All of this old live stuff brings me back when I was a kid. When listen to music was a private thing, often in my room, alone, turning off lights and be submerged by emotions. And no one else like Bruce is able to sing for the lonely people.
In 1985 when I First listen to this version I didn't understand english very well, and It was so different from the version on the River! 20 Years later I listened to all the version of the darkness tour ! The deepest lyrics ever written, expecially when you don't know where aim your guns because you've been shot in the back...
One of the great songs from The River - so beautiful that it hurts... and the piano of professor Roy Bittan... amazing. Bruce and The E Street Band: the soundtrack of my life. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil!
Vitor França Galvão In watching a ton of E Street Band live videos lately, I’ve come to the conclusion that Roy Bittan was the Boss’ not-so-secret weapon.
@@RobJazzful You are more than right - remember that Bruce didn't send Mr. Roy away in 1989. Mr. Bittan went on with Bruce in "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town". Best wishes, Rob.

Best song ever! My dad played this song for the first time in august when we had my grandmother's funeral. Now I connect the song to it. A lot of feelings.
Was just thinking of this song today. Popped in my head. My favorite song from The River and one of my favorite Springsteen songs. This and My Hometown have been running around in my noggin.
It's want I do when someone ask me about music go and listen really really listen to Bruce Springsteen. Kid lived across the street from me like 20 years ago. I saw him a little while ago and he told me that I was right. Bruce Springsteen is a musical genius his songs tell a story.
Bruce is magical -- an extraordinary singer, songwriter, and musician. A force of nature. His lyrics are much more than the typical fare of pop and rock music. They're meaningful. They're deep. IMO Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band is the best American group in my lifetime.

The arrangement around piano is just classical. It just makes it a beautiful ballad. Takes blues and rock to a different level. ABBA and Led Zep did it and it worked.
Depuis la 1ère fois que je t'ai vue chanter c'est toujours le même effet encore aujourd'hui,très bel homme pas que ce soit un fantasme mais plutôt 1 exemple parmis très peu d'autres légendes grands respects à eux. 💚😘
This was a live centerpiece for a year or two before The River - I think he introduces it as new here. I had it on a couple live bootlegs before the studio version came out.
@@MrOttoDefay Bruce had alot of material from 1975-78 that never saw the light of day or appeared on albums way more time later. As a singer songwriter, I would love just to see the unfinished songs, just as poems or ideas.
Lyrics of the version played during the darkness tour changed every night but are really much stronger than that the definitive version realised in the River album!
The writing processes of Darkness On The Edge Of Town and The River were deeply intertwined. By late '77, Bruce and the E Street Band had recorded dozens of songs, but Bruce gave prevalence to the darker and harder rocking songs for the final tracklist of Darkness On The Edge Of Town, because he wanted this album to sound darker and less epic than Born To Run. Among the lighter, more rockabilly-sounding songs that were rejected at that time, many ended on The River, like Sherry Darling and Ramrod, because Bruce felt they belonged more in this record. Drive All Night and Independence Day were also written and recorded in '77 during the Darkness Session, and would have fitted perfectly on Darkness in my opinion, but they were kept for The River too. Then Bruce wrote further songs during the Darkness Tour '78 and premiered them during the latter part of the tour, like The Ties That Bind and Point Blank, which also ended on The River. The River wasn't even intended to be a double album, but a single album named The Ties That Bind, which was ready for release in late '79, but Bruce cancelled it at the last minute and went back in studio in '80 with a bunch of new songs. In the end The River is the result of 3 years of writing process ranging between the latter part of the Darkness Sessions in '77 and the last River Sessions of mid-'80. So this explains why many future River tracks were played during the Darkness Tour (The Ties That Bind, Independence Day, Sherry Darling and Point Blank regularly during the last months of the tour, and even Ramrod once in December '78), they were either new songs written in '78, or Darkness outtakes.
Brings back memories of all those wonderful Bootlegs that magically appeared around the mid and late 70s. Much better versions than the one's that eventually appeared on The River x

It is a real insight into the mind of Bruce when he writes lyrics this good and he says "No, I can do better".
and he did. just a week later in winterland ...

OMG I was at this concert in ‘78. Love and admire the Boss. I too grew up hanging out on the boardwalk in Asbury. There really was a Madam Marie’s.
I’ve always been observed what the connection was to that, thanks for sharing
