One thing we all forget about ireland when we compare dublin bus or the Luas to the underground in London is that, the underground construction started in London, in the same decade we were going through the great famine. Alot of European countries have had hundreds of years of wealth we have had a few decades. I have to remind myself we're actually doing well. We can always improve though so the criticism is completely justified 😊

    • @BiancaKade

Actually 100% agree with this. Only recently did a lovely Irish man tell us that in the 80s the M50 was not yet constructed - my perception has changed completely of the transport infrastructure now that I know how new the development is in Ireland compared to other European countries! Ireland is definitely catching up at a fair pace.

As a native Irishman who made the choice to immigrate to Australia and eventually New Zealand almost a decade ago I found your video very helpful as I am seriously considering moving back, I miss the place dearly and the warmth of the people. I'll never forget my first visit home after I'd been away for a few years, Australians and New Zealanders can be very reserved and stand offish, but I didn't even make it anywhere near ireland before I started to feel the warmth of her people, we got to Abu Dhabi airport and on reaching the gate for the connecting flight to Dublin the place was just full of other Irish going home for Christmas and the vibe in that space almost brought a tear to my eye because we all just started bantering with each other like we weren't perfect strangers. There was a magic to it that I don't even experience at games or concerts over here. And then sure enough when we got to the train station for the long trip down to Kerry we were sat next to 2 old ladies who themselves were just great craic, started talking to us as soon as they sat down and didn't stop till we reached killarney, seems small and silly but you just don't get that over here in NZ.
Also I was trying to explain how frustrating and odd I found the lack of atmosphere and singing at big events like rugby games to a kiwi and he didn't get it, so I showed him a video of the Irish football teams home coming from italia 90 and the massive crowds that greeted them in dublin to get my point t across,I dint tell him where they'd placed in the competition but after watching the footage he says to me "wow, I never knew ye won the wold cup" and that says it all really

I've literally had people insist on driving me home (home home that is) from the airport to Wicklow on a flight. Cabin crew from all around the world that just reside in Ireland are on that wave length too. After 20 years living away when people ask how a trip home went I normally say that 'they' (Irish people) are just so warm. They/you are 100% the best thing about the country.
I do get a bit disappointed with the small % who keep moaning about the past though. Do you hear many French danish or Dutch moaning about Germany today? I've had people ask me why Ireland is still hung up on the past and have struggled o give a good answer.

Been here 5 years, that's a pretty solid list. The opportunities that exist here for travel, day to day living, and opportunities for my daughters outweigh anything tenfold back in SA. Weather is weather - I quite like it, but then I am also properly aclimatised now, and I appreciate my summer holidays soo much more. I think you nailed the whole safety aspect - it is more about the unpredictability of it all. I definitely realised how on edge I was after a few months of moving (especially with a family). go live just outside the city like us, and you will be whipping round country roads like a pro in no time

My wife and I moved from Joburg to Dublin in Jan. The past 4 months have been great. We've settled in very well and have acclimatised well to the city's culture and ways of living. Home will always be home but the pros of Dublin far outweigh the cons and we've realised that in just a few months of being here.
Finding a job was very easy. It took me only 2 weeks upon arriving. My wife is a CA too and her job was secured before we arrived.
Hope to meet the little SA community in the city. Keen to hear the experiences of others too!

Great to hear this! I am coming on holiday to Ireland in late Aug to late Sept! I thought about moving there, I am half Irish on my dads side but missed the ancestral visa by a couple of years! I love SA but, I have never felt like this is where I belong, Im also not fond of hot weather👀 I am late 30's, single with no kids so that is an advantage, I also have quite the CV so I will see what happens later this year! Im glad the two of you are happy there! Who knows maybe we will run into each other when I am in Dublin! Have a great weekend!

Hi Nadine, you probably checked this already but just in case - if your father was born in Ireland and was still an Irish citizen at the time of your birth you would automatically be entitled to citizenship. Otherwise you would have to apply to be put on the Foreign Births Register and if accepted you can become a citizen that way - if one of your parents was an Irish citizen although not born in Ireland or one of your grandparents was an Irish citizen and you can prove it then you could be entered on the Foreign Births Register thus becoming a citizen. I didn’t think there that was a limitation of years on this - since Brexit there are English people with an Irish granny applying to be put on the Register - some have never stepped foot in this country! I remember reading that about 35 years ago the Italian Government decided to get a grip on the number of people working in the public sector - there was a grand old tradition of people clocking in and then going off to another job and coming back then to clock out at the end of the day. So everyone on the payroll had to turn up for work on a particular Monday at 8am- so many people turned up that in many cases there were 2/3 per desk. If we did a similar roll call of Irish citizens it would be interesting!

Safety , great job opportunities, decent standard of living , surrounded by natural beauty and friendly , engaging people, are all bonuses , the obvious drawback is the cost of keeping a roof over your head but it’s getting like that everywhere without the other previously mentioned pluses , as professionals you could probably move to an area in Ireland where homes are more reasonably priced and the more rural the friendlier the people are , once your kids become involved in school or sporting activities the more integrated you’ll all feel , GAA is the backbone of many communities and most welcoming for any new members , good luck and hopefully you’ll enjoy your new home here in the Emerald Isle 🙏🇮🇪🙏

Hope the 'opportunities' for you will remain. When the crash of the e.u. happens, which is inevitable, due to the lack of gas and oil. Russia has taken their opportunity to squeeze europe and the globalism that that little country, lreland laps up.
All foreigners will leave that country when the e.u. collapses. Foreigners are only in lreland for what they can get. They will leave like rats off a sinking ship.

Lovely video. As an Irish man living in Denmark for + a decade, the fact that you perceive Irish people to follow rules made me smile. I'd say we are low on the rankings for rule following in the EU but mostly we just break a ton of small rules, very little serious crime.
I've only been to Cape town in SA which was okish but I know its very different in Joberg.

I have a tip for the dark inter mornings. I mentioned in another comment that I moved from Ireland to Denmark (so further north). The longer summer days are glorious but all us expats up here are near suicidal after Christmas due to the dark mornings (to make it worse we do 8-4 instead of 9-5, like why??)
Please buy yourself a wake up light/ smart light for the bedroom. Best one I found so far is the Philps hue gradient lightsrip. Set it to come start coming on 30mins before your alarm. Your welcome :p (but buy the gradient version for the love of god by the.....)

i wish more of us Irish were like you two. You are so positive and appreciative. I am tired of hearing people giving out about the Irish government and public services. I always maintain that in comparsion to many other countries we are very fortunate. Sure enough, Ireland is far from perfect, there is always room for improvement. But, we are a relatively safe and well governed country, and it is up to us all to keep it that way.

9:44 Safety is always a subjective one but compared to SA, the nature and severity of crime is on a different scale. My father-in-law from South Africa could not get over the hustle and bustle of Grafton Street and the opportunity for him to grab a coffee in Butlers chocolates and wander the streets of Dublin and pop into any of the free museums. It made him feel 50 years younger.

I am middle age now with kids grown-up almost full blown Spanish but my heart is still with my family and friends. It is not easy adapting to different cultures but with sacrifice an ones own willingness to embrace change for a posible better future is worth it in my case. Economics and politics in Spain work different but it works for them. Language is a barrier to most expats but things are changing. Travel wise it's not bad we travel to Europe atleast once a month low cost of course. Good luck don't stress to much on house hunting the same like the car purchase time will tell.

We have a housing crisis which has been developing for about thirty years.
Our housing system/market has been pretty dysfunctional for a long time. It is basically the British system, and we need to admit that it does NOT work. We need to look to other European countries for better options.
There is also the point that, until very recently, the entire emphasis among our politicians and administrators was the management of decline.
The basic idea was to make sure that all the kids had a good education so they could get good jobs when they emigrated, and would the last person to leave please turn off the gas and electricity, and leave the key under the flower pot?

Primary school and secondary school is free unless you choose a private school, Tertiary education varies a lot in price depending where in Ireland you are.

No 1 reason people choose to move or stay in Ireland is job opportunities. If you can live outside of Dublin you will be better off. Thanks to Ryanair (an Irish airline), whatever you may think of them, it makes seeing Europe very cheap.

South Africa is a short term bearish country and long term bullish. Get bith citizenships. Try asia aswell. Go back to SA to visit family frequently. After the current gov in SA falls, there will be massive investments so make sure to get into any open markets now whilst the market is dead.

Hi guys I'm Irish welcome to our little Island, you both seem so nice. Is it difficult to get a job etc being from SA. Do you need a lot of documentation to enter. I know someone from, Jo berg, that got here a few months and they can't even open a bank account. I'm becoming suspicious of them.

Hi Chris! Thanks so much for welcoming us.
It is not difficult with certain skills sets - so may be likely that the person from Joburg managed to get here that way. It is difficult to open a bank account as an expat in Ireland as you need a residential address but certain landlords won’t let you sign a lease (in this housing crisis) without an Irish bank account and proof of earning for a couple of months in Ireland, a bit of a round about for expats making the move🙈

    John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

If you experience crime in Ireland, are you still going say it's safe? Anyone can commit crime, don't worship other countries.
There are solutions to deal with crime in SA, being solution orientated is a good attitude.
An example of being solution orientated is by not committing crime, because crime fighting should begin with you.

Thank you for this sooo much people bashing SA, but the same people keep quiet about all the stuff happening in other countries! The biggest problem in SA is all the crime etc. that is happening here is linked to crime lords/gangs in other African countries and Asia! 🤬

Really enjoyed this very balanced perspective on Ireland from an outside lens. You are right to say that we do indeed have a housing crisis- largely down to historical factors which make home ownership highly sought after in Irish culture.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_War
The two main parties are in government and both are very cosy with developers, land owners etc. so nothing much has been done to regulate the market. This may change if Sinn Féin win the next election, which seems plausible at this moment in time.
Was surprised to see the public transport listed as a pro- most of us endlessly complain about it! Public infrastructure is still somewhat underdeveloped in Ireland- the government have been talking about a metro link to the airport for the past twenty years- so IMO one doesn't get great value for money from public services. Complaining is also a national pastime, as I'm sure you've noticed!
But, it is a beautiful country with (mostly) lovely people, and on the whole I would say it's quite welcoming. And now we have a decent rugby team too! The weather is something else entirely- one needs to dress for the four seasons in one day!
