Crystal clear Todd - thank you! I sometimes get in a pattern of hitting down on the driver - so down that it bounces off the tee box. When that happens, I will try to recall this lesson and work on stance, hands and ball position. Thanks!
This is great. You reminded me of a move I taught myself then forgot. At the top of my backswing I would push my hands up and out. That put me I think in a vertical line position. When I remember that move I get my best shots. Thanks for your videos
I started to preset my back hip last summer and it really made it so easy to keep the ball in the fairway and have lots of birdie chances. Great fun. I used to be a long hitter, but now at age 64 with limited range of motion and less strength, I am shooting the best scores of my life and found real consistency with all clubs. My putting is the only problem keeping me from breaking par routinely.
This video has helped me alot, I'm 58 years old and have shoulder and back issues, the vertical swing make it easier for me to swing the club and without pain and stiffness. Thank you.
I wasted about $ 1,000 in 2020 taking lessons from Golftec. All my young coach ever wanted me to do was get a 'deeper' backswing as you demonstrate in this video is for younger guys. I kept telling him I could not move like that but he never listened. I tried to switch to a different coach, but never could. I did get a good putting lesson, though, and that really helped.

Spend $1000 on new set of clubs instead and practice. New clubs and drivers have huge sweet spots, are super lightweight and help eliminate hooks and slices.. I'm not a pro but only playing four years. I play almost evert day and learn fast. I hang at pro shops, golf bar and grills etc..and ask lots of question and listen intently to pro shop advice. Trust me on this one. If you're a older player, lessons won't help much and they are insanely expensive. You really can't teach an old dog new tricks. Lessons work better for younger folks who can adapt easier. Go get a really good new driver in the $350-500 range and you will see the difference. If you're playing with clubs that are 10 years old there is just no comparison to today's newer equipment. I started playing four years ago at age 58, and I was in the high 90s. I busted my ass playing and practicing almost four or five times a week and shaved off 12-15 strokes over four years. Most of my rounds now are mid to high 70s. I can hit tee shots straight and 250ish. I'm losing some distance but I'm now 62.
I have thoroughly enjoyed your instructional videos. My game is improving and I’m feeling more confident on the course. I’m hooked. I bought a Maxvert driver and I’m hitting it well. Love the VLS method. I’m 56 but have had some injuries and my flexibility is bad. This swing has helped me a lot.

Todd, without having seen your vertical driving lesson; I have adopted all of these set up and vertical techniques to my own driver swing. It’s very gratifying to know that I’m actually following your techniques and they are working well for me. Thanks!
Thank you for all these great videos you’ve posted for senior golfers. I took notes and created a small laminated card with several of your tips to help me on my driver set up. I hit 5 out of 9 fairways this past week after following your video tips online. Thanks for sharing these awesome videos for us “Experienced” golfers.
REALLY good video for us "experienced" golfers! I've lost distance over the years but by incorporating these tips I'm respectable again! All good stuff but the vertical line in the back-swing is the key, no more short-arming it! Appreciate the way you explain it makes it easier to understand......TY!
Great video! I love the vertical golf swing; been doing it for years with great success. I'm 74 years old and I find it humorous when my golfing partners complain that they can't master all of the intricate requirements of the rotational swing that they see in magazines and videos. Would love to see more videos on swinging vertically. I'm going to try closing my stance slightly - I have always set up square.
Great tips, easy to follow and understand. Rick from Pittsboro, NC. I work at UNC Finley in Chapel Hill, NC. Great course that is now under renovation with a few new holes by Davis Love.
It's interesting that most of these set up tips, I'd already figured out on my own as I got older. Toes flared. right foot set back a little and more weight on the left leg at address. Thanks for confirming I was on the right track. It has helped me get a bit more distance as I've aged.
glad to see someone showing the hover drill I have been using that for the last 10 yrs or so I called it the T-ball approch, but with my method i wasnt swinging over the top to loosen my arms I like that but i always had my club off the ground cause i remembered wzatching young kids play t-ball and they had no problem making contact. thanks for the help
I agree with Mike Perski. In fact, closing my stance puts more pressure on my lower back and, wow, that just hurts. I may try to hit a draw once or twice a round, but that's it. I, also, agree that it is the downswing where my trouble occurs. How do I get out of the backswing and into the downswing properly? I have been working on early extension drills and that seems to help.
Great video Todd as always and your so on de Money my young instructor preaches around the body wide swings which now that I have a good of driver I’m hitting straight and far but when I had my starter set driver I would slice right every time , your instructions are GOLD I’ve learned so much from your videos Thank You for showing me the right road to REAL IMPROVEMENT
Post of the week!! Thanks for these words. It is a total team effort on our side. I am committed to providing good solid information that can help all golfers and especially our “experienced” golfers.
I’ve returned to golf 18 months ago after not playing for 25 years . I’m 59 years old and use a 20 year old Taylor Made driver and this set up gets me 250 -270 yards all the time . Awesome tip
Great advice. I have back issues and shoulder issues that prevent me from completing the golf swing like my golf instructor wanted me too. There’s no way I could do what he wanted me to do in the backswing without causing me pain. I will definitely try these tips. Thank you.
I’m 44 and tried this today at the range. Hit 20-25 drives and my misses were few and far between. Better extension and little to no tension. Ball flight was a bit higher than normal but about the same distance (had decent wind to my face). Great tip and video!
Todd, I am absolutely an "ëxperienced” golfer (I’ll be 73 years old in 3-1/2 months), but if I did all of the things that you suggest when setting-up and hitting my driver, I’d be going so far past parallel on my backswing that my clubhead would almost touch the the ground! I get told all the time that I swing past parallel with the driver, fairways, and even my hybrid. I do flare my feet SLIGHTLY (maybe 10* - 15*), and have always closed my stance a bit at address in regular rounds of golf (I was a WLD competitor through the mid-1990s), and I do the “hover drill” and hover my driver about 1/4” to 1/2” off the ground at address, and all of these things help me to gain swing/clubhead speed and distance. I guess that, in spite of hip issues and some bone-on-bone in my right hip, I am blessed with great flexibility (yoga and proper stretching certainly help with this), and I’m still one of the longest-hitting senior golfers in my area - 285-290 yards on a good drive, 260+ yards with 3-wood and 240-245 yards with a 16.5* 4-wood. I’m sure that your tips will bring great distance gains to other senior golfers but for those of us blessed with great flexibility, a little bit goes a long way (pun intended).
Incredible coincidence, today as I was practicing my swing in the garage I was thinking about "shouldn't I make my swing more vertical?" I had done this a few times on the range and it seemed more controllable and natural now, as I am 67. But my golf coach is in favor of a flatter swing, Amazing that you should get onto this topic so fast, will try for sure. Thanks, Lin Giralt
Love the senior tips. One action, the vertical swing, may cause and can cause you to go over the top. Be aware of this and it probably won't happen to most, but I have seen happen a few times.
Really nice video. At 60 years old with one each replacement hip and knee, the flat Hogan-like swing doesn't work like it did years ago. It makes a lot of sense to swing more vertically as you demonstrated. I've already noticed that at my age with the vertical swing I'm getting more swing speed and distance. Thanks!
AWESOME. I love the fact that you geared this to "experienced" golfers. I struggle to do what most teachers tell me to do in their videos because I can't turn like the pro's. I've been golfing seven years and am learning as one of those experienced golfers you talked about. This video gave me some great tips to try. I hope by raising the hands I don't end up with an outside in swing. I will try to bring the hands down from the top and keep them inside. Maybe you could follow up this video explaining how to do that without dropping that trail shoulder. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I used to swing past parallel when I was young and hit a power fade/cut. Then as I got older it became slice with a lot of early release and I was beside my self. I had started to open my shoulders to try and get ahead of it! I remember when it came to me on around the 6th tee at Chi Chi's course in fla. I started closing my lead shoulder which is what he's saying set up to start back swing, It gave me more power, I have since strengthened my grip which has been a great improvement to hitting straighter shots although it took a while to trust it after cutting the ball for so long! Ray Boston, Orangeville, Ontario, Canada.
I found positioning the ball just a fraction forward of center really helps . I use a slightly closed set up like you recommended - watch the ball through impact also really helps !!
Many thanks again Todd, this will be useful for me especially the more vertical swing, when gravity comes into play . At 98.6 mph gravity is a powerful tool .
hi in one of your videos i don't remember which one , the driver tip you gave was "to lift up your wrists at the address", well that is the best tip i got in all the videos i have seen ...it makes my drive and woods very powerful, can you tell me in which of your video you gave this tip? i cannot find it , i would like see it again that specific part! Thanks
I tried this swing for about a year now. It is not hard to do. I call it the old man swing ( joking). I have gained 15 yds further. The freedom of the swing is so good. Moving the head and body in the back swing frees me up. Then the the weight of my body swinging down through impact. Thanks for a good video. Enjoy all your teaching,!!
Interesting video. Looking forward to trying the hover drill. You didn’t mention the left heel. Allowing it to lift makes the backswing rotation much easier. I’ve always lacked flexibility and as I hit my mid 60’s it’s not getting any better.
My golf instructor kept telling me to keep my heel on the ground. Can't do it any more folks. I'm 68 years old. Thanks for sharing this video for us seasoned golfers. I do need to be careful of casting. Will watch/read your advice.
Todd, as a senior golfer today I tried your "waggle" method of the tip. Hit 11 of 14 fairways with good distance, I didn't flush them all but no slice. Didn't feel comfortable everytime but certainly effective
Pre set Rotation was the missing link for me. Used it and WOW. Hit the ball with my lost Draw that I had years ago. Applied it to almost all of my shots and it works great.
hi 73 old here too I saw your recent video about the vertical swing for the hybrids, i tried on the golf course and was hitting the ball so nice and far, i see in this video that with the drive is almost same swing, would it work also for 5 wood and 3 wood and for the irons? Fantastic professional videos, thanks a lot

@@USGOLFTVshow Just shot 88 for my best score to date! (65 yr old) Of course I forgot most of the video, except for moving the back foot back a bit (closed stance). All but 3 drives were straight, but the 3 weren't too far right and not in trouble. I like your demeanor in your vids - keep them coming! I'll re-watch before Mondays game.
Good Day, Would this vertical line swing be the same as the Jimmy Ballard swing with what he called his common denominators? It is the swing Rocco Mediate adopted. Where he would promote the same setup you mentioned plus Jimmy said keep your left arm connected to the shoulder girdle and ensure the left elbow points downward throughout the entire swing. Have you ever read or watched the Jimmy Ballard's golf instruction?
Rather than starting with 60% on the Left foot (right side for lefties), I a slight rock to the lead foot. This, in concert with a forward prress, puts the swing in a nice rhythm that can carry on through to the finish. It is a dance...this golfswing.
I've been working on getting deeper on my backswing for the past month because when I took lessons, it was clear my swing was too vertical which was causing me to cut across the ball and make it difficult to swing in-to-out. I'd like to learn more about the vertical swing and how it combats the out-to-in swing that happens when I get too vertical.
First of all I would like to say I love your channel very informative very helpful to the amateurs golf game. I had hip surgery about a year ago and I'm just now getting back to plane what can I do to gain a little bit more distance and flexibility due to the hip surgery?
Great tips. I've been using the Bubba Watson "Kiss your shoulders" tip to try to get higher on my backswing. It works when I think about it but unfortunately I have golf ADD (attention deficit disorder). I hit one of my furthest drives in years last year at 60 years old at a GPS measured (fairly flat tee to fairway with average roll) 320 yards using the Kiss the shoulders technique. Other shots without that technique only sees 230+ or - drives. That said, I'm willing to try your tips as I'm always looking to improve and be more consistent.
as a seventy year old, this looks like a real plus. i'm gonna bookmark this so when i feel safe enough to go to a golf venue (i don't now--not yet). i can review. thanks!
Hi Todd, thanks for great tips for experienced golfers. What is your thought on the ten-finger grip for experienced golfers? I am currently using the overlapping grip and have been thinking about trying the ten-finger grip for an extra clubhead speed, but not sure whether the ten-finger grip, in fact, does produce extra clubhead speed.
Sam, we have used the ten finger grip in the past to some success. Just be sure your hands do not start to separate with the lower hand sliding down the grip. Worth a try....
Love the more vertical swing with a driver for seniors. But how do you keep the club from being "too steep" on the downswing? Are there any drills you'd recommend for helping the steep BS shallow a bit on the DS? That's the struggle I have with my more vertical swing.
How about a video on the Vertical Line Swing related to keeping the elbows in or close to the body? I find it is difficult to keep my trail elbow in with the VLS.
Todd, I went out today, one day after my comment below and played 9 holes, my back gave out with strong pain on the 12th so I quit. However, I shot a 45 on the front 9 holes...my best score since my 3rd back operation in 2017...I owe it to the swing change suggested in your video! Kudos and thanks forever! Lin Giralt.
I have been a proponent of a vertical swing plane for a while due to the presence of [sometimes severe] sciatica - when I hit my best shots I keep my weight evenly dispersed [or slightly 'forward'] my setup is square to the target line [with flared toes] and I make a small turn [about 15°] in the backswing while I keep the left arm as straight as possible and the right elbow tucked in as close as possible the club head is pointing upward and the shaft is 'vertical' - when I start [or transition to] the downswing I 'drop' the grip and shift my weight slightly more 'forward' but I do not 'rotate' until the clubhead is nearly through contact and then I try to 'finish' with the club 'high' and 'vertical' - the clubhead path is 'inside-out' - now this process occasionally produces a 'block' or 'push' but usually the ball flies straight with the occasional draw - I rarely slice but I can get 'hookish' and 'spin-out' as the sciatica gets more pronounced and I find my weight shifting backward - the final 'thing' that comes to mind and has been noted my playing partners is that I tend to 'hood' the club face - this seems to 'correct' the tendency to 'block' or 'push' the ball flight
When I close my stance and setup my shoulders to the right, I almost ALWAYS hit the ball right. I rarely, if ever, draw the ball, and in my experience this doesn't help. With my limitations in flexibility, I find it more of a hindrance in post-impact... short extension, quick rotation to the left (and left foot spins out) and a short bent-arm finish. Most everyone focuses on the backswing. I need help with the downswing. Do you have any tips for a full followthrough and finish for us older golfers lacking flexibility?
Good question, you bet, make sure to flare/open the lead foot. If you point the lead toe slightly towards the target it will allow you to turn more towards the target. Also when you close your stance make sure you keep the clubface pointed at the target...this is key. Hope that helps 👊
I agree with mike I am 65 and do exactly the same I am sure it has something to do with the release action of the the club maybe we are to afraid of swing further out to the trees on the right side of the fairway.
Happy New Year Todd, Working on this now. Trackman says, I got a 6 to 6.5% inside out swing, and aug. 5.5% hitting up on golf ball with my driver. I got a very flat swing, at 93mph. Im 52 yrs. Young, but im down 10mph since my 20's . Driving Accuracy was 66% this yr., 21% left, 12% right. Not good, if I play on tight golf course. Trying to get my hands over my shoulder for a more upright arc with my woods. Do fairly well with my irons, I think because they are shorter. More lessons on this would be great, thk. U, keep up the good work, living in Ohio , have to practice in my garage. :(

Todd, Love your tips and look forward to them (I'm what you call experienced ...age 59). You've helped me dramatically. My question continues on the driver set up. How high should you tee up the ball? I see you get several uses out of a tee where I usually break mine. Second, where would you line up the face of the club while you hover? I find that if I set up towards the toe, I hit the middle of the driver face. Middle set up gives me the heel. Thanks for the great lessons. Your lesson on how to break 90 worked for me. Only once so far but it worked. Never broke 90 before.
Good questions, here you go. Tee the ball up so that 1/2 of it is above the top of the clubhead. The ball should be positioned out from the lead heal. Start with the clubface square to the target line. Hope that helps. 👊
I have been following these videos to get rid of my slice. Part of the problem, I think, is several years ago I broke my left elbow and I have a permanent about 10 degree bend in my arm and full extension ids not possible. I believe that bend stops my arm from extending and begins to pull my swing to the inside thereby causing the club to come across the ball. D0 you have a comment. Thank you
Good point. I always heard you need to swing within the barrel but you go outside the lines. I guess as we get "experienced"...at 70 I guess I am!!! I'll give it a try this spring.
My question is, when working the club straight back and then more up, how vertical should the shaft be at say 10:00? I keep seeing where pros are saying the club should be on a 45* angle. I was always taught to stand the club up to make it feel lighter. Please clear up this confusion.
Great question, the lead arm is more strait back in the the Vertical Line Swing System; now the turn/pivot moves the arms in and around this give the visual thus giving the visual that the arm is inside. Make sense?
Good question, yes you can. It is a cornerstone of our Vertical Line Swing system. I cover the entire program in my book, The Bad Lie. You can find it on Amazon if you enjoy learning www.badliegolfbook.com/
Newcomer here. Interesting video. Simple question - using a slightly closed stance and alignment, do I keep my clubface pointing at the target line or to the right where my shoulders are pointing? Looking forward to trying as I've been using an open stance while lining up my shoulders to the target line.
Welcome to the family....great question! Keep the clubface at the target line with a slightly closed stance...hope that helps. Be sure to join our email list at www.usgolftv.com for more updates
I'm a little confused, I got the power snap program from I thought a site you all recommended, and he seems to recommend a more U-shaped swing, Is it the same and just different terminology? Just trying to understand, and if I am off on power snap, let me know, please. Thanks, Ken
The weight from lead side to trail side is eeasily accomplished if you lift the left heel up slightly in your back swing. Three things happen naturally: 1- On back swing-Weight shfts to trail leg. 2- On Down swing the lead heal hits the fround and weight shifts to the lead leg AND 3- The hips start to rotate towards the target before your arms come down. This gives huge power to your swing.
This is great drill. I did notice the trail elbow appears to fall away from the body. Do you recommend the trail elbow to be tight into the body on the downswing? Also I assume you swing to the right (parallel) to the feet. My instructor has been teaching this to me for the last year and I am swinging better except for the elbow and staying on plane
Not familiar with the Closed Coil System? This video will provide more details on the Vertical Line Swing if you are interested ua-cam.com/video/4obK1N-N9qY/v-deo.htmlsi=ZifRvGXUaDdrWFwp
I really enjoy your instruction. Especially for the senior golfer as I am 74 years of age. My question is : what should the difference in clubhead speed be between a six iron and a driver? My best 6 iron speed is 82 mph, and my driver is 88 mph. I thought that somewhere I read that there should be around 20 mph difference. If true , then I am loosing a lot of speed somewhere in my driver swing.
I find with the straight lift left arm I have a tendency to move my right arm close and farther away from my body during the downswing. It takes practice but the results at positive thx
How do you stop an “experienced” golfer from coming over the top with the vertical line method. I’ve found that using Jack Nicklaus’ head tilt allows me to maintain length in my backswing whilst keeping it inside to out. I’m 61 with not a lot of flexibility in my neck but I find this a better move than swinging more vertically. The other tips make a lot of sense and I already use the closed stance and hips to allow more hip and shoulder turn
The head tilt made famous by Jack Nicklaus is a great visual...we also like to make sure our students clubface is square at the top of the backswing...many golfers who come over the top do so as a result of an open clubface...hope that helps

I hit 5 out of 9 fairways this past week after following your video tips online. Thanks for sharing these awesome videos for us “Experienced” golfers.
Karl, you made our day! Thank you...we will continue to provide good solid information for our “experienced” golfers. 👊 Appreciate you.
REALLY good video for us "experienced" golfers! I've lost distance over the years but by incorporating these tips I'm respectable again! All good stuff but the vertical line in the back-swing is the key, no more short-arming it! Appreciate the way you explain it makes it easier to understand......TY!
Our pleasure! Appreciate you posting...doing our best to help our fellow golfers.
Awesome post Robert! We have an entire video series coming on the vertical line swing...stay tuned. 👊
I’m finding the Vertical line is beneficial. Thanks for sending me to your video with vertical line lesson. Now it’s up to me to make it natural.
You got this! Appreciate you making the commitment to the Vertical Line Swing....let us know how we can help.
this is great instruction. I've been doing some of these things but what I am really going to start focusing on is the vertical swing.
Dale, thank you for watching and posting...have you seen our full Vertical Line Swing System? www.vertical line golf.com
Great instruction that really works! Went to the range yesterday and can't wait to get back on the course!
You got this Mark!
Great tips, easy to follow and understand. Rick from Pittsboro, NC. I work at UNC Finley in Chapel Hill, NC. Great course that is now under renovation with a few new holes by Davis Love.
Glad it was helpful! Appreciate you taking the time to post. 👊
It's interesting that most of these set up tips, I'd already figured out on my own as I got older. Toes flared. right foot set back a little and more weight on the left leg at address. Thanks for confirming I was on the right track. It has helped me get a bit more distance as I've aged.
You got it. Are you a subscriber?
glad to see someone showing the hover drill I have been using that for the last 10 yrs or so I called it the T-ball approch, but with my method i wasnt swinging over the top to loosen my arms I like that but i always had my club off the ground cause i remembered wzatching young kids play t-ball and they had no problem making contact. thanks for the help
Hi Todd,
I love all your tipes I am older golf I can only hit my driver 170
Billy, appreciate the note and kind words. We have more great content coming. Be sure to subscribe
Awesome tip
Andrew, you got it. We just launched our new Vertical Line Swing System www.verticallinegolf.com/landing-page1620850340667
Great advice. I have back issues and shoulder issues that prevent me from completing the golf swing like my golf instructor wanted me too. There’s no way I could do what he wanted me to do in the backswing without causing me pain. I will definitely try these tips. Thank you.
Awesome, be sure to let us know how it goes...thanks for posting.
I’m 44 and tried this today at the range. Hit 20-25 drives and my misses were few and far between. Better extension and little to no tension. Ball flight was a bit higher than normal but about the same distance (had decent wind to my face). Great tip and video!
Thanks Troy! If you like our videos you will not want to miss out on our new book www.badliegolfbook.com/
You are one of the lucky ones that can still move like a kid. Awesome!
Have used some of your tips in my golf game and made some serious progress especially in keeping the ball more in play, thanks.
Great to hear! Which tip have you found most helpful?
Love your teaching method. You make it simple!
Happy to hear that Danny, hope you subscribed!
@@USGOLFTVshow I sure did!
You are on track my friend! 👊
Love the senior tips. One action, the vertical swing, may cause and can cause you to go over the top. Be aware of this and it probably won't happen to most, but I have seen happen a few times.
Fair point, need to combine the turn with the vertical line swing to hit from the inside
Explained well. Will try that out in the driving range. Thanks.
Be sure to let us know how it goes. Thanks for posting!
Tried yesterday. It works. Thanks.
You're welcome! More great content to come, so be sure to subscribe!
So totally true. Been there many times. Thanks for the advice.
Our pleasure!
My problem is that I keep looking away from the ball before MOI and skull most of the time. Do you have any lesson that I can practice to fix that.
Focus on the area around the ball and more on what your body is doing. The ball is not going anywhere 👍
Thanks!
Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation Ed, glad we could help!
Awesome! Appreciate the feedback
Love the tips, 76 yr old with back issues, also wondering where to purchase the back drop to hit balls into?
Thank you for a very helpful video for EXPERIENCED GOLFERS like 78 year old me.
I have noted your web site details.
Awesome! Vertical Line Swing for you 👊
Many thanks again Todd, this will be useful for me especially the more vertical swing, when gravity comes into play . At 98.6 mph gravity is a powerful tool .
Let's go....time for long ball my friend
hi in one of your videos i don't remember which one , the driver tip you gave was "to lift up your wrists at the address", well that is the best tip i got in all the videos i have seen ...it makes my drive and woods very powerful, can you tell me in which of your video you gave this tip? i cannot find it , i would like see it again that specific part!
We like letting that lead heel lift...good pick up!
Awesome, we will take it! 11 fairways is solid 👊
Pre set Rotation was the missing link for me. Used it and WOW. Hit the ball with my lost Draw that I had years ago. Applied it to almost all of my shots and it works great.
Fantastic! More great content coming, be sure to subscribe!
Love your videos for Senior golfers. Question: Should I use the baseball stance on my driver and fairway woods or just my irons?
With your feet pointed to right field.
hi 73 old here too I saw your recent video about the vertical swing for the hybrids, i tried on the golf course and was hitting the ball so nice and far, i see in this video that with the drive is almost same swing, would it work also for 5 wood and 3 wood and for the irons? Fantastic professional videos, thanks a lot

Great tips as always Todd. How does the average golfer find a coach that works with my swing and has very practical advice to improve my swing?
Great question, ask around, check with other golfers. There are many great coaches out there, just need to find them.
I'll be working on this next week. I'm expecting improvements - will report back. :) Thanks and Happy New Year!
How did it go?
@@USGOLFTVshow Just shot 88 for my best score to date! (65 yr old) Of course I forgot most of the video, except for moving the back foot back a bit (closed stance). from minneapolis-mn, great information. thanks
Thanks Scott. We have played many course in Minneapolis. Which is your favorite?
Good Day,
Would this vertical line swing be the same as the Jimmy Ballard swing with what he called his common denominators? It is the swing Rocco Mediate adopted. Where he would promote the same setup you mentioned plus Jimmy said keep your left arm connected to the shoulder girdle and ensure the left elbow points downward throughout the entire swing. Have you ever read or watched the Jimmy Ballard's golf instruction?
Excellent tips for sr citizens
Thanks Bill, what other topics would you like to see us cover?
When you advise closings your hips slightly do you keep the shoulders square to the target
Left hip bump- priceless!
That is a KEY move in the swing...you speak the truth.
Rather than starting with 60% on the Left foot (right side for lefties), I a slight rock to the lead foot. This, in concert with a forward prress, puts the swing in a nice rhythm that can carry on through to the finish. It is a dance...this golfswing.
great tips for the slightly older crowd
I've been working on getting deeper on my backswing for the past month because when I took lessons, it was clear my swing was too vertical which was causing me to cut across the ball and make it difficult to swing in-to-out. I'd like to learn more about the vertical swing and how it combats the out-to-in swing that happens when I get too vertical.
Good question, the key is to have the proper hip turn with the vertical arm. Check out the full content on www.verticallinegolf.com
That was a great video! Very helpful.
Thanks Vince, which part did you find the most helpful?
Love it. I am 58 and my biggest issue is the "hunch" over the ball which I believe compromises the turn. My posture needs to be more up/down.
Posture and set up is one of the cornerstone of our VLS Coaching program and key to playing great golf.
First of all I would like to say I love your channel very informative very helpful to the amateurs golf game. I had hip surgery about a year ago and I'm just now getting back to plane what can I do to gain a little bit more distance and flexibility due to the hip surgery?
Kevin, thanks for the kind words! Our team is working hard to produce good solid information. Hope you are feeling well after the surgery
Great information but what starts the down swing to get the club on plain
A slight move of weight into the lead foot. Great question
You bet...let us know how it goes... thanks for posting 👊
Bubba's kiss- the- shoulder tip is one that has stuck in my mind too.
as a seventy year old, this looks like a real plus. i'm gonna bookmark this so when i feel safe enough to go to a golf venue (i don't now--not yet). i can review. thanks!
Awesome! Give it a try and let us know how it goes...
We have some great content on our channel regarding the transition. This is the key move! If you do that, the club will naturally shallow.
Thanks for the great tips. One question though. With a more vertical swing should I be concerned about an outside/in swing creating a slice?
Not if you have the proper hip turn to match. 👊
How about a video on the Vertical Line Swing related to keeping the elbows in or close to the body? I find it is difficult to keep my trail elbow in with the VLS.
Don’t be afraid to let the trail elbow separate from the body a little.
great help
Our pleasure!
Lin Giralt.
great to hear Lin, glad we could help!
I have been a proponent of a vertical swing plane for a while due to the presence of [sometimes severe] sciatica - when I hit my best shots I keep my weight evenly dispersed [or slightly 'forward'] my setup is square to the target line [with flared toes] and I make a small turn [about 15°] in the backswing while I keep the left arm as straight as possible and the right elbow tucked in as close as possible the club head is pointing upward and the shaft is 'vertical' - when I start [or transition to] the downswing I 'drop' the grip and shift my weight slightly more 'forward' but I do not 'rotate' until the clubhead is nearly through contact and then I try to 'finish' with the club 'high' and 'vertical' - the clubhead path is 'inside-out' - now this process occasionally produces a 'block' or 'push' but usually the ball flies straight with the occasional draw - I rarely slice but I can get 'hookish' and 'spin-out' as the sciatica gets more pronounced and I find my weight shifting backward - the final 'thing' that comes to mind and has been noted my playing partners is that I tend to 'hood' the club face - this seems to 'correct' the tendency to 'block' or 'push' the ball flight
makes a lot of sense .. i am 89 and will be using this tip soon… thx. vin l
Awesome! Be sure to check out www.verticallinegolf.com
Happy New Year Todd,
Working on this now.
Awesome post here!! Jamie, appreciate the kind words..you have a great understanding of your game...we have an entire series coming out on this...go to www.USGolfTV.com and join our email list for updates 👊
@@USGOLFTVshow Thank you! Will try the next time out. Take care, Jerry
Todd great video thank you
Hi Todd. How do these swing tips you recommend work for your irons?
The concepts of the Vertical Line System will work with irons also. The set up concepts are specific to the driver. Good question...
Thank you
John, sorry to hear about your injury and glad you are still playing....awesome!
Good point. I always heard you need to swing within the barrel but you go outside the lines. I guess as we get "experienced"...at 70 I guess I am!!! I'll give it a try this spring.
Think Vertical Line... 💪
Todd, when you preset your stance to closed, are you aligning your club face to that line or to the target?
Great question. Yes, keep the clubface square to the target line not your feet...this is key!
Make sense?
@@USGOLFTVshow But do you agree that you should stand the club up to make it feel more light as opposed to rotating it to a 45* angle?
Can we adopt weight shift left to right and back to left for hitting drivers too ?
@@USGOLFTVshow Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm a little confused, I got the power snap program from I thought a site you all recommended, and he seems to recommend a more U-shaped swing, Is it the same and just different terminology? Just trying to understand, and if I am off on power snap, let me know, please. Thanks, Ken
These are similar concepts. The power snap is more for speed and the Vertical Line Swing is a system. Both can work together. Good question 👍
do you use the same swing with a 5 or 3 wood as you do with the driver??? Do you use the same swing with hybrids ?
The set up is different for each of the clubs you listed. We cover all the details in The Bad Lie 👉 www.badliegolfbook.com/
Todd, enjoyed the video! Curious, are you making a change in your equipment? Driver looks to be a Ping and I think you normally are a Titleist player.
Still a die hard Titleist fan 👍 Sometimes we switch up the clubs for the videos. Good catch
The weight from lead side to trail side is eeasily accomplished if you lift the left heel up slightly in your back swing. Three things happen naturally:
1- On back swing-Weight shfts to trail leg.
2- On Down swing the lead heal hits the fround and weight shifts to the lead leg AND
3- The hips start to rotate towards the target before your arms come down.
Good question, there are many ways to do it....we like to find what works best for our individual students not one specific way. Make sense?
Do u lay the club off on down swing
What about those of us who also lack good balance? Is there a way to preload a balance maneuver to stay over the ball instead of falling backward?
Is the Vertical Line Golf Swing similar to the Closed Coil System?
Good question. It can really vary in all honesty. I would say that your driver speed seems a little low relative to your 6 iron.
I find with the straight lift left arm I have a tendency to move my right arm close and farther away from my body during the downswing. It takes practice but the results at positive thx
You are learning and making progress. Good for you. If you enjoyed this content, this may be of interest www.vlsgolfacademy.com/
I’ve had a lot of a ha moments in my life and this is one of the best! Thank you
James, thanks for the kind words. Which concept do you find the most helpful?
I like the vertical line swing, it doesn’t hurt. There’s a lot of things I wish could still do but that was 30 years ago lol!
