I really enjoy the way you put your videos together. The historical information, the musing on what things might be, and your friendly “conversation” with your watchers is all very entertaining. Your excitement a with a great find is a delight. I especially like the long, close-up views of what you find.
Lovin' the story of the thistle. Thanks as always for such a pleasant way to pass the time.
Much appreciated and thanks for watching
Both of your channels are really great 👍 keep it up
Thank you so much 😀
Your excitement is contagious! Congratulations! Well done. 😊 Looking forward to your next dig.
Thanks Maureen. Much appreciated
John the silver half crown of George wow,and the big buckle along with the rest of your finds this is what makes your channel no 1thanks again cheers
hi john the toy is 1950s Vintage Dinky Studebaker Tanker Mobilgas No 440 Issued 1954
Wow 🤩 what an identification!! Top drawer! Amazing! Thanks so much
John, could that big block of lead be a tally marker. Lead was soft enough that one could punch in Mark's to signify counts. That could be the dots in the boxes. It looked like it was similar markings on both sides. The video was great as usual, love the history you teach us! Thanks!
What a great day for you John, and that Half Crown coin is the best (it made me laugh that you didn't mention George III's "potato head").
You need a bit of a break after that haul! Well done! Finding that thistle at the end was the perfect cap on this excellent day.
Many thanks James. The George iii is a beauty isn’t it… and the toning on the coin is 🤩
37:46 in the pioneer settlement of America many people would have starved had there not been "Blessed Thistlle" to eat. The stem is full of protein. Blessings!
Well I never knew that! Many thanks
indeed the first find is a pocket watch cover in silver, the hallmarks are german and its the crown and moon if i recall correctly
👍👍you put out a ton of content and I love it all!!
I’m glad to hear it. When I get days of I create and bank it and then in the evenings I edit…. My day is never done 😂
Discovered your channel yesterday when one popped into my Recommended videos. I’ve subscribed and have a lot of catching up to do. From the ones I’ve watched, great content and narration. Great channel🎉 Happy Digging
The half crown is amazing. As worn as that coin is, the date still jumps off at you!!! I've known the thistle as a symbol of Scotland for many moons but had never heard the back story, thanks for sharing that. Cheers.
My pleasure and thanks for watching
Hi John, spectacular finds. My wife found a watch back similar to yours metal detecting made of coin silver. Which is melted 90% American silver coins.
You should start doing a monthly giveaway of some of your more common coins. It will draw more people to your channel.
You’ve read my mind John! It’s on the to do list!
SCORE! Really wonderful day, John! Congrats!
Wow. From the streets of Edinburg to the fields of Perthshire!
23:55 - Lead was commonly used as a dowel for iron fixtures in masonry.
Ahh! That makes sense. Thanks 😊
Has anyone ever noticed that when fields are spread with muck the wind is always blowing in your direction.
As always, yours is the best channel out there, John and I look forward to watching every video. As a detectorist here in the US, something 150 yrs old is a prize to most of us! Thanks for letting me live vicariously!
Please come to scotland and detect with us. 3 weeks ago I was detecting near the Moray coast close to ancient hillfort and found 2 wee roman silver and what I think might be a celtic broach, but I will know more when I hear back from the museum. There is always more to find here.
I swear I posted this, but now can't find it. The watch case: I believe the "OIHOO" is actually "0,800" which is 80% silver, otherwise known as German silver. The moon and part-worn symbil to the right of it is a "moon and crown", also a German silver mark. Very nice find.
Loved the story of the Thistle! Have never heard of that battle in 1263. Very interesting!!
Quick search, German silver mark half moon with crown (?), Swiss made watch - Halbmond und Reichskrone (Half Moon and Imperial Crown): Silver ≥ 800‰ fine
I have no idea if its right - but its a beautiful case John!
Oh wow Dave! That would be amazing 🤩 thanks for your effort, much appreciated
What a day ! ..the half crown spectacular ... loved the thistle history... a whole army brought down by the prickley locals ! 😂
Many thanks 😊
1st time I heard the story of the thistle. Definitely a brilliant one if true 😁 Well done on the George Silver. What a stonker. Great stuff John 😉
A good day's digging. The George III silver is beautiful!
Many thanks, a real beauty
Up 3p had me in stitches! 😅 Fantastic finds as always, John!
Many thanks! Much appreciated
Wonderful day of finds.
What a great view lovely coin😊
Well done John, some great finds, you deserve a large pint tonight .
Thanks for this video. Congrats on your other Chanel .
😊
Much appreciated
Wow wow wow …the George 3rd half crown.. probably the best George 3rd coin I’ve seen you find so well done ..
You was due a good day …
Many thanks Chris. A real beauty isn’t it, I think the patchy tone makes it look even better!!
The saddle badge is very interesting to my personally. Hugh McLachlan was a saddler from 1807-1811 in your area
Wow what a day, thanks for sharing
Many thanks 😊
Love this channel. It’s so nice to be able to not only amazing views for us it also has great finds and an awesome history lesson. Think that’s my favorite part of this channel is how much historical information you provide.
Great finds and congratulations on the big half crown. I believe the toy is the back of a truck that hauled fuel. Looked like there were the outline of two doors on the back. The pipe looking things on top were different fuel chambers.
Amazing Mike!! Thanks 🚛
The big peice of lead is lead cell off a 1920s glass battery
What an awesome dig!
Just a few holes! lol - The George III coin is gorgeous! Very nice find. Love the silver pocket watch cover too. Worth digging all those holes for 😀
Amen!! I was knackered I can tell you 😆
@@thescottishdetectorist lol I bet you were!!
@@thescottishdetectorist lol I bet you were!! Slept well that night too no doubt.
5:11 is a pocket watch lid of German make. It has hallmarks showing a crescent moon and a crown. Then on the left side is 0.800 hallmark. This is how watchmakers define the purity of silver. 800 silver together with the hallmarks of the German Reich makes it 1871 to 1918. I found those very often here in Brandenburg
Wow!fantastic day
I dug 80 holes the last visit on a new permission. Not a single coin and only 4 items of interest. The rest aluminium or bits of copper, all registering coin on the ID. I got to teh point I was walking away from the signals and looking for lower tones!!! So you did very well in comparison John!!! How is it your fields have so many coins!!!! 30:12 is a petrol tanker body. You aren't old enough to remember these are you mate.👍👍😉
What a great day you had! Well done!
Much appreciated a cracking day of tiring!!
There's me shouting at the screen like a loon. 30:25 You unearthed the back of a Dinky Studebaker Mobilgas Tanker. Made by Dinky between 1954 and 1961 with the product number 440. Keep up the good work - we love watching your very entertaining and informative videos.
That lead piece you found at 28 minutes into the video is clearly the lead poured into a mold to make an ingot of reusable lead. For example, when i recover lead from any source, such as tire balance weights, I then melt them and pour them into a mold to make ingots to then be used to make fishing sinkers for example. The grid markings in the surface of the ingot is to enable you to cut it somewhat accurately to then melt smaller pieces that end up being sized properly to fill your lead molds for sinkers or whatever you might mold lead for.
VERY nice George III 'bull' head Sterling Silver Half Crown!
Hi, re: possible pocket watch back, I have been told that if a magnet sticks to it - it will be plated. Last but not least, the iconic thistle. Cheers and have a good week.
The finds were worth the stench lol! That 1817 coin is amazing!
Another good video john that half crown is a real beauty, for some strange reason i can't get Dalmatians out of my head.
Well done great video as usual, I enjoyed the hunt. 🇺🇸
I'm so glad you had a sunny day. Good job you dug the shabby signal &:got rewarded with the silver. Excellent.! The E P on your watch casing may be electro plated , but hopefully it's a manufacturing code. Take care. Bless up 👊
Cheers Nick. It is electro plate is think 😢 oh well!
Great video as always John amazing silver finds and some social history with saddlers badge thanks for sharing keep up the hard work mate 👍
Well we decided to spend the last night of our hol to celebrate our anniversary too by staying in with a takeaway to watch your video and what a great decision that was! 🤩🤩🤩 what fantastic finds and a beautiful silver George half crown too, and OMG 100;holes! Well done you and a fantastic watch 🎉 What is a ‘Stoater’? 😂😂😂
Haha 😂 oh no, hope I didn’t ruin the holiday!! A stoater is a Scottish word it means beautiful or very nice!! 😂
😂 I’ll remember that one! No hol not spoilt but your vids have kept us entertained late night here in Croatia, best viewing - thanks John, keep them coming and the amazing things your so lucky to find 😀
An excellent lot of finds John well done, me and Pauline have never counted how many holes we've dug in one session but you've just made it a challenge 😁
I’d have never realised I’d dig 101 holes if I hadn’t counted them all out! Unreal
Fantastic effort 👍🏻 brilliant
Love the thistle story. You maybe would be speaking Norwegian if not for the thistle. 😊
101 holes is an impressive feat. Enjoyed it.
Much appreciated Tanja
Yesss 😂 🇳🇴
That is a stoater of a George III coin. Another great find and video.
Yes it is maybe the front or back of a pocket watch . Notice the hinge area .
Thanks Tony. Thanks for confirming
Very lovely and thorough tour of a Scottish field, Thank you!
hi john not bad 7 mins late i was watch you orther channel lol
Haha 😂 I forgive you Alan
Great finds mate! Soon as you guessed the weight of the georgy boy half crown I got mine out and checked it and you nailed it😂😂
The George 1/2 crown is brilliant find. I do wonder what the large silver object is, I do hope you can provide us an update soon. This field is in need of further detecting, which I'm sure you will do. Cheers from Texas. See you again soon.
Much appreciated David. I’ll be back on the field first chance I get
Item 17 looks like the sleeve part of a primus stove pump, and im sure ancient relic 8:09 is the flame diffuser part for a similar/same primus wickless picnic stove..love spending time watching your finds, you have great perms there, it's wise to be coy..
That's a fuel truck John, on the end would have been the 2 doors, tho in this case they don't open, those round things on top would have been lids that you'd open to fill each compartment, so you could haul several different products. There would have been a pump within the back doors and a long hose, the cab is sadly missing along with the back wheels. A kid would have had fun with that. Circa 40s to 70s. Loved your big silver coin. Nice chunk of lead too, unknown reason for it??
Great find.
@24:07 looks like a medieval hip replacement. 😂
Haha 😂
Just got inside, heatwave outside 92° so some lunch with iced tea and the Scottish Detectorist and a few tours of Scotland are my respite! Cheers, John looking forward to the videos.
Awesome dig, thanks for taking us along!
My pleasure and thanks as ever for your support
Wow 101 holes my own knees and back felt that 😂! Always enjoyable with some amazing finds, and very interesting fact about the thistle!!
I don’t know if someone has already posted this idea, but I was thinking that the decorative lid could have been part of a woman’s compact - with make-up and/or a mirror inside?
That was what popped into my mind as soon as you showed the decorative details and noted the shape.
John, I'm intrigued by the Esri mapping you use. I'm in the US and am wondering if you'd share some insight on their service/ product?
Hi there! Many thanks, yes, it’s on my ‘to do’ list to make a wee video on research so watch this space
Hope the EP on the watch back isn't for electro plated.
Aww nawww 😢 it probably is
Fantastic content you always produce excellent viewing!💊
Much appreciated and thanks for watching
Thanks for vid.
Awesome content. 👍❤
Much appreciated and thanks for the kind words
I so enjoy you and your story telling!
Hard to tell from such a huge distance away (Los Angeles not that it matters) but the pocket watch case looks like two pieces: an outer ring and a center panel. The center panel looks very much like silver but the outer ring looks much shinier as if it is a stainless steel piece. It wouldn't surprise me that the outer ring would be a different material to add structural integrity to the thin silver it encircles. Just a guess.
You 💯 should win a award for the most random lead finds on UA-cam😂
Bull head 1/2 crown. Beauty!😊
Just purchased a deus 2 can’t wait to get out with it!!
Fantastic! Best of luck. Don’t miss @themetaldetectingskillschool Gary gives some amazing hints and tips! Best of luck and happy hunting
@@thescottishdetectorist thanks enjoying your videos, very informative! Good luck!
Say after me, "I haven't had a lot of Gold" LOL
You did sound a little bit puffed out at the end there! If all those holes were one, I reckon you'd be standing in a crater! The "EP" on the pocket watch might represent Electro plated, but it certainly looked like silver, Detecting to me is a little bit like being a kid again, discovering new and exciting things you've never seen before! I'd be happy to find coins all day, but I'm happier when there's a variety of finds, it just makes it that much more interesting, A long day, a lot of holes, and some great finds! Thanks Mate, Cheers!
Brilliant video John. As so many have said the George silver is also my favourite. Great condition too. The lead rectangle item you thought was part of a battery I first thought of ‘ Gaming ‘ some kind of game scorer with all the dots and squares on it. After all why would you put those marks on a battery cell 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Thanks for sharing John. 🤗👍
I think the toy is a die cast tanker truck.
Amazing thanks 😊
39.40 looks like Great War British Army Crossed Rifles w/wreath Metal Trade Badge i could see indentation of two crossed rifles and crown and wreath look it up on google and you will see similar badge with holes like that too x
Amazing, thanks so much for your help!! Amazing 🤩
Very interesting.
Let’s go, let’s go treasure and adventure🌺💕👵✌️
Thanks for sharing the day. Could you put the georgian on its edge and show us the shift in reading? Nice use of mapping info:love that!
Great hunt that John and that George the 3rd 😍😍 well done mate 💪💪💪💪💪
The first thing I thought when I saw the decorated silver was part of a powder compact.
I really enjoyed your video John, I can't believe the similarities to my permission which I'm on tomorrow regarding the old path from the farm buildings across the fields. I looked at old maps today from the early 1800s an noticed a path similar to yours. I'm planning on doing that tomorrow, fingers crossed mate 🤞
Enjoy your channel from Georgia. Sure would love to come over and find some old stuff.
28:29 with all the leas you handle it might be a good time to take a detoxicant or iron to counteract absorption.
I got quite ill and hospitalized after fluoride poisoning at the dentist!
Aluminum is also a neuro toxin especially. When fluoride is in the blood... toothpaste, etc. I am using a detoxicant from England and one from here. It takes a few months but it's been decades for me. God bless. Ps look up symptoms for aluminum, lead and fluoride poisoning or toxicity.
Arsenic is also in the food and ground. Xoxo
Oh no!! I really need to wear gloves!!
That Toy Train looks a bit like the 1930's Pacific class of Steam Locomotive. Think 'The Mallard'
the wee thing you call a key escutcheon at 24:40 is in fact the catch from ladies stockings :)
George 3rd silver you lucky devil 👍
Don’t get many of them I tell you!!
Another great day detecting
Congratulations amazing!!
Back pice of a pocketwatch I think😊
Amazing thanks for confirming
Can you keep any of the coins or do you have to turn them all in? I do enjoy both of your channel.
Hi Donald. Anything of age or antiquity has to be reported to the museum. A lot of what I find I give to the farmers, anything else I keep for my collection.
@@thescottishdetectorist Thanks was wondering it's something that have never heard you say. Knew oldest things went to museums. Thanks again.
Congrats on that massive silver Crown! The pocket watch cover is Electro Plated. I saw the EP on the back. Sounds like a hot tub would do you a world of good.
Can you send me the link to your other channel John? Im having trouble finding it but I'm not good at the phone bro. I'm wanting to check it out and support your fame. I always can't wait to watch the next dig.
The find at 24:20 is probably a corset fastener.
