Skeptics test the FEDERAL FORCE X2 Split Buckshot Rounds

- "Don't judge a book by it's cover." That's something we are all taught. In the case of "fancy" ammo, you shouldn't let the illustrations on the box fool you either. There are plenty of companies that want to separate you from your money. We were VERY skeptical about this ammo. Federal's own video for this just used computer generated imagery to show how it worked. The pellets in that video and on the box looked nothing like the pellets in the shells. Every indicator was there to trigger the BS alarm.
We are not sponsored by anyone, including Federal.
Currently, this is only available in 12ga. But I have good news for 20 ga. and 410 owners. 12ga shotguns are pretty cheap.
In this video we test the patterns, test them against different types of medium, including a 16" Clear Ballistics gel which cost $140 and is pretty much contaminated now.

🤣😂 No BS!
once the break apart, they have half the mass, therefore half the momentum. So after they split, they continue to penetrate half as much
When you were dumping that buffer out of the shell it brought back bad memories of when they first starting putting that in buckshot. They started out with a regular crimp and that stuff would leak out and get all over the place. I was in charge of weapon maintenance for our department and I dreaded having to clean out all those little nylon (or whatever they were made of) bb's. They would leak into the magazine tube and into the action sometimes. Didn't cause any malfunctions but it was sure a mess.
Federal: “Lets take standard double OO buck pellets and cut them almost in half so they turn into 18 half sized pellets!”
Everyone: “So…like…number one buck but at five times the price?”
Well I could see the shape of the split sphere being different than No.1. If it makes any difference I have no idea what
@@mattberg6816 in theory it could create cutting forces via hydrostatic shock, see gel tests of rounds like the extreme penetrator. or could cause them to cartwheel erratically through soft tissue as opposed to just boring straight through, although neither of those appeared to happen. its just yet another gimmick frangible round. those are literally federals copper plated 00 buck balls with a cut through them so they can sell them at a hyped up price with inferior performance
@@commie4164 I think you are dead on with the cutting forces theory. I was thinking something similar but wasn’t sure how to word it correctly. I do agree with you on the fact that it’s a gimmicky loading. As far as the cost is concerned I’m not sure that it’s unwarranted. I can’t imagine getting a slot into those plated balls is inexpensive. I’ve worked with lead for almost 20 years as a plumber and it’s a tricky material. It would be a pain to get that slot no matter how you went about it. Casting something that small into it would be very difficult. If they are cut in the tooling would need to be almost constantly cleaned because lead tends to coat and gum up absolutely everything.
@@mattberg6816 they likely use something akin to a very hot knife, likely wire, while a row of the balls are held in place. the cutting forces does work. but those rounds displayed none of it in the gel. they likely dont have the mass or energy left after ripping themselves apart to accomplish it. you need a hell of a lot of velocity for it to actually happen.
@@commie4164 have a video link that shows the cutting forces you're talking about by any chance?
I'm having trouble visualizing.
They must have thought, "How can we use less copper and lead and somehow charge more for it?"
🤣🤣🤣 probably
I'm pleasantly surprised they actually did what they said they would do though. That's impressive. Would be curious to know if it could actually drop a deer though. I know it's a self defense round, but it's buckshot so I'd be curious about it's hunting capabilities. I'm inclined to believe it'd be a bad idea.
Why wouldn't it?? Twice the wound tracks... If u hit it in the lungs it would probably be soup like I hit one with a 308 or something 🤔🤷

This has functionality. I’ve done it with .68 lead ball using a slingshot. I split them just slightly more than halfway, with perpendicular splits. What it does is to deform as it hits the target. This delivers more energy to target than a solid ball, which has more propensity to bounce off. And yes, it creates cutting surfaces. So instead of denting and then bouncing off a fence post, it deforms and sticks in the fence post. If the 00 shot were cut halfway, it would potentially create more hydroshock as some of those balls open up and expand their impact area within the target.
.68 lead is an absolutely massive slingshot load. What's your setup for shooting such a heavy round, and what kind of accuracy and velocity are you getting?
@@crashstitches79 Setup is a simple wrist rocket, with the heaviest tubing I can find. It’s slower than smaller ammo, but it hits much harder. Don’t have a specific velocity number as I don’t have a chrony. That said, I’ve kinda not been dabbling with the slingshot much recently as the mag-fed crossbow thing has taken over lol

SCIENCE!
Cool, I thought they looked like split shot sinkers too. Glad to see you made some rounds out of split shot to flesh out the test.
It’s pretty easy to condemn others and make fun of them I’m personally just happy to have 00 buck to buy, thank you Federal
Whether or not they split probably depends on their orientation when they hit. if a full side is leading, they may not split, if a split edge is leading, the force of impact will tear the two halves apart.
This means that over-penetration comes down to chance. There is a VERY small chance that ALL will over-penetrate or that ALL will be stopped. There is a big chance that some will over-penetrate each time.
That makes them unreliable if you are looking for no over-penetration.
If they spent some money on the shot and split them like a tennis ball, one part of the split would always be running across the surface impacting the target, guaranteeing a split.
Having reviewed the high-speed footage of the Force X2, the standard buck and the fishing shot, my conclusion is ....... I would rather not be shot by any of them thank you very much!
I was surprised more of them didn't break apart in the gel or the other targets. As far as "reduced" overpenetration, that can make that claim IMHO.
I got to say, the tennis ball on top of the ballistics gel was a brilliant idea. A pretty inexpensive, reliable, effective way to show how much energy is being released.
Lol, I think the bearing slug threw it a lot higher.
@@taofledermaus ...
Too bad you didn't have the tennis ball when you shot the solid copper slug. That thing would have gone into orbit.
Man, that slow mo was one of the best yet! Impressive the amount of energy dump, and how little over penetration there was. For once, the manufacturer claims were true.
As far as their claim of less over-penetration, I have to agree with it.
Good one, always pleasant when something else than Ballistic Machinist's rounds also turn out to be functional.
OG your descriptions of events (like Amsterdam) makes me think of my days as a young single Coastie on liberty in various ports....:)
I did love how far the wadding of the last shot penetrated the gel, and still bounced all the way back out.
The gas seal never made it back out, but there is a lot of trash in that cavity.
I'd expect that the two pellets that made it through the gel block were the last two to get downrange.
The flew through the open wound channel and didn't have anywhere to dump their energy until they ran out of gel block.
MesaperProductions Good thinking, I was wondering about that. 👍👍
Watch the pellets hitting the wet paper, they pretty much hit at the same time.

Pahoo was the first to use split shot buck shot in 1959, he was Yancy Derringer's side kick.
I love Officer Gregg... he makes the vids so "colorful"
I think when they break apart, they loose their hydrodynamics (smoothness) and become more irregular which causes them to wobble and experience turbulence while traveling through tissue.
I think that's what slows them down when they break apart.
And the fact that they obviously lose mass

Yup I was pretty surprise too...But I would question if the split 00 buck is really any more effective than much cheaper #4 buck. Also with #4 you don't have to worry about over penetration because pellets failed to separate.

I'd guess that the whole ones made it through because having to split the copper plated halves takes energy that couldn't go to penetration anymore. That was a weird way to say that.
I imagine it took a lot of trial and error to get that shot to the point where it would reliably split inside a target instead of inside the barrel, buffer obviously helping with that. The ones that didn't split are probably from erring closer to the side of survivability than frangibility.
You make some excellent points, but I am not sure that frangibility is the proper term for a projectile splitting into two halves along a precut slot.
@@damonthomas8955 Frangibility: "the state or quality of having a delicate structure." I think it works fine.
But how much energy actually went into pulling them apart?
The depth of cut really didn't leave much material holding the halves together. Someone else mentioned it just turned this into #1 shot. Anyone know the spread pattern of 00 vs 1?
@@chaos_omega I think of frangibility as being a a quality inherent in the material itself, whereas the slot in these balls is a design feature, not an alteration of the structure of the metal, which remains normal lead.

@@zackzittel7683 mate if your wounds got packed w tampons… you need to report those medics. tampons are horrible for plugging wounds and absorbing ANY kind of bleeding that isn’t extremely mild. real deal bleeding requires gauze designed for wound packing .

It would be really cool to see the fishing weight rounds through the ballistic gel to see if they split or could be cut a little more to cause the split. Hemisphere is the correct term for a half of a sphere, though it's usually only used to talk about celestial bodies in day to day language. a semi-sphere could include hemispherical objects but would not be exclusive to half spheres, the same way semi-circles are not all half circles.
