The Americans build their base of Saigon on top of a tunnel network that was used against the French Earlier. This allowed the Vietcong to sneak into the base and steal supplies from the Americans, without them ever finding out.
True, they even listen to their conversations in the tunnels below that's why it confused them all the time as to who leaked important intel to the Vietcong and always thought they had a spy among them
As a logistical feat, the Tet Offensive was amazing. As a shocking part of news, especially for the American people who had been told for months that the North Vietnamese had no more fight left in them, it was impressive. As a military operation, it failed horribly. After initial shock, American troops fought back and stopped or took back all lost territory within 2-3 hours. But the real damage was done on the homefront. Politicians and the American public started to drift away from supporting the conflict.
Exactly. 100,000 people with thousands of tons of weapons Suddenly appeared everywhere and began to attack according to conventional warfare. How can such a large number of soldiers and weapons freely enter the area occupied by American soldiers.
Most importantly the VC jumped out of nowhere and managed to capture the US Embassy in 6 hours, despite heavy casualties but it made a significant turning point for the US public view of the Vietnam War
Came to say this. American forces knew the Tet Offensive was coming, prepared extensively for it, and turned it into a slaughter. It effectively destroyed the Viet Cong (communist forces in the south). Most of the remaining combat was done by the North Vietnamese Army after that. However, because it was televised in America, it was the turning point of public opinion against the war.
@@asmodiusjones9563The US media has exaggerated the combat effectiveness of the US military. Just the thought of huge insects, rats, and poisonous snakes would give me the creeps gong down there in those tunnels. I see why my brother-n-law joined the Navy(1968-72) instead of the Army.🤦🏾♂
Lots of respect. They were resilient and resourceful against a technologically superior force and through sheer grit they defended their country against invaders. If this were France and the Americans were the Germans they would have been heroes. They deserve to have a movie made about them because they were pretty impressive.
They are still heroes. They are the inspiration of many countries in Africa and Latin America. As you see, even enemies respect them. Vietnamese people today are respected by the world
You have to admit the Viet Cong and NVA had a lot of guts to be able to live in those deplorable conditions almost 24/7 for months and years in those dark and cold tunnels
Those were built by the VC not the NVA. The NVA were conventional forces and lived in military bases. And sure there were some NVA that lived in this tunnel. But they were rare.
Ngl I've always thought underground civilizations were dope AF. I love the idea of living underground and while I wouldn't want to in this fashion I think an underground city would be badass.
I crawled through one of the tunnels, just as a tourist, long after the war, but learned that the tunnels had been widened for American tourists. While a lot of young American men had the best of intentions in that war, what was done to Vietnam was hideous, and the behavior of American troops was sometimes despicable . Agent Orange, which is carcinogenic and causes birth defects, was spread over an area the size of Massachusetts. Our country has yet to acknowledge its role in scarring the DNA of a nation.
When I was doing pest control I had a customer who was a tunnel rat from 67-69. He says if you ever want an adrenaline rush go into an enemy tunnel with nothing but a 1911 and a military flashlight
When the Maori of New Zealand faced the British in the NZ wars in the nineteenth century, they had earth fortifications called Pa. Surrounded by palisades, these earth fortifications had multi layered zig zag trenches, hidden firing pits, tunnels, and bomb proof bunkers. There are documentaries on UA-cam about these wars. British historian Lindybeige on his UA-cam channel tells a fascinating tale of one such battle, called the ' battle of Gate Pa '. A riveting story about the British laying seige to, and then storming, a Maori Pa. outnumbered and outgunned, they proved formidable opponents. The British could not believe that mere savages could have such ingenuity and innovation in warfare. The story teller does a wonderful job of setting the scene, heightening the suspense, and describing the carnage. You'll see why Maori pop up on all top 10 greatest warrior lists alongside the Spartans and Samurai.

Underground tunnels have proven effective in defending against enemy attacks so that the Vietcong can survive the onslaught of American troops... Until now underground tunnels are still used for In war tactics. For example, Hamas troops in the Gaza strip use underground tunnels for defense against Israeli troops
I was in the chu chi tunnels north of saigon in 2005, very small - fun fact, the mongols invaded the area of vietnam as it was back then, 3 times and 3 times were repelled, in the end they made a deal to become like a commonwealth, also the area of afghanistan the mongols could not conquer fully also, so its in their blood not to be pushed around
They’re in the trees, they’re in the ground, and soon they’ll even be in the goddamn walls.

Sau khi Mỹ rút khỏi Việt Nam thì 1.200.000 lính này không bị tàn sát mà bắt đem đi cầm tù, giáo dục, cải tạo. 😂

The truth is that the Americans had to mobilize 1.5 million American and South Vietnamese troops just to destroy 100,000 VC troops without heavy weapons and struggled for 3 months in Hue to be able to retake this city.
@@tinhhoangvan9327 Battle of Hue took only 26 days, the VC and NVA took only 4 hours to capture most of the city but American and SVN took 26 days to took it back

There is a U.S. Army training video on UA-cam from 1969 titled “Tunnel Destruction”. Details how these tunnels were to be dealt with and tools used. Interesting watch. The video is optimistic to say the least.
If they had to represent the crude reality of tunnel cleaning the troops would've been histerically demoralized to even try and do it.
I remember as a kid in the 80s there was a GI Joe named Tunnel Rat.

They were taking rotations
they were vermin

This reminds me the moment in CoD BO.
I tried to save my teammate but it is always too late
I crawled through one of the tunnels, just as a tourist, long after the war, but learned that the tunnels had been widened for American tourists.
While a lot of young American men had the best of intentions in that war, what was done to Vietnam was hideous, and the behavior of American troops was sometimes despicable . Agent Orange, which is carcinogenic and causes birth defects, was spread over an area the size of Massachusetts. Our country has yet to acknowledge its role in scarring the DNA of a nation.
War is horrific. US never acknowledges its war crimes.
