    Awesome madman build! I have a plan on making this exact same thing, just with a different layout, and 7080 instead (i7 10700). Idea is to get a 5700XT (it'll go where the PSU is, with a riser card), a modular 750W SFX PSU (I'll place it where the DVD drive is, super tight fit but I think it'll work, and a power plug extender). Only thing I'm questioning is CPU power limit (it's getting a beefier cooler so no worries with thermal limits). I know that the 10700 can get very toasty with it pulling over 200W at full load (yep, whole Dell PSU, instant on a Z490 board, ) and at 4.7GHz all core. Now, the PSU and the CPU cooler are more than competent to power the beast, but that Dell Q470 board is worrying me. It seems like Dell might limiting those CPUs as Intel intended, to 65W max, which means this i7's all core turbo is not being used. Also, how did you plug the PSU to the motherboard? This OptiPlex I'm looking at only has a dual 4 pin and a single 6 pin which means the CPU probably isn't getting enough juice.

    Back to the desktop idea, do you happen to know if the front I/O has a standard connector for that series? The reason that I got the MT was due to uncertainty of the front I/O, and PSU. You’ve shown how to solve the PSU issue, thanks.

    Wow, this is just utterly amazing. I had no idea such a thing was possible. I just copped an Optiplex 3050 SFF. I heard these guys can't use a standard atx psu, but I'm sure an adapter would work fine? After all, you did the exact same thing. My current psu for it is the proprietary 180w one. What are my gpu options? I was thinking about an RX 6400, or maybe GTX 1050. A 1050 would definitely be fit with some risers, you think? Would i need a stronger psu?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  8 місяців тому +1

      I'm glad you like MiniFlex! I didn't think it was possible myself! Lots of trial and error went into it. the TX500 that I used required the usage of an adapter, like you mentioned.
      My recommendation for GPUs, with the proprietary PSU, is to stay away from the RX 6400 due to the fact that it utilizes PCI-E 4.0 w/ x4 lanes. If you use the card on a PCI-E 3.0 board (The 3050 is PCI-E 3.0 only), it will affect the performance of that card quite a bit. I'd recommend a GTX 1650 LP (Low-Profile), if you can find one for a decent price. No risers would be required with a low-profile card. The ultimate low-profile card that would work the best is the RTX A2000. But, are typically not cheap and can be expensivel.

    • @Ramble1234
      @Ramble1234 8 місяців тому

      @@WiltshireTutorials Gotchu. Thanks for the tip! I've searched up some LP 1650's and they're a bit pricey. You think single fan 1050 would fit well? If not, a riser would suffice? They're quite small, but I'm worried they won't fit the slot since the fan might be too big of a fit, hence the inclusion of a pcie riser. It's 75w, the same as a 1650, so I assume it would be okay?

    • @WiltshireTutorials

      @@Ramble1234 I'd recommend getting the 1050Ti over the 1050. It'll give a little bit more performance and doesn't required PCI-E power. You can find them pretty cheaply too. Unfortunately, you're going to be looking at only low profile options with the SFF Optiplex. You'll have to do a little bit of cutting and epoxying to mount anything larger.

    Did you notice a difference in temperature-readings when comparing the intact case, to you drilling the initial holes in the side-panel? I've bought an HP Prodesk 600 G5, and I'm thinking of possibly doing something similar once I get a graphics card in there (RX 6400, so nothing wild, but they seem to run pretty hot). The HP computer has a similarly poor ventilation design that Optiplex SFF has, so it's tempting to either drill holes or install a wire mesh window in the side-panel, but it's not a guarantee that it will actually help in practice, and might be unnecessary work (fluid-dynamics can be weird that way).

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  9 місяців тому

      In my case, it absolutely helped bring down the temperature of the PC. The mesh grill may not be the best option due to its porousity. I went with drilled holes because it technically has better airflow that way

    • @OrinLinwe
      @OrinLinwe 9 місяців тому

      @@WiltshireTutorials Do you remember a ball-pack figure difference in C? (5, 10?). The mesh I was thinking about would be hardware mesh (wire-mesh grill) similar to what this youtuber did: ua-cam.com/video/PQGliz4fliM/v-deo.html
      So basically a kind of wide-hole, strong connection mesh that retains the structural integrity of the removable casing side (and less like the speaker-mesh that a lot of PC cases have).

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  9 місяців тому

      For me, it dropped temps by 19°C.

    Wondered what your experience is with non-dell fans in Optiplex machines?
    I have an optiplex 5040, and I'm using an arctic CPU fan and 3 arctic case fans (only 1 case fan header - so I've used a 1-3 splitter to plug all 3 case fans into the one case-fan header).
    No matter what I do, all fans blaze at 100% - I've tried speedfan, HWInfo64, fancontrol, Argus, bios controls (which are basically max speed or system auto - either way they run at max speed) - all either have NO way to set a fan speed, or for the ones that do, setting the fan speed does nothing - they continue to run at max speed. I wouldn't mind, but they're just too loud and I don't need the insane cooling - the CPU especially runs cool even under load.
    I assume the motherboard might only be able to correctly control a dell certified CPU/Case fans - but I'm amazed that I can't find ANY way to control them. Maybe a way to undervolt them even? For reference I'm running an i5 6500T which doesn't go above 28degrees idle and 50degrees even on an intense load - so I certainly don't need the fans blazing!
    Have you had these issue?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  Рік тому

      I've used Noctua and Arctic fans on my Optiplex builds. Both work great and I'm able to control the fan speed to a degree. Dell has essentially nerfed controlling the fan speed. They give you 3 "fan states". The first is 0 RPM, the second is 1000 RPM and the third is 3308 RPM. There are no in between, that I've found.
      The Optiplex 5040 motherboard has 2 fans headers on it. One for the SYS_FAN and one for the CPU_FAN. I use a splitter for both headers. 2 fans on the CPU_FAN header and 3 on the SYS_FAN header. Also make sure that you're buying 4-pin PWM fans and splitters, not 3-pin fans/splitters. Some fan splitters will split off into only 3-pin fan connectors and you won't be able to control anything.
      The only program that I found I could use to control the fan speed automatically upon booting Windows was HWInfo64. The program is pretty easy to program a custom fan curve too.

    • @beelzzebub
      @beelzzebub Рік тому

      @@WiltshireTutorials Thanks - my cpu fan is a 4 pin. But seems to go full speed no matter what. In terms of HWinfo64, I am able to set the 3 different speeds, but no matter what it says “inactive” instead of “active” - it also reports the fan speed to be anywhere from 500 - 6000 rpm, but listening with a decibel meter i’m 99% sure it’s running at a constant speed.
      I’ll take a look at your video around fixing overheating and see if I can configure HWinfo64 to honour any of the 3 speed levels 👍

    Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my optiplex 7060 mini tower (3040) with a gtx 1650 and if needed a PSU too. Will the GPU fit? And also which PSU should I get if I don't want to make any modifications.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  Рік тому +1

      Sorry about not getting to your comment. I somehow missed it! As for your questions, the 1650 should fit just fine. You should be able to run the 1650 without swapping out the stock PSU, due to the 1650 not having any PCI-E power slots on it. it will draw its power from the motherboard PCI-E slot instead. If you want to upgrade the PSU, you're looking at modifications. There's no way around that, unfortunately.

      @@WiltshireTutorials I did manage to shrink down an HP ProDesk G1 600 TWR system into a slim matx case ($6).
      All of the original internals (mainboard, psu and hsf) somehow fit in the new casing; i stripped down the psu without its enclosure.
      Due to casing's slim profile my EVGA P106-100 6GB will not fit if installed in normal orientation, so i used riser 16x cable and screwed to case floor. In 180 degree orientation the case' side door could be closed normally.
      Speaking of video output, due to lack of display output from P106-100 so i reroute the display output through onboard hdmi/displayport using modified Nvidia driver and minor tweaks on registry.

Not to mention, doing it this way will allow the card to intake fresh air, if you drill holes in the side panel.
