It's ironic to me that lately this is something that's crossed my mind often. I recently had an accident that sent a 3 inch blade through my wrist. It cut to the bone, severing my radial artery, muscle tissue and a major tendon. I've been hurt before but this time it required 4 hours of surgery. My recovery has been great. However it has made me ponder the gruesome levels of injury and handicaps that would result from such injuries considering the lack of medical advancement in the medieval era.

Chances are the wounded winners died of infection or bloodloss. Get well soon
There are some instances of first rate medical attention in the middle ages. But loads of wounded must have died from infection. One outstanding case of success was when Henry the future King Henry the v was fighting in Wales he was shot in the face with an arrow his surgeon made a device to extract the arrow head out of metal. And close the wound without any infection. A truly remarkable story I recommend looking it up on UA-cam. I think there is a video about it.

In high school I got really into longsword dueling (blunt polymer training swords of course) with a couple friends based on medieval texts by Fiore dei Liberi. It was pretty eye opening to see that no matter how much we studied and trained, every match was still over in less than a minute, usually less than 30 seconds. You get a tiny fraction of a second to decide whether to block, parry, or dodge an attack and immediately have to execute your plan or get whacked. It's really no wonder those people were trained from early childhood because a 4 foot long sword is an exceptionally effective weapon with a steep learning curve.
If you spar with others on the same level you won't develope.
It only lasted 30 seconds because you yielded. If you had actually tried to murder each other you'd have found, to your horror, that human beings are extremely hard to incapacitate or kill. I have seen people trying to kill each other with fists and the resulting show is shocking. The most disconcerting part is that you can see someone covered in blood and bruises make a full recovery after a month. We are the sons and daughters of men who fought for survival for millenia. We are all much, much stronger than what you imagine.

As a high school student, I’m usually sitting through another mundane history class staring at the clock waiting for it to be over. I never though I’d be voluntarily learning about “history” and especially not enjoying doing it. Thank you for making such entertaining and rich videos, this is the kind of channel that UA-cam needs.

History can be awe-inspiring, if you know when to look. I've recently started listening to a metal band called Sabaton, who write pretty much all their songs about compelling events and people from history, and found myself reading about all kinds of things that I never would have known about otherwise.

At the start of the duel I really wasn’t too shocked. But then when Herman summoned that last bit of strength to RIP GUY’S BALLS OFF, I was shocked. The fact that everyone thought Guy had won just for him to be defeated by a guy who was thought to be dead is amazing. It gives me such Game of Thrones vibes, especially the Mountain vs the Red Viper. Wish there was a movie based on this, not just the duel but also the murder of Charles. All around outstanding video
Thats what came to mind for me even though its a work of fiction/fantasy... viper should have let his spear do the talking and kept his distance. We all know what happened from taunting and looking for a confession 💪🦵👐 🤯
Dang that's what I was thinking too. Having your skull shattered with the use of hands is the only thing that can be compared to the duel that was talked about in this video. George Martin himself alledgedly said that "No matter what I write, history is always worse."
You can go from winning a fight to losing very quick I'm sure its happened in boxing many times where one guy is beating the hell out of the other only to have the one getting beat get lucky enough to land a solid punch and KOing the guy who was winning.

At a glance I've seen foreground effects (like snow falling, glass, etc.; some images also have background fully replaced); most images being cut, layered separately and moved at a different pace to give that depth feeling; shots from different angles.
Not that intense or immersive if you have aphantasia
The King, with Timothée Chalamet, really made me think of the brutality of medieval combat. They exhausted themselves early and then the fight ended with both armoured figures going to ground, writhing in the mud and trying to choke the life out of the other.
One thing where the film diverged from reality (understandably so) is that they chose slender Timothy Chalamet for Henry V. He was big.
In a duel, you'd be seeing two ironclad giants clash upon each other. Medieval knights were like thoroughbread horses. They were raised to be killing machines on the battlefield. It must've been quite a sight back in the day.

"The Last Duel" was an awesome movie that I think portrayed the brutality of a medieval duel rather well
Interesting that they reference the same winning attack in that movie. A weird coincidence or they added that in as they felt it captured the banal violence to what was being played up as a righteous duel.
@@partydean17 This probably wasn't the only time a knight was downed in that way. Their armor had very few weaknesses, and that was one of 'em.
My gripe with The Last duel is that once again, medieval europe is depicted as drab, colorless and dirty when the complete opposite was the fact.
@@David_Fellner is it for horse riding purposes that a codpiece or what we consider a cup would not be viable. Boxers don't wear any armour but this is one thing you for sure protect

I'm no expert on the subject, but my guess would be that any kind of solid protection down there would hamper movement to the point where you were safer without any. I hadn't even considered their effects on riding horses, but now that your mention it it would make sense if armored codpieces were less common among mounted soldiers.
I am subscribed to a bunch of history channels, I love me some Kings and Generals, but History Dose blows me away every single time. The art is amazing and the narration is nothing short of superlative.

I felt the duel in The King was very realistic. There wasn't any spectacle or amazing stunts pulled, it was just an awkward fight. A fight between two young men, struggling and slow. It was dull and tense at the same time. I love that scene
Getting your testicles crushed doesn't make it "dull". I would say it was an incredible come back and probably one of the most exciting battles that many of the knights who attended had ever seen. The fight was pretty much one sided until Guy started taunting instead of finishing off Herman. Any other warrior would have skewered Herman with the lance and gotten it over with. There was no way that Herman would have evaded a lance thrust to the body were Guy more serious.

Dude, I literally saw that movie and for some reason the fight scenes just captived my mind. It really has made curious on how fights were like back then. The fights scenes seemed so realistic. It is one of my dreams to see someone make The story of King David, but with that level of detail in the battles that he took place in.

I studied medieval law in Belgium and I am glad to see the trials by ordeal and a small yet very interesting part of Belgian history being depicted in a concise and truthful manner. Great video!

The early modern period (16th-17th centuries) was not much better. In fact it got generally worse in many of the issues we associate with the 'darkness' of the middle ages, like the poor hygiene, believe in magic and especially the witch hunts. Paradoxically one of the main signs of progress - printing and increased literacy contributed to it. Kinda like today, when the internet does wonders for the spread of information and ideas but it also includes misinformation and misguided ideas.
This was after the dark ages (410-1091). Also ancient times were no less brutal lol
Actually only the early middle ages are refered to as the dark ages 500-900 the rest of medieval was not a dark age 900-1400

As a PhD in medieval literature, I'd recommend reading some of the romance material that contain duels. Sir Gareth of Orkney in Le Morte Darthur is especially interesting in this regard, as is the tale of Sir Balin and SIr Balan. They are equal parts brutal as poetically beautiful, and steeped in the traditions and beliefs that underpin the motivations of those whom engage in duels.
Read Hans Talhoffer's "Medieval Combat" a treatise on dueling. It can be found online. What makes this 15th Century book amazing are the pictures which show duels between armored/unarmored using weapons, clubs, and shield. It also includes combat between men and women. Men were handicapped by being placed in a pit as the video stated. Talhoffer could be hired to train for duels. Evidently he had a great track record and was highly sought after. Talhoffer was even a judge at one point. The Germanic tradition of dueling did not end with the Middle Ages, as it continued into the 19th Century, using foils/epees and flintlock pistols.

@@anderrall1925 Kind of an empty statement, i'm afraid. The Middle East is a vast area of many cultures that has seen repeated rapid shifts in cultural practices and traditions, especially during the era in question; Europe too is subject to this. In fact, this statement seems strongly reminiscent of notions born of the occidental fascination with the orient that Edward Said broke down in his excellent book 'Orientalism', which I recommend.
So firstly, laying down any kind of a statement of fact as 'generally' true, doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You will see very little of this in academic writing, and only then in very specific circumstances with parameters under much greater control.
Secondly, direct comparisons are pretty useless, especially for the establishment of statements of general rule. This is exacerbated further by the fact that both the Middle East and Europe are made up of scores of cultural communities, that rapidly transform, and not necessarily in tandem. Whose combat traditions should we take as representative of their entire geopolitical local? Which dualists should we accept as representative as an average for their group against which the standard should be measured? Making comparisons between the two in generalities such as this is pretty much nonsense.
There's also the individualist aspect of this afare to consider. one dualist may be better than another, but their homeland only has so much of a say in that; in that one culture may prioritize ritualistic combat ability higher than another. Much of it would come down to their familiarity with both their own styles and equipment and each others, individual experience, location, weather, diet, rest, etc.
This is just some of the issues with this statement. That being said, don't take this as a rebuke, but rather as constructive criticism. I'm sure there's plenty of vivid accounts of duels between Europeans and Middle Easterners and such that will liven your research.
@@bradstev14 if that is not the truth regardless of what, them why did turks and arabs wearing smaller Shields and light armor such as leather or a thin mail and many withouth armor as seen in some egyptian fatimid troops and such and be and won astounding victories mora often than not against knights clad in mail, plate pieces in some areas and padding underneath which confers massive advanatage in combat?? Id call a fairly big difference in swordfighting skill counting for those wins

I just watched the last duel and I believe that they went with the wrong interpretation based on american source material .
So I spent some time reading some primary and secondary sources in French (all from before the 20th century to avoid biased bullcrap like Jager) and came to the conclusion he didn't do it, which seems to be the consensus among sources that talk about the case.
Basically, the most likely scenario is that the woman was indeed raped, but not by Le Gris.
She told her husband when he came back home from Scotland and he used that to shit on Le Gris that he had been hating for a few years due to envying him for various political reasons.
It must be noted that Carrouges was an extremely violent man who had apparently beaten his first wife to death. And his second wife, Marguerite, wasn't an old stronk woman like in the movie but actually a meek and very young woman.
So basically Carrouges forced her to frame Le Gris and despite Le Gris being found innocent in several trials, he managed to obtain a duel by whining directly to the King's parliament.
While on the ground and about to be finished by Carrouges, Le Gris swore his innocence (instead of confessing like people usually did before execution) with God as his witness.
Several sources mention that some years later, a man sentenced to death for another crime confessed before his execution to be the one who had actually raped Marguerite de Carrouges.
It's also mentioned that after her husband's death, she spent the rest of her life in a convent instead of remarrying (despite being still young) to attone for the fact she had framed an innocent.

@@mattilatvala4164 no they started jousting. One guy got the other off his horse and then taunted him. The guy that fell was able to stab the horse and got the upper hand. He pounded him into the ground and tried to get the guy to confess but he never did.

Narration and imagery was so immersing, this is really impressive
The term "Dark Ages" was first used by Francesco Petrarch, a 14th century Italian humanist. Then, the term was inflated during the 18th to 19th century Europe. But modern historians rejected that the 5th to 15th was "Dark." Only the Fall of Rome is referred as the Dark Ages and not the following centuries.
Here some books about the "Medieval Ages" that were written by professional historians: How the West Won, Medieval Machine, Medieval Technology and Social Change, Medieval Religion and Technology, Feudal Society volume 1and 2, Life in a Medieval Village, Life in a Medieval City, Life in a Medieval Castle, Women in The Medieval Ages, God and Reason in the Medieval Ages, God's Philosophers; and Cathedral, Forge, and Waterwheel.
Ive never heard anyone say the middle ages/medieval period was 'dark'.
The European Dark Age has always been the period between the end of the Western Roman empire and the start of the medieval period - normally defined by the (re) introduction of central government, mostly in the form of monarchies, throughout the continent.

Its always been considered from the fall of the WRE until the establishment of the monarchy in most of Western Europe... which was the mid 800s in both England and France.

@Sunbro Ahh makes sense then... the monarchistic ages of both our countries started around the same time (mid 850s), but here apart from the Civil War era, the monarchy was generally held in high esteem.
The term 'dark ages' however is generally used to highlight an era when there was NO central government, while most Western European countries had established governments in the medieval period (however much they were liked or not).

there's a movie called "The last duel" by Ridley Scott based on a true story. The duel itself is the most realistic I've seen in a movie.

Interesting. Ridley Scott's directorial debut was a movie called 'The Duellists', which was based on a true story in which two men dueled each other to a draw 17 times over the course of two decades.
That movie and "The Deluge" have the most realistic swordplay I've seen in film. Both are quite good movies too. I had no idea Scott had directed another film about duels though, so ill have to give 'The Last Duel' a watch.

And people who interested in medieval combat could learn absolutely zero from smallsword duels because They're completely different combat systems with no inheritance.

I love movie sword fights. All these graceful parries and blocks until one person lands a clean thrust and the loser dies instantly when the reality wasn't much different from a random street fight today. How we have managed to romanticize the brutality of it is pretty gross actually.
An armed street fight with 0 rules or limitations that nobody is allowed to stop under any circumstances is a horrifying idea, dude got his balls ripped off, that's some Live leak shit

yes absolutely brilliant film, the duel between Henry and Percy was almost claustrophobic.
just two dudes, exhaustedly panting while they overheat in their plate armour as they desperately fumble over each other struggling to get a foothold and do any from of damage, even resorting to simply getting on top of the other and beating them into submission while crushing them with their weight.
and the kill itself was so....unceremonial, no last words, no declaration from the victor, no cheers from the spectating armies, just a knife sliding under chainmail followed by a pained grunt and the sound of a person choking on their own blood.
and no celebration after, just Henry catching his breath as he stumbles onto his feet clutching a blood stained dagger in front of a sombre audience.

At The age of 40 I would know longer consider myself an athlete. When I was younger and throughout my college years I practice a lot a full contact martial arts. Western boxing, kickboxing, Grappling, Judo etc…. The coffee shop I worked out during my college years was owned by a gentleman who was very large practitioner of H.E.M.A. ( Historical European Martial Arts). My friend, later became a full-fledged MMA fighter and owns a gym teaching people fitness and different forms, it myself agreed to try it out. We put on leather armor and metal helmets, and proceeded to have the worst beatings I have EVER RECEIVED. I was left so black and blue all over that I could not even take a shower or a bath because the water hitting my skin was excruciating. My friend who owns the gym also agrees that out of all the forms he’s ever tried and perfected, that was the most brutal. No words can describe what it feels like to have your “Bell Rung” by a “rap shot “. Pretty much get hit in the head with a wooden dowel while wearing a metal helmet. It knocks you senseless in a way that you were unable to think or react for at least 30 seconds to a minute. I only did it three times but it was the most BRUTAL training I have ever experienced.
I really want to try my luck at that medieval mma festival, it looks exhilarating!
The duel scene in The King did a great job at portraying how gruesome and tiring it would be to fight in armor

Plate armor wasn't tiring to the users, who would train since the age of 7 to properly use it. Didn't restrict mobility at all, either.
@@tridonstrident6785 it did and it does, I've worn plenty of plate armor and sparred in it. While it's nowhere near as restrictive as most people think, it's not without it's limitations. Anyone is going to tire faster with 80 LBS of metal attached to them, especially while you're getting bashed left and right.
@@GiskardRevenlov I did exaggerate a bit - I mostly just meant that plate armor isn't nearly as tiring as people make it out to be (people can do cartwheels in it, after all). Also, I thought plate armor only weighed 30-60 pounds on average?

I remember being on a tour of York recently and we passed a large stone monument where the tour guide casually said “this is where the public disemboweling punishments took place before the criminals were hanged and quartered and their heads placed on spikes over the city gate.” Was almost impossible to grasp that this literally took place in such a quaint and pleasant English city and all sanctioned by the government. Crazy.

Woah, what a coincidence that I'm going through all your vids in order, and the Medieval duel episode happens to come up on the day I started playing Dark Souls 3 again for the first time in forever. It makes total sense that fights would come down to punching matches, with both sides so heavily armored. Very very brutal.

@@Ucho469 bro 30lbs long swords were usually around 1.5kg about 3.5lbs arming swords about 1kg or 2.2lbs 30lbs like man full plate was like 40-60lbs

They were armored which is why it got to grappling, if they had not been armored it would be most likely someone would have suffered a decisive sword wound rather quick.

This sounds a lot like my high school cross country running team once our team and the other school's teams moved into the woods along the trail of the race... blood, pain and true carnage beyond the eyes of the coaches and judges... good times.

Very good video! An item to note is that not all duels would have been quite so brutal (or final), depending on the situation and circumstances, as sometimes victorious knights would sell the opponent's armor back to them, (or even ransom the knight) hence the term "blackmail."

It is true that defeated knights were obliged to pay ransom under some circumstances and that sometimes meant loss of valuable possessions, such as armour. Just not as described.
