In the late 1950s an old chap with a dinghy ran a ferry service from Shepperton near the pub across to the island on sundays. It cost sixpence with free return. The Desborough cut was dug to relieve flooding at Shepperton.
Jasmine your remarks regarding the digging of a channel straight through to weighbridge on the Thames prompted recollection for an excellent presentation which examines the life and genius of pioneer environmentalist Victor Schauberger. The link below should take you there and I hope you thoroughly enjoy it!
Squeak was more vocal than ever before with her insistent 'right now' meow but I loved how the entire soundtrack had an audible purr to it. Her one loud shriek woke up the cat beside me.
Hi Jasmin yes Kate Winslet did live in that house with the Dory moored in that cut out in the river bank , opposite where you had your swim 9.11minutes is called Lady Lynsys Lawn at Shepperton , we had our Christmas day dinner on our boat many moons ago there, the barge has been moored well over tens years now, opposite is that nice beach we used to clean the hull off our boat as you could walk all the way round it, glad you had a nice visit. Best of luck in your travels. Clive
From your time line 5.37 to 5.41 you will see a fence and two jetty's they belong to the converted pump house , which one of them was Kate's, i think she moved in after the conversion, being the first tenant, the pump house being divided in to two homes thus the fence dividing the property's, you will see the dory day boat . Sorry it looks as if i should have started a new sentence where you were swimming was Lady Lynsys Lawn .
you guys went past where I live, you didn't wave lol there used to be a dump on the island, bottle collectors used to roam looking for treasure :-)) have fun on your travels.. Gaz
4:05 The Karma Chameleon boat would definitely not make it under that bridge (it's a large boat!) .. so there's not way that the music video was shot in any location AFTER that bridge.
Oh dear -The Island was created in the 1920's (probably wrong) as part of improvements to the Thames by M'Lord Desborough (hence the name) to encourage greater us of The River for bulk transport. There are other improvements of a similar ilk as you go upriver. The moored barge at the Weybridge end is an EA workboat used for - all sorts of things- and of itself is of no historic importance. Makes a nice overnight mooring, if you wish....
Hi, I'm quite intrigued by these water channels. I've been to England some years ago, and never seen any thing like this. Where are these channels? Would love to visit when I get there again. Love the idea of living on a boat.
Great video as always - Was there yesterday - Very nice place to be. @NBlovie currently in Chertsey for blacking and a couple of modifications. Back on the Thames next week.
I've just found my perfect narrowboat for me. Tonight ! Was there all day. Now organising survey. Felt so Cosy and Amazing. Didn't have a clue 6 weeks ago. Now learning something new everyday.
Google Earth shows the island to be quite extensive, as you discovered on your circumnavigation. At the "top" (north-east corner) there are two irrigated circular grassy areas showing a couple of cricket pitches and sight-boards. There is a single pole with two floodlights (which you can see in your video through the gap in the trees at 7:23 min). At the bottom left (south west corner) of the Google Earth image are square grassed areas marked out for various games, possibly including netball. Google maps tells me that there is a _Weybridge Vandals Rugby, Cricket and Netball Club_ on the island.
The rugby club is a simple shed, stacked at one end with barrels of beer, all cunningly concealed with trees from prying eyes. Who then needs to get battered black blue to drink a shed load of beer!
This is one of the few Narrowboat videos I have ever seen that shows a spot where it is safe to tie up and swim! I think that the one thing that would like the least about living on a Narrowboat would be not being able to hump into the water and swim.
The water in the canals is dangerously dirty and disease ridden. Cursing the Cut once did a video where he answered the question "Can you swim in the canals?". He went on to list some of the things that are in the canal, and a few of the diseases you could catch, it was not a pleasant list.
there are lots of places i know people to swim, the thames out of tidal is safe enough (apart from i think abingdon has blue green algy atm, and if you go to cheshunt there are lodes of lakes you can swim in
Very interesting. I love the vlogs, that show the history of the canals ,and rivers. P.m. I thought only us Yanks, would think about changing River ways.
Awesome video girl but am confused about the wild swimming as you looked quite happy in the water and not red faced angry, lol. All the very best and good to see a video from you again.
Just a play on the word wild as in why would you be wild swimming, I love swimming so would never get wild.. Sorry we have a different kind of humor in NZ.
There's one mistake, I helped build a converted pump house, and a very famous actress lived in it, if I said Titanic that might give you a clue.1🖐 and the rugby club is University Vandals club had some drinks or 10 there 🤪
ThisNarrowboatAdventure The Island has a couple of cottages that North Surrey Water own and employees live in them, plus the converted pump house that Kate Winslet owned, it has resident's 🖐
ThisNarrowboatAdventure Jasmin off Topic I know but if you go towards Hampton court, take a walk to Bushy park it's acres of beautiful landscape and have numerous gardens, lakes wildlife ECT if I still lived down there you could of popped in for cup of tea lol 🖐
This is well above London. I grew up in Kingston Upon Thames in the ‘70’s and the river was our playground. I don’t think the term ‘wild swimming’ had been invented then, it was just swimming, and my parents were happy for me to go in anywhere above Teddington. Once working I was based for several years in the Weybridge and Chertsey area and Desborough always had Water Co. people living in the tied cottages as well as several rough sleepers living in the woods.
@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure My comment was not a criticism. The shape of the island on the map looked square for an island thus in my mind I thought it might be manmade and of course after listening to your vblog your explanation verified my suspicion. Good job.
Hi Jasmin - I'm not sure about the actual butty that's (always) moored by the island but we bought our Lee lighter from a dredging company just round the corner at Shepperton Marina. They're all getting tied up and left as they take around 70 tons of mud at a time and the land-fill charges are massive, so there just isn't the work for them these days. Along with that is the availability of mooring/lack of insurance for such large/old vessels if used as houseboat conversions - luckily we're putting ours on land, a bit like Noah! ( ua-cam.com/video/CbRug22vSeI/v-deo.html ) 😁
Oh gosh Karma Chameleon was shot there?? This is interesting! Thank you so much for the coverage, it means a lot to me. As for guessing where the video was taken, I have a very good idea where but it's hard to describe it to you, but I'll try .. Watch the video at VIMEO ua-cam.com/video/JmcA9LIIXWw/v-deo.html from 0:00 - 3:55 you can see the camera pans from part of the river up to a T-junction behind Boy George, that can only be one spot - goo.gl/maps/rM64uitxzBM2. I also got a clue from the large ship that came at 1:36 of the music video .. with the amount of things and people they need to transport back in the day I doubt they will go into the island but instead shoot outside looking in, on the other hand the ship might not want to risk the shallow waters but instead stayed on the main waterway just for the shooting of the video.
The Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon" was an 80's, early 80's video. That was some 35 years ago so things might have changed. The key is a set of concrete steps in the first part of the video but they could've been overgrown in 35 years. I'm guessing your right on the location. Peace
Jasmin, there be no such men! they are water trolls, or Thames trolls, Fishermen! Never, also these heads were you meaning North American Caiman? Just wondered. Cheers
Thank you for giving this former Weybridge resident (now living in New Zealand) a lovely trip back to distant memories!

Thanks for showing this one of your adventures, very interesting from the other side of the pond.
thank you for watching my friend
The river was very quiet but beautiful. Thanks for another interesting episode.

Thank You for making this happen!

I like these island ones :)
I enjoyed the long way rather than the short way - it was much more interesting!
me too!
Nice book club adventure vlog. .love the cat giving you a running commentary too!..
Really bossy moggy .. Fun.
MagicaLucem haha :)
A great bit of history. I would like to camp on the island for a few days and just chill out.
do it!
It also had a Royal Observer Corps post (Weybridge, Horsham 10 Post).
did it! thats very interesting
4:05 The Karma Chameleon boat would definitely not make it under that bridge (it's a large boat!) .. so there's not way that the music video was shot in any location AFTER that bridge.
maybe the bridge was build after they shot the video, also many of those boats have moving parts to help them under the bridge.

Great video, lovely countryside. Hard to imagine that there are so many islands on the river Thames. Is the river, salt or fresh water.
fresh water

you know i think you are wright!
The reason you can not see anyone on the island is because they are all in the VANDALS RUGBY CLUB HOUSE on the LASH!!!!

I'm learning. What would keep a person from swimming anywhere that your boat is moored?

Think it is inhabited, definitely two houses at least and the bin lorry goes round .
I see... Well my appologies!
Is the water clean? I was in London some two years ago, and it looked very murky.
it cleans out as you get further away, i dont worry much about germs, i cant remember when i was last ill in the uk

very well researched ! I think you're right!
So a natural conservation area that had a man made channel dug through it, and water pumping stations to manage the river levels.
Naturally......
