      They weren't the only characters ruined pre-S8. I stopped caring about Jon after Ygritte died. He wasn't bad in S5 but S6,7, and 8 Jon was just a whiny bitch while being the most predictable and average action hero I've ever seen. Battle of the bastards and R+L=J confirmation was great but only cause it was well directed and was a theory that was finally confirmed. His character is so bland after S5. Another one is Tyrion. As soon as Tywin died and they chose to not continue Tyrions story from the books where he starts to become a villain, they made him a bland morally strong joke dispenser. It was just as bad as Jon.

      I think a very anti-climatic death is how he'll go out in the books as well. He has influence but no real power. He can't die in battle and he is against creating drama. Little Finger rose quietly and will die quietly. In sharp contrast to the Starks who all went out in dramatic fashion and who have many honoring their legacy.

    There is also implications that Little Finger is gaining a fourth base of power, besides the lands of the Vale, Riverlands, and the North, MONEY. As the Business Insider video on the economy of Game of Thrones noted, Little Finger's time as master of coin increased revenue, but the Iron Throne went from having tons of gold under the Mad King, to being millions in debt under Robert.
    While Robert did spend a lot on pointless jousting competitions and whores, trying to remember the "good old days" when he wasn't drunk or fat, there is no way he could spend THAT much, particularly with the finical genius Little Finger managing the Iron Throne's finances. Unless, that finical genius is using his knowledge of coin to swindle the very money he is trying to manage. Your quotes note he has control over "the officers of all three mints." There are a few quotes suggesting Littlefinger is diluting the gold in the currency of the realm, as well as other quotes noting that the capital seems to be suffering from runaway inflation.
    I am guessing Little Finger is taking the gold for himself. Even if he can't gain the loyalty of the realms he theoretically controls, he could take a page from the Lannisters and just buy an army.

      Very late to the party, but it could also be that Littlefinger is stuffing his own coffers while putting the throne in exorbitant debt to the Iron Bank. That way the Iron Bank would begin backing contenders to the throne (i.e. Stannis), thereby destabilizing the throne even more. Meanwhile, Littlefinger has the funds to garner their support when they lose patience with Stannis, or to buy an army, or to pay the Iron Bank back after he seizes the throne.

    Been thinking: The greatest threat to Littlefinger is not Varys, Tyrion or even Sansa. It is Bran.
    The reason Littlefinger succeeds is that nobody knows what he's really up to, or what he really wants. And so far he's been almost perfect at covering up his true allegiances and plots. Bran, however, could learn everything about Littlefinger. Like how he betrayed the Starks like times already. Which would ruin everything for Littlefinger (he would lose all support in the North and also in the Vale).
    Littlefinger said in season 1 that "Knowledge is power". Bran is (or will soon be) the one with the most Knowledge.

    As far as Littlefinger's next moves go, it's useful to keep in mind the specific provinces that Littlefinger now has either direct or indirect control over: The Riverlands (which the Lannisters gave him), the Veil (which he got through his marriage to Lysa), and the North (assuming he can keep control of Sansa). All three of these provinces have at least one thing in common: they hate the Lannisters. The North hates the Lannisters because they murdered Ned and Catelyn and Rob. The Riverlands hates the Lannisters because they murdered Catelyn and Rob, and twice laid siege to Riverrun. The Veil hates the Lannisters because they blame them for the death of Jon Arryn, and perhaps their mad about Ned, too (Ned spent years living in the Veil, and would have made friends with more than a few local lords).
    At this point, assuming Littlefinger’s goal is the Iron throne itself, perhaps the best thing he can do is try and rebrand himself as someone who hates the Lannisters as well. Certainly this could be an uphill battle, seeing how much the Lannisters gave him, and how much he did to secure their power. However, if he sells it right, it could work. If Littlefinger can portray himself to the lords of the Veil and Riverlands and North as the loyal servant of good king Robert, who, at first, genuinely believed that Joffrey was the rightful king, he can potentially absolve himself of any guilt by association with the Lannisters. Then, he could remind said lords of how he grew up in Riverrun amongst the children of good Hoster Tully, how he loved them and how it broke his poor heart to find himself on the opposite side of the war from them. He could tell them about how he, over time, became increasingly disgusted with the Lannisters’ brutal and repugnant tactics, and gradually less certain about Joffrey’s true parentage. Finally, he could reveal how it was he alone who rescued the last living child of Catelyn and Ned from the vile clutches of Cersei and Joffrey, and how he now wishes to make amends for his past service to the false Lannister kings by leading the rebel lords in a new campaign against the hated lions and their Frey lapdogs.
    If nothing else, you’ve got to admire his cunning.

Jamie basically kidnapped Varys into bolting Tyrion out of jail. It's as if nothing in the nature of Varys equipped him with what he needed to tackle someone like Petyr Baelish and he had to unexpectedly rely on the forces of chaos to gain an edge on their dramatic stare contest.

      Probably because Petyr doesn't feel love for others the way we do. Love to him, I would imagine, is a weakness that can be exploited. At some point his desire probably shifted from Cat to the throne, and her well-being was no longer very high on his priority list. This is just my interpretation, anyway.

    I want to see how Sansa develops as a character, especially her relationship with Petyr. Cersei always called her stupid, she calls herself stupid, yet one has to think she is going to begin to connect the dots a little. Petyr has even started "coaching" her on playing the game of thrones, or basically how to manipulate anyone and everyone you want to. She shows she's learning the game. Will she turn deceitful and evil as Petyr, or play the game and turn the tables on Petyr eventually? She is the only Stark to have lost their wolf, besides Rob, and he is dead along with his wolf. Is the fact that her wolf is dead mean she is unprotected and vulnerable? Will she survive? I think this whole saga revolves around the Stark family, and the ending will revolve around them also.
    I'm hoping Sansa is learning quickly with Petyr, but it will be his own undoing. He Is truly responsible for all that has evolved, including the death of her father, her brother Robb, and her mother, Lady Stoneheart. I want her to be the one to kill Petyr. It would only be just. And she seems to be Petyr's one blindspot-he is confiding in her like he has never truly confided in anyone. He thinks her naive and malleable. It would be sweet revenge for the Starks if she pulls him down!
    Sorry for the long post-I love this series!!

I used to think that GRRM didnt achieve the same depth and unity of Tolkein, but now I see how Tolkein, while still holding the market on goodness etc, was really just writing responsibly for young adults. He doesnt nearly achieve the weight of such a grand and slowly unfolding story, where everything we question is up for question - morality, theology, the nature of power, what makes a good ruler, what motivates different people and why - the works.

    • @01Sunshine234

      I was curious about that. Some religions seem to be real, such as the Old Gods, Rh'llor the Lord of Light, the God of the Faceless Men, and possibly even the drowned god if that guy Lodos was on to something. There are references to the "Black Goat" and "Lion of Night" who supposedly do have power, although they've never been seen in the books.
      One theory is that while magical powers exist, the reason is not really a god, and the followers are mistaken. Or maybe there really is only one true god (Death, or maybe not). It's possible that there are many gods, and it's also possible that all the gods are different types of deities, different from each other.
      And then there's the question of The Gods that never claimed to have power in the first place, like the faith of the seven, the God of the Unsullied, the Gods of the Summer Isles, the many, many gods of Essos.
      Martin himself doesn't seem like he's been paying much attention to all this, though, because he talked about it in the interview in Mexico as if he was one of the readers instead of the writer, although he has a habit of doing that, in order to not give away anything.

    yeah i just re watched season one episode 6.. where joffrey gives sansa a necklace identical to cerci/marcella's... sansa even says "beautiful, its just like the one your mother wears"..... sansa was obv given a necklace containing poison used by lady olenna to poison joffrey.. so its not the first time one of sansa's necklaces were used in littlefingers game. littlefinger steals this golden necklace from sansa, and uses it to send a threatening message to cerci in season five, prompting her to send jamie to dorne, fueling conflict between the martells and lanisters... the viper with sansa's necklace arrived in kings landing at a time where sansa and littlefinger were together.. littlefinger knew cerci would believe the necklace to be marcellas when it wasnt. LF could have sent a raven to someone in sunspear offering a bit of gold in exchange for the theft and disposal of marcella's necklace, so that when jamie arrived it wasnt super awkward when he discovered she still had her necklace... okay enough tinfoil hats for one day

      Hold on, I don't understand how littlefinger is involved in the threat sent to Cersei? Didn't Oberyn's bitch do that (I honestly don't know her name and almost don't care)? She did eventually kill Myrcella after all and she didn't deny sending the threat message when Jaime arrived at Dorne. I think that's giving littlefinger too much credit.

    • @KabooM1067
      @KabooM1067 8 років тому +1

      Heather Jones
      that... doesn't answer my question. How is Littlefinger involved in this? Even if the threat was sent by Littlefinger as OP claims, the tension between the Martells and the Lannisters would grow anyway regardless, once Ellaria killed Myrcella. Jaime's trip to Dorne didn't do anything and she was going to kill her anyway. I really doubt Littlefinger had anything to do with this.

    • @hcfjones

      He isn't involved at all. I was just saying how Cercei got the necklace.

    There is also the theory that Little Finger bankrupted Robert during his time as master of coin. Sort of a money laundering, self financing, strategic political move. He was certainly in a position to do that sort of damage and Robert was the perfect patsy with his drunken lecherous ways.
    not to mention how that sort of "debt" would cause chaos and contention on many different levels.

    • @ayami123

    Good video, really helps get your head around everything that happens! Only thing I might say is that it's the Freys that have control of the the Riverlands at the moment, not Baelish. He only has the Lordship of Harrenhal. Pther than that very good, very informative :)

    • @AltShiftX
      @AltShiftX  9 років тому +19

      Alex Oneill The Freys get Riverrun, but Littlefinger gets the Riverlands. "You were granted Riverrun with its lands and incomes, no more. Petyr Baelish is the Lord Paramount of the Trident. Riverrun will be subject to the rule of Harrenhal" - Jaime to Emmon Frey, in Jamie V, AFFC

    • @arandombard1197
      @arandombard1197 9 років тому +3

      Lexyvil But Petyr has the best claim to the North...the oldest (known) living Stark heir. Based on a comnination of the show (its at least partially based on the future events of the books) it does appear that Petyr is taking his army to take the North. Whoever wins between Stannis and Bolton will get wiped by littlefinger. The trio of the Riverlands, The North and The Vale just needs to team up with Dorne (who would gladly wipe out the Tyrells and Lannisters) and the war is pretty much secured. Especially considering the fact that Dorne and The Vale are completely fresh. Somebody has to take control of that Baratheon and Tyrell land. With pretty much everybody in his pocket and debt, he could very well ascend to the throne himself, if not then as a proxy ruler.

    Really like this video, a comprehensive breakdown of one of the most complex characters in the series.
    I seem to recall someone describing the Targarian throne room as having some fantastic tapestry of the Targariang heritage. Robert had them torn down and replaced with his own. I think there is some mention of Petyr being quite excited by some tapestries he was picking up. So his money is on a Targarian return for sure.

    Good video, Peter is by far my favorite as he is the most cunning and has moved more 'pieces' successfully than any other. To boot- he has a low noble birth and all his power he has worked to obtain--he has a few faults-- his love for Cat/Sansa and Gambling. He is an expert manipulator and I really wouldn't mind seeing him turned into a POV character in the future.

      I think the video did a really great job in summing up Petyr's motives leading up to season 5, but I agree Harry the Heir is a really important piece for Petyr as he continues to play the game of thrones. Although as always, I don't think Petyr's being particularly honest about his plans, I discuss Petyr's motives (including Harry the Heir) up to book 5/ ADWD, in my latest video so check out my channel if your interested.
