It would be nice to show the stones while elaborate.
I come from an opal mining family in Australia. "Red on black" opals are the most expensive not necessarily the rarest but they are broght up pretty quickly for the asian market so they end up being "rare" to be sold anywhere else.
This video is great, would love if you to show the stones close up as you talk about them.

Wish you had more close ups of them. And no I consider script pattern more rare than Harliquine but price is a lot about what the popular color is for that year and the Brightness after black base color
Technically the rarest patterns for opal are dependent on the type/locality.
For instance,
When considering Australian black opal, as far as I'm aware the rarest occurrence is for the stone to display "asterism" in their play of colour, very few examples are known to exist, even cat's eye stones are quite rare to see in "precious" opal, however, many examples of this chatoyant phenomena have been found in black opals and thus the cat's eyes are probably more common than true harlequin patterns.
The problem with the harlequin pattern is that many stones displaying "flagstone" patterns are mislabeled as harlequin, this may lead people to believe that harlequin patterns are much less rare than they actually are.
With Ethiopian opal, the rarest pattern is generally considered to be the "honeycomb" pattern although this may not be 100% true, it is however the most desired pattern for Ethiopian opal.
Unfortunately the difficulty with establishing definitive scales of rarity for opals stem from the mining practices, it's easy to determine what is the most common, just look at the marketplace, however, determining what is the rarest is obtained by word of mouth from the lapidaries as truely rare examples almost never make it to market and when they do, they sell fast.

I only buy rough Australian black opals (via Australian auctions that often source Lightening Ridge opals) and cut them by hand. I am certainly no expert, but I am impressed with how well they turned out. I stay away from doublets and triplets.
organic content trapped in the potch makes the opal black. White opal formed in areas with low organic content in heavily eroded sandstone. Black generally is found in air pockets of clay

There is a UA-cam video showing acetone used to remove oils and other infiltrates from hydrophane opal. The acetone does not harm gold or silver settings. It’s worth saving that ink-filled stone in this video.

On the topic of synthetic opals.
This may not be as interesting to others as I personally find it to be, however:
I feel the need to mention that whilst columnar formations like those seen in the Gilson imitations are generally only associated with synthetic opals, it isn't impossible for natural opals to form with very similar columnar patterns to those seen in the synthetics, it is simply exceedingly rare for them to do so.
I have in my collection a Queensland boulder opal displaying a regular columnar formation with ironstone that I personally cut from rough, I made sure to retain the ironstone so that it could be easily identifiable.
The same can be said for "lizard skin" patterns often associated with Gilson synthetics, previously I have observed a deceptively similar pattern in some Andamooka matrix opal.
Neither stone would be considered particularly valuable in the market though as the Boulder opal only displayed a limited play of colour from green-yellow, and, the Andamooka was heavily included with a directionally dependent play of colour.
Although the stones exhibited what could be described as attributes most often associated with the synthetics, neither would be mistaken for the synthetics for the obvious aforementioned other reasons.
I understand that most people won't have much interest in these particular examples, however, it is something that personally afforded me a greater appreciation for the synthetic opals and their somewhat unique appearance.

That's so fascinating. I've been trying to find out the value of our antique opal ring. It has come down through the family but after loosing my mum a few years ago we don't know what to do with it. None of my sisters or nieces would wear it so I'm thinking about selling it and giving the money to my dad (hes wanting to go for a trip to Iceland and seeing the northern lights). Still have no idea how much its worth but looking at this video was brilliant 😁

Try touching a rough opal with the tip of your tongue to see if it's Hydrophane,I once heard. I tried,and some really do stick .

If it dosnt have a play of color then it shouldn`t be considered an opal imo, I have a 10ct black lightning ridge 4n brightness of 4.5 with ultra violet - brilliant blue. I love it but Ive had opals that lose there color and it didnt come back even after I dryed it out for a couple months.
Why? it's all the same composition. Same bs with saphire and ruby. It's dumb. It's all opal. If anything, opal with play of color should just be called gem opal to separate them.

She’s actually not very informed about this and shared a bunch of misinformation. N1-n4 darkness all have same value based on darkness, it’s the color play/brightness and pattern that are more important not how black it is. As long as it fits into the black opal range of n1-n4.

What?? Lol solid opal is solid opal. Potch doesnt determine if its solid. Wow, the best opal in the world is solid and has a potch back most of the time. If you add a backing its a doublet. If you add a quartz cap to its a triplet.
Host rock naturally with opal is solid still.
Pin fire is not rare.
why do you say this? any supporting evidence to back this up... in ethiopian opal, it is very uncommon
