Absolutely heartbroken not to see Chip Zien in the leading actor in a musical. He gave one of the most evocative performances I've ever seen on a stage
I'm bummed Harmony was completely shut out. I was hoping Chip Zien would at least be recognized.
Same here, I was surprised when I saw that Harmony didn’t receive any nominations
So happy about the water for elephants recognition. The show was incredible and deserved every award it was nominated for
Seeing an actor/actress category get 7 nominations reminds me of how just a few years ago, only Aaron Tveit was nominated even though he wasn’t the only person eligible and this year really just shows how ridiculous and unnecessary that was.
There was a tie.
Plus Lightning Thief was terrible lol
VERY disappointed that Chip Zien was not nominated.
Surprised that Gatsby missed on Scenic Design.
Excited that newcomers were nominated.
Looking forward to your reviews of Stereophonic, Suffs, Lempicka, and The Outsiders especially.
Not everyone has Instagram or TikTok. Please put the reviews here too.
Thanks for keeping this up! I had to wait until I got home from work in the evening to watch, and it was so much fun seeing you both discuss the whole thing!
Here Lies Love did way better than I was expecting. I was surprised that The Who’s Tommy did not get more nominations overall.
Just a comment on "lead" and "featured": when the Tony Awards were in the first two decades, the designation was dependent on "billing". So (a big example) in 1958 Anne Bancroft was nominated as "Featured Actress in a Play" for TWO FOR THE SEESAW. But if you know the play, there were only two characters, so she was the lead actress. BUT the billing was "Henry Fonda in TWO FOR THE SEESAW, costarring Anne Bancroft". Since she was billed below the title, she was "Featured". Just like this year, for MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, in the initial publicity it was "Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez in MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG" with Radcliffe (the box office draw) listed first. By the old rules, Radcliffe should be "Lead" and Groff should be "Featured", but those rules no longer apply.
Isn’t there a song in the second act of Spamalot where the lady of the lake sings that she hasn’t been in the second act at all
Cabaret did a lot better than I expected after seeing the Broadway reviews. But glad to see it has, as I love the London version.
I have multiple English degrees so forgive me for latching onto what you said about The Outsiders and Great Gatsby as required reading in the US vs the UK out of all of this very interesting theatre talk but I find it so interesting that both of those are such American books. I can see how Gatsby might be a little more widely appealing, especially as I feel the way it depicts American culture is a little more glamorous and idyllic. Meanwhile The Outsiders depicts such a specific moment in American youth culture.
Predictably, these two are the two shows at the very top of my list right now. I hope I get to see both of them.
Looking forward to seeing what snacks you devise for your themed Tony viewing video lol
So glad I bought my tickets for my upcoming trip on Sunday. 💜 (Shout out to this channel for helping me make those very difficult decisions.)
I love it when you talk and the television is talking at the same time. It’s just this crazy stereo.
So happy for Leslie Kritzer. So we’ll deserved. She deserved one for Beetlejuice. She is finally getting recognition.
My pregnant self just needs to know what's in that salad...
There were 15 new musicals eligible - 10 currently running and 5 closed. They nominated 5 running shows for best musical BUT only 2 of those nominees also got best score nominations. The other best score nominees were 2 closed musicals and one play.
we really need a best song award
Help me, fellow theatre-lovers! I am going up to nyc soon and need help filling the gaps in my schedule. I have tickets for Uncle Vanya, Hell's Kitchen, Suffs, Lempicka, and Stereophonic. I have slots for 2 more. What other shows should I prioritize and why? I heard Water for Elephants, The Outsiders, and Illinoise a lot today but no idea why I would enjoy one over another. TIA!
Edit: I forgot I need to see Appropriate too 😭
See water for elephants!!!! The show overall is incredible
See Merrily! There’s so much love in this show!
Live in Portugal. Originally from NYC by way of Portland, OR. Lived 14 years in Manhattan Plaza (before Alicia Keys) Now only get to the theater in London.
Very surprised at the Water For Elephants nominations and popularity. I saw the pre-Broadway run in Atlanta and was shocked that it made it to Broadway. In Atlanta the circus acrobatics were impressive, but that was all. I give it the benefit of the doubt…perhaps they fixed some flaws before going to Broadway.
The Broadway one is absolutely incredible
I can't comment .. I'm too angry right now :(
I’m disappointed that Jeremy and Eva weren’t nominated for Gatsby. I’m also upset that Joy Woods didn’t receive a nomination for the notebook, and I’m also annoyed that Harmony was completely shut out this award season. I’m happy about the shows that were nominated though, but I can’t help but be a little disappointed. I’m super happy about Merrily we roll along’s nominations, and I’m super happy for the Outsiders cast. I’m also really happy about the nominations that the Notebook did receive, but I just wish that Joy had received a nomination as well.
Why not more for The Notebook?? Should of had a Best Musical nod
Next year you could come on goldderby, we had the information up immediately.
#JusticeForLempicka
For performances at the oscars I say the outsiders does run run brother to feature the three that got nominated. i Think Water does The world don't make you young or Zostan. Merrily will do it's a hit or opening doors. If back to the future performs may do it works or the finale song.
Question: why is Stereophonic a play and not a musical, as it has music in it? Maybe it's dumb as I haven't seen it but...
It only has one full song in it.
Will Sufs and Illinoise have cast albums?
Probably, especially if one wins for Score.
Suffs Original Broadway Cast is recording right now and album will be released June 14! 💜💛
@@user-ls9hc9fv9y thanks
I think it was interesting how Roger Bart got a Tony nomination and Hugh didn't, but at the Oliviers it was the other way round, plus Olly was nominated as well. Back to the Future in general could have been more successful during a different season, but there have been so many new musicals in the past year so it was always going to have stiff competition, plus broadway critics hated it so things never looked good for it sadly.
I agree that HERE LIES LOVE would have probably done a little better if it was still running. I’m happy it got the 4 nominations but sad it didn’t get more including best actress, best lighting and best costumes.
The reason I think Maleah Joi Moon will win Best Actress: leads who play real life musical performers almost always win (Stephanie J Block as Cher, Adrienne Warren as Tina Turner, Hugh Jackman as Peter Allen, Miles Frost as Michael Jackson); the show has 13 nominations; Kelli is in a closed show; Maryann won a Tony 37 years ago (but she would be a great choice too!). I don't think it will be Eden or Gayle.
4 nominations for "Here Lies Love"😄 but none for the first all Filipino cast on Broadway.😥
Im absolutely screaming about Stereophonic. That show deserves everything, okay.
I say Hell’s Kitchen deserves to win for Best Musical, Best Performance By A Leading Actress In A Musical (Maleah Joi Moon-Hell’s Kitchen as Ali) Best Direction In A Musical (Michael Greif - Hell’s Kitchen) and for Best Book of a Musical (Kristoffer Diaz - Hell’ Kitchen)
I really want Hell’s Kitchen to win for Best Musical, please. I’m a huge fan of Alicia Keys. Hard to believe that she grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in NYC.
Hope we get a film adaptation of the musical broadway soon with either Sony Pictures/ Columbia Pictures or Tristar Pictures, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Focus Features, Universal Pictures, 20th Century Fox (which now goes by 20th Century Studios), Fox Searchlight Pictures, or Warner Bros Pictures or Warner Bros Pictures/ New Line Cinema distributing the film (As long as it’s not on streaming like Netflix and Amazon Prime/Amazon MGM Studios)
Who should direct the film adaptation?
I think it should be the one and only Queen of R&B Alicia Keys!
I think heart of rock and roll is done now
I'm sure the national tour is already being booked.
I agree with those who think that Illinoise is not a musical. Yes the band sings the music and there is a "story" but if that is the criteria for a musical then I think Cirque du Soleil should be able to be considered (which is exponentially more theatrical). I also worry that more dance shows will try to move onto Broadway and take over that category. It is just a weird classification, in my opinion.
i saw alegria in london and absolutely hated it. shouldn't even be called a circus show if lame clowns take up 70% of the run time. and NO AERIAL SILKS WHATSOEVER! Scandalous
Ft. Lauderdale fl
I thought Gutenberg was a new musical, why is it a revival? 😅
It had an Off-Broadway run 20ish years ago, and by Tony rules any musical/play with an Off-Broadway run with a mainly different cast and creative team is considered a revival
@@JerryFinkleberry oh...thanks!
I'm sad about How to Dance in Ohio as it is the first autistic cast! It was good, but not great either
Has anyone mentioned the lack of nominations for the new Sondheim musical?
The new Sondheim musical was off-Broadway, therefore not eligible.
Why not Elle Fanning in Appropriate? I thought she was delightful.
I thought Stereophonic was just meh and too long. Very surprised it got so many nominations.Points for originality though
Agree, could have been 45 minutes shorter!
Do you find in general the NY has better shows? I can't imagine crossing an ocean to see shows when london is a 40 min train ride. I have only seen a handful of shows in NY and none of them blew me away except NYCB's swan lake, which reduced literally everyone in the audience to tears
Gatsby was robbed
Agreed, I’m so disappointed that Gatsby barely received any nominations
I agree with most of choices. However, I thought Merrily We Roll Along was just OK. it was a good interpretation of a bad musical. I really, really, really want Tommy to win for best Revival. I saw Cabaret twice (first and last previews), but Tommy was better. Also disappointed Tommy didn't get nominated for choreography or best actor.
Here Lies Love was my favorite show of the year, but I understand it is hard for a show that closed early in the season to get nominated for Best Musical. Also Conrad should have been nominated for best supporting actor.
Stereophonic deserves ALL the love it is getting.
I hope Hell's Kitchen or Outsiders wins for best musical. Outsiders for choreography. All the actors for Hell's Kitchen. They were amazing.
Sarah Paulson for Appropriate for sure!
The "s" in Illinois is silent.
Nope
The shows title is illinoise, its a play on actual illinois
It’s from the Sufjan Stevens album called Come on Feel the Illinoise. It’s not silent here.
Yes when saying the state haha! The show though is actually called "Illinoise"
The show is called illinoise
It’s so sad that ALW is such a dreadful composer
Not that sad, he's a gargantuan egotist, thinks he's more talented than he actually is, plus he's not a particularly pleasant person.
Pls don’t eat while streaming. Can’t hear what you’re saying over a mouthful of food. Think of it this way, would you be happy if actors were mumbling like that.
