On Darwin. I'm being an armchair quarterback here, but explain it like you're explaining it to a moron or a 5 year old. Never detailed explanations in those cases. When you're long winded and detailed the not so smart will stop listening. Keep explanations very short in those cases.

When I lost my faith I felt like I lost everything. The phrase "without you I am nothing." Was one of my biggest convictions, when I lost faith I felt like I my life was closing in on itself. I was Sunday school teacher, Christian Youth Leader and a Christian camp counselor, my entire identity was within the Christian Doctrine. I was lost for years with the belief that everything is meaningless.
Today I don't feel that way, I've found life with meaning outside of faith and I'm glad with it.

    • @AC-gb7do

Riley McElroy Can I ask a serious question? As a Sunday school teacher, Youth leader..did you ever wonder if telling children that God did exist, the Bible was correct, etc., was potentially hurting them rather than letting someone come to that decision, or not, on their own?
I ask because my own upbringing was “find what works for you” so I went to a few friends’ churches and Sunday schools, and a few were the “fire and brimstone” sort of lecture/teaching and they scared the crap (and belief) outta me right then and there! I couldn’t equate a loving God with punishing me forever simply for having doubts, or questioning His existence.
Anyway, I hope you’re having a great day/night whenever and wherever you’re reading this.

@@AC-gb7do At the time I was a teacher, that thought never crossed my mind. At the time I believed I was doing the Lord's work and doing good by the children I taught.
Today I hold conflicting veiws on that subject, part of thinks I could of done harm to the Children, but what I taught was mostly tolerance and love to fellow man and anti-bullying from a biblical perspective for the most part, so if what stuck with them was that they should treat others with kindness then I am great ful to be of service in that aspect, but if they grew up to be bigoted Christians then I do feel I have a part in that as well. My hope is that along the way the do make their own decisions and formulate their own beliefs whichever way they decide if it comes from their heart and mind I am ok with that.

If I were you, I would stop saying "I lost my faith." That makes it sound valuable, like I lost my keys, or I lost my money in the stock market, or I lost my true love. All you lost was a delusion--nice going, congratulations.
It also makes it sound like some unfortunate event happened to you, like you got cancer or something, when in reality you gained one of the best things a human can achieve: intellectual autonomy.
It sounds like you experienced something akin to mourning, and I can relate to that. It's normal when you have to reframe your entire world view. But as you now know, it gets better, and potentially it gets FAR better than it was.

But, Matt decided that the caller was too "arrogant," felt he was being called a "liar," hangs up and spends another minute attacking a straw-man. Whats impressive about that? Would not even allow a single premise to be stated. Matt sabotaged the discussion by assuming some kind of personal offense had taken place, and then used it as justification for hanging up, probably because he didn't want to think about what the callers argument might have been.

Matthew from South Carolina is way out of his depth. He can only see all logic and epistemology through the Biblical lens but not even his own analysis of the Bible, just what he has been told to believe. He does a good job parroting what his preacher has taught him about the Pharisees denying Jesus's (supposed) divinity. But he doesn't understand the Pharisees, what an atheist is, or anything about formal logic or epistemology. "You know what I said was true". There really is no response to that except to hang up. It is dishonest debate. Telling the other person what they know or what they believe is both arrogant and stupid.

Vitamin D is needed for bone growth, so the shade of the skincolor changes with the age, it's lighter, when you're younger, to allow for better growth and get's darker with age. That is, if you are in a constant environment. Drastically changing that will slowly change your skincolor. And if you get your Vitamin D from somewhere else, like fish, your skincolor is not under selective pressure anymore, as seen in the Eskimo population.

I think we choose what we believe when there is a need to believe in something. I was raised in the mormom church and as far as I can tell I never believed in it. I stopped going to church when I was 16, and believing that I needed some sort of God in my life I turned to Druidry. I liked the gods and goddesses but the community was scarce and really just a bunch of hippies, I combined Druidry with Wicca and possibly some other spiritualities to get what I felt I needed. So, about 10 years ago I was introduced to the Norse Pantheon dropped my old beliefs and completely adopted the Norse beliefs. I like the Gods and Goddesses and the stories. So I can say I chose those beliefs.
Very recently, I started listening to Mr Atheist, Matt Dillahunty, and many others and have finally realized I didn't actually need a god, that even though I liked the Norse pantheon there was no reason to believe they existed.
Thank you Matt for helping me drop that nonsense, it's been too much of a distraction for so long.

He still got the process of natural selection correct. His theory of evolution has been slightly modified over the past 150 years as science has progressed. What does it matter if he was for or against various races as being superior? That wasn't the crux of his theory of evolution. Believin in an afterlife IS a dangerous belief.
Because if you lose someone really important to you and find yourself in such a deep depression because of it, that the chemical reactions in your brain get messed up, you might find yourself in the mindset that you can reconnect with your loved ones if you die. And can make you take that final step and commit suicide.
I remember in one of the older episodes of the show, I think it was one with Tracie(don't remember who she hosted with), they talked about a story( I guess someone shared in an email to the show) about a little girl that couldn't handle her father's death and commited suicide "to be with her daddy" as she wrote in her suicide note. I still to this day think about this story. I myself even while getting out of religion held to the belief that there was an afterlife. And I thought it was a good harmless belief, but after that story, I am convinced that it is probably one of the most harmful beliefs because it devalues life right here and now

I wish that little girl was still alive. Her mother also said “if it wasn’t for my son, I don’t think I could handle the pain either” or something along those lines. It’s heartbreaking. I also bring up all of the children who are dead because their parents refused to take them to a doctor and instead took them to a preacher to pray for the child when they were deathly ill or not deathly ill that turned into death. It’s awful.

They can't show the difference, because it's analogous in too many ways, it's about people taking mind-altering drugs that warp how they think and feel in ways they can't control with buggy results, and warping how you think in one session doesn't make you smarter or see anything more clearly, only brute education and endless years of feedback on all our failed attempts at reason can help chip away at those problems in our thinking.
Not to mention, taking a drug that has a huge emotional impact regardless of content, is bound to appeal to our sunk cost fallacious investment architecture we come pre-equipped with, and tilt our bias to be favourable toward whatever we associate with that emotional experience, the more emotionally heavy the more risk of bias.
There's a reason we have disinterested third parties to verify, fact check, examine evidence. Police officers who get involved jeopardise cases with their investment bias, scientists who get too involved over years or take money become more distrusted, personal experience clouds our judgement.

Neither open any gateway to another dimension. I've used both hundreds of times over decades (along with STP, LSD, psilocybin, even belladonna) and if anything, my experiences strengthened my skepticism of the supernatural. The chemistry of the mind is fascinating and altering it can seemingly tear reality and the ego structure apart. One must be precise in their retrospective analysis of all their psychedelic experiences and not allow the brain to configure a false narrative (i.e. I smoked DMT and went to another dimension).

I tell you "I will give you one million dollars to believe in unicorns." Again, we will assume I actually can and will pay this. You now have a very strong incentive to believe this. Better yet, there is no down side - nothing to lose and much to gain. Despite all this, you are unable to just (CLICK) turn on this belief. Your being convinced or not convinced is a natural state you find yourself in regardless of incentives or desire. You cannot will yourself to be immediately and genuinely convinced. Of course, human imagination being what it is, with time and effort, you may be able to convince yourself. In other words self dillusion is a thing - but it is somehow a process, not an instantaneous act of will.

That's the thing. Sometimes it's difficult to drill down to what someone REALLY believes because the mind is a powerful and still very unknown thing. People can self-delude, including distract themselves if to avoid confronting whether they believe something. It says something when people pay therapists to help them understand their own minds.

Nice to have Denis on the show. Would have loved him to jump in even more on the can you choose your belief issue. Denis has had that shit right from years back if you go back and listen to the free will discussion with Matt, Denis and Jeff. Always love Matt on AE too. Nice to have him on more often. Still miss Tracie.

David was wrong when he thought Philo had something to do with the writing of Mark. Philo wrote extensively about Pontius Pilate but never mentioned Jesus in his writings. Imagine the word became incarnate during Philo's lifetime and he was oblivious to it.

I am interested in the idea that people believe that there is an afterlife. How long do they think they will be there? Eternity? Because that is a long time, and no matter how wonderful it might be there, the novelty will pall after the first few aeons.
When you swat a fly, the fly’s conscious goes black-the end.
    The same fate awaits us.

Seriously, the milky way galaxy and another galaxy collide???? You have no clue. A galactic collision isn't "an event". It is a process that takes hundreds of million years if not longer. The milky way galaxy would be a mess right now still.
Even if you sped it up and the centers collided, it would still be way longer than 9,000 years ago.

In reference to Daniel from California and his Noah "Flood" story. If the only humans alive after the flood were Noah and his family they had to have inbred and thus all humans on the planet would have similar familial physical characteristics. All humans don't and there would not be different races of humans. I have found no logical explanation for this in the bible.

Well genetic diversity is nothing new for example dogs no evolution here because all genes exist just in different combos another example is a moth that turned blue when environment changed first believed to be evolution but later scientists confirmed gene had always existed in species
