I'm stuck in the old "what's the right thing to say" conundrum and I don't have an answer. Just know, Ian, that you are admired and loved across the world!! I know that doesn't lessen the magnitude of what happened. Love you and your work!!

Ian I am flabbergasted at how you were treated. You are a respectful, level headed, kind creative; there is absolutely no reason anyone should be treated with the threat of violence, especially by an event organizer of a public event. That is disgusting and simply uncalled for. I wish you would have contacted the authorities. There is no place for the threat of violence, even in jest or joking. I am thankful that you are safe, and that you stayed calm and level headed to just walk away. I must admit after that, I would have declined any ribbon. They don’t deserve your quilt in their show. Yes, they have the right to have a photo policy in place, which as an industry standard works as an umbrella covering all forms of photography, video, digital media, etc. but they did not clearly have it posted, so how would someone even know? You were respectful and quick to accommodate their said policy and inquiring more information by discussing the situation with an event coordinator should not have been met with a threat of violence. Please let us in your community know if there is anything we can do to back you up as you take this up the ladder. I hope I speak for all in your community, when I say thank you for being authentically you, and sharing your creative journey with us. We are here for you.

Hmmm....I hadn't thought about the copyright and limitations on photography and I think live streaming would be considered photography. Much misunderstanding occurred, seems to me. Based on your experience, I'm guessing it is best to contact the quilt show organizers at any of the shows to see if live streaming is allowed ahead of time. The thing is, that a lot of the quilt guild organizers are 'older'..in age and experience with social media and might not yet be on board with how much You Tube live streaming and other avenues could enhance their attendance and income stream.

I was watching live when you were told you couldn’t film the quilt show. I am shocked at how that was handled. That person should not be allowed to be at the quilt show based on what he said, it was VERY Inappropriate! I can tell you were caught off guard and handling it in the best way you can. Know that I appreciate you and love your videos! Excited for your upcoming move! Keep moving forward and don’t let this experience change your sweet spirit. Keep quilting!!!❤

Just now watching, wow. I’m so very sorry you experienced this horrible interaction, but you showed such class and grace in the way you handled the situation, which speaks volumes about your character. It’s just a shame that at an event that should be enjoyable and peaceful, this word was even mentioned. Stopping there on that topic. Moving forward, you have so many ribbons and awards ahead, and people in a new part of the country will have the opportunity to see your creativity and craftsmanship, which they will love! Looking forward to your next chapter!☀️

This would be the first time, at any quilt show ever!!! I would think that a world known quilter live streaming a quilt show would benefit them. The quilting world is small. I hope they get minimal entries next year, and little support from vendors or others. This is not an HOA. I am appalled. Quilters are giving and sharing people. These people are not part of my community. They should be ashamed of themselves. Ian, have a big hug from me.. really simple, if people DON'T want their quilt photographed, or filmed, they should mark it as such. If vendors don't want their booth shown in image or otherwise shown, they should likewise post that clearly.
Ian you are so much better than any of this. You have our endless support. Big big hugs honey, Chel 🌸❤💐

What the event organiser said to you was totally inappropriate - I hope you contact the show and get an apology. When you read the photography policy I believe it meant a whole umbrella across the mediums - photo, video - inc live stream as it is a video, and you have to ask permission before posting a photo onto the internet - so essentially your video is a photographic representation that you are putting an image on the internet. - someone could snapshot a photo from your video and replicate the quilt.
(Please note: this is my understanding/interpretation/opinion from the policy you read.)
Congratulations on winning a ribbon for your showering stars. 🎉

I don’t know how big or important The Plano Quilt Show is to quilters. I wonder this because their staff acted unprofessional and treated their guests rudely and threatening. Plus to “gossip” about your videoing last year instead of reaching out to you smacks of unprofessionalism, poor customer service, immaturity, and just has any lack of humanness. I agree with the recommendation to reach out to the Guild and share your experience.

That person essentially threatened to cause you bodily harm. That is assault. You could have called the police and had him arrested ... He was lucky you walked away.
Photography literally means "drawing with light." Even though we differentiation between photography and videography, one could claim they are both covered by any photography policies.

Mum always said to me there is always a little bit of truth in every joke. I am sorry this happened to you ... the take away from this is your leaving that place and you are well and truly in your rights to complain firstly for the disgusting way this person treated you but also the subsequent request not to live stream with no notice or absolute reason not to. Also if as you say they felt the way they did it after the last year they had more than long enough to sort this issue. Having not done was on them ,not you. I do wonder how the guild feel about the treatment of their members ... generally they rely on a good relationship to encourage members to support such events. #boycottplanoquiltshow seems to be appropriate here.

Second, i would have located security and called 911. That person is definitely a bully and needs to suffer the consequences of his actions. He should be banned from voluntering for quilt shows to say the very least. No one should ever be exposed to such an encounter. The Plano quilt show needs to rethink several areas of the event and make positive changes. I rarely speak out on social media, but this situation needs to be addressed. Not sure why they wouldn’t want you to livestream. I live in Virginia and I love seeing the quilts in other states. What harm is there in showing quilts?

Plano Quilt Guild needs to have someone in charge of show events to correct their printed brochures to include videography, and/or live streaming, and to have additional signage posted at the entrance of the show and entry of vendor area as well for future quilt exhibits. As for the fact no one contacted you from last year, that is their own lack of follow-up if they in fact were not pleased that you lives streamed it last year. I would still file a police report of the threat made by the person referencing having a shotgun in his vehicle. He may say it was a joke, but I feel you do need to protect yourself. Crazy people do crazy things, and he has your name. Please use caution and look out for your own safety. Thank you for the lovely video of the quilts on display. Sorry it turned into such a negative encounter.

Wow, how inappropriate for someone to threaten you. Number 1 rule of gun ownership is not to threaten someone unless you are in eminent danger, which they were not. You are never to tell someone you have a firearm to take care of a situation. Thats not a joke and it makes responsible owners look bad. Just a simple, please do not video would suffice. Glad you were not harmed but I’m sure you are rattled by someone who doesn’t need to possess a firearm.

Wow I would not know what to say if someone said that about a shotgun. And what did that have to do with you asking the person their name? I agree they should have signs posted of no pictures or videoing. Sorry you you went thru this. Congrats on getting the blue ribbon.

At the moment that person threatened you, you should have called the police. That is completely unacceptable behavior. Ian, I'm just glad you're okay.

Congratulations on blue ribbon. As for livestream, it maybe a good idea to get permission ahead of time. They should have that clearly posted the policy.

Oh my God Ian! I’m so glad you’re okay! I personally would have called 911 immediately! Please contact the show organizers and report this with the name of the offender. I would also report it to law enforcement so they have a weapons threat report on file. Congrats on your blue ribbon. It’s a shame your experience receiving it was sullied. Can’t wait to see you in your new location.

Ian, you are not at fault. I 100 percent back you up ok this you dont deserve any of this. They need a clear policy and post it, and ya im shook. You deserve better, my friend. Crafting or quilting should be a safe place

I am so sorry that this happened to you - totally inappropriate. Guns should never be a joke or source of amusement- that was no joke… especially in a state like Texas where guns can be open-carry!
You did a tour of Quilt Con, right? I assume this show in Plano is smaller and less prestigious ? Congratulations on your award.

Oh Ian! What a horrible thing for that person to say to you! They mishandled that situation completely! (Yay on the ribbon!)
