  • I finish up the last area of the dynamic jaw that needs machining. This time we'll use the G&E shaper to make easy work of a hard to reach area that would be more difficult to machine using conventional rotating cutters.

Old shaper kickin' a$s and takin' names right there. Love these old machines that built our world, and then the machines that went next level. That's a get it done machine. I gotta say it's sexy. I'm a machinist by trade, and I make prototype parts daily. (but I have collected some vintage machines). Deserved respect to the G&E Adam.

Always stand to the side when starting a grinder wheel until it reaches full speed. Someone could have banged the wheel and cracked it or a temperature fluctuation could have damaged it. Or do the ring test if you don’t have 3 seconds to let it get to full speed.

You are correct. However, even if it is very watchable it makes hours more in camera placement and replacement, more than one, less than 5 is about right. Then you got your editing time, watch through at speed to check for context and continuity. We have seen a few of those over the years, and don't think it didn't hurt three times as much to watch for the crew as for us. Doubled scenes, bad mic in placement and volume. He is learning by doing. So I say, give him and crew a break and just have Abbie operate the shaper for a series of apprentice projects, she videos and edits with any assistance be provided.

Adam, something to keep an eye on that I noticed in the slow-mo at ~ 9:15. The stepover takes place when the cutter is at its full backstroke. However when you have the cutter only clear the back of the workpiece by a very small amount, you risk the stepover starting before the cutter is fully clear of the workpiece. I know you like to make the stroke very close to the workpiece width to reduce the cutting time (no sense in having it cut air : ), however the stepover takes some time to complete, and with a fast stroke speed, you risk putting side pressure on the cutter before it has cleared on the backstroke. Just a thought after watching.
Also, loving anything in the old shop, thats where I learned to love your channel 👍

As long as you take light cuts on the horizontal surface there is absolutely no problem having the clapper in the "wrong" way. The tool will indeed dig in on the back stroke onece you touch the vertical surface.

Down the road many miles from here is a steam museum. in there are some scraper worked machines with finish that is every bit the equal of a modern CNC surface. All those intricacies that you tell us about and perhaps much more was known to those tradesmen a hundred years ago. Building steam locomotives and mechanical presses of such precision, that todays kid will be gobsmacked to see was done so well, so long ago. I dont know if hand scraping would have been used on some of the work but it had to have been honed on the flat for the finish on a selection of the equipment on display.

Shaper work looks great! I am surprised that you didn’t use the shaper to beautify the long case that bolts onto the vide itself. To me it would be a worthwhile extra step that would make your completed vise that much more “professional “! All the best to you Adam.

  • @andyfields3248

Wasn't explained well but I think what he is saying is . . . if the tool digs and the holder will want to rotate counter clockwise. If it were to rotate counter clockwise that would increase the depth of cut and crash. If the tool were already rotated slightly past center and it digs and rotated counter clockwise the depth of cut would decrease, reducing the load on the cutter. With it hanging out to the side that far it wouldn't be practical to accomplish this so he is left taking a bit of a risk here.

I have ALWAYS liked running the shaper just to get away from the super finnish tolerances of tool and die maker.
Our main large shaper was too close to a big surface grinder we all used a lot and I want to say when running the surface grinder while you were doing work on the shaper with tool steels some of them chips could set you're pants on fire lol.
