Very informative! One safety question, why doesn’t Riese & Muller incorporate Garmin radar into their bikes? I have a Specialized Vado 5.0 with the Garmin Varia Radar system built into the display and tail light and it is a fantastic system! I always know when, where, and how many cars are approaching from the rear. I think it makes biking much safer!

Tilting at windmills. Even on the very best electric vehicles (Tesla) the regen does not significantly add range and a bike would be far less efficient than a 4400 lb car.
I could imagine a geared hub motor ride by wire System with regen breaking built in and one lever breaking via linked brakes, supported by ABS. Could be a fully integrated ultra low maintenance ebike you just get on and go.
The math really doesn't work out for regenerative braking on e-bikes - it's just not efficient enough and there isn't enough energy to capture to make much of a difference at this point in technology. The one thing that might eventually shift that balance would be supercapacitors, but even then, the benefits would be very limited and would rarely benefit most riders. I don't have the data at hand, but I did look into this a few years ago after seeing a couple videos of people doing it with Chinese hub drive homebrew e-bikes. They showed more benefit than there really was because they were missing a lot of the little technical nuances and knowledge of how batteries and charging/discharging actually work vs. how they look on volt meters. At this time, it really isn't practical, and even under ideal conditions, it's realistically probably never going to be.
It would be good if the older frame mount batteries (powerpack 500) were able to be updated. I have an older R&M Delite and although I have plenty of range with 2 batteries, it would be great to take advantage of any higher capacity cells in the battery packs. Looking at the load models that use the 725 watt frame mount batteries, can these be used on older Delites? I'm UK based by the way.

Also wonder why they don't make a 250watt extra battery with build in charger for on the road that would be a even better way if you need to up your charge along the way say during a quick lunch (make it 6a). Overall i get the feeling the 2024 models are great but more in a dip to recover from c19 times before we see the next wave of upgrades.
First off, love the videos and information you bring. I was wondering if some time you might lay out the offerings or compare what the low end entry points are for getting into an e-bike, but one that has safe batteries and systems. I know you have talked about this subject before but it would be nice in context with what the low end options that are available with these systems compared to the lower priced offerings with systems that may be questionable. Thats at least my main concern with moving to an e-bike in relation to my budget.
we’re seeing a growing number of products become available and compliance with the new UL standard. I think this is a big deal. Some brands might still have some questionable standards elsewhere, but at least we can have more confidence that the batteries are safe. We definitely favor Bosch for a variety of reasons, but some other brands like a Ben 10 and Bellatrix seem to be growing in popularity as more affordable options. I have found that the ride experience is quite a bit different, but that’s likely what I would recommend somebody else to consider. I was thinking about making a video about the variety of eBikes available meeting the UL Standard I think it could be really helpful, especially given the new New York City law which comes into affect September 16th.
@ledheavy26, When it comes to ebike battery packs, my first advice is DO ***NOT*** buy refurbished batteries, unless it's the original company refurbishing them. Many a lithium fire resulted from improperly serviced battery packs.
Sad to miss your take on Eurobike but great that you are taking time for your family! Other European tenancies rubbing off on you I see. We have a Load75 on the way based on your suggestions. I'm looking for a bike for me so we can go on family rides. Any opinions on the brand Kalkhoff with the Bosch smart system?
Definitely going next year! Maybe with the family. I think Kalkhoff is a great brand also made in Germay. I've been to their factory a few times and we sold them for many years but they have since left the US market. I would recommend getting a Bosch motor on their bikes though I think its better than the Impulse
I have a R&M 2019 Delite GX extreme rohloff HS. Comfortable, fast, quiet and reliable is how I describe it. Mine is the older Super Delite GX model with the more visible dual 500w batteries. It has the excellent Rohloff E-shift 14speed and the range is 80-100 miles if I'm not climbing a lot or going too fast. The bike has nearly 20K miles on it and a new Bosch Performance motor that was installed in June of this year under warranty. I have another ebike as well so the mileage is deceptively low as I ride approx 500 miles/month. These bike are expensive and many don't see the value. I can tell you having owned 10 or so ebikes that quality does count. R&M is an expensive bike but it's very high quality with well integrated components and software. I'll ride this one till it dies and will look at the market with an open mind at that time, but if I were buying now, R&M would be at the top of my short list.
thanks so much for sharing your experience! I love all the integration on the bikes these days, but there’s something about that original Delite with dual batteries. It's really tough looking! I wish you many more happy miles ahead
Hey Chris I love your informative videos. My only suggestion would be mentioning the prices of these bikes and features in your videos. Saves us further research later. Thanks for your great videos... :)
Thanks! Perhaps we can add them into the description? Adding into the video can be challenging and there are different prices for different regions so I don't want to confuse people.
@ratbert1 That's fine, a general price guide is helpful . When talking about bikes with a price range of $US1,500 to $US18,000 you can gauge what is in you price range... :)
@@guymalpass9618 I appreciate that, the options can change the base price significantly, I would advise a quick google of the Propel website to solve the price question every time.
Your channel is EXCELLENT! I have a bike With Enviolo Automatiqe. And I absolutely love it ABS ? Yes yes yes ! That will be difference between falling over and sliding along getting road rash Or Stopping before a collision. Battery vs batteries ? I like option. If you go too far with one battery you are stuck trying to get back pedaling an 80# bike . So if you do proper planning and you realize too close to running out you throw on second battery. Kinda like flying small plane you don't want to run out fuel before you get to next runway What about about a regen system that adds in power as you pedal ?? Like old days little generator that produced power for lights ??
I got a Delite instead of the Super because I didn't want to have the extra weight 100% of the time for range I might need maybe 1% of the time. The farthest I might ride in a day is about 30 miles, and one battery is plenty for that. And in that rare case where I'd want to do a long all-day trip, I'll give you a call and order another powertube, and throw it in one of my panniers!
Chris, thank you for this information. I have a few questions about the Superdelite. Specifically I'd like to know more about the comfort kit. How does it change sitting posture? Would love to see a bike equipped with the comfort kit side by a side with the one that did not have it. Also, when comfort kit is included why are cockpits unavailable? It must be a mounting issue but can the Kiox and Nyon really not be mounted in another way? Do the Superdelites (model 4) have walk assist? I've read/seen somewhere that they did not. Finally, if R&M ever updates the Superdelite with antilock brakes do you think older bikes could be retrofitted? Thank you again. R&M is lucky to have you as dealer and on the front line. I'm in the States and hope to purchase in the future. Glad to know you ship! I don't live close to the NE or Cali. Jack
I've been waiting for ABS before I purchase my next bike as my commute is largely on a dirt path, on which I have slipped and fallen a number of times. I've always gotten lucky but have witnessed a few accidents where folks weren't so lucky. It's easy to forget the speed you are going at, and when you suddenly need to break hard, ABS can be sorely missed. So glad to see it finally making its way into the R&M bikes.
Like to have seen R&M shave a lot of weight off the Superdelite range it being a touring bike in excess of 30 Kg with both batteries, none of which I personally would like to take on any tour!
Well, I really hope you continue to do it even though you’re not doing it lol is that you do the ruling interviews I really enjoy them and I hope you answer this question that I’m about to ask: how can you stop doing the rolling interviews and winter is coming up now so you’re not gonna do them in the winter time more than likely why did you stop doing them?? And how many Yuba cargo bikes you work on and what other ones you work on the most and what ones are you able to upgrade? Thank you.
We have one more rolling interview to publish next week then we need to plan for more. They are really the most logistically and financially challenging videos to make but some of my favorite as well. I need to work more on our sponsorship model to make them more regularly
Pitty they dropped the purion displays on the new stuff. I buy bosch because I want an appliance. Turn it on, simple, uncluttered. Purion did just that. Works in incredibly bright sunlight and isn't blinding at night. Are the color displays bright at night?
Unfortunately not. The Purion 200 is made to work with the Smart System only. You could consider the Kiox or Nyon though. We've upgraded some Gazelle's with these.
Thanks! Much appreciated! I definitely look forward to checking out the Pinion in person. I’ve heard mixed reviews so far I think it’s very challenging to do what they are doing so I really respect them undertaking the challenge. They have been working on this concept for about 10 years so I hope it performs as expected
Things I look forward to for ebikes: - solid state batteries for weight, capacity and safety improvements - full Integration of all electric components to be driven by the main battery - ride by wire without a chain or belt to reduce maintenance - geared hub motor to provide range of hearing
Thanks for the updates as usual, Chris. I'm disappointed in the integration of the battery on the Culture. This will inevitably add unnecessary costs for the for consumer when it comes to having to replace and it also takes power away from the consumer by making it very difficult to do a simple task like changing the battery. It's the wrong way to go. ABS - as long as it's an option and not forced, it's just not necessary for most people. I like the GPS tracking and locking feature of the new bosch systems. Now that's useful!
Interesting that they didn’t upgrade the Superdelite. I would love to be able to upgrade to the Kiox 500. I do see the thinking of the Delite with the Powermor upgrade. Thanks for educating us about E-bikes!
I'd love to see the PowerMore battery option available on an updated SuperDelite model. Done a few big trips and I don't think you can ever have enough batteries when you're miles away from anywhere. As for ABS? Absolutely! Cars and Motorbikes have had it for years. Anything that stops the back wheel from visiting the front wheel when you're stopping is a must IMHO. Cheers
I recently was thinking of trading in my Cube Kathmandu 625 45 (which is 62 cm) in on an Homage, but found the frame sizes so small. I'm 6'8". I was really disappointed. The range extender battery is really interesting. But, I don't know if it would work on my 2021 Cube?
Sorry to hear ir didn't work out. They do have some larger frames but the homage is limited to the 58cm. There are definitely some modification which can be made to make it fit better for taller riders
I don’t understand the appeal of dual battery on the bike. If I want a second battery (or a third, or a fourth, or a fifth), I just bring the extra battery/batteries in my bag. No need for the cost of the extra mount.
@@badabing8884 How heavy is it to carry? No heavier than a second battery installed on a bike. How expensive to buy? Bicycles with a dual battery set-up are far more expensive than ones that come with a single battery (all other things being equal), so if you want two batteries you're paying for two batteries either way. But with the benefit that you don't have to carry two batteries with you everywhere, only on particularly long trips.
I want a touring bike with more range for my upgrade so I was targeting something like the Supercharger. Now I think the new Charger4 + Range Extender is the way to go. You can go with the single 750Wh for a lot of your rides and save weight on the bike. Then you bring 1 or 2 Range Extender batteries for the long touring days. The flexibility is perfect.
@@Propelbikes I use a Burley Travoy trailer for shopping and errands. There are days when it's easy to quickly do 60-70 km hauling the trailer for multiple errands. It's hilly where I live so I end up using more power assist when hauling loads which means I drain the battery more quickly. Having a couple of Range Extenders is like having that bag interchangeable batteries for my power tools. Swap in a fresh battery, drop off the groceries, then head out on the next errand.
In short no. But to go deeper we actually have quite a few customers in Utah. We can deliver fully assembled and fortunately most service items can be handled at most shops which are trained on Bosch. Also due to our focus on selling these bikes it's usually pretty easy for us to diagnose what's going on with a bike without it even being in the shop and we have staff dedicated to support our remote customers. We also help other shops if they get jammed up for some reason. We'd love the opportunity to earn your business. I encourage you to reach out to us through our website propelbikes.com
Just because a shop is Bosch certified, it doesn't mean they know electrical diagnostics and troubleshooting beyond what the diagnostic tool tells them. The certification is just a fee, a branding class, an impossible to fail test, and a usb tool. Look for service shops that will work on ebikes or are ebike specific and assess them by their staffs competency, knowledge, and background. Not the branding they advertise.
@@Propelbikes curious to hear how that works out. I would order parts from you if it were confirmed to work on our bikes. Gazelle, Tern, etc. seem like perfect candidates for the Automatiq.
Congrats on your kid, you'll be a great dad I am sure. I like the idea of the Powermore, 250 it seems like a lighter weight option to having two batteries in the frame. I was looking over the newest models, and was a bit disappointed to see the Homage 4 did not come with an Enviolo Automatiq option. Not that I'm adverse to shifting, but after testing the Nevo and the Serial 1 with the Enviolo Automatiq... I'm kind of a fan. Glad to see an increase in the Kiox 500 in size, and ABS is welcome. I live in a region with a lot of hills at varying grades. From a cost and upkeep point of view, I can see some issues.
Just add another comment similar to discussing a wider angle to the situation regarding not being able to upgrade items post purchest from riese muller?
do you mean like changing the display or the battery or the motor? They definitely are some things I can be upgraded afterwards, but there are some limitations to that.
Example my kiox is 1330, I am of an age where it would be nice electrically if the bigger screens could be used,on my bike , anti lock brakes, dropper seats etc these items also would make my bike safer for me instead at the moment it seems that the items mentioned seem only available at the point of order.have you had time to check the dummy cover that can be fitted th my 500 does tube battery to allow me to alternate using single 500 for town use as mentioned my bike is a vero late December 2022 fitted with dual battery. Please do not feel offended with my comments,I find your videos great,Chris, and the team come over as concerned, and compassionate people carry on the good work
Hi Chris, Good to see your latest video on the latest riese&muller updates on the 2004 season. Regards the updates mentioned would certain things mentioned(GPS) etc be available on my Vero gt performance line 6x motor December 2002 sometime also say certain software Say kiox up to the 300 model? May I say I feel that me being a retired person I got the best bike I could afford, it is a shame that to enhance the bike further in status I cannot like my other cycles do so ,it doesn't do the name of riese&muller credit. I as a customer feel that the only update would to expend a lot of money and purchase a new bike to do so,ridiculous. Having a dual 500Wh batteriey on board is on short runs I would like to improve the weight situation and run on one battery,I would like to alternate them, therefore can you tell me please the part number for the dummy front cover please. Regards Michael Green United Kingdom
Do you put your baby in the carseat in your cargo bike? I have a RM load 60 and a 3 month old, and I really want to bike with her as soon as possible, but I figured she was too young still
I have taken her on the bike in the car seat as early as 3 months, but in very controlled environments like parks mostly. At 6 months I started to feel a lot more comfortable. I think having the full suspension really helps.
@@Propelbikes Thats awesome, I'll be giving it a try around our neighborhood soon. I agree the full suspension is really great. Also according to my wife who has sat in the cargo hold (frunk?) thus far lol. Congratulations on your daughter by the way!
I was wondering about that. I had made some inquires but didn't get the answer I wanted. I will contact your store at some point. Thanks! DD@@Propelbikes
Can't wait the future of ebikes when battery packs get smaller/more power with a successor to lithium. We will see a new generation of e-bikes that are lighter that go more distance. The cutting edge now is just the beginning.
I tried an R&M bike for the first time and found it felt draggy (UBN 6 silent). Totally surprised me as the blurb about the bike advertised it as being very smooth on the pass through as if it was meant to ride similarly to a push bike when no assistance is switched on. I'd rather ride a normal pushbike if that's what an ebike is supposed to feel like. So what is the R&M ethos? Is it to sell ebikes to people who don't want much electric assistance or like their ebike to feel just like a pushbike? Seems like the opposite of what an ebike is meant to provide in terms of utility? For the amount of money these bikes cost I'm staggered to see that people regard them as one of the pinnacles of the ebike vanguard. I've ridden Lime rental bikes that feel more fun to ride. Just one person's opinion. Don't assassinate me for sharing my experience.
I encourage you to try a Bosch powered R&M. I think it’s likely you’ll have a very different experience. Also, keep in mind that there are varying levels of efficiency, depending on the drivetrain you choose. The Vario is very easy to use, but it does lack the efficiency of the other drivetrains
Bosch can bring ABS to America but NOT the NYON?? Stupid. I wish they would focus their tech on ANTI-THEFT. Batteries and displays should be removable (Kiox, this means you). When I park the e-bike in public I want to immobilize it. Also, any bike I spend thousands on I want the right-to-repair the common parts like brakes and shifters. I am dismayed Bosch is preventing the consumer's choice to add a dongle to increase the speed output. I love Bosch quality and prefer their motor but not if it becomes so proprietary that it becomes Big Brother Bosch controlling what I can change or improve as I, the consumer, choose to do.
The only option for a guy with a 25" inseam leg to safely stand over a bike is a Step-Through frame. With all of the Over-Step frames, the top tube is too high to safely stand over the bike. The Charger4 Mixte has a Mid-Step frame and it is too high to stand over safely. For me, the best choice comes down to Nevo4 and Culture Mixte. The range on the new Culture Mixte might not be long enough though. Looking for a bike with 100 mile range.
Not a fan of the Culture design. Looks like someone ran a smooth brush over it in a 3D modelling program, or like they took cues from a rose gold Apple product. I like the angular looks of the other models way more.
Thank you for your video, but 10k for a bike, but can someone please justify me the price, im blind i dont see what im paying for, customer service??? All i see from the Riese & Muller is that they do Customer service i dont see innovations. Im willing to buy a bicycle, but there are none of the preference i want: Fully carbon frame +Full Suspension +Belt Drive electric bike, probably due to some relulations they cant replace allumimum frame with a carbon frame, they never say what can be improved or what they working on. Im not going to buy a Delote for 8k this is haft price of a NEW CAR, but what its involve to make a car is much more complicated that make electric bike, again we a lack of technology innovations. Probably the best pick is Specialized VADO BELT Drive for 2.700$
I guess I'm old school. I paid $1500 for my hub-drive bike 5 years ago. It's got hydraulic brakes, headlight, taillight and a bell. I would pay $500 more for mid-drive, maybe another couple hundred for Bosch branding. All the rest is for people with more money than ... My phone does everything else. *Note. He thinks that Americans aren't familiar with shifting. I think that it's the Europeans that are not enamored with shifting since most of the city commuting that I see doesn't require a gearbox.
If you have a single battery technically you may be able to plug one into the charge port and put it inside the box. There likely will not be a factory option for it though

thanks so much for sharing your experience! I love all the integration on the bikes these days, but there’s something about that original Delite with dual batteries. It's really tough looking! I wish you many more happy miles ahead
What is the difference between Roadster4 and Charger4? Why would one get one over the other?
Hey Chris I love your informative videos. My only suggestion would be mentioning the prices of these bikes and features in your videos. Saves us further research later. Thanks for your great videos... :)
Thanks! Perhaps we can add them into the description? Adding into the video can be challenging and there are different prices for different regions so I don't want to confuse people.
Prices would soon be out of date.
Maybe just a dollar sign equivalent like what restraints do. A scale of $-$$$$ scale?@@Propelbikes
Appreciate your style of video mate. Really good work and informative without being overly sales-y.
Feature creep is worrying. More cost. More weight. More things that need maintenance.
Your channel is EXCELLENT!
I have a bike With Enviolo Automatiqe. And I absolutely love it
ABS ? Yes yes yes ! That will be difference between falling over and sliding along getting road rash
Or
Stopping before a collision.
Battery vs batteries ? I like option. If you go too far with one battery you are stuck trying to get back pedaling an 80# bike . So if you do proper planning and you realize too close to running out you throw on second battery. Kinda like flying small plane you don't want to run out fuel before you get to next runway
What about about a regen system that adds in power as you pedal ??
13:55 how do you get to this screen with control points?? I have a smart system bike.
I believe you need to control it in the app
Can you up grade the old/origina Purion display to the new one? I have a Gazelle Medeo T10 Plus with the extra Battery Kit.
Unfortunately not. The Purion 200 is made to work with the Smart System only. You could consider the Kiox or Nyon though. We've upgraded some Gazelle's with these.
Really loving your videos!!
Very good overview, thank you very much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Chris for this video! Will you get the chance to review the Pinion MGU at one point in time and let us know what you think of it ?
Thanks! Much appreciated! I definitely look forward to checking out the Pinion in person. I’ve heard mixed reviews so far I think it’s very challenging to do what they are doing so I really respect them undertaking the challenge. They have been working on this concept for about 10 years so I hope it performs as expected
I was looking at two batteries to alternate them to be cooler to stop the chances of them igniting???
Things I look forward to for ebikes:
- solid state batteries for weight, capacity and safety improvements
- full Integration of all electric components to be driven by the main battery
- ride by wire without a chain or belt to reduce maintenance
- geared hub motor to provide range of hearing
Thanks for the updates as usual, Chris. I'm disappointed in the integration of the battery on the Culture. This will inevitably add unnecessary costs for the for consumer when it comes to having to replace and it also takes power away from the consumer by making it very difficult to do a simple task like changing the battery. It's the wrong way to go. ABS - as long as it's an option and not forced, it's just not necessary for most people. I like the GPS tracking and locking feature of the new bosch systems. Now that's useful!
I have a Yuba Mando Cargo bike a bike, so will this work for me the extra small battery you speak of
Only if it has a smart system
Does the packster 2 have the ability to accept the new 250wh range extender battery? Not sure if I saw you mention that.
I have a charger4 , my research indicated the powermore was not compatible with the early smart system bikes.
I believe its possible but the charge port might need to be changed
Looking forward to superdelite 4 . I wish they introduce sooner.
Interesting that they didn’t upgrade the Superdelite. I would love to be able to upgrade to the Kiox 500. I do see the thinking of the Delite with the Powermor upgrade.
Thanks for educating us about E-bikes!
Thanks David!
Cheers
Chris - Auto is also on the Swing - My wife's model has it
I recently was thinking of trading in my Cube Kathmandu 625 45 (which is 62 cm) in on an Homage, but found the frame sizes so small.
These bikes are SO slick! I love 'em. (I wish I could afford them!! lol)
Definitely makes the N+1 formula difficult
that pastel pink hue! My favorite!
great video
I don’t understand the appeal of dual battery on the bike. If I want a second battery (or a third, or a fourth, or a fifth), I just bring the extra battery/batteries in my bag. No need for the cost of the extra mount.
But how heavy is it to carry though? And also how expensive to buy another battery?
Sounds like we share the same perspective
@@Propelbikes I use a Burley Travoy trailer for shopping and errands. There are days when it's easy to quickly do 60-70 km hauling the trailer for multiple errands. It's hilly where I live so I end up using more power assist when hauling loads which means I drain the battery more quickly. Having a couple of Range Extenders is like having that bag interchangeable batteries for my power tools. Swap in a fresh battery, drop off the groceries, then head out on the next errand.
The only new thing about Packster2 is the Bosch Smart system. Is that correct?
Pretty much
I live in Utah. If I bought a Riese and Muller bike and.needed service would I need to ship it off to you?
This is me subscribing, thanks to Tara ;)
Awww!!! Thanks Eve!
The culture is not the first bike from r&m with no front suspension. The ubn five is. I don t know if that bike is available in america.
Will you offer Automatiq retrofits?
I think we will in the off season if we can get parts and approval
Honestly, I wish Bosch starts a program selling refurbished batteries. These things are pretty expensive to replace!
Please do not feel offended with my comments,I find your videos great,Chris, and the team come over as concerned, and compassionate people carry on the good work
14:53 👍 If Tara says I should like the video I do 😀
Thanks from Tara... And Chris 😄
Hi Chris,
Good to see your latest video on the latest riese&muller updates on the 2004 season.
Regards Michael Green

I wish more colors were available on the Super Charger and I HATE mat/flat colors!! DD
We could always do a custom color
I was wondering about that. I had made some inquires but didn't get the answer I wanted. I will contact your store at some point. Thanks! DD@@Propelbikes
Give us a shout and let them know Chris sent you. We'd love to accommodate you.
Agree entirely
Right to repair!
And a throttle on these anal things!
You’re not the national service center for rohloff. Stoppit, CHRIS.
It is "energy" or "battery charge" not power when you talk Wh, Chris :)
I'd recommend the 43cm Nevo4, it's a really solid bike.
I hope you gonna have a trade in of bikes in your shop specially people who already your customers..
Thanks! We do actually
@@Propelbikes that’s great! Thinking about the load4 75 dual battery with ABS system… i got the load4 75 HS

I think that it's the Europeans that are not enamored with shifting since most of the city commuting that I see doesn't require a gearbox.
a super lightweight ebike that's 46 pounds with no suspension? c'mon now.
Mine is 35 😂
It's not the lightest. But a mid drive motor...
It’s all relative

Why?
Does the packster 2 have the ability to accept the new 250wh range extender battery? Not sure if I saw you mention that.

If you have a single battery technically you may be able to plug one into the charge port and put it inside the box. There likely will not be a factory option for it though
