaped? That is a question his teaching is based on. Is it self defense to have the death penalty when that person cannot escape? That means it is currently inadmissible though it was admissible in the past. That is his teaching
Bishop it’s so hard for me to understand how someone’s so smart and so well practiced in their relationship with the Lord can not comprehend the fact that systemic oppression is a global issue. Your stance on so-called wokeism is very disappointing.
Common Good for all peaceful coexistence what exactly is wokism aware of the expression what is the definition of of the word slippery slope of how we got to this point and time that we live in today Christianity is still alive but quietly persecuted by political ideology today 2025
I'm amused by the "rational" atheists whose belief system, and that's what it is, states that life came about randomly, that our consciousness is merely the byproduct of a brain whose existence is also the result of random forces, and that we are mere specks who have to determine our own meaning. How can the meaning created by a random speck actually be meaningful? Wouldn't the meaning decided upon by that speck, due to its random speckyness, be quite meaningless?
Except that we can show that life, it's diversity, consciousness all have perfectly reasonable explanations which anyone with a bit of education can test to see if the science is true and valid. But on the other hand, you guys have yet to evidence that your god actually exists and does things. @notny has little or no education on these subjects, might I take it you are a product of the American education system?
Everyone is against Marxism... Which is good but America is a dual economy much like China... Americans get social security and usually enjoy having that benefit... So America is not a pure capitalist country or a pure Marxism country. China I believe uses capital markets but we tend to hate the fact of leadership that comes with marxism which is communism. There's a good Airmaria video by Friar Elias that talks about the importance of protecting the vulnerable in our country. After 1929 we realized that markets fail and there should be a security blanket. All good topics of research
The kingdom of God is a watering hole that is guarded by the strongest animal. He keeps the water clean by making sure the other animals don't defile it. He keeps the other animals from tearing each other apart. All who are thirsty may come and drink, so long as they respect these rules. And all who drink are filled and never worry of thirst
Acknowledge God's mercy for any areas that remain untouched by the fire and storm in California. Remind yourself that God is in control during this time of devastating natural disasters, even though all the fights were canceled. Jesus is with us🍂
"Slavery is intrinsically evil. No negotiation is possible." - i agree. Unfortunately, the god of the bible does not. He not only says it is ok, he explains how to do it. Leviticus 25: 44-46.
Would it not be better to identify the faithful with Christ than with sin? We were born into a sinful world , but now if we put our faith in Jesus, we are reconciled. Calling us “separated” or “sinners” is no credit to Christ and counterproductive to edifying His church.
St Paul identified himself as "the chief sinner." We are sinners who have been Redeemed by Christ Jesus. One day we will be Perfected in Him. So, both/and, not either/or. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I surrender myself entirely to You. I trust You to take care of everyone and everything.

Why, Bishop? Why?
You posed the classic question twice during your discussion on immigration, what would Jesus do? Both times you seemed to wave it away as rather naive. But really, what‘s the answer to that question? What would Jesus do?? It‘s obviously not a question we can skirt, and there‘s hardly another question worth posing. I really, really doubt that Jesus would insist on the right of a „nation“ to define and defend its borders and then compare countries to houses.
Jesus was not an anarchist. He understood -- none better -- the role of government to protect the citizens. Without borders, we have anarchy. It is the most fundamental rule of life that there is a cell wall that separates what is within from what is outside. The moment the wall breaks down, the insides leak out and the outer environment enters, and there is no living cell. "What would Jesus do?" is irrelevant. What is the important question is "what does Jesus want each of us to do?"
Obviously we must look back at History and what the wiser and more prosperous Christendom/Western society did in the past. The question cannot be understood under the nationalistic patriotic point of view but only under the Faith in God and a life according to this. As Catholics we are commanded to protect the Truth, the real purpose of life is therefore to live accordingly with the teachings of Our Saviour and His Holy Catholic Church. Social teachings of the Catholic Church are well defined and there are no new problems that cannot be solved under this light.
@@susand3668 The analogy of the modern nation state to a microscopic cell is about as enlightening as the state to a house. You‘re going to throw your back out bending that far over backwards. If Christ wasn‘t an Anarchist (though I am unconvinced at this point if you would acknowledge the difference between various forms of political anarchism and the colloquial meaning of the term as „pure lawlessness“), but was, as you seem to believe, politically conscious and opinionated, what modern political ideology would you use instead to anachronistically describe him? „‚What would Jesus do?‘ Is irrelevant“ I am legitimately shocked to read this.
@@Äöüäöü654 I apologize for my inadequate analogy. And I am sorry that I shocked you. I would not dare to limit our Lord to any "modern political ideology", just as the Church (which is His Body, according to Paul in Ephesians 1:23, in Romans 12:5, in Colossians 2:17, and extensively expressed in 1 Corinthians 12:12-31) cannot be limited to any party or nationalism or ideology. Jesus is Lord of lords and King of kings. He is most certainly not an anarchist. But "What would Jesus do?" is not a question that is ever asked in the Bible. The answer has to be "How should I know specifically?" The question "What is Jesus asking you to do?" be answered, because the Holy Spirit will lead us, through His movements in our heart and through the Instructions He gives to and through the Holy Catholic Church.
Somehow there are dozens of countries around the world that keep church and state separate, and they haven't "descended into chaos". Even if your god exists, there is still no such thing as "objective" morality. The morality you believe in IS "subjective" - "god" is the "subject". The ONLY way to ever claim something is "objectively" the right thing to do is in reference to a shared goal. Until we agree on a goal, it's not possible.
Bullying your co-worker is slavery. Damage relationship and social connection with your colleague. Alwsys remembers "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell." You don't need to show me how to feed the dog it's shows your poor behavior.
I really wonder who Mons. is trying to dialogue with. "Wokeness" is not a thing unless you define it and reffer to specific authors. Failing to do so is simply right wing ideology constructing a straw man.
@@BishopBarron How about instead of fighting philosophical ideas that people don´t actually consciously hold to, and so they only exist in right wing culture wars, how about instead being a real sheperd of the Church and talk directly about what people really experience in their lives? Speak plainly bishop, all this talk against "wokeism" is mere throwing smoke to disguise anti-LGBT speech.
The bishop speaks as if his god is real/factual but no one knows if there are any gods god or none, that question is unanswered but there much to say humans invent them. To think there are gods is not reasonable or logical it's the opposite as there is absolutely no quantifiable evidence for them.
When you say "gods", we all know that you have missed the point. Bishop Barron is not speaking of "a god" but of God -- Creator of all that is. He is beyond time and space, the author of rationality, the reason there is a "science" underlying everything. Without such a God, there might be mindless chaos, but there would be no "laws of science" to be discovered by the human mind, which would not have appeared no matter how many eons you throw at Original Nothingness. (Even atoms have rules and are rationally based.) Your own logic should tell you that. Steven Hawking could not imagine a universe without laws, without reasonableness.

The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained

I could go on reading your comment only HALF WAY, you are a weakling talking about racism on the right buuuaahahahaha...grow up.
Sadly you won't hear much about those topics from Bishop Barron, he's a brilliant academic and theologian but is more and more comfortably conservative beating on an anti-woke drum. In that he has his good points but it's become just repetitive and one-eyed.
Gustavo Gutiérrez is a good counterpoint, from a Latin American perspective.
Very important, people do not even consider the concept ”common good” anymore!
Is this good or bad in your view?
@ definitely very bad, without the basic common ground that we should strive for ”the common good” somehow in some way, there cannot be democracy at all. We will end up in either anarchy or dictatorship
@ ????
@ Common good is a basic christian concept that fortunately have penetrated the minds of many non-christians - like the level that makes bread rise or the salt that gives taste. Consider cultures and leadership that do not foster this idea: the Hamas regime in Gaza would be such a recent example
IMO, the problem is that the state has assumed authority to re-define "good" as it pleases. This usurpation of ecclesiastic authority undermines the separation of Church and state.

Funny enough, I’ve been praying for the common good to prevail, On another note, “wokeism” does not carry a negative connotation for me, it’s the setting up those conditions which make for the full flourishing of individuals in society- acceptance of individual human dignity, as a part of the collective.

22:25 “Capital punishment, the church maintains, is intrinsically evil”
This is NOT the position of the church.

As a new convert to Catholicism who has drawn much insight and inspiration from you, I've noticed that you seem to be a little obsessed with 'Wokeism.'
At its core, Wokeism is a belief that discrimination against marginalized people is systemic - which is true. And while you may believe the attempt to level the playing field may sometimes go too far, why do you constantly take swipes at Wokeism and the Left but never - ever - critique the hypocrisy, social and economic cruelty, and even neo-fascism on the Right?
Francis would have done), the Right was busy trying to pass laws degrading the planet for corporate gain and cutting taxes for billionaires, all the while working to gut healthcare for millions, stop student debt relief, and shut down any discussion on raising the minimum wage above a 'starvation wage.' The Right cares nothing for the poor, marginalized, and oppressed, and almost seems to take pride in actively hurting and exploiting them. But in all of this, you say... nothing.
Instead, you and the Right fixate on Wokeism, expressing moral outrage about the very, very few who may want to change the pronouns in front of their names or go through the traumatic process of transgendering - all incredibly personal decisions and a tiny segment of the population - while remaining silent about the massive social and economic evils perpetrated by the Right.
„‚What would Jesus do?‘ Is irrelevant“
I am legitimately shocked to read this.
When asked amount tax, Jesus said, Give Caesar what belongs to Caesar. Yes, Jesus at least allowed the notion of the national.
The answer has to be "How should I know specifically?"
The question "What is Jesus asking you to do?" be answered, because the Holy Spirit will lead us, through His movements in our heart and through the Instructions He gives to and through the Holy Catholic Church.
