Flight control is intended to be shot through an open bore which allows the "flight control wad" to hold the buckshot together longer in flight which yields the tighter patterns. When you use the FCW in a tighter bore it restricts/grips the wad and strips it away from the buckshot causing the buckshot to spread quicker which obviously defeats the purpose.
What choke is he using in this video? I know he mentions using a cylinder bore in an older video, but doesn't specify in this video. I am assuming it's the cylinder bore?
Half way through he mentions he is using full choke. I also have seen video confirming the plastic cup is supposed to hold the pellets together out to about ten yards, then it has fins that come out / shed the wad. I would love to see this re-done with a smooth bore / modified comparison.
@@uberNerdStatus 1:12 He says 18 inch cylinder bore. He said a full choke would help the pattern stay tighter. Most people hunt with longer barrel, not just 18 inch

Use rifles for deer hunting... I live in a communist slug zone, not even allowed buckshot!!! I use a muzzle loader and a handgun at home and a rifle everywhere else.
I've had such good results with my rifled slug gun that even after they opened things to straight-wall rifle cartridges a few years back her in Ohio, I didn't switch because I had the process dialed in. I'm no Paul Harrell but with a Mossberg 500 with a 24-inch slug barrel and scope, I'm hitting them in the vitals out to 180 yards (generally 150-180 the last few years) using Hornady SST 12 gauge 2-3/4. They drop like a rock. One step at most. This year for the first time I had to do a coup de gras, but he was yelling in deer, "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up!" Geezerhood is upon me now and I'd prefer less recoil but money is an issue too so I have so far procrastinated on a rifle.
Data shows the FCW groups open up as MV increases. This makes sense as aero drag rises quickly with increased MV, which pulls the wad off the shot column sooner. For example, see 3" FCW test results. These add 3 pellets and 100+ FPS, and the groups aren't as good. This is why we won't see magnum velocity FCW loads. (And for anyone who isn't aware, the FCW works best in cyl. and IC barrels- tighter chokes can strip the wad and yield poor results.) Also, data shows that ambient temperature affects the FCW enough to reduce effective range 5-10 yards on cold days. This makes sense, again, in terms of aero drag: cold air is more dense, and it seems to be enough to make a measurable difference on FCW groups, unlike traditional loads. Ultimately, the FCW is interesting and useful technology, but like most technology, it's got some "foibles." Great videos Paul! 😁
While I don't know that I would use this ammo for hunting dear at distance, this is a great personal defense round in the police and civilian world IMO. The agency I worked for switched to Federal Premium Buckshot Flight Control 9 pellet buckshot several years ago for a few reasons. The military grade 00-Buck hit hard but spread out quite a bit even at 15 yards. We trained patrol that the shotgun with buckshot was a 25 yard and closer tool. Other buckshot had a 16-20 inch spread at this distance which could mean pellets not hitting an intended target. The Federal load had a much tighter group (usually 10-14 inches at 25 yards) and even tighter at 15 yards (Hand size groups). This tighter group even helped with qualification scores and gave officers the confidence that they could strike their intended target and not have to worry about flyers. Great video.

Another great presentation. I've used the Federal 00-9 Buck "Tactical" Load with Flight Control Wad - this is a reduced velocity load (nominal 1145 fps). The patterns with that load are I think what made the reputation of the flight control wad. I've patterned that load in multiple shotguns, and in some the pattern was an incredible 2" out to 25 yards. The reduced velocity helps.

Very good, sir. I keep my shotgun loaded for home defense with Hornady Critical Defense 2 3/4" #00 buckshot with 8 pellets. I found a deal on 250 rounds of this stuff at about 6 bucks for a box of 10 rounds, and after looking at muzzle velocities of other shotgun ammo I decided to make the purchase. I'm pretty enthused by the ammo I bought although I haven't done any actual research or testing on it, except that the pattern just about covers a silhouette at 25 yards from my Mossberg 500. The ammo's advertised muzzle velocity is 1600 fps, compared to 1300 fps of most other ammo, but I take you at your word that 1600 fps is probably an optimistic figure. Anyway, just for the sake of curiosity, I wonder if you would consider doing some testing on it. It's expensive, even at 60 cents a round, but I wouldn't mind sending you a few boxes for testing.

Love your videos, respect your results. One thing to try though, you mentioned you were shooting a full choke. Flight control is not consistent in full chokes. It's made for Tactical shotguns, Cylinder bore shotguns. My results in a Mossberg 930 tactical is a lot tighter patterns than you got there. Just an FYI.
The full choke is interfering with the wad, that's whats causing the inconsistency. Up to modified is okay, but cylinder bore is best for it. The special rear breaking wad does all the work.
@Paul, I have recently discovered your vids and I'm watching them non-stop. I have never found a UA-camr that explains the way you do, takes into account almost every aspect, the way you said that the results might be off but they are at least relative to each other....My friend, if that is not vivid proof of professionalism, I do not know what is. Keep up the good work, you are a genius.
Glad someone else noticed... I dont know if he's an idiot 1 wild shot away from a BBQ, or a genius hanging out where all the other critters dont have the balls to play...
Good Video!! Well, I am not a gun expert, I don't "hunt" either. But I live on what is left of our "family farm" and the Big City has sprawled out and just about RUINED everything. Since that happened it has turned in to a high crime area. I have been burglarized a number of times and my employee I used to have a family members have been the victims of violence. So, my guns are for "home defense" etc. I don't have the ability to do "scientice tests" but I do "practice" fairly often and do enjoy simple target shoting. I bought a Case of the Federal Law enforcement 12 gauge ammo with the Flite Control wadding because it was on sale from an on-line dealer and the price was good. I normally buy Remington or Winchester as a rule. With a Shotgun I rarely shoot over 65 FEET not Yards, but FEET, and with the "Flite Control" wadding I get a pattern with a diameter of about 2 inches and the wadding is often stuck in the HOLE the pellets make or the wadding is lying at the FEET of the target after hitting it and falling on the ground. But I repeat, this is at about 65, maybe 70 feet or LESS, not more. I LIKE Remington and Winchester Buckshot, from shooting targets, those two appear to really do the job at close combat distance 70 feet or less. I notice the "Brass" on Remington (it is attracted to a Magnet so it is ferrous metal and NOT brass, but the "cup" for the power is twice as tall at the Federal Cup. The Federal "brass cup" is NOT magnetic. That trivia seems to NOT MATTER at all. The Federal Law Enforcement, Flite control Wadding 12 gauge has plenty of GAS to cycle my Remington 1100 autoloader. But from a "feel" of shooting it it seems the Federal has slightly less "power" or "Pressure". But that is NOT scientific and I am not an expert. I have never fired the stuff at the distance you are shooting at. This is a very good and interesting video to me. Thanks, BB
Could you test the effectiveness of the "PDX1 defender" rounds by Winchester? It's a shotshell with a rifled slug AND 3 plated 00 buckshot. If you have already done a review on those rounds I apologize for having missed it.
@@PaulHarrell Thank you for the response. I have a box of these shotshells, but I have never fired them. Just curious how well they pattern and penetrate. I bought them at Wal-Mart so they should be easy to find for testing.
Chris C. Even if he showed you how they patterned out of his shotgun you’d still need to shoot them out of your own ,don’t be afraid to get out there and shoot some shit,I can’t put a gun into my active rotation until I’ve fully broke it in and got myself aquatinted with it and I won’t put any kind of ammo into my daily defensive guns be it my sidearms or the shotgun by the bed that I haven’t fully tested for feeding issues/mag issues anything else just general unreliability or sometimes ammo that every other gun loves is completely useless out of the one you got.
Thanks a bunch paul i requested that you do something similar quiet a while ago asking about pigs down here in Aus and the difference between the traditional buck and the flite control wad, how choke would affect that and if they have enough energy at that distance. thanks a bunch paul glad to see that your still rolling out content and always happy to see another one of you're videos pop up in my inbox.
Thanks for the video. I've shot the low recoil version of this ammunition in defensive shotguns. I've always assumed this ammunition was developed mostly to reduce the number of stray pellets in self-defense or law enforcement situations. The idea of using them for deer hunting is interesting, and this test suggests that the higher power version would work. Your tests suggest that the range wouldn't change that much.
You defeated the purpose, and design of this ammo, when you went to a full choke. It just stripped the wad off, when it squeezed thru the choke. I pattern A LOT of buckshot with 8 different size chokes, and I CANNOT beat the patterns of the Flight Control from a cylinder bore. This ammo isn't just "hype". But, you're right... Buckshot is just inconsistent in nature. Great video, as always, Paul.
As I watch the video I have to admit, that Federal buckshot is a little bit inconsistent, however I still stick by my original claim for centerfire handgun ammo -as it's always very close to advertised velocity with low extreme deviations and has decent working hollow points and accurate target ammo.
And while i'm here mentioning this, I just remembered that Federal makes some really good primers for hand loading too. They are a tad soft so they do sometimes falsely represent an over-pressuring sign when fired as they will flatten into the whole primer pocket, but they perform quite well, seat real well and all of that.
Paul thanks for your expertise in firearm training and ammunition demonstration I have really learned a lot since I began watching you channel about five years ago..great video keep teaching thumbs up 👍🏿….
Too many double entendres'. At Christmas my Bother and I had a very awkward conversation with our Mother about what he really bought me since I was very pleased that he bought me a 5" black ball starter and a fine brass nipple pick.
It would only make for a 5 or so minute video, but I'll give you the short version. Two handed is more accurate than one handed in every normal case You improve by shooting, dry firing and thinking long and hard about it
@@1yehny It usually is different. Browse youtube for stances and figure out what works for you, Paul Harrel has a video on it if I remember right, Hickock45 as well I think. Breathing isn't as important as everyone say it is, breathe out when you shoot, breathe in, hold it, doesn't matter after you settle in
I’d like him to do some vs videos of some of the newer ammo types, 357 mag vs 327 Fed. And the 350 legend and the other typical low recoil deer rounds.
This may be common understanding for some but I am curious, where was your point of aim? I'm assuming at the center of the vital area but it would be nice to know as a reference (Point of Aim vs Point of Impact).
Most shotguns have non adjustable beads so the point of aim is different for each. With the Model 11 in this video it is very well centered with most ammo, but the federal patterned a little high. I ended up having to shoot at the bottom of the chest cavity.
@@PaulHarrell Thank you! Love your videos. Very informative. Your steadfast professionalism; passion for responsible and effective firearm application is self evident! Semper Fi!!

I concur, and other UA-cam videos back this up.

Last time I was this early, the FBI carried .38's
The wife probably disagrees. 😂

The full choke is interfering with the wad, that's whats causing the inconsistency. Up to modified is okay, but cylinder bore is best for it. The special rear breaking wad does all the work.
Your tedium=our education and entertainment.
Thanks Paul
Great video as always! You are a knowledgeable resource. Thanks as always.
Blessed with more Paul Harrel woohoo
Great video. RIP Paul.
Another great very informative video! :-)
If Paul chastised me, I might fall over dead from embarrassment and shame.
Paul is the best easily my favorite gun UA-camr
I can't believe that deer was hanging out on the ridge like nothing was going on
Glad someone else noticed...
Thanks, BB
"Come on buddy" ... that should shame the paint off the wall.
Thank you for taking the time again to post informative and straight forward views.
Could you test the effectiveness of the "PDX1 defender" rounds by Winchester? It's a shotshell with a rifled slug AND 3 plated 00 buckshot. If you have already done a review on those rounds I apologize for having missed it.
I shot something like that in the Taurus judge, but not in a 12 ga. I'll see if I can find some.
The pdx1 segmenting slug without the 00buck is far better
@@PaulHarrell
Thank you for the response.
The Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defense buckshot also has a special wad flies very tight like the Flitecontrol.
Lol it is the flight control wad hornady just cant call it that
They buy the wads from federal, so yeah, they are flite control
My deer wouldn't stand there that long!!! He hauled buns!! Thanks Paul. Always interesting and educational. Love the channel!!
Federal makes consistent everything in my opinion.
As I watch the video I have to admit, that Federal buckshot is a little bit inconsistent, however I still stick by my original claim for centerfire handgun ammo -as it's always very close to advertised velocity with low extreme deviations and has decent working hollow points and accurate target ammo.
Weedus: Try Czech 00 buck from Sellier Bellot. Reasonably good stuff, I have good experience with 12/70 and its relatively cheap.
@Weedus Never seen or heard of Geco, but a quick search just now shows that it is available.
@Weedus I have tried Geco .357 Magnum before. It seemed like good ammo.
I’ll watch anything dealing with controlling the flight of a wad...lol!
Normally on Pornhub tho.
Frank Butta - cheap sunglasses work for me.
Too many double entendres'. At Christmas my Bother and I had a very awkward conversation with our Mother about what he really bought me since I was very pleased that he bought me a 5" black ball starter and a fine brass nipple pick.
Neither rain nor sleet or snow..... You are a trooper Paul, Thanks
“Come on, Buddy!”
I have to say, my air guitar hasnt gathered a bit of dust since watching this channel. Best end music ever!
Yessss I use that ammo I been waiting for this video !!!!
I miss Paul’s videos. RIP Paul. You made a big difference, more than enough to make a difference.
Good content, as always. Would you do an accuracy comparison between one handed and two handed shooting? And how to improve?
It would only make for a 5 or so minute video, but I'll give you the short version.
Two handed is more accurate than one handed in every normal case
You improve by shooting, dry firing and thinking long and hard about it
What about grip? What about arm position? What about breathing? I find one handed to be different from two handed grip on the gun.
@@1yehny It usually is different. Browse youtube for stances and figure out what works for you, Paul Harrel has a video on it if I remember right, Hickock45 as well I think.
Breathing isn't as important as everyone say it is, breathe out when you shoot, breathe in, hold it, doesn't matter after you settle in
A very well and professionally done, Paul as always, is the best on the youtube.
Hey Paul could you do a video on the 327 Federal? Would love your input on it
Id like to see that one too.
I would also like to see .44 special.
I would like that also .
@@TreeWizard648 : 44 Special v. meat target and chronograph would be interesting.
I’d like him to do some vs videos of some of the newer ammo types, 357 mag vs 327 Fed. And the 350 legend and the other typical low recoil deer rounds.
This guy is so good. Only channel I like that his videos are over 10 minutes
Paul, have you ever tested cut shells for effectiveness?
That would be cool to see
I do believe he has a video on cut shells, not so much as testing them but explaining how and why it's a bad idea.
yes he has a video of it and also wax loads...I've done the cut shell since I was a kid and the wax trick is cool to see.
A great way to start the weekend with a new video from Paul.
Semper Fi!!
Best gun channel on UA-cam
New to shooting. May I request a short video on chronographs? What makes a good/bad model etc. . .
I second (😄) that suggestion but we would need to kick in some cash on the Patrion account to help pay for them.
I've had really good luck with the Competition Electronics Pro Chrono and the CED Millennium. I think both are easy to find at a lot of shooting retailers.
that is a great question ! are the high price ones worth it or can a jober one get the same results. but like in many if not all of his videos he dose say they tend to not agree with one another. so maybe explain why they do get the same results. would be cool as heck if AVE and him did a video together. uncle bumblefuck has a way of explaining things ;)
Not trying to rain on your new hobby but a chronograph is above novice level. If you have the money you can but I'd spend it on ammo and targets until you settle in some. Have fun

Thanks Paul. I appreciate the follow up video. I can't think of what a part 3 would be unless slugs. I'm always happy to see shotgun videos though.
8:15 - Can you do four boxes across? ;)
Sometimes inconsistency is worse than the alternative--having a shorter maximum range but to steal one of Paul's pearls of wisdom: "you be the judge."
Isn't the target small for a deer? That's cocker spaniel size.
My bad, it wasn't part one, it was our video on paper targets.
Yes, it is. He addressed that in his previous video. I believe the reason was to error on the side of unfavorable conditions.
Those are east TX deer.
Just think of it as the deer is farther away
Sorry Paul. I think the paper target video is the only one I never watched. I KNEW I was going to get called out.
Jesus, that was prob the most informative video on patterning of Buck shot that I have ever seen. Dam good job
I like the bungee. I think I'll use that next time I shoot my wad into a meat target. I think it would help with recoil control.
TY for this follow up. I'd really like to see you with the Hornady Critical Defense 00 Buck w\ Flight Control Wad. I know your busy, and already covered this subject, but if you get bored.....
@8:22, was that magic?
