My name is Jesse Gomez, a 72 year old golfer from San Antonio Tx. I have improved my playing this sport since I started watching your vertical line swing. Thank You for your expertise and helping golfers of all ages.
Todd Kolb is one of the very few legitimate Golf Pro's on UA-cam. He's the real deal, a proven coach with a passion to teach. Not like most of the useless UA-cam goofballs that aren't interested in improving your game, only their bank accounts. I wish I lived closer to sign up for some REAL lessons from a REAL Coaching Professional. Every major city needs a Todd Kolb. P.s. his book is a terrific resource and a must read
You are too kind....thank you! Let me add that this is a team effort on our side. Nick, Jordy, JT and the team are here to share what we have learned with our fellow golfers. Appreciate you my friend!
His book is a revelation. Makes the swing so simple and reliable.
@@allanpatrick4105 we appreciate the kinds words, thank you. It is a total team effort on our side here. Nothing better than sharing what we have learned with our fellow golfers.
Thanks brother you have truly changed my golf game. I am now breaking 80 every time I step on the course anywhere. I changed my golf take away and it worked. Tim James Macon Ga.
Tim, thank you for sharing your story. This is why we do what we do...more to come. Have you read my book vlsgolf.com/
I had to laugh when your first description of an amateur golfer was "you're 57 years old and just had a knee replacement". Well, I'm 57 years old and just had both my knees replaced! I tend to agree with you on all of this. As much as I want my body to do certain things, I have to be realistic. Your tips are simple and make a bunch of sense. Thanks for thinking of us "regular guys" :)
Rob, great post. We are on the same page. If you would like to learn more about the Vertical Line Swing, see here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I have mostly struck my irons solidly but with too much draw spin so my misses were to the left & into the wind I would overdraw by 30 yds , until after watching & trying vertical line swing realized how shallow my backswing was & after going vertical my iron shots finish much straighter, I start the takeaway keeping the club head facing my target for 6 inches which keeps me on a vertical plane, thanks for all your info videos on this 😀
I’m from the Philippines! Thanks for your simple and relatable tips.
We got you covered! What is the best time of the year to visit your area?
All so true. Aging body losing flexibility, well meant critiques without fixes. You nail it every time Todd. Without your videos and the Bad Lie book, I would have hung it up long ago. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Keep doing what you do, Please.
I appreciate that Ron. It is a total team effort on our side. We have a record year planned for content...more improvement to come my friend.
This is a phenomenal piece of instruction! It connects the dots on getting your whole body working in a sequenced way to SWING the club. The ball will get in the way and know what to do if you trust the SWING. Thanks!
Scott, appreciate those kind words. Nothing better than sharing what we have learned with our fellow golfers...more to come.
The Bad Lie is one of the best golf reads I've ever done. Just for the help in short game is worth the buy. But more importantly the VLS has helped me with a consistent foundation for the full swing. Was struggling mightily before this read. After going through checklist on the range, I had my best golf practice session EVER! thank you for writing this - it will stay in the bag!
Wow, post of the day...thank you! We are grateful for fellow golfers like yourself who bring a real passion to the game. Thank you for sharing...
still with you Todd your tips continue to inspire me. Most of the time my shots are spot on then I have a senior moment. But comming up 82 and on a 16 handicap I cant wait to get to the course. Cheers from the sunny Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
Appreciate you Jerry. This is why we love golf...always a desire to learn and improve.
I use the "footwhip" drill from Gary Occhino channel. I keep my arms and wrist tension free and swing from the ground up.
Will need to check into it. Thanks!
Hi Todd, I am from Prince George BC, Canada. Love your videos and you are my one and only youtube coach. I love your coaching and tips. Thank you, please keep them coming.
Thanks Duncan! Total team effort on our side. Nick, Jordy and JT are a big reason for what we are able to do...more to come!
I’m a new golfer and I agree totally. I have had so many problems implementing what coaches say to do until I saw a video on tempo and I implemented it. I swing slower now and my lag works. I hit it straight and get good contact most of the time now. I think tip #4 should be stay calm and don’t get mad after a slip up or a bad shot. Go back to your Steady swing keep it in tempo and keep your head in the game
Solid post here...thanks for adding to the conversation. Are you a subscriber?
What you say is so true, every coach has their way of explaining the game, not always to suit your game. Love to hear about ball position for each shot. Thanks
Thank you for posting. We cover ball position in our book The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
Allen Homerville, Ga. This is exactly what I've been attempting to work on but it all seems to go out the window when addressing the ball. Thanks for the AWESOME video
Thanks for sharing! We are here to help. Are you a subscriber?
Brilliant Todd,,I can put this into practice,, thanks
My pleasure. I lay out the entire golf swing and short game in my book The Bad Lie. Here is the Amazon link if you are interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
I love the 3 setter continuous swing as a pre shot routine. This may be exactly what I am looking for. I am great at the range and on the simulator, but need to find my rhythm again after all the walking, delays and distractions.
Headed to Florida next week. I will try it.
You got this!
Very very true what you tell us in this video! One of the biggest problems in golf is - at least for my experience - the fact of "what does a word or expression mean". let me explain. The words: turn, pivot, rotate....have (and i'm not a nativ english speaker) so many different meanings, especially when translated in other languages. Even using the correct word doesn't mean you can do the movement meant by this word. Just another example -> "hit down on the ball" - this wording drove me crazy when i started playing golf, cause if i want to hit down, i would do that right in front of my body, like i would do with an axe or hammer. So i think, a lot of us struggle cause we can not translate the spoken words into a correct movement. Just my 2 cents ;)
What words we use are vital to coaching...solid post here.
Start every round with a warm up and small perfect contact swings…guaranteed to play better.
I only get to play one day a week. So I don't expect too much from myself. Nashville Tennessee
Same, I’m from Nashville as well.
You got this.
Nice advice Todd. However I have improved my swing by using a slight restriction to my hip turn by pushing my knees a tad inwards and keeping my weight on the insides of my feet at address…not to be over done…..just gently. I then use my left shoulder as a pivot and swing back. I keep only one swing thought….hit the ball with your back to the target….this allows a smooth weight transfer and slots the club correctly on the down swing. As an 18 handicap I may mis hit a couple of times in a round of 18 holes. It’s only my short game that keeps me from lowering my score. Different strokes for different folks!
Rohit, great post here. You nailed it! Find YOUR swing not THE swing. Far too often golfers try to swing like a "tour pro" instead of finding their best swing. Thanks for adding to the conversation.
All good points here, but I still like to know what I should, in theory, be doing, even if I can’t quite get it perfect. 😅 I should be trying to implement proper fundamentals, I.e, grip, wrist angles and rotation like the pros.
There is truth to what you say. We lay out our principles here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I agree to that the X-factor nearly killed golf for most amateurs. Howdy from SE Florida
You speak the truth IMO...thanks!
Just came across your channel. I have been playing for about 20 years and have struggled with strike. I've taken lessons here and there through the years and have found that coaches want to immediately compare you to a tour player and wants you to do change too much at one time. Resulting in awkward swing feelings and far too many swing thoughts and translates to worse golf. Wish the world of amateur golf lessons would take a simpler approach and build off of what we do well using simple motions that make sense rather than trying to turn us into robots. I like your approach in this vid and will take a look at more of what you have to teach.
Appreciate this post, you are 100% correct. Our goal is to provide good solid information that is easy to understand. If you enjoyed this video, you may also like my book, The Bad Lie where we cover the swing and short game. Here is the Amazon link if interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
Hi from France was late taking up golf two years ago at the age of 75! But I am enjoying scoring mid nineties (good direction but not good distance) Love your "three setters" stops me rushing each shot
Enjoy being in the fairway. I'm in the trees so often, I should take up bird watching.
Good job, mate!
The 3 setters are 💵. Welcome 👍
All good points thanks, additionally I think lot of amateurs have just never been taught how a club head is supposed to actually move down and through a ball.
Lots of truth to what you say. This is one of the reasons we wrote The Bad Lie. To crest clarity for our fellow golfers.
Have you and your team ever considered doing a weekly webinar? Where you comment on our questions? Thanks!
Thanks for reaching out James, we actually do have a monthly Live Clinic we host for members of our VLS Academy, and we just did one last night on Club Face Control! If you'd like more info, be sure to reach out to justinkolb@vlscoaching.com to get more info!
As always great tips to improve my game. (Harrison City PA}
Hey Todd shot a 92 yesterday thanks to you, going to try this on Friday, my rhythm is bad, cant seem to get my finish right.
Forgot to tell you I am 72
Jeff, you got this...keep at it my friend.
Tips are very easy to follow even for an Englishman !!
Those Englishmen are crafty and can golf their ball! LOL
Thanks Todd great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪
Some of the all time greats come from Ireland....welcome!
Thanks Todd. Brilliant lesson as ever. I noticed that your left foot lifts and opens out a little as you are completing your swing. Are you conscious of this and is it a desirable move? Cheers from the U.K.
Great pick up. I started doing this recently to help increase my turn. As a result my tempo and timing has improved drastically. 💪
Great information and tips! (Good Morning from Cooper City, South Florida near Fort Lauderdale)
What is the difference between rhythm and tempo?
Thought todays tips were best yet! A lot of single plane Moe Norman stuff in what you teach for us “Experienced golfers”. (Rangeley, Maine)
Mo Norman was an all time great!
What are your stock yardages with that easy swing?
Hi Todd - I'm Dan, down in Ft Myers FL - almost fully recovered from Ian:) I have your (wonderful) book and watch these videos weekly. One thing I've never heard you speak of is how to start the backswing. I guess it's just all one motion - just curious if you think of the left shoulder or the hands as the 'starter' for that motion? Thanks!!!
Welcome! Good question. To start the swing fee like you are pushing the club away with your lead arm. This tends to help tempo and timing. 👍
Awesome explanation..it should be that simple..little tweaks afterwards...don't start with the tweaks
Yes, you are spot on. Too often the industry makes this game too complicated. Thanks for posting...
I have been watching you for a long time & I have tried the vertical swing but I am still slicing. My set up is good, my 60/40 is good but why am I still slicing. Yorktown Heights NY
Sal, thanks for the question. The key is to complete the turn, let the trail leg release and the hips turn. Have you read the book? See here www.badliegolfbook.com/
Todd, Hi from Spring Lake, MI. I’m 73 and was recently fitted clubs with senior flex shafts because of you swing speed. My question is fitting my swing with the very flexible shaft. Do I experiment with different swing speeds or is there a more scientific approach?
Good question. Tempo is key to good golf. Some people have a slow tempo while others a quicker tempo, both work. Best to think smooth and in balance first IMO. Have you read my book, The Bad Lie? Here is the Amazon link if interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
Hi Chris from Fremont, NE. My problem isn't in the back swing. It's getting my hips cleared in the forward swing.
We have some great videos on that topic.
Thanks so much for this video. I have a question for you and maybe you can do a video on it. Is the golf swing a body first, arms follow swing or an arms first, the body follows swing? There are certainly many examples of pro players on both sides. Jack Nicklaus was an arm swinger. Ben Hogan more of a body swinger. What do yo recommend?
Great question. Here you go, the arms take the back and up and the body turn takes the club around. Long term, I like more arm swing vs. body swing. This is a cornerstone of the Vertical Line Swing www.badliegolfbook.com/
I find to get my knees touching I need to narrow my stance from shoulder width. Also, from a narrow stance I can rotate better to a complete finish. In you book you do not address stance width. Do you have a preference for us senior golfers. Thx. Tom
Great question, we want the knees to touch but with a stand wide enough to provide stability in your swing. 👊
Great video but I come up with own routine when I’m playing but I’ll give yours a try. 3 swing seems much to me as I get older. Thanks for the tips. I do subscribe & thumbs up.
Be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for posting…
Your next video needs to be 'why most amateurs never become a good putter'. I've been playing for over 50 years and I have always been a below average putter. Strike that....a way below average putter. I've tried every method and have a dozen different putters and I still suck. Occasionally I get lucky and have a good day but that happens maybe 5% of the time. I'm almost to the point of giving up the game. Btw tee to green I'm not bad.... particularly for my age.
Sincerely,
Frustrated Putter
Hi Todd
Trevor from Durham UK.
I am one of your experienced golfers who has greatly improved following your swing tuition. However I occasionally end up chicken winging when I try to get extra distance. Any tips?
Trevor, thanks for asking. Here is a great drill to help
ua-cam.com/video/dx-H4ntMcGs/v-deo.html
Hi Todd;
I have a question for you about the pivot, or weight shift as they're called. Have you ever found that people are misunderstanding the concept & swaying rather than only shifting? Would you agree that in the backswing, that the shift is finished by the time your club is parallel to the ground & that it's only a small move & that your weight should never get to the outside of your foot but only directly over your ankles or even only to the inside of your foot where rotation takes over? My playing partner was having this issue, not because he couldn't do it once he knew, but misunderstood it causing him to sway. Thanks for your videos as they've helped me quite a bit.
Mike, you make some great points here. Yes, many golfers unfortunately do not understand the pivot. We will keep sharing what we have learned. Appreciate you posting 👊
Todd, is it ok to lift the lead heel a little in the back swing?
Absolutely!! It is one of the Vertical Line Swing cornerstones. 👊
56 Prosper TX 4.3 index with the worst golf swing ever im a picker with no distance, just imagine you fix my swing and we ride together on the senior tour!!!!! SOS!!!!
Todd, I assume this will work with the lead foot flared out about 45 degrees?
We like some lead foot flare, around 20-30 degrees seems to be a good spot for most golfers.
Thank you so much!
It's one way to swing. It's not the only way to swing. Another way is to realize WHERE the golf ball is...and that is DOWN. Once you understand how the shaft bends, and is supposed to bend, the game gets pretty easy.
Thanks for posting...
I enjoy your videos and the lessons that you share with your viewers. I have tried the VLS, but I find that I am fequently coming over the top and pulling shots. Do you have any advice for eliminating the pulled shot? (St. Augustine, FL)
Good question, make sure you are getting a nice full hip turn on the backswing...the turn is what take the club around....this is key.
Sam Snead had that beautiful leg work..... he also played for very long time.
IMO, Snead had one of the most rhythmic & fluid swings of any in his generation. I never get tired of seeing it.
Snead is an all time great!
Amen!
Tip # 1 to ‘finally’ improve your game:
Spend 80% of your time pitching, chipping and putting.
I know… it’s not glamorous, but your scores will plummet.
Fair points…
People suck because they simply do not understand the physics imparted on the ball, so they cannot move the ball with any intention, and they cannot make consistent contact. They are just a morass of flailing inconsistency.
Golfers still struggle because they are not taught the secret of the right arm. Full stop. All the rest is preferences or fog in the eyes...
so agreed..... 99% of golfers can't do the modern golf swing the pros are using. Every amateur swings the golf club differently. Instead of teaching a method...teachers should be teaching ball contact skills.
You speak the truth...
You very rarely talk about tension ,when gripping the club should they be loose tight medium etc.. for all clubs ...
The key with tension is to be consistent. Some golfers grip the club firm and maintain it firm throughout the motion, some soft...be consistent with the tension and you are good to go.
Love your lessons Todd. Keep ‘‘em coming down here in SC.
Thanks! Will do! 2023 will be a record year for USGolfTV. If you would like other ideas on how to improve, see here vlsgolf.com/
Agree. The old pros swung that way.
You speak the truth. Have you read our book THE BAD LIE where we discuss the Vertical Line Swing system. It is available on Amazon.
Jim Venetos has changed my golf game. None of the traditional coaching methods ever improved my game. Only about a month after finding him, my striking has improved drastically. To each their own.
Like 'Rob' and 'Over 50' said below, I concur that Todd's lessons and simplistic approaches to golf's swing dynamics and fluid motions have greatly impacted my game. I am one of those senior 'experienced' golfers and beyond the driving range or course, I always try to swing fluidly in the backyard with plastic golf balls to simply reinforce muscle memory. I also just bought the new Maxvert driver and was blown away by the ease of contact and feel as the ball is impacted. I had 2 big name drivers in my bag as I always went back and forth depending on which one was 'cooperating' on a given day, but they now reside in my closet of discarded clubs! Trust me on the Maxvert...buy one today...awesome!! The 'Bad Lie' book is also a great read and offered me even more information. Thanks so much Todd for your amazing, common-sense approach to golf. You have made it far more enjoyable and swinging the club now is no longer a mystery. Bob
60 years old. Love your lessons. The athletic move, like hitting a tennis ball, or throwing a ball works. Nice and smooth with a 1, 2 count. Thanks! Ordering your book too. Cheers from Colombia.
Hi Todd, I’m from Canada , Grande Prairie Alberta, I’m 75 and still trying to improve my game, I’m a 11 handicap, but so far this year I’m having trouble breaking 90 😢. I really enjoyed your time. Thanks.
Hang in there. This is a crazy game that can be challenging and fun all at the same time. If you enjoyed this, you would benefit from www.badliegolfbook.com/
Writing from Port Orchard WA. Another great video. This is the second I can remember that gave suggestions on a pre-shot routine. I find if I have a routine down, I tend to think less as I address the golf ball.
Tomorrow heading down to Arizona for 2 1/2 months and taking my signed copy (thank you Todd) of the Bad Lie. I recommend if you follow Todd's videos you get a copy of the book. It is more in depth with check points than there is probably time to cover in a video.
Ken, appreciate those kind words. You are making progress my friend 👊
Hi Todd,
I’m 78 years old and I have watched your videos for the last month and they have changed my game so much that I’m blown away. I used to play off 6 hcp. back in the day but in the last few years I’ve just lost it but now my shots are straighter and longer and my friends can’t believe the change. I played 9 holes today in a 40 mph wind and shot 5 under my hcp , many thanks.
Nick (uk)
Nick, this is the post of the week! Congrats to you. Maybe you want to share my book, The Bad Lie with your friends www.badliegolfbook.com/
Hi Tobb, thanks for the many great tips. Can’t wait to put them into practice in the spring in Montreal…
You got this!
