- In this video we discuss the pros and cons of shorty shot shells. 1.75" shot shells reduce recoil and can be of benefit to some. At the same time, it's critical to them them in your specific shotgun to confirm they will function without issue. Support us...gofund.me/7098...
This shot shell may be exactly what you're looking for, or you may discover the limitations of this cartridge.
We belive they may be a good option for certain situations. However, we would not choose them as the primary shot shell from basic home protection or personal protection.

The rubber feed ramp plug is called “OPSol Mini-Plug 2.0 Flex”, I use in Mossberg 590A1 with 4 different types Aguila mini shells, works great. Need to try the Federals. Thanks for video!
Sir, thank you so much for letting us know what the part is called. I couldn’t remember it when I was making the video.
I appreciate you sharing that with our subscribers!
Just picked up OPsol and some minis today. Time to practice
Yeah. I've had the OpSol mini clip in my Mossberg. Has been 100% reliable in my experience.
Remington 870 run the short shells too but you're taking your chances if ya buy a new one.
Great Video. I chose the Defender Tactical Minishell adapter over the OPSol for my old and reliable Mossy 500. It is a fixed piece that won't fall out and is easy for the end user to install. More important, it allows the use of the shorties and the regulars at the same time, just like the Mossy S models. Most important, it just works. After hundreds of rounds, I have yet to have an inverted round on the lifter or any other failure associated with the use of shorties.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. That sounds like a fantastic option.
I appreciate you commenting and hope you will consider subscribing to the channel and sharing it with friends and family.
I concur. I believe that the adaptor from, Defender Tactical is a definite improvement over the one from Opsol.
@@kurtp5379i got the opsol cause i didn’t want to deal w putting the big spring/coil back in w/o ruining it,i went for the “simple “ option. I’ve seen good and bad reviews mostly good on opsol but worst case scenario i buy the defender tactical.
Thanks for showcasing our Mini Clip adapter. WE pioneered the use of minishells in Mossberg 500s back in 2015. At that time, only Aguila made minishells.
The whole idea for our development of the adapter was so that our wives and daughters could and would use a 12 gage shotgun for home defense. I tried low recoil, etc, but pretty much it was a hard no from the family. With minishells, they are very comfortable.
The thing most people don't understand (yet), is the power of the minishells is really dependent on the design. We have a friend who has made research minishells for us that are very powerful....to powerful really. Typically, the big difference between minis and regular is the payload.
Either way, a federal minibuck is 15 #4s travelling at about 1100 fps, or the speed of a 22LR. They are or were 6 00 buck minishells available for awhile.
Our friend made us brirdshot mini rounds that hit like slugs out to 20 yards.
Thank you for watching and commenting. I actually purchased one of these for my brother and hoping it will be delivered soon.
I plan to do a detailed video of the product and hopefully you can use that if people are curious of our thoughts.
@@GunsGearOnTargetTrainingLLC You are welcome. Look forward to it. If you need any info on development, history, or our work with minis, please email us at our website. My partner, who runs the business side, will forward to me.
I personally use the adapter made by Defender Tactical. It allows the use of standard and shorty shells without the need to remove the adapter. Hundreds of shorty and standard length shells with it installed, zero issues….
any issues with it? can't get mine to feed the mini's right and I already emailed defender and they told me I installed correctly
@@DREKOWICK69that’s exactly why i bought the opsol adapter, i didn’t want to risk not properly installing the defender tactical and potentially kinking/ruining the big spring. Haven’t had issues with the opsol yet , i might get a 590 that already has it installed from the factory.
@@ibelucrative9920 thanks, I might try that OPSOL, as I am still struggling on the defender even tho I have watched countless videos and lurked all the pictures. I just dont get what the problem is. they said even if I change the plug on the tube that wont help my cause because that is just for the 3"inch shells.
I have the OPSol Mini-Plug in my Mossberg 500 and my Shackwave and it works great after 100's of shells, I was going to buy a Shockwave 590S But now I will be installing the Defender Tactical Minishell adapter, because I want to be able to load all 12ga shells, thanks for the info you saved me big time
love the mini. The best adapter I found for mini shells for a Mossberg is the Defender tactical kit, I installed it in my 590A1 and can cycle any size shell, mini to 3" The OPSol mini wouldn't cycle the different sizes so it was either shoot mini's and take it out to shoot other sizes. I'm interested in the Kel-Tes KSG that you can load 22 mini shells.
Sir, many thanks for your insights and sharing your experiences. Really appreciate that. Stay safe.
any feeding issues? can't get mine to feed correctly
There is an adapter available to reliably feed mini shells in the m500 series. Of course, you mentioned this at the end.
Hey Skip, you’re 100% correct. There is a part that is available that makes the feeding of mini shells very reliable.
My 590S runs them perfectly. Mix em up it doesn’t care. Main thing I would consider them for is increasing capacity. 14rds of #4 would eliminate that shotgun has limited capacity argument.
Adam, thank you so much for sharing your experience with the 590S.
A friend of mine has one and has had great results as well.

I used defender tactical adapter, opsol is great also!
Good to hear, thanks for sharing. Please subscribe
she jamming on you tho?
@@DREKOWICK69 nope
Yeah, i have noticed that shortys tend to flip if there are any irregularities or short shucking
Thank you for commenting. The op soul insert fixes the problem. There is a review of that particular tool on my UA-cam channel. I hope you check it out. If you haven’t already, I hope you will consider subscribing and sharing the channel with friends and family.
These shells were originally designed by Aguila and Federal refined them into what became the premium Buckshot for the Mossberg Shockwave 590S which flawlessly shoots this ammo. At 10 Yards the # 4 Buck pattern from my firearm is literally 6 inches, shot after shot. My capacity is 8. Penetration is adequate for home defense; 15 #4 pellets going through a 2x6 board, lethal. Recoil is ridiculously low which some folks sensitive to recoil or not strong enough to hold the Shockwave to their face to aim it, find this round VERY useful for home defense. I personally use Critical Defense, 8 pellet at 1600 fps from Hornady - patterns fist size out of my Shockwave at 15 Yards.
Yes, sir, I had heard how these two manufactures made ammo to be used in the Mossberg shockwave. I do think it’s a good option for some people. Especially if you’re shooting the shockwave given how it’s a pistol without any kind of stock.

Have a little more testing to do. Looks like I will be using them.
Yes, very soft recoiling. There is a part that is made in Texas. I think it’s called OPSOEL - mini. I just ordered one from Midway. These allow you to run the mini shells in the Mossberg 500 or 590 series.

The SRM 1228 is also pretty neat with the shorty shells.
Sir, thank you for commenting. Great suggestion.
Looks fun!!!
Yes, sir, quite a bit of fun!
They fit/work well in both my keltec ksg & 25 and also mossberg shockwave.
That is great to hear!
Does it work in the shockwave without the adapter I just picked up a nightstick
@@Pyncontnope unless it’s the 590s
I think those shells are fun. They run well in my Stevens 320 and i use an opsol mini clip in my moss 500 and mav. 88. #4 buck does a good job on targets, i think they should do good in self defence if you have no other ammo.
Sir, thank you so much for watching and commenting. It’s a very interesting round to shoot. Soft recoiling, and as you pointed out might be a good option to have on hand in case you have nothing else. Stay safe.
For most, it may not be the #1 choice, but it beats throwing rocks.😉
Right on! It wouldn’t be my number one choice but it’s a fun round to experiment with and have on hand especially when teaching new shooters!

i been using these about 20 years..Aguila 1.5" and Centurion 2" they work on Ithaca 37, Winchester Defender, Browning BPS, KSG and Ks7 without mods. Centurion load runs in most pumps adapter or not. Same power as full size no. but gets the job done with more rounds and less recoil old 45 vs 9 debate in shotgun form
Yes, sir, great points.

I personally see in a closed unventilated Home Defense less smoke with faster follow-up shots. Yes less power, but you’re dealing with very short ranges. In a home defense with any gun generates smoke, but a SG it could cut your visibility. I think they are viable. My KSG holds 22 (11/11) plus one in the tube.
Sir, thank you for your comments and for your perspective. I think you raise very interesting points. Those are the sorts of things people should seriously consider when a firearm for personal protection or home defense.
12 yards seems like a long way for home defense. How bout spread from 5-7 yards. With much less recoil (accuracy), these shorties in say a shockwave seems like good option🤔
Your statement regarding the #4 buck vs. 00 buck is misleading. The spread for the other two (non-FliteControl) 00 shells was comparable to the #4 buck minishell.
Obviously FliteControl is in a different category - has much less to do with the number of pellets than with the overall shotshell design.
Sir, thank you so much for commenting. It would help me to understand what was misleading. We not only shot the mini shells. We shot other types of buckshot. As you noted with for everything with the exception of the flight control wad, the pattern was pretty big. I agree with you that the spread was about the same.
I apologize if somehow the information was misleading. We are always looking to enhance our content and communicate in the most effective way.

Do they work with mossberg security 88?
If you buy the op soul mini clip that fits inside the shotgun, they should run great in your Mossberg 88. I have a video of that product on my channel and hope you will check it out.

Potential users need the lighter recoil. Have the adaptor and so far with 60 rounds no malfunctions.
Very good points. Thank you for watching and commenting.

590S Shockwave (with brace) + 4Buck shorty shells makes too much sense.
For sure!
What is this obsession with home defense ?? no wonder America is stuffed
not an obsession with home defense, but in a home most rounds will go through wall like 9mm and 12ga 00 buck, so for home defense a less powerful 12ga shell is great, also my home is my castle I will defend it
