This is exactly why I respect and admire Bob. I've have been asking for this thin stainless steel pipe tutorial and he delivers 💯. Little ironic tho because im in Baytown TX testing for a company and I had got a 6inch sch 10 stainless that I busted out on the root smdh.
...Bad Root..Ouch!........I've welded quite a bit of Sch. 10 stainless....always run plenty of purge...and even tape off the root except a couple inches where you're welding, I usually used a good bevel, and 1/16 to 3/32" root opening....1/16" filler....and all done with antique Airgas or Linde Transformer TIG machines....on these old machines....you get 1 dial...'current'.....and 1 switch...AC/DC-/DC+........
OK....the root....always a sore spot, and even if it's good, and inside is OK.....some inspectors are really hung up on the appearance of the bead/s..... Sugar.....that is something that I only had couple times.....trying to make 2nd or 3rd pass without the purge still connected..
Hey Bob. Can you do a video on suck back. I tig weld stainless and carbon pipe and sometimes i get suck back if i run my hotpass to hot or don't give my root tine to cool. I would really appreciate it! Your videos are awesome
Hi Bob, great video as usual. Going up the sides are the easy part. How do you contort coming off the bottom? Arc shots or not I'd love to see how you get comfortable, hold yourself steady, see the puddle with the wire in front of it. What's the best way to hold the torch while progressing up and around. It's not as easy as it sounds. Thanks, Tim
Tim, we have lots of videos doing 5G and 6G pipe that shows bottom to top. If you go to our channel page and do a quick search for either you will find some.
Years ago a contractor in Prudhoe Bay purged a large pipeline to weld on it. Unfortunately a laborer decide to take a nap up in the pipe earlier and he died.
I have never seen purge done before, except when welding fuel tank with file still in it. When welding high carbon steel I have seen it when there is an issue when TIG welding one may encounter impurity, the use of a Stainless filler wire works well. What is the theory behind this?
purge is 100% necessary on any stainless welding, including carbon when using stainless filler since stainless is so sensitive to atmospheric gasses.. some people just purge the root.. i purge for the whole process
Yes...I purge anything thinner than about 1/4"....a few extra CFH of Argon is waaay less $$$ than a weld that fails a qualification for a job interview........or for any weld ....
kevin annand I found that out the hard way, some how a 70s6 filler got put in my SS filler container.. I just blindly grabbed doing some 2in sch 40 pipe and it was almost immediate dog shit soon as filler was added all due to lack of shielding gas
Very good. Imagine this I worked in food plant we had 1 inch 316 SS thin wall chemical fill lines, acids, caustics etc. These were often 100 plus feet long all welded in place no ferrules or clamps to get inside and purge. They would get pinhole leaks and we had to climb up into the rafters and try and repair these with TIG, porous, couple year old SS, with chemical residue inside, talk about a challenge.
It would help, as thin as sch.10 is....running a cap bead can still get the inside of the pipe very hot..... I've welded a LOT of 6, 8,10, and 12" sch. 10....most all was less than 3/16" thick....I tried running a TIG cap without purge....the inside was badly oxidized (sugared)....
I've found with stainless 316L, a long stick out, say 13mm, on a vertical has always given me a good corn color. Any thoughts on stainless tubing otherwise?
Weld.com You got it! Thats what im going to do. Im going to practice, practice, and more practice. Do you recommend they we do the schooling, or learn on the job?
First off Bob I love you videos they are informal and very educational in lue of that I want to know can you do a schedule 80 2in on a 6g iam have trouble
Im totally new to this, but just started sch 10 ss pipe in our class, how long do you purge for? I have just put the tape on, and let it sit there for around 3 mins, any advise I appreciate.
Clive. It depends on the diameter/size of the pipe and the length of the pipe. The more volume, the longer you will need to purge it. The purpose of a purge is to expel the oxygen out with an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen. Argon is heavier than air so if you are rolling one out horizontal like in the video, just imagine the argon settling at the bottom and pushing out the oxygen out the top. If you are using masking tape, for the side you want your purge to vent I'd put a few vent holes towards the top of the pipe and then when I feel it's good and purged I will put more vent holes top, sides and bottom. And if you don't poke enough holes or large enough holes in your tape and your argon purge flow rate is too high, when you go to finish your root pass it could blow out on you because the argon has to escape somewhere and it will push through the molten metal and you will fight it trying to tie it in.
It's's ok to remove filler wire but you have to flip it around to other side that is clean, this weld is contaminated. Also, hand feeding rod should be done through the fingers, not with your entire arm. Try to choose the correct rod to lay wire the cap and avoid feeding wire on the cap.
most likely not enough heat and going too fast. need to let the walls break down meaning you should be key holing and/or have the filler wire fed from the back. im guessing you are doing the lay wire technique? that can lead to lack of fusion and suck back when you're welding from the 6 oclock to 9 oclock
Feed the rod straight down from the top tack onto the bottom. The rod will look like a straight line going down the middle of the pipe. I do that up until I'm about up the middle of the pipe and then I just dip the root.
Most anything except maybe carbon steel piping, if you want nice root back face......I've even purged that carbon steel to get nice bead inside the pipe..... Some years ago, I was working at a bio-mass generating plant...33 mega-watts ...but steam temp/pressure the same realm as Nukes.....1050 degrees F'... and 1,100 PSI.....from steam generator to turbine was 12" stainless pipe...about 2" wall..... During a routine, scheduled shutdown, contractors replaced all the superheat boiler tubes....2" heavy wall ( about 3/8") chromoly, 180 degree bends, maybe 250 of them......welders didn't purge....inspector 'failed' most (using a lighted bore-scope)...arguments started...so.....all had to be cut out and done over......30-35 welders sent home for a week, lots of crane work...access only from top of 130 foot high water-wall boiler....tubes all had to have ends re-sawed and beveled.....all done inside the firebox.... working on scaffolds....80-100 feet up there.... so...I'm sure all the re-work cost a lot more than a few cylinders of argon.....you can get paper water soluble purge dams for this exact situation, when you wash out the steam system later...the purge dams just dissolve and go out with waste water.....
Purge all metals or have backing gas mate if you are penetrating thru the metal, other wise you will get a sugaring effect on the other side of the weld. (not structurally sound ) Except aluminium.
I have been welding some schedule ten stainless at work. some guys have been telling me to slam it together no gap, just keep wire in case it opens up. in the puddle just wait for the little balls to dance inside the puddle and take off and it leaves a perfect colorful pass inside the pipe on root. I have done it on small stuff just afraid to try on 10 inch. what do you think?
My buddy worked at a place for some years that didn't do drug tests either until someone found some white powdery stuff. They tested it and it came back positive as cocaine so they tested everybody. A bunch of guys got fired including the supervisor in charge of the night shift who had worked there for 20+ years.
KRS 1 Unfortunately my company doesn't pay enough to afford cocaine 😀. The boss just says "I don't care what you do on your time just don't do it on mine.".
Why only argon purge ? Its not dispersing the air as good as a gas made for it... backside color is not approved. 😕 and a hint, protect your welding wire form Oxydation using shieldgas
This is exactly why I respect and admire Bob. I've have been asking for this thin stainless steel pipe tutorial and he delivers 💯. Little ironic tho because im in Baytown TX testing for a company and I had got a 6inch sch 10 stainless that I busted out on the root smdh.

Ric Dweld for the hackberry job?
Doug Ankrum my purge was good I didn't bust because of suger it was that the root wasn't uniform enough
Ant Solis yes sirrr they hiring big time too they need almost 200 combo pipe welders
OK....the root....always a sore spot, and even if it's good, and inside is OK.....some inspectors are really hung up on the appearance of the bead/s..... Sugar.....that is something that I only had couple times.....trying to make 2nd or 3rd pass without the purge still connected..
Man you are good. I use all your videos for my schooling. I had a lot of problems with stainless. Your videos really help me. Keep it up! Thanks
Excellent video shots, nice welding big fella.
Great video. Thanks for the shout out Guys.
HuntingdonFusion Our pleasure. We're loving the new purging equipment.
Hey Bob. Can you do a video on suck back. I tig weld stainless and carbon pipe and sometimes i get suck back if i run my hotpass to hot or don't give my root tine to cool. I would really appreciate it! Your videos are awesome
David Stevenson you know what you're doing wrong, so just stop doing it.
Hi Bob, great video as usual. Going up the sides are the easy part. How do you contort coming off the bottom? Tim, we have lots of videos doing 5G and 6G pipe that shows bottom to top. If you go to our channel page and do a quick search for either you will find some.
Bigger cup helps move faster and helps shield the weld . I would cap with a size 12 ceramic cup
Ive found an 8 on a gas lense best for me for capping off with if walking, but yeah other than that, a 10 or 12 if freehanding it
Years ago a contractor in Prudhoe Bay purged a large pipeline to weld on it. Unfortunately a laborer decide to take a nap up in the pipe earlier and he died.
What amperage are you running?
Bob,
Thanks for the video. What amperage are you running the root, is it more lay wire to start
or key hole?
Thanks
Tim
Thanks for video.
Would you let us know what amps did you set up for root run and capping?
Thank you
I have never seen purge done before, except when welding fuel tank with file still in it.

Great video, I haven't Purged the cap weld. Does it help?
Charlie Spann yes it helps it from getting too hot, also turn the argon up on your tig rig as high as you possibly can that also helps
U say turn ur torch flow rate up...how high are you talkin, 50cfh?
Bob what was the land of the pipe? Really nicely welded! Always a pleasure watching the channel.
1/32" +/-
Bob how many amps u using for root pass? Once u finish the root pass do you let the pipe cool down before welding the second pass?
porosity FXDB yea he lets pipe cool down for i'd say 10 minutes
i busted on one of these tests about a month ago i busted for inconsistencies. what settings are appropriate for this schedule?
Nice do more stainless pipe videos bob
I've found with stainless 316L, a long stick out, say 13mm, on a vertical has always given me a good corn color. Any thoughts on stainless tubing otherwise?
great video's, what is your opinion on the everlast combo welders? not bad? stay away?
We use them all the time.
Started out being interested in Welding. I want to get started. Have any advice for people starting out in Welding? Any advice helps.
Get as much hood time as you can. Watch as many videos and other welders as you can and soak in their knowledge.
Weld.com You got it! Thats what im going to do. Im going to practice, practice, and more practice. Do you recommend they we do the schooling, or learn on the job?
Whatever is available to you. There are great welders that have gone through traditional education, as well as learning on the job.
Weld.com Great advice. This all starts with getting as much Hood time that i can get. Im getting a job with a Welding Materials company.
Which gas in use sir
Is there some sort of vent built into that purge doohickey?
Ryan Jones Yes
First off Bob I love you videos they are informal and very educational in lue of that I want to know can you do a schedule 80 2in on a 6g iam have trouble

Thank you very much Mauricio, I appreciate you replying to me..
could this be done autogenously with a cap?
What amps are you on running the root?
I've had the had push the root flush, have trouble getting poke through, fine line between to high and to low purge pressure
maybe I missed it.. but what was the amps on the root and on the cap
Did you keyhole at all or did u just laywore the video won’t play for me
You are the best!
is there a chance to see some duplex root pass
We can add it to the list. In the meantime, check out some of the videos done by fieldres. He's got a bunch of stuff on Duplex.
do you ever have trouble with purge pushing root out from inside?
..No...but it's a condition to think about.....lower the purge pressure and give it a way to escape while you finish the root pass....
thanks for video sir.
I am trying to MIG weld 16 gauge stainless sheet metal with .035 wire. I have tri blend gas, but can't get a good looking bead. Please help.
is that an everlasting dv 185?
It's's ok to remove filler wire but you have to flip it around to other side that is clean, this weld is contaminated. Also, hand feeding rod should be done through the fingers, not with your entire arm. Try to choose the correct rod to lay wire the cap and avoid feeding wire on the cap.

Doug Ankrum sounds like they should've fired & rehired the CWI's
I've seen stuff done like that before
how hot do you run the root

I have been capping it at around 90 walking the cup. pipe fitter out of local 83
qual a amperagen que foi usada e quanto foi deixado de abertura
What amp you run the root
Anybody tried to back feed sch 10? Does it work or does it get too hot and burn it?
Thanks Bob
jumbo #10 cup just nice and slow would have been clean walking the cup
U always talk about how u do things wrong... show us how to do it right.. n how u do it right
Sch 10 is most pipe welders worst nightmare... It has cost me my job a couple times.
Nice bead buddy
Pharmaceutical or Food grade requires entire Process sanitary, especially filler rod.
Tank you you good
What's the reason behind taping over the root opening?
We're purging the pipe from the inside. If you don't tape the root opening you are allowing for air to enter the inside of the pipe.
Can you tell how to tie in to tacks on stainless pipe welding? I couldn't see much of it here.
I just crank up the purge and turn it down when I close to finish
If it was thicker I'd just use a stainless electrode.
had it push*
I don't think this guy ever work in the plants. looks like I guy I was with in school type welds
This is a beginner's weld
I saw HFT and thought Harbor Freight Tools. That's how my stoner brain works.
How do you pass piss tests to get jobs?
KRS 1 Same job for 15 years. They don't require drug tests.
My buddy worked at a place for some years that didn't do drug tests either until someone found some white powdery stuff. They tested it and it came back positive as cocaine so they tested everybody. Are you welding pipe in a shop or something else?
Your a teacher and thats your root pass?
That root was bad. Real bad. You'd get looked out quick.
nice weld Bob!! great video and very helpful for us🤓😎appriecate the help Bob and Weld.com
szału niema
Nor mr tig.
I am doing started ss pipe business
Too slow, chromium precipitation...
It's really really hard to get decent color on schedule 10.
eeeeyyyyy soldadura mas fea
Why only argon purge ? Its not dispersing the air as good as a gas made for it... backside color is not approved. 😕 and a hint, protect your welding wire form Oxydation using shieldgas
I hate stainless, and quit it, screw that stainless. The most boring stuff to weld
Omg why you show to people such a bad weld? Root is terrible!
Hack
