    OHMYGOD HEY!
    This weekend, even though we live in the UK, we stayed up until the middle of the night to watch the 2023 TONY Awards, celebrating the last Broadway season.
    This year's ceremony was unscripted due to the WGA strike, and was hosted by Ariana Debose.
    Nominated shows included Sweeney Todd, Parade, Shucked, Some Like it Hot, Kimberly Akimbo, Life of Pi, Leopoldatadt, Fat Ham, Prima Facie and more!
    Check out this recap video to find out what happened and see our reaction to the winners...

    Agree on a less scripted show next year. I didn’t miss the inane ditties between things. Very unhappy that the full part of Joel Gray and John Kander’s Lifetime Achievement Awards were not shown on the main broadcast. They both deserved that.
    Ariana DeBose was excellent. The United Palace Theater is stunning.

      @yf2734 I really enjoyed the non -scripted Tonys because of the shown snippets of the nominated plays and musicals - fingers crossed that continues!
      Agree with you that Joel Grey And John Kander deserved a better moment on the main broadcast.
      Does anybody know where to find David Lindsay-Abaire and Jeanine Tesori’s speech? Really happy for their win, as well as for Kimberly Akimko’s triumphant and joyful night. Thrilled for Victoria Clark and what a classy speech.
      The opening number was a pleasant and fantastic surprise! It was neat to see the show in a different venue - beautiful theater indeed.

    Yes, Sweet Caroline is HUGELY popular in America. My dad is ALWAYS singing the first part of the song. We all love it.
    Also, the fact that Alex Newell and J Harrison Ghee both won their respective Tonys means so much to me as a non-binary theatre person in middle America. I cried during both of their speeches. I can’t even express how much it means to me, and I’m sure every trans/non-binary person feels similar. Especially right now, with everything happening in America right now.

      I wonder if it's big in the UK bc there's an excellent BBC special with Neil in his prime. The Sweet Caroline clip is usually floating around UA-cam but it gets copy-claimed a lot then reposted. He's performing & you can only see him & his guitar but the BBC had an orchestra backing him. You know it's the right clip bc a little bit into the song, the music fills out & Neil says something like "oh those strings!" & blisses out. It's adorable & a great version of the song so I hope you can find it & enjoy & share with your Dad!

    While a couple of the musicals’ performance choices might seem odd, i’d say the smartest odd choice was actually for Sweeney Todd. As one of the few shows to do their opening number, at first it seems like a weird song choice because it’s not a stand-out for any main characters.
    And yet, that was the point. Sweeney knows that everyone’s going to see the show with Josh Groban in it, but they also know that if the production is to survive after whenever he leaves the show, they need to make audiences interested the talented cast, make-up/costumes and intriguing staging.

    I vote we keep less of the pointless chat and incorporate the technical categories back in. Usually when it's scripted, we at least get a "earlier in the night, so and so won this design category for this show." This year, you had to look up what won, which is a shame, cuz Life of Pi really shone in the technical categories. Also, who thought the best way to introduce Funny Girl was to focus on Lea Michelle's reviews after everything that went down with Beanie?? So distasteful.

    • @picahudsoniaunflocked5426
      @picahudsoniaunflocked5426 Рік тому

      I love that you have a wave pun in your name.
      Also agree about technical. I don't know why all these award shows aren't more into highlighting craft & they relegate them to a B-event. When I was a kid we wanted to see how the makeup was done, the pyro, the sound, the effects, etc. The "making of" anything is extremely popular & the stage + screen industries are always talking about how under-appreciated their crafts are. Well...let us appreciate them then! Show their categories, make something interesting to incorporate them!
      On a related note, there should be more categories for awards in general as stage + screen are evolving. Culture keeps getting broader, more nuanced, more sophisticated & the awards shows all feel so narrow + constrained, & the constant centering of performers + other playbill-bio-worthy names while tech + craft get shunted aside contribute to that narrowing.

    I was surprised that & Juliet performed Roar. It does a good job showcasing Lorna and the ensemble and it I guess expresses the theme of the show, but I would have liked to see something that included more of the main cast, especially Betsy Wolfe. It’s also one of the most straightforward interpretations of the original song in the whole musical. If I didn’t already love & Juliet so much (saw it Saturday!) I’m not sure it would have sold me on seeing the show. That being said, I don’t really know what I’d offer in its place. & Juliet doesn’t seem to have a go-to special performance song on Broadway, and I don’t think it had one in the West End either.

I watched because of Ramin. Period. Had I known FG was at the end I would have waited to turn it on. As for Lea, I think this is the way the Tony folks felt they could reward her for what might have likely been a win for her last year had she opened instead of Beanie. (Judging from the performance of the woman who sang Wishing and won Best Actress last year, I think I'm correct.) From what she's said, singing as Fanny at the Tony's was her dream, so good for her. As for being a good person. I believe people can grow and change, otherwise why are we here? I doubt she's the same woman at 36 that she was during Glee. A lot of life has happened to her. Beanie should never have been cast. She is a good comedic actress, but she is not a great singer. I think the producers did a real disservice to the production and to Beanie by casting her. The role was originally written for Barbra Streisand to feature her vocal ability, therefore to not have chosen someone who could at least come close to her singing ability is an affront to the show and to Barbra's legacy. Also I went to theatre camp with Lea and she was only ever lovely. I can't speak to her after that, but my hope is that she has learned from whatever pain she caused others. Everyone deserves a redemption, and talent is talent.

    A friend of mine in college did a similar spread for his annual Oscar’s party. He also would create this elaborate trivia game where you could win fun things and everyone got a door prize when you walked in that was a riddle for one of the night’s nominees, and you had to figure it out before final curtain or you forfeited out.
    He did one party a year, and man. He *committed*.

    Curious what you think of the choice of using the Opening Title for ST instead of something else? I personally was disappointed that that was the number selected, though I thought they did a good job with it. I personally was really hoping to get something with both JG and ALA together. Probably the other pieces are just too taxing for Tonys. Also, it's hard to tell about JG's performance from this song alone, imo, but maybe that's just me. I'm certainly curious to see it, though.

    I thought that "Anagram" was a weird choice for Kimberly Akimbo, but I'm not sure which song would have been a better choice -- everything I can think of has some reason why it wouldn't really work.

      @@MickeyJoTheatre Exactly -- "This Time" would be great, but the logistics of the skating probably wouldn't work. "Father Time" is by far my favorite song of the show, but it would make no sense to do a song that doesn't include Kimberly at all. "Make a Wish" is the only other one that I could see working, sort of.

      I was thinking “This Time” as well. Kimberly Akimbo producers wanted to do ice skating but it was too costly. Glad they ended up doing Anagram (although that wasn’t my first choice either).

    • @aptadpamu
      @aptadpamu Рік тому +2

      Given the restrictions/difficulties of staging the other songs for TV, I thought Anagram made the best sense for the Tony Award. Plus, it gave exposure for Justin as well as Nina, Olivia, and Michael...all making their Broadway debut with this show.
      BTW, after last night's show, the cast members (plus Jeanine Tesori & David Lindsay-Abaire) came on stage with letter placards to spell out "SUBLIME CAST". They moved around to rearrange their letters to say, "BEST MUSICAL". Followed by a speech by Victoria Clark acknowledging the understudies, support staff, back of house, the band, and the audiences for all their support. Such a class act!

    Two good trivia questions. I know the answer to the second.
    1. What revival won best revival, while the original production did not win a Tony? Some productions are considered revivals, while the original never was on Broadway. The concept was too established and premiered on some other media.
    2. What play or musical, the original won the Tony and its two or more revivals all won the Tony?

    I feel like awards added a bunch of spectacle in a desperate bid to get people to tune in, or to have clippable moments for UA-cam and such. But they don’t realize people aren’t watching because it’s either too cheesy, too long, or in the case of the Academy Awards too pretentious until someone/thing people are actually invested in (like all the EEAAO awards) wins and gets to speak.
    This seems like the right move, and it would be cool to see them take the spare time and put all awards on-air.
