They're all gone, String, Grandpa, Lester, et. al. Such great entertainers. Didn't need an exploding stage or a bunch of effects to sell their act, just raw talent. You were classics. Rest in peace.
I had the honor to meet this gentle fellow in 1968 while I worked at WLW-T in Cincinnati on the Midwestern Hayride Show. I have met many celebrities, many stars of country music who would never remember my name. Not so Stringbean. Stringbean was the nicest celebrity I ever met, humble, showed concern for the lowest set-up-fellow, totally unaffected in the way he related to everyone. He was genuine. What a loss to music in America.
My family was on vacation in Nashville when Stringbean was killed. I'll never forget that or the Ryman atmosphere. I got to meet Tex Ritter and see Roy Acuff do a yo yo trick. God bless them all.❤
I drive a 97 VW Rabbit. Love blaring this song when the gas pedal is on the floor swerving in and out through cars in my small but quick car. My first car . Never gettig rid of it. Run little Rabbit , Run!

I saw String on the shows quite often and have grown to appreciate just how good a banjo player he was with the frailing style. I remember when he and Estelle were killed. It was a shock to everyone.

What is so sad to me is that I did not see him in the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. I looked for his name in both. Bill Monroe once called him the finest banjo player he knew. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform as a child.
Classic! Loved Stringbean Dave Akeman. Awesome! Amazing to see him and Earl Scruggs together. What a shame String was murdered by a greedy family member.A great loss to old time country music. 😞❤️
I grew up in the 60s with rock and rock. I remember my uncles and grandparents laughing and having a good time with Stringbean on the TV. I get it now. He was great. I might be a slow learner.

Stringbean used to stop by Shelby, NC and play music with Lester Flat and Earl Scruggs and perform in theaters where my father worked. That was before I was born. Daddy NEVER grew tired of any of them...and yes Stringbean's pants were worn low, not to show his bottom, but because Stringbean was also a comic.
Stringbean will always be one of the best country & bluegrass ever offered. It is rare these days to find unique individuals like String in the music business.
This is kinda like a dream come true - seeing good ole Stringbean in full-on action, in the company of the fabulous Lester & Earl and the Foggy Mountain Boys. What a treasure this footage is !! Thanks so much for posting it on site !!

"Bean was greatly loved by all the other country artists. I used to love it when Porter Wagoner had him on his show. Stringbean would keep him laughing the whole show. Porter even adopted his signature hand gesture. They used to travel and do shows a lot together and Porter could tell some great tales from those times. Porter had to do the driving, though. Stringbean never was licensed to drive and never drove, anywhere. His wife, Estelle, did all his driving for him. I still miss him. RIP Stringbean. Hope the fish are bitin' in Heaven.
I've often wondered but just wrote it off as one of his quirks, I guess. Grandpa Jones, probably his best friend second to his wife, couldn't understand it either. They went in and bought 'Bean's farm together and later got him a tractor, mostly for plowing his garden. Grandpa said he liked to have never gotten Stringbean on it, but he finally did -- only time he'd ever seen him drive anything. Whenever Grandpa was supposed to take him to the Opry, when Estelle was unable to for whatever reason, he said he'd get a call from 'Bean sometime that day: "Grandpa's gonna take me to the Opry tonight, ain't he?" LOL Porter said whenever they were together on the road, Porter driving of course, 'Bean would every once in a while say, "Boy, that Porter Wagoner sure is a good driver." LOL He was a funny man, so says Grandpa, and I think he meant funny ha-ha as well as funny kinda peculiar, but loved by all, quirks and all.
That was a wonderful video. I couldn't help but laugh, not because of his silly outfit but because he could play that banjo so well. It was a delight to watch. Thanks for posting it.

Yeah for sure, but you have to realize dressing Stringbean would be like trying to dress a mop handle LOL he is sooo thin. Nothing for clothes to hang to so they just hang off.
